GOVERNOR’S REPORT 2016/17 Dear Parents Please find enclosed the Governor’s Report for the school year 2016/17. I hope you find it reassuring and informative. The Board of Governors urges you to study the report carefully. It is a record of endeavour and achievement during the past academic year. Parents, pupils, staff and the Principal deserve credit for their hard work and effort put in throughout the year. Should you require clarification of any aspect of the report please forward your request to the principal in writing. This Board of Governors is responsible for the overall management of Our Lady’s & St Mochua’s PS Derrynoose. I want to record my special thanks to all my colleagues on the Board of Governors who have worked very hard, in what is an entirely voluntary capacity, on a board which meets regularly, both in plenary and sub-committee sessions, in the service of your children. Gratitude is also extended to the clergy of the parish, especially Canon Crawley, Fr McCamley PP and Fr McKeever. ORGANISATION AND MANAGEMENT OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The Board of Governors of Our Lady’s & St Mochua’s Primary School supported by the Catholic Council for Maintained Schools (CCMS), the Southern Education and Library Board (SELB) and the Education and Training Inspectorate take responsibility for the smooth running of the school. During the school year the Board of Governors must meet at least three times per year. They receive up to date reports by the Principal and discuss and directed school business. The governors wish to take this opportunity to thank CCMS and the SELB for their much-valued support throughout the year. What are the main responsibilities of the Board of governors?

The Governors are ultimately responsible for the overall management of the school. Some of their duties and responsibilities are: 1 Overseeing of the curriculum 2 The control of the budget 3 The provision of information to parents 4 The appointment and dismissal of staff 5 The maintenance of the premises (shared with SELB) 6 Fostering links with the local community and pursuing objectives of

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING, THE CURRICULUM AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT Under the Education Reform Order the responsibility of Governors for School Development Planning, The Curriculum i.e. what is taught in the school, has been increased and Staff Development. The day-to-day organisation of the curriculum remains the Principal’s responsibility. The governors’ control of the curriculum is, however, determined by legislation. It is our responsibility to ensure that a broad and balanced learning experience is provided for all pupils. The school continues to monitor, evaluate and review its curriculum provision with any proposed changes being discussed with the Governors. As part of our school development plan for 2016-17 the school have been engaged in a range of initiatives to ensure continued emphasis on school improvement in line with DENI Every School A Good School (ESAGs) Document. Outstanding issues will be part of ongoing school development. A more detailed analyses of each area is reported directly to the Board of Governors at each Governor meeting.

Extra Curricular Experiences in Our Lady’s & St Mochua’s PS. Throughout the year the children participated in a wide range of extra curricular activities. All our pupils in P6/7 completed the Cycling Proficiency Course. P7 Pupils also took part in the Heart Start delivered by Mrs Quinn and their certificates were included in their records of achievement. Our boys and girls also engaged in a range of sporting activities including, Rugby, Tennis, Soccer, Gaelic Football, Camogie and Swimming. Children from P2-6 availed of the Modern Languages Programme – Spanish was taught by Mrs Corvan. Children also participated in Credit Union, Cumann na mBunscol and Local Pioneer quizzes. After school Provision continued with GAA Sports, soccer, cooking, multi sports, Burns Soccer and Light Camera Confidence. The school also values its links with the community and its participation in the life of the parish. The priests, teachers and parents continue to work together in the preparation of children for the sacraments. There was the usual excellent turnout of teachers, parents and pupils for Confirmation, First Holy Communion, Stations of the Cross and of course The End of Year Mass. Thank you to Mrs Eileen Hamilton, Vice Principal and Liturgical Director, for her work in overseeing all such events. Liturgies

Sporting Success This year witnessed our most successful year to date in terms of winning key Cumann na mBuscol Competitions: Paddy Morgan Boys and Girls Football Champions for the third year in a row Jimmy Carlisle All County Hurling Cup Mini Games Representatives: League, Caoimhe McNally, James Duffy, Eimear Boyd, Conor Fox Ulster Hurling Final 2017, Shay Mone and Sean Burke Armagh V Down First Round of the Senior Championship 2017 John Joe Hughes Ulster Final in Clones 2017. Cross Country Ciara Nugent came 5th in the NI Primary Schools League having came 1st in the three Southern Region Heats Swimming Andrew Larkin and Iona Beattie represented our school at the All Ireland Swimming Competitions Derrynoose, Kilcluney and Tynan Learning Community We continue to value our links with the local schools. Pupils from Primary 5, 6 and 7 all availed of special programmes from St Patrick’s High School. These included paired reading, ICT (Coding) and Maths. In addition we took part in the Learning Community Soccer Competition.

Newry Hospice

Many thanks to everyone who supported our Christmas Raffle in aid of Newry Hospice and School Funds. A total of £1300.00 was raised. Pictured is Mrs Brenda Fox who will complete the Dalai Lama Trek in India next year in an effort to raise £3500. We were delighted to be able to support Brenda. Pictured are all our winners!!

Walk to School Week

Thank you to all families who took part in and/or donated money for Walk to School Week. A total of £300 was presented to Lisa Norris on behalf of the NSPCC and £100 was presented to our music teacher, who learned the clarinet in two months, on behalf of the Kevin Bell Trust.
