EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS

2018 was a record year for rain, however BRC Education Staff didn’t let that stop them from providing quality environmental education to thousands of students across Pennsylvania and Delaware! Our Education Staff continue to grow and expand our offerings and programs to help meet the needs of the schools, educators and state and national standards, and most important- the students.

“We enjoyed everything! All of the instructors are so knowledgeable. It is always a pleasure to come to the BRC.” - 4th Grade Teacher

Teamwork makes the dream work. Teachers value our team building programs as a way to introduce valuable lifelong learning skills.

Offsite watershed programming gets students actively engaged in making water quality changes right on their school property.

Students of all ages had the opportunity to dip a net in the Myrick Conservation Center pond. With all the rain this past year, they had the added bonus of seeing the impact the extra water had on life in the pond ecosystem.

Target champ! “Indoor Out School” students have the opportunity to try their hand at tomahawk throwing. Who says that hand-eye coordination doesn’t connect to classroom concepts?

2018 ANNUAL REPORT 1

2018 proved to be a year of transition and growth, with

long term staff members retiring and new staff being hired,

as Brian Winslow transitioned to the role of Watershed

Conservation Director. After a comprehensive search led by

our Finance Committee; the Board of Directors approved the

committee recommendation to partner with an exceptional

and proven investment advisory company with vast experience,

including ESG investment strategies.

“To promote the restoration, conservation and enjoyment of the natural resources of the Brandywine and Red Clay watersheds through education, scientific activities, environmental stewardship and advocacy.” - BRC Mission

We continue to experience significant growth in our watershed

conservation efforts, in both the Brandywine and Red Clay

watersheds, with projects in Pennsylvania and Delaware. BRC

continues to lead municipal efforts to provide leadership and

guidance to nearly 50 municipalities across the the watersheds in

both states.

Our education programs have shown unprecedented growth

across the board, including school and member programs and

summer camp, with summer camp reaching nearly 100% capacity.

With our school programs we continue to navigate ever changing

state guidelines in both Pennsylvania and Delaware, in order to

offer schools and students a comprehensive hands-on learning

experience that compliments lessons in the classroom. Thanks to

the EITC programs and private scholarship funds, BRC was able to

offer free programs to any student that qualified for the National

Lunch Program.

BRC is fortunate to have generous donors, volunteers, staff and a

Board of Directors who continue to support us in our mission. In

this Annual Report we share a small sampling of our efforts from

2018.

West Chester Friends School

Teacher Michelle’s appreciation

for the natural world is

woven seamlessly though the

curriculum. She incorporates

developmentally-appropriate

environmental and science-

focused concepts into daily

activities. Students are

encouraged to observe,

question, imagine and wonder,

which shows them that they are

a part of nature. This in turn

lays a strong foundation for

communicating core values for

being lifelong environmental

stewards.

WATERSHED CONSERVATION

Restoration projects stabilize stream banks

With several stream restoration projects completed in 2017, this year was a year of finalizing the design and permitting phases, along with fund raising for significant new stream restoration projects on Plum Run upstream of Strode’s Mill and the Red Clay Creek at Nixon Park. In 2018, several smaller and on-going projects were completed:

• The final stormwater detention basin retrofit was nearly completed in 2018 at Pickering Court, Uwchlan Township in the Ludwig’s Run sub-watershed of the Brandywine.

• A wet meadow was installed at Nixon Park, Kennett Township, to help infiltrate and filter stormwater run-off from the athletic fields parking lot that flows into Red Clay Creek.

• A riparian tree buffer with trees and shrubs and a wild flower meadow was planted on a tributary of Burrows Run in Greenville, Delaware in partnership with Delaware Nature Society and New Castle County Conservation District, Suez Water and Patagonia.

• Over 80 trees and shrubs were planted with Mercer’s Mill HOA on the Black Horse Run in West Chester as well as over 75 trees planted in previous stream restorations on Plum Run and the East Branch of Red Clay Creek.

DELAWARE RIVER WATERSHED INITIATIVE

Trout Stocking

BRC is pleased to continue our work as part of this four-state initiative, funded by the William Penn Foundation, to improve the waters in the Delaware River Watershed from New York to New Jersey, Pennsylvania

and Delaware. Our work with six local conservation organizations; Brandywine Conservancy, Natural Lands, Stroud Water Research Center, The Nature Conservancy of Delaware and the University of Delaware Water Resources Center, is focused on the Brandywine-Christina watershed since 2014.

In 2018, the cluster team celebrated our work with Plain Sect farmers in Honey Brook with our second trout stocking in streams restored and protected with livestock fencing and forested stream buffers. Students, teachers and parents enjoyed stocking over 250 trout in the stream one bucket at a time.

In 2018 BRC offered nearly 20 unique member programs for participants of all ages. Offerings included our popular Books and Boots for 3-5 year olds, the annual Sunflower Celebration, as well as a variety of nature programming from outdoor yoga to crafting with nature.

Every effort was made to ensure the accuracy of our donor list. We regret any errors or omissions and we request you contact our development office at 610-793-1090. Thank you.

In 2018 Bob Struble, BRC Watershed Conservation Director, retired after 43 years with the organization. His accomplishments included: beginning the Brandywine Creek Clean-Up and Red Streams Blue programs, completing restoration plans and 17 stream restoration projects that improved the habitat and water quality of more than five miles of streams. Bob’s leadership at BRC and throughout the watershed conservation community has been invaluable and achievements will continue to live on for generations to come. Bob was honored at our 2018 annual dinner with the Clayton M. Hoff Award, an award that has only been given out six times since its inception.

In addition, BRC instituted the Robert G. Struble, Jr. Watershed Conservation Perpetual Fund to ensure that Bob’s legacy will continue. Please contact the BRC Development Office to learn about how you can contribute to this fund or create your own legacy through planned giving.
