This week we turn our calendar page to the month of July and begin our COUNTDOWN to transformation. We are an-ticipating the completion of our church renovation and the Dedication Mass on Aug. 10 with both gratitude and relief.

Once again, we are called to exercise patience. Let us sanc-tify our waiting with prayer. Pray for those who are making every effort to keep our temporary worship space comfortable, and pray for cooler days. Pray for the safety and well-being of our construction crew which is laboring in the heat to meet the deadline. Pray for the smooth transportation of our sacred art and furniture lovingly crafted by Artesanos Don Bosco Peru.

Finally, let each of us examine our hearts for ways we can mirror the transformation of our church in our own lives. May our place of worship that will be beautiful, inspiring and wel-coming reflect a community that invites, engages and serves all who approach.

Tickets for the Dedication Mass Aug. 10 have been alloted to dignitaries, clergy and representatives of our ministries. Parishioners will be able to pick up a limited number of tickets in the parish office beginning July 15. The Mass will be projected on a screen in the auditorium for those without a ticket who wish to participate.

Regular Masses in the church will resume that same day at 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., and continue with the usual Sunday schedule.

Stained glass needs funding

The original stained glass windows depicting the life of Mary are the jewels of our church. The current renovation presents an opportunity to add to this glorious legacy.

Two principal windows of Our Lady of the Assumption at the front of the church (exterior and interior) need sponsors. They are four feet in diameter.

Funding is sought also for six windows recently uncovered in the church “wings” near the altar. Five additional windows are potential candidates for stained glass.

After our church first opened in 1951, our legacy stained glass windows were added a few at a time as funds became available.

Facilities shut-down

Just a reminder that regular meetings of parish ministries and or-ganizations are suspended beginning Friday, July 12, until Aug. 12.

The annual cleaning of all rooms, hallways, restrooms and auditorium will be conducted by our maintenance staff.

Report from Vacation Bible School Vacation Bible School came ROARing in, and then went out like a frisky lamb. Many of the teen helpers (above) were “alumni” who had attended VBS as children. They provided awesome assistance, and learned about the Bible at the same time. The preschoolers, many in class for the first time, were attentive and well-behaved – no one cried or fidgeted! The week of crafts, games, music, dance, and Bible lessons concluded at a Mass with Father Paul and a picnic on the green. Church ministries provided dinner each night, and families provided donations of non-perishable food for the poor.

Disciples are a team In today’s Gospel passage from Luke, we find our Lord ap-

pointing disciples to go out and prepare others to receive the invi-tation into the Kingdom of God. Every verse has something to say about the way a Christian steward should approach others. Let’s look at least one of the coaching tips Christ gives.

In his wisdom, Christ sent is disciples out not as individuals but in pairs, as teams. This approach to evangelization certainly provided practical advantages. The disciples could lean on each other for mutual support and encouragement, helping each other to stay on task and to put their heads together to pray and problem-solve. This teamwork approach is just as relevant to us modern-day Christian stewards. It takes courage and commitment to go out and invite others into the Christian life. We need to work to-gether to do it well.

But there is also symbolic importance to working in teams. It points to the reality that when we invite others to embrace the Good News of the Gospel, we are not merely inviting them into a belief system, but into a relationship with Christ and through that relationship, into Christ’s family — our fellow Christian disciples near and far.

Our parish is our immediate spiritual family in this extended worldwide fold. We are not meant to live as isolated individuals within the parish any more than we are meant to live in isolation within our families. We are meant to be a community. That is why it is so important for us to foster a vibrant, supportive, welcoming parish life. This is why we emphasize hospitality as one of the pil-lars of stewardship. It is not enough just to point others to Christ, we must invite them to join us in community with him; we must offer a place and mission for them in the Church and within our parish family.

Stop Poverty team is coming Once again, Stop Poverty of Claremont will make a

summer visit to OLA on behalf of its annual fundraising Love and Peace Concert X planned Sept. 14. Ticket price is a reasonable $30 for a wonderful evening of upbeat en-tertainment at the Hope Center in Ontario.

Watch for them on the patio Sunday, July 28 after the 7 a.m., 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Masses.

Several members of the team are OLA parishioners dedicated to a wide range of services in communities at home and around the world – aid to start a small business, to provide homes for the neglected poor, and to assist fam-ilies affected by natural disasters.
