SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF

JESUS: THE REASON FOR THE SEASON

© Clare Colella

Today, at all our Parish Masses, we will hear the Gospel from Luke, the

story of the Nativity of Jesus and the message to the shepherds. The narrative is familiar to us. It

speaks of God’s great love for humanity expressed through the birth of a son to Mary and Joseph, of the house and family of David, King David of centuries past.

What may be less familiar is the first reading from the Prophet Isaiah, in which we hear the promise of the Messiah, the time of well-being and hope after the darkness of threat and oppression. This long-awaited Son of David would be the one to free God’s people from their bonds, their “darkness” and empower them to see the light of God shining in their lives again, to reassure them of God’s protection. The reign of the promised ruler would be a time of right relationships, justice and joy.

Other Masses of the Christmas feast (Vigil, Dawn and Day) have readings and prayers which give additional insight into both the time of waiting and preparation of the Hebrew people and the experiences of the early Christian community as expressed in and through the various letters of St. Paul and the Acts of the Apostles. Taking some time to read those and reflect helps us understand the hungers of the human heart for peace, friendship, security in our hope and faith. Being a faithful follower of Jesus gives us the model for establishing in our lives that spirit, those attitudes that help bring about fulfillment of those hungers.

Perhaps it is time to listen again the Handel’s “MESSIAH” to exult in the magnificent music that celebrates the Wonder-Counselor, the Prince of Peace. The lyrics, written by Charles Jenners, in Part 1, combine prophecies, psalm texts and the Gospel. This Part 1 gives us the powerful expression of hope and fulfillment that focus on Jesus as the heart of this Christmas Season. With the arrival of Christmas, much of the busyness of preparation now settles into the enjoyment of family and friends. It is a time for us to grow in generosity, gratitude, prayer and sharing with others. Remember that Christmas is a season, much more than just a day or two of celebrating.

Please continue to pray for our catechumens preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil: Gina Padilla, Mina Trejo and Sebastian Fernandez, our two baptized candidates preparing to enter the Catholic Church: Aman Stephanos and Stephen Barber and all those preparing for Confirmation. God bless you and yours! Blessed Christmas Season!

Living Stewardship Now

Choose a special gi from your whole family during the Christmas season and give it anonymously to a parish organiza on or a local charity.

THE ENVELOPE, PLEASE

It’s just a plain envelope on our Christmas tree every year. My husband used to hate the way the birth of our Savior is swamped with consumerism. One year, our son’s karate team was compe ng with kids from a poorer sec on of town. My husband commented on the visitors’ hand-me-down, poorly-fi ng uniforms. I wondered about the morale of these kids if they had proper ou its, so I bought some and sent them anonymously to their coach. I placed an envelope on the tree telling my husband that the uniforms were my gi to him. He was thrilled, and that began a new family tradi on—one year I sent teens with disabili es to visit the aquarium; food and household items went another year to a family whose home had burned down. Our children loved learning what was in Dad’s envelope. Sadly, my husband died last year. Yet I cried with happiness on Christmas morning to find four white enve-lopes from my children. My grandchildren crowded round excitedly, saying, “Open the envelopes, Grandma!” Copyright © 2010, World Library Publica ons. All rights reserved.

Copyright © 2010, World Library Publica ons. All rights reserved.
