CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL 2020
Dear Friends: Pope Francis likens the stone that sealed the tomb of Jesus to the tombstones of the pandemic that “threatens to bury all hope...” But he reminds us that “we are not alone, the Lord goes before us on our journey, and removes the stones that paralyze us. This is the hope that no one can take from us. The disciples of Jesus discovered something that we are now learning: No one is saved alone.” Support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal allows us to continue to serve so many in our community as you journey with us to bring hope to others. Through the Catholic Ministries Appeal we support the ministries that help us as we build up the Body of Christ, such as Pro-life efforts, formation of seminarians for the priesthood and Faith Formation and education of our children and young adults. We have been working together with our schools to assist the underserved to get much needed internet service so that children are able to continue their education and parents can work from home. It helps to support Catholic Charities and our Parish Outreach programs. Catholic Charities meets the needs of Long Island throughout the year, but during times of crisis they are on the front lines providing emergency services to those in need; expanding food programs and services for seniors who are isolated or homebound. Our Parish Outreach programs are working diligently to meet the needs of the growing demand of families reaching out to them for help. During this unique time, there are so many ways to bring hope to others. One way, if you are able, is to provide assistance by making a gift to the 2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Your continued support is critical at this time. We are so grateful for your generosity and commitment. Please know that you and your family are remembered in my daily prayer and Masses. Sincerely in Christ,
Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

TEXT TO GIVE
August 2—Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time:
In the Gospel, Jesus says: “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves,” and taking the five loaves and two fish, he blest them
and gave them to the disciples to feed the crowd.
Know that your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to help those living in poverty touches many lives just like the loaves and fishes.

Holy Spirit Prayer of Saint Augustine
Saint Augustine (354-430) created this poetic prayer to the Holy Spirit:
Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit,That my thoughts may all be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit,That my work, too, may be holy.Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit,
That I love but what is holy.Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit,
To defend all that is holy.Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit,
That I always may be holy.Amen.
Respect All Life We are to respect and give dignity to

Love is… Some might say that love is an overused word that has lost a lot of meaning in the past couple of decades. You hear the word used in so many different contexts that it gets confusing as to just what it means to people. You hear it said: I love my ice cream, I love that new movie, I love to go out for breakfast, I love my new school, I love you… I was inspired to go to a traditional source for a better definition of love, St. Thomas Aquinas, who wrote: “Love is effectively willing the true good of the other.” Wow! To understand what this means, is to get a greater appreciation of what Jesus meant when He said, “Love one another, as I have loved you.” Since love is God’s gift to us, then real love must be rooted in God’s love. That makes love “other centered”. It should be obvious in our words and deeds, especially the service we offer to one another. It means that we seek to work for the true good of the other person. Imagine that…God is asking us to work for another person’s true good. And it’s a command; a command that can never let us write off someone as hopeless or unworthy. Such a love has to have content. We just can’t talk about loving someone, we must specially promote the justice, truth, respect for life, fidelity and compassion everyone deserves from us. In other words, we must live “Gospel values” as we interact with one another. Isn’t this what Jesus lived and had in mind for us to live? To be able to love others in this way requires that we truly believe that we are loved in this way by God. It requires that we believe, that as his daughter or son, we are worthy of God’s love. It requires that we accept God’s gift of love in our lives…and live it for others. Imagine what a world that believes in this kind of love would be like. Isn’t this what everyone should know, live and experience???

Evangelization is our mission in the Church. It is the mission Jesus gave us when He said, “Go and make disciples of every nation…” (Matt. 28:19).
If we have been baptized into the Body of Christ, and given the Holy Spirit to share in Christ’s mission, we must do what He did: seek out the lost, gather people together, and share the good news of salvation. At the end of Mass, we are sent forth like the Apostles: “Go, and proclaim the Gospel with your life.”
The spiritual and corporal works of mercy also embody this call. The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is an opportunity to support the ministries that help us as we build up the Body of Christ.

The NYS Legislature was back in session May 26 and 27. There were few members in the chamber. Most members voted remote-ly. The bills being debated seemed not to impact the Life issues. The NYS budget that passed on April 3 did include a measure legalizing commercial gestational surrogacy. Surrogacy exploits women and treats children as property. The Boss Bill, long promoted by Planned Parenthood, waspassed into law in November 2019 requiring all employers, without exemption, from discriminating against a job candidate who holds beliefs and behaviors regarding “reproductive health issues” contradictory to the mission of the organization. The Assisted Suicide bill is still currently in committee. Other pending legislation includes Emergency Contraception on Campus: since one of the results of emergency contraception can be to prevent implantation, emergency contraception is aborti-facient. Prolife Pregnancy Center Disclosure legislation would man-date a government-designed statement for pregnancy centers to disclose they don’t provide abortions. This is a case of coerced speech. A similar law in California was overturned on the grounds it violated the constitutional right to free speech of life-affirming pregnancy centers. and women’s medical risks, prior to ‘informed consent’ for abortions. On May 15, the House adopted H.Res.965, setting rules during COVID emergencies for proxy voting (limit 10 votes / proxy) and video committee hearings. Electronic voting will be studied. Sen-ators are meeting with masks. The Supreme Court will release decisions on Religious Liberty, Life Issues/Conscience Protection in mid-to-late June. Informa-tion on these cases will be in Sept.’s LN. Jared Kushner has a key role in crafting the 2020 GOP platform. Reports are he wants it greatly streamlined from 2016's 58-page paper and seeks removal of any “alienating language.” Pro-lifers are monitoring. (realclearpolitics.com 5/28 & lifesitenews.com 5/29) Pro-abortionists are stating the Administration’s defunding of WHO is really an attack on sexual & reproductive health. A UN women’s council criticized the states that tried to deem abortuar-ies “non-essential” during COVID. Pro-aborts ‘egged’ pro-lifers at Waukegan, IL PlannedParenthood. The head of a Grand Rapids, MI abortuarymay have filed a false police report against Red Rose Rescuers. David Daleiden is suing Kamala Harris & Xavier Becerra for violating his rights. He also released videos of several PP officials admitting to selling aborted baby-parts. Planned Parenthood has at least $5M ready for Stateelections in November. NEW YORK STATE LEGISLATION
The TRACE Act, HR.6666, sits in the House. It would pay for COVID tests, and “mobile health units” that track who’s been ex-posed to an infected person. S. P. Morrison warns that‘eligible entities’ are so loosely defined that PP, smart-phone loca-tion apps*, or any activist org. could get funds. (www.americanthinker.com 6/1) *Apple has put API in latest iP-hone update, to enable future contact tracing apps. The House passed HR.6800, the $3 Trillion HEROES act. Speaker Pelosi’s bill would fund abortions and PP, since it re-moves Hyde Amendment protection from PPP money, federal-ly subsidized medical care pay-outs, and general funds given to States. {Reps. King, Meeks, Rice, Suozzi - yea ||| Rep. Zeldin - nea} The bill is now in the Senate. Politifact posted an analysis stating that the HEROES Act did not support abortion. Tom McClusky of March for Life noted eight specific ways the HEROES Act supports abortion. Division A, Title III provides for two relief funds that lack pro-life protec-tions. Division A, Title VI creates a Health Care Provider Relief Fund that could go to abortion providers. Division B, Title II ex-pands federal subsidies of employer-sponsored health insurance, including plans that cover abortion. Tax credits would subsidizethe cost of health insurance that may often include elective abor-tion and does not contain any Hyde protections. Division C, Title III pertains to private insurance provisions, and no Hyde protec-tions were applied to ensure that taxpayer dollars would not finance abortion-covering plans. Division I, Small Business Provisions removes the affiliation rule from the PPP which would allow Planned Parenthood access to the funds. Division Q, Title 8 creates a COVID-19 Heroes Fund to issue grants to essentialworkers. Nothing bars abortion clinic employees from eligibility for these funds. The Manager’s Amendment (Title VII – Other Matters, Sec. 30701) states that in all COVID-19 relief bills and provisions signed into law no person shall be “excluded from par-ticipation in, denied benefits of, or subjected to discrimination based on any factor…such as…pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions…” This provision could override Hyde pro-tections included in this bill and past COVID-19-relatedlegislation (CARES Act HR748, Families First Coronavirus Relief Act HR6201, and the Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act 2020, HR6074). The Manag-er’s Amendment also contains two provisions providing funding to group health insurance plans, and neither provision includes Hyde protection language. Planned Parenthood has already gotten $80M of PPP money, despite the CARES act saying they’re not eligible. Senators are de-manding a probe and a refund. Sen. Loeffler’s [R-GA] LIFE NOW act, S.3709 would ban any nonprofit involved in abortion from PPP funds, while funding non-profits with over 500 workers. Sen. Loeffler has also introduced the Women’s Right to Know Act, S.3388, to mandate nation-wide information on fetal devel-opment.

An Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.I embrace You as if You were already there and unite
myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.

This past year our Pastor, Fr. John McCarthy, offered to the Parish of Our Lady of Mercy the opportunity to explore all the wonderful magisterial content that FORMED has to offer for free.
Due to so many unforseen circumstances the Parish can no longer keep this offer for free. We know you and your family loved what FORMED has to offer for all of us. If you would like to continue to receive FORMED all you need to do is to go the website at FORMED.org/signup and sign up for you very own subscription and continue to learn more about our Catholic Faith on demand.
