Dear Parishioners, Recently, my wife Joanne and I celebrated our wedding anniversary. I thought it would be a good idea to look at the sacrament of marriage. What better way to look at marriage than to ask couples who have been married for a considerable amount of time. Deacon Jack and his wife Celeste, Deacon Tom and his wife Maria, and Joanne and I all were married in the same year. All of us have been married a combined one hundred and seventeen years. The teacher in me wants to ask the math question, can you tell me what year we all were married? Joanne has a magnet on the refrigerator that says, “The secret of a long marriage is old age.” Now while that might be somewhat humorous, I wanted to ask our deacon couples what accounts for their long marriages. Deacon Jack and Celeste both agreed they see each other as best friends, and cannot imagine life without each other. Faith has also played a large part of their long marriage. Deacon Tom and Maria said the secret to their successful marriage is patience, trust and faithfulness. Deacon John De Guardi and Anne have been married sixty-two years and the secret of their mar-riage is patience, kindness, loyalty and a strong shared faith. Deacon Jack Teufel and Betty, who have been married nearly sixty-one years, indicated faith plays a very big part of marriage that sees you through the good and bad times. In addition, having a deep respect for each other is crucial. The Teufels also have come to appreciate their family and friends, and the part they have shared in their marriage. Joanne and I were blessed with good examples of married life, our parents. All the responses above resonate with us, especially a strong faith life. I would like to add one more quality to the list, having a sense of humor. This quality has helped us deal with some of the difficult situations we have encountered in our married life. Father Brian, when he speaks to the Pre-Cana couples about Spirituality, likens marriage to a three- legged stool. The couple forms two legs of the stool, while the third leg is God. Including God in your marriage assures the proper balance in your relationship. God is with you in the good times as well as the bad. In an article written by Leonardo J. DeLorenzo in Our Sunday Visitor, he refers to the sacrament of marriage as the rarest and purest gift. In simple terms, Dr. DeLorenzo states that the gift of transparency, this intimacy is about being there with each other, for each other. Being there for each other means body, mind and soul. It is easy to become distracted in this day and age. It is important to be attentive to each other in marriage. Think of all your habits, and make being attentive to each other another habit. Make time for each other. I mentioned earlier that it was recently my wedding anniversary. In celebration of that, I planned a truly exciting, romantic day. First, Joanne and I attended a six and a half hour defensive driving course. I treated her to the course and lunch. Later in the evening, we dined at a restaurant on the Nautical Mile in Freeport. Remember what I said about having a sense of humor. By the way, if you add Deacon John De Guardi and Anne’s and Deacon Jack Teufel and Betty’s years of marriage to the other deacons, you come up with 240 years of wedded bliss. Something to think about. May God bless you, Deacon Rich

Victorian Tea In March when we postponed the Tea, it had been our hope to have it at some point later in the year. We’ve come to the decision that, for everyone’s safety, we will not be having the Tea this year. We’d like to make arrangements to return the money to those who have purchased tickets. Please contact the Outreach office at 631-661-3224, option 4 to make these arrangements. Thank you for your support and we are hoping to see you at the Tea in 2021!

Back To School Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of what school will be like this year, we will be moving our “Back To School” program to a gift card program for this year. Gift cards will offer greater flexibility and will help to provide for whatever the situation is for the year. We will be requesting gift cards from Target, Walmart, Dollar Tree, Staples, and Old Navy, or from any other place that you think would be helpful. As always, thank you for all the support you give to Outreach throughout the year.

Sharing the Gospel One day someone might sin against you. Friends may hurt your feelings. A neighbor may take your toy without asking. Remember what Jesus said. Remember that you sin, too. Talk it over quietly, just the two of you, and give your friend a chance to apologize.

Pray for those who have hurt you. Ask God to help you to forgive them.

Mission for the Week

Something to Draw Draw a picture of someone apologizing to you.

Prayer Be with me, Jesus, when someone has hurt me. Help me to forgive. Amen.
