Pope Francis: Fatima Reminds Us to Care for the Faith of Children Vatican City, May 14, 2017 / 06:07 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Sunday Pope Francis reflected on the May 13 canonization of the child visionaries St. Francisco and Jacinta Marto, saying that their faithfulness, despite their young age, reminds us to pay special attention to children in the ministry of the Church. “In Fatima the Virgin chose the innocent heart and the simplicity of little Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia, as guardians of her message. These children received it worthily, so to be recognized as reliable witnesses to the apparitions, and to become models of Christian life.”

“With the canonization of Francisco and Jacinta, I wanted to propose to the whole Church their example of adherence to Christ and of evangelical witness, and I also wanted to propose to the whole Church to take care of children,” he said May 14. The holiness of these children is not a consequence of the apparitions they received, he said, but of the “fidelity and ardor with which they returned the privilege they received of being able to see the Virgin Mary.” “After the encounter with the ‘beautiful lady,’ as they called her, they frequently recited the Rosary, they did penance and offered sacrifices for the end of the war and for the most needy souls of divine mercy.” This is what made them saints, he said. Pope Francis addressed around 25,000 people in St. Peter’s Square Sunday afternoon before praying the Regina Coeli. In his greeting, he expressed his gratefulness to God for the opportunity to make a pilgrimage to Fatima May 12-13 for the centenary of the apparitions, going “to the feet of the Virgin Mother as a pilgrim of hope and peace.” He also thanked the bishops of Portugal, and in particular the Bishop of Leiria-Fátima, António Augusto dos Santos Marto, as well as the local authorities and everyone who helped to organize the visit. “Last night I returned from the pilgrimage to Fatima,” he said, pausing to add a greeting to “the Madonna of Fatima!” followed by cheers from those present. “In Fatima, I was immersed in the prayer of the holy faithful people, a prayer that flows there for a hundred years as a river, to beg Mary's maternal protection on the whole world,” he went on. “From the very beginning, when in the Chapel of the Apparitions I stayed for a long time in silence, accompanied by the prayerful silence of all the pilgrims, a together and contemplative climate was created where the various moments of prayer took place.” And at the center of all of this, he said, was the Risen Lord present in the Eucharist. Even 100 years after the first appearance of Our Lady of Fatima there is still a great need for prayer and penance for the grace of conversion, Francis said. We also need prayers “to implore the end of so many wars that are everywhere in the world… and which disfigure the face of humanity.” “Let us be guided by the light coming from Fatima. The Immaculate Heart of Mary is always our shelter, our consolation, and the way that leads us to Christ,” he said. Following the prayer, the Pope spoke with sympathy for the people affected by wars and conflicts in the Middle East, both Christians and Muslims, who suffer from violence and discrimination. “My solidarity accompanies the memory of prayer,” he said, thanking all those who provide humanitarian aid and encouraging “the various communities to follow the path of dialogue and reconciliation to build a future of respect, security and peace.” He also mentioned the beatification in Dublin May 13 of Jesuit priest John Sullivan, who lived during the 19th and 20th centuries in Ireland. He was devoted to the teaching and training of young people, the Pope said, “and was loved and respected as a father to the poor and the suffering.” Pope Francis concluded his address by mentioning the celebration of Mother’s Day in several countries. “Let us remember with gratitude and affection all moms, even our moms in heaven, trusting them to Mary, the mother of Jesus,” he said, concluding with a moment of silent prayer for mothers.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, On the weekend of May 28, our diocese will take up a collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) and the Catholic University of America (CUA). Your donation to CCC helps bring the gospel message to the public square and invite all to encounter the love of God. As people access more and more information on mobile devices, there is an increased need to provide faith resources on these platforms, for example free podcasts of daily readings and email subscriptions in both English and Spanish so people everywhere are able to experience the Scriptures and are never far from the Word of God. Half of the funds collected will remain here in the diocese to fund our local communications projects such as the Sunday Television Mass. The other half will fund national communications efforts and international projects in developing countries. Your donation to CUA, the one and only national university of the Catholic Church in the United States, will provide scholarships to support highly qualified students in their intellectual growth. CUA strives to nurture, grow, and develop global citizens and leaders with the singular ability to think and act with purpose, through both reason and faith, the kind of citizens and leaders needed by the Church and the world now more than ever. Thank you for your ongoing generosity. Your support of the Catholic Communication Campaign and Catholic University of America will help to enrich society and invite all to encounter the love of God.

RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults 2017-2018 FALL ENROLLMENT

Are you thinking about joining the Catholic Church or learning more about it? Ask yourself these questions:

• • Where is your journey of faith leading you? • • Are you interested in knowing more about the Catholic Faith? • • Do you know someone who might be interested?

If so, come and see what the RCIA process is all about. The Right of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for non-Catholics who are interested in (or even thinking about) joining the Catholic Church. It’s a process for those who have not received all of their Sacraments. Each year our parish begins this process to welcome any and all who are curious about, interested in, or just want to know more about the Christian faith as it is lived and celebrated in the Roman Catholic Tradition. This process is an amicable faith-sharing among friends. ENROLLMENT: June 9, 2017 - September 6, 2017

PROCESS BEGINS: September 6, 2017

REGISTRATION FORM: A downloadable form is available at www.ollvchurch.org/faith-formation or in the Parish Office. Once you have filled out the registration form, Contact Julia Dodson at 702-802-2300 to set up a short 20-minute appointment to begin the process.

For three weeks, beginning May 21, we will be seeking the generosity of our parishioners to support our High School Youth Program. There will be 200 envelopes, labeled 1 - 200, posted on a large bulletin board in the vestibule of the church. Simply grab any envelope off of the board and return it with the amount that is shown on the front. So if you grab envelope #47, you would give $47. Take envelope #168, give $168. If you select envelope #1, that is 1 more dollar towards our goal. Your generous contributions will help us to invest in the teens of our parish so that we can continue to provide more meaningful and enriching experiences for them, and continue to build community amongst them, helping them to feel at home in the parish that they belong to. Q: Where do I submit my envelope?: A.: Place it in the CSA Box in the vestibule of the church or drop it off in the Parish Office. Q: Can I grab more than one envelope? A: YES! So if you grab envelope #150 and envelope #100, you would give $250 towards our goal. Q: What if all of the amounts in my price range are taken? Can I still give? A: YES! We will take any donations that you are willing and able to give. Later in the fundraiser we will have envelopes labeled "Other Amount". Simply grab one of those and write the amount you want to give on it.

We sincerely thank you for your generosity! Please address all questions to our Youth Minister, Marc Sayre, at [email protected].
