“You, Lord, are our father, our redeemer you are named forever.” - Isaiah 63:16b

It is more than a time for shopping . . . .. Advent

These next four weeks of our biblical and liturgical life is this Advent Season beginning today. There are many pow-erful, spiritual questions in our scriptures of Advent. Advent will lead us to a deep and meaningful Christmas season if we can be aware of some of the spiritual challenges we face today.

First Sunday of Advent Where is God’s activity, where is God’s work in our world, especially in times of anxiety? Am I willing to stand with God and God’s agenda in this season of commercial trivialization? What does it mean for me to participate in the work of God in an anxious and conflict ridden culture?

Second Sunday of Advent Repentance is not about being shamed but rather coming to a deeper awareness of whether or not we are partner-ing with God in being concerned about the big picture and not so much about my own needs?

Repentance during Advent helps us to be able to receive what God is offering. Can I let go of those things that make it impossible for me to fully embrace what God is offering in the message of Jesus.

If we are aware of the biblical questions and challenges, perhaps, this can be a joyful time of challenge and renewal.

Fr. Jack

From the Pastor’s Desk

Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, I abandon myself into your hands;

do with me what you will. Whatever you may do, I thank you.

I am ready for all, I accept all. Let only your will be done in me

and in all your creation - I wish no more than this, O Lord.

Into your hands I commend my soul, I offer it to you with all the love of my heart,

for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into you hands,

without reserve, and with boundless confidence,

for you are my King.

- Blessed Charles de Foucauld - adapted

A Buddhist Parallel To the Christian Eucharist

The Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh teaches this wisdom through the ceremony and meditation of tea.

You must be completely awake in the present to enjoy the tea. Only in the awareness of the present, can your hands feel the pleasant warmth of the cup. Only in the present, can you savor the aroma, taste the sweetness, appreciate the delicacy. If you are ruminating about the past, or worrying about the future, you will completely miss the experience of enjoying the cup of tea. You will look down at the cup, and the tea will be gone. Life is like that. If you are not fully present, you will look around and it will be gone. You will have missed the feel, the aroma, the delicacy and beauty of life. It will seem to be speeding past you. The past is finished. Learn from it and let it go. The future is not even here yet. Plan for it, but do not waste your time worrying about it. Worrying is worthless. When you stop rumi-nating about what has already happened, when you stop worry-ing about what might never happen, then you will be in the pre-sent moment. Then you will begin to experience joy in life.

As you eat your next meal - perhaps with family gathered for Thanksgiving - enter into the experience mindfully. Savor the aroma. Taste the sweetness. Appreciate the delicacy. Experi-ence the joy, right now - without needing anyone to notice. But they will!

The Story Of The Advent

Wreath

Advent wreaths were originally part of folk traditions of Northern Europe. Wreaths of evergreens were decorat-ed with candles to symbolize life and

light during the dark months of winter. Legend has it that Saint Boniface first gave the wreath its Christian meaning in the eight century, and we have been using these wreaths as part of our advent preparation ever since.

The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God. The evergreens signify con-tinuous life. Each of the four candles represents one of the Sundays of Advent. The purple candles represent the pray-er, penance, preparation, and good works we are called to do during Advent. The color purple signifies the “royalty” of Jesus Christ.

The pink candle is lit on the Third Sunday of Advent, which is the Sunday of rejoicing. The light of the candles reminds us that Jesus comes into the darkness of our lives to bring newness, life, and hope. We gradually add more light each Sunday until Christ, our Light, comes at Christmas.

Catholic Community Services Appeal For The Poor

Catholic Community Services 2017 Appeal for the Poor is here! Our parish will be participating in this year-end appeal to support our Catholic Charities Agency in Western Wash-ington.

The CCS Appeal for the Poor is a tangible way you can part-ner with us to provide essential, life-sustaining services to families in need. Please know that your gifts can translate into innovative housing solutions for the homeless, basic need items such as food, clothing and hygiene supplies, re-covery and mental health counseling, and support for veter-ans, farmworkers, youth, the elderly, and those living with disabilities.

Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services serve people of all beliefs and offer more than 175 programs and services over 100,000 people in need each year — and it’s all because of you. We ask you to prayerfully consider making a financial gift to the 2017 CCS Appeal for the Poor in support of our mission of compassion. 25% of all the funds raised through this appeal will be returned to our parish to use in our own community. Over 50 Funsters

MONTHLY: On the 2nd Wednesday of the month, come to the kitchen in the Walmesley Center at 9:00 a.m. and help to make 300 sandwiches for the St. Martin de Porres Center. It takes 30 to 45 minutes.

MONTHLY: On the 2nd Thursday, of the month, come to the down-stairs conference room in the Pastoral Center at 9:30 a.m. for a potluck breakfast. Bring an egg dish, fruit or pastry, or just come! We always seem to have plenty.

COMING UP: On Sunday, December 10th, we will attend the 2:00 p.m. matinee performance at the Burien Actors Theater. The play is “The Christmas Carol Rag” - a delightful, irreverent musical take on the Dickens classic. Sound like fun to you? Call Joan Bateman at 206-938-0851 to reserve your ticket - they are $13 each (senior group price). After the play, we will go to Angelo’s for dinner. You do NOT have to be on the Over 50 Funsters roster to participate. All are welcome!

Amazon Smile

Amazon Smile helps Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. If you register OLG on your Amazon account and place your order through Amazon Smile, the parish gets a little rebate from each order - tiny, but many transac-tions add up. Thank you!

High School Youth Planning Team

This year, we have several high school students who are prepar-ing to be baptized at the Easter Vigil. In our efforts to support them and our other high school students, our parish is looking for persons (teenagers and adults) who would like to be part of a team to assist in providing spiritual and social support for our high school youth this year. The commitment would involve planning monthly activities for high school youth, sometimes in collaboration with other parish events. Contact Helen at 206-935-0358 or [email protected].

Christmas Flower Donations

It is that time of year to begin planning for our Christmas celebra-tions. The Arts and Environment committee is hard at work cre-ating another wonderful place for worship and prayer and your donations can help with this effort. Envelopes are in the pews. You can also donate at our parish website. Donations in honor or in memory of a loved one are also possible. Thank you for your generosity!

Do You Like To Bake?

We are in need of some goodies for our Wednesday night RCIA group. Our hope is to have 3-4 volunteers who can rotate in providing hospitality for our many participants. Contact Helen, 206-935-0358, [email protected] if interested.

From The Pastoral Center

Our Lady Of Guadalupe School Anton Kramer, Principal

[email protected] 206-935-0651 - X102

Our Lady of Guadalupe School thrives because of generous support from people like you. The investment of hundreds of parish and school families over the years has made OLG an out-standing learning environment and a wonderful community. Please be part of that continued

tradition with a pledge to this year's School Fund Drive!

The School Fund Drive supports three areas of school life: tuition assistance, teacher professional development, and an endowment investment to ensure a vibrant future.

This year's School Fund Drive will focus primarily on tuition assistance. Your support will allow us to open our doors to families who may not otherwise be able to afford a Catholic education as well as to help families that may be going through a temporary rough patch financially.

Our goal this year is to raise $80,000.

Please help us by pledging your support. Donations can be made online at www.guadalupe-school.org or by contacting Carrie Morris-sey at [email protected].

If you have already made a donation, thank you for your support. Your generosity and spirit help to guide our youth into tomorrow and grow the next generation of leaders. If you have not yet made a gift, please prayerfully consider what amount makes sense for your family and pledge accordingly. Your participation will help us meet our goal and is truly appreciated.

Participate In The OLG Auction Parish Consortium!

It’s that time of year again! The OLG school auction is on Saturday, March 3rd in the Walmesley Center and we invite you to be a part of the OLG Auction Parish Consortium again this year. The goal is to raise at least $2,000 from the Parish that can go towards funding a travel package or to procure a fun item that is guaranteed to bring high bids at the Auction. Please consider donating by writing a check to the OLG Parent Organization and mark in “OLG Parish Consortium”. Watch for an announcement at the masses in the next few weeks with more information about how to get involved in the Parish Consortium, volunteer at the auction, or attend the auction in your 1920’s finery for our “Roaring ‘20’s” theme. Thank you in advance for helping us continue this tradition and support of OLG School. For more information, please contact Christa or Brian Callanan at [email protected] or 206-937-2855.
