From the Pastor’s Desk
Joyous Easter To Parishioners And Visitors
My fourteenth Easter with you moves me to express my gratitude for the opportunity to be your pastor for so many years. I am grateful for your faith and your willingness to express our faith in worship and humble service toward one another and those beyond our communi-ty. Easter Sunday, and the Easter weeks following, give us the oppor-tunity to explore more deeply the story of Jesus life, death, and resur-rection as it connects to our own human journey of living, loving, facing challenges, suffering, dying, and finding new life. Wherever you are on your life journey, I offer the hope of the Christian commu-nity as a place of prophetic new understanding and the support of community. Welcome today and always! Happy Easter!
Fr. Jack
Easter Oils
Last week, Archbishop Sartain blessed the oils that will be used in our sacramental life. Three oils are central to our Catholic life and minis-try. Soon our oils will have a new, more prominent, location near our new Baptismal font.
Oil of the Sick, for the use of which St. James is the witness, provides the sick with a remedy for both spiritual and bodily illness, so that they may have strength to bear up under evil and obtain pardon for their sin.
The Oil of Catechumens extends the effect of baptismal exorcisms: it strengthens the candidates with the power to renounce evil and sin before they go to the font of life for rebirth.
The Chrism is a sign that Christians incorporated by Baptism into the pascal mystery of Christ, dying, buried and rising with Him, are shares in His prophetic priesthood and that by Confirmation they receive the spiritual anointing of the Spirit who is given to them.
Are You Ready To Explore Intimacy With God?
Since the beginning of Advent, a small group of parishioners have been meeting in prayer to discern whether or not this might be the time to explore a more intentional community within the parish based on a deepening experience of God in contemplative prayer.
Questions - When would you have the opportunity to explore this possibility?
Beginning on April 30th at 12:30 a.m. in church, you are invited to come and be introduced to contemplative prayer and have your ques-tions responded to. This group will meet on the Sundays of May at 12:30 p.m. to pray for about an hour. If you have hungered for a deeper experience of God in your life, this might be God knocking on your door.

Debt Elimination Report
Thank you to those who have already made a pledge or a gift toward our parish goal of eliminating our debt by Advent, 2017. Below you will find a summary of the Debt Elimination Campaign as of March. You can join forces with your commu-nity of faith by using the envelopes in the pews to set up a pledge or a gift of cash on hand. A gift or pledge of any amount will move us toward the goal of unlocking the future, a future without a debt. With your support, we will continual-ly chip away at our debt, working our way toward a bright future for OLG.
Was the debt anticipated when we began our building pro-jects, i.e. The Walmesley Center and the parish offices and meeting spaces? Yes. When we surveyed the parish before construction, your generosity and desire for the projects was evident and professionals helped us determine what financial support was in the parish. The Archdiocese loaned us the money with the understanding that after the buildings were in use we would conduct a campaign to eliminate the debt.
Is the debt elimination campaign being driven by pressure from the Archdiocese? No. The choice to eliminate the debt now is for the financial benefit to the parish. In fact, the fund that lends to parishes would probably prefer us to keep pay-ing the interest.
Does every cent I give to debt elimination go directly to reduc-ing the principal? Yes.
Is the campaign being driven to free Fr. Jack to be able to re-tire? No. Funds were saved for these renovation projects and generous benefactors have stepped forward to enable the renovation and the new Baptismal font.
Everything our parish accomplishes is because of parishioners like you who are the parish. Thank you for your generous support.

Congratulations And God’s Blessings
At the Easter Vigil, we celebrate the Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion of Mark Sexaur. We also celebrate the Rite of Reception into Full Communion with the Catholic Church with Matt Bliesner and Frances Parks. They now enter the period called Mystagogia. This is a time for them to grow in deepening their grasp of the paschal mystery and in making it part of their lives through meditation on the Gospel, sharing in the Eucharist, and doing the works of charity.

Outreach Ministry
Youth Migrant Project Summer Mission Trip For Teens
The Youth Migrant Project is back! Once again we’ll be teaming up with St. Mary’s and St. Anne’s for a fun and life-changing week July 2nd-7th. Jennifer Ibach and JC Santos will help lead the trip, which is open to all graduating 8th graders (or 14+ years old) through graduating high school seniors. We stay at St. Charles in Burlington and work in a variety of migrant ministries in the Skagit Valley, in-cluding distributing food and clothing, creating a fiesta for the chil-dren in a camp, and attending Mass in a camp. In addition to serv-ing, we will learn about migrant life and reflect on our faith in light of these realities. There are two mandatory preparation meetings on May 21st and June 11th, both at 5:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s. The cost of the trip is $200, but partial scholarships are available. Be-cause there are three parishes participating, space in very limited. If you are interested in attending, or have questions, contact Jen-nifer Ibach at 206-935-0358, Ext. 120 or [email protected]. Ap-plications are available in the parish office and online on the Out-reach page (www.olgseattle.org/outreach) under “Documents” and are due Monday, May 8th.
The OLG Giving Garden Needs You!
The growing season is almost upon us and the OLG Giving Garden has 10 great beds ready for adoption (starting April 15th). As many of you know, the OLG Giving Garden was started with the goal to grow fresh produce to donate to the White Center Food Bank via the weekly Lettuce Pray donation box that is in the back of the church during the growing season. It is a great opportunity for families, individuals, groups of friends, classrooms, scout troops and more to participate in a fun and important ministry. Teens can earn their school-required com-munity service hours by helping out in the garden as well. Please con-tact Laura Vanderpool at [email protected] (note the two “a”s in the middle) or by phone at 206-856-7336 for more infor-mation or to reserve your spot today!
Fostering Futures: Foster Care, Adoption & Advocacy Forum
There is a critically high number of foster children in Washington State, and that number continues to rise. You are invited on April 25th to learn more about how you can get involved in volunteer opportunities, providing temporary care or adoption. Presenters include current fos-ter parents, Catholic Community Services, a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteer and a Child Welfare Social Worker. This event is from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at St. Luke’s Auditorium (322 N. 175th Street, Shoreline). Register at Eventbrite.com. Co-sponsored by the Archdiocese of Seattle.
What Slaveholders Think: A Conversation With Author Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick
Catholics have long advocated for an end to modern day slavery, but why do women, men, and children around the world continue to be exploited? Join the Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center in welcom-ing the author of a new book, What Slaveholders Think, which explores the reasons why human traffickers exploit people for profit. Sunday, April 23rd from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Assumption Parish, 6201 33rd Avenue NE Seattle, WA 98115. No cost for this event. For more information, contact IPJC at 206-223-1138 or [email protected].
CRS Rice Bowl: Encounter The Risen Christ
We prayed, fasted and gave alms, and now we celebrate Easter joy! Our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl ends as we encounter our risen Lord. We reflect on our brothers and sisters whom we have walked with in India, Zambia, El Salvador, Mexico, Ethiopia and Hawaii. And we commit to bring Easter joy to each person we meet in our daily lives. If you haven’t already, please remember to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl donations at the parish office or via the Sunday collection (you can make checks out to “OLG” with “Rice Bowl” in the memo). You can also do-nate to Rice Bowl via your online giving account. Thank you for helping to change lives around the world!
Living With Dignity And Freedom From Oppression
How can we stand in solidarity as faith communities with our immi-grant brothers and sisters? How are human trafficking and today’s im-migration crisis linked? Join us at Seattle First Baptist Church on Thurs-day, April 27th from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to learn from experts in the community about how to support immigrant human trafficking survivors and what resources are available to them. Presenters include Joanne Alcantara from API Chaya and Giselle Cárcamo from the Intercommuni-ty Peace and Justice Center (IPJC). The second half of the gathering will focus on how to empower those in your church community who may be facing exploitation and abuse, but who might be afraid to come for-ward. For more information contact the Missions Office at [email protected] or 206-382-4580. Register at dignityandcompassion.eventbrite.com.
St. Vincent de Paul Society
During March 2017, members of St. Vincent de Paul have volunteered 75 hours and provided goods and services to 268 people amounting to $16,727. This has included providing food, clothing, hygiene items, medicine, medical treatment, bus tickets, rent, utilities and household goods. Over 40 people were kept from becoming homeless because St. Vincent’s helped to pay their rent or provide a motel room. Another 98 people got help with their utilities, preventing their heat from being turned off in these cold months. Please be as generous as you can with your donations and in the collection of food at Sunday Masses and please keep these members in your prayers as they follow Christ’s words—“feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless.” March, 2017 - Donations Received = $4,771.21 Assistance Given = $16,727

Prayers And Squares Quilt Ministry Continues To Serve Our Community With Love
Prayers and Squares officially became a Chapter Member #1158 on October, 20, 2014. As a ministry, over 60 quilts have been made and presented, each a special gift of love and hope.
The beautiful quilts that you see in the back of our church are quilts made by our Prayers and Squares ministry team which meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Parish Pastoral Center. If you want to join our ministry, please call the parish office at 206-935-0358. It does not matter if you have been a quilter for years or have no experience and just want to learn, please come and fellowship with some wonderful ladies who serve our community so faithfully.
Quilts become prayer quilts as a result of the prayers that are tied into them. When a request for a prayer quilt is made from a fami-ly, we ask for any special prayer intentions that we can make avail-able for our community to pray for when tying the prayer knots. When the prayer quilt is presented, they can feel each prayer by all of the prayer knots that are tied just for them. Here is what you do:
Pick up untied thread and make a square knot (right over left, then left over right). Pull the not firmly against the surface of the quilt.
Offer a prayer for the person who will receive the quilt. Please remember that person in your regular prayers through-out the week.

Praying The Living Rosary As A Community Sunday, May 7th starting at 9:30 a.m. in the Walmesley Center
As A community of faith, we would like to invite you to a special tradi-tion here at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish - praying the Living
Rosary. A Living Rosary is when we gather as a community and each person partici-pating represents a bead of the rosary, leading that prayer.
As we celebrate the season of Easter, taking time to experience the power of praying the Living Rosary together will be a wonderful preparation leading us to Pentecost. Please RSVP to Marion Kari at [email protected], or call 206-935-0358.
Easter Prayer
The veil of darkness transformed by the brightness of light. The most dreadful end becomes the most beautiful beginning. The depths of despair fade to reveal Hope everlasting. The curse of death defeated by eternal life. Thank you, Lord, for the wonder of Easter. We are an Easter People and Alleluia is our song!
Seamstress Wanted
Seamstress needed to make slacks for my disabled mother - regular clothing is just not fitting her. She lives at Providence Mt. St. Vincent. Please call or email Stephanie Schuler at 206-714-7053 or [email protected] if you can help. I’d be more than happy to pay for your services!
OLG Community
Knights Of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus are Catholic men, 18 years and older, who
are committed to making their community a better place, while sup-
porting their parish. Being a Knight is more than camaraderie; it is
being involved with your community; it is supporting your local
Catholic Church, while enhancing your own faith; it is about pro-
tecting and enhancing your family life. We meet monthly and help
various causes in our parish and greater community. Recent benefi-
ciaries of our donations include the Special Olympics of Washington
State and Rice Bowl through the Lenten Fish Frys’. We assist with
various parish functions such as the Christmas Tree lighting ceremo-
ny, OLG Feast Day Fiesta and pancake breakfasts. If you are inter-
ested in joining, please visit www.kofc.org or email
[email protected] for more information.
2017 Day Of Service - Thank You!
The OLG community is amazing! On Saturday, March 25th,
Guadalupens, young and old, went out to serve our community
through the OLG Day of Service. We had over 170 people sign up - a
new record! We served at ten different sites with four of them being
new additions this year. Thank you for all that you did to make this day
possible. You impacted the lives of so many people here and the lives
of the people they were able to serve.
Thank you to all those that participated. Thank you to those who were unable to participate but held us in your prayers. A very special thanks to our project leads, planning committee members and speakers: Rita Gazewood, Lucille Van der Hagen, Lauren Hobbs, Colleen Duffy, Jen-nifer Ibach, Samantha Depue, Nicole Monroe, Dani Flannigan, Ben Marre, Carolyn Woodhouse, Erin and David Pedras, Kelley Mackenzie, Sofia Pedras and Carl Buher.
Here is what people said about what they took away from the experi-ence: Greater awareness of what life is like for prisoners. How a few people can do mighty things. How joyful everyone was to be doing something for someone else. Great getting to know other OLG families that I hadn’t talked to
before. The struggles faced by refugees resettling in this country. The need of people for food bank support and the range of ser-
vices which the food bank provides its clients and area, from food to advocacy.
It was our family’s first time to volunteer for something like this together. It was eye opening and we all felt really good we could interact with the community in this way.
OLG Night With The Mariners

Peace Garden Construction
What is that construction that has been going on near the Peace
Garden?
We have a new concrete path to our Parish Peace Garden thanks
to Chris Manning’s Eagle Scout Project! Now it is accessible and
safe to access our garden beds. Thank you to him and his won-
derful volunteers for a job well done!
Driftwood is needed to complete the landscaping around the new
path. We are looking for a couple of large and unique driftwood
pieces to accent the space. Contact Helen at 206-936-0358 if you
can help us out.

April Is Child Abuse Prevention Month
Did you know?
All dioceses and eparchies have Victim Assistance Coor-dinators, assuring that victims of abuse will be heard. In 2016, dioceses and eparchies provided outreach and support to 250 victims/survivors and their families who came forward to report abuse. Continued support was also provided to 1,510 victims/survivors and their fami-lies who reported abuse in prior years.
