23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time Sept. 4, 2016 Pastor Notes
Dear Friends, Well, all good things come to an end! School’s back in, and with Labor Day our summer is winding down. As our children return to the classrooms, please be alert on the streets and parking lots. Also, please keep our students, teachers, staff, and school on your own prayer lists as thy begin another year of grace. We are Blessed with Our Lady of Hope/St. Luke School- the only Catholic school in our local area. Sr. Irene and the faculty take the task of teaching our children very seriously, and it shows in the love that I see them sharing in our halls. Feel free to talk to Sister or myself about the great things going on this year: and please share the good news of our school with your friends, families, and neighbors. It really is one of the best things that we do as a Catholic community! In God’s Peace, Fr. Austin

Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern.” Pope Francis,9/16/13 The Catholic bishops of the United States are pleased to offer once again to the Catholic faithful Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship their teaching document on the political responsibility of Catholics. This statement represents their guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and duties as participants in our democracy. They urge pastors, lay and religious faithful, and all people of good will to use this statement to help form their consciences,: to teach those entrusted to their care; to contribute to civil and respectful public dialogue; and to shape political choices in the coming election in light of Catholic teaching. The statement lifts up our dual heritage as both faithful Catholics and American citizens with rights and duties as participants in the civil order. Conscience Protection Act: Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan and
Archbishop William E. Lori- as chairmen of the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities and Ad Hac
Committee for Religious Liberty, respectively- commended the U.S.
House of Representatives for passing the Conscience Protection Act of
2016 (S.304) on July 13 in a 245-182 bipartisan vote… “The vast
majority of medical personnel- and 85% of OB-GYNs ,specifically –
do not want to be involved in abortion. Whether their reasons are
religious or non-religious, their conscientious objection to abortion is
worthy of the highest respect and protection,” they said. The
Conscience Protection Act offers much-needed protection for religious
employers, as well. “In light of disturbing recent developments, even
churches and religious organizations are being required to cover
abortions in violation of their beliefs,” they said. “ We now urge
Congress to move this vital legislation forward as part of this year’s
must-pass appropriations package,” Cardinal Dolan and Archbishop
Lori said. For more on the bishops ’promotion of conscience rights,
including a video about a nurse who was coerced to take part in a late-
term abortion, visit: www.usccb.org/conscience.
