Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Mission Statement

Rooted in the gospel, we are a Christ centered community guided by the Holy Spirit, embracing a future full

of hope, empathy and compassion, reaching out to all, especially the marginalized, seniors and the youth.

From the Pastor’s Pen

Dear Parishioners,

I would like all the parishioners to know that from time to time we may have to move a WEEKDAY MASS to either Most Precious Blood or Our Lady of Guadalupe or simply cancel a weekday

mass when one of us priests need to be away or when we have multiple weekday masses with school masses (5 schools including F.J. Brennan, St. Rose, St Teresa of Calcutta, St. Anne’s French

Immersion and Corpus Christi Middle School) Nursing home masses, Retirement home masses and regular parish masses. For these rea-sons and many more, it is very important to read carefully the

Weekday Mass schedule in your Sunday bulletins. At the present time the Diocese of London does not permit Deacons to celebrate a Liturgy of the Word with distribution of Holy Eucharist

unless there is an emergency that arises.

I share this information with you all so that everyone will understand if and when a weekday mass time may change or be cancelled. As

you very well know, Father David and I will continue to do our best to celebrate as many masses as we can during the week. Thank you.

October is designated as the month of the Rosary and stems

from the church’s desire to extend thanksgiving to Our Lady through-out the whole month.

Please pray the Rosary. The family that prays together stays

together.

Last weeks announcement regarding our moving forward as a parish with a new hall and parking lot was well received. Our

parish has a wonderful steering committee to lead us into a future full of hope. As we continue to work together I ask that we all keep in mind and heart the words of Saint Oscar Romero, “let us stand

together intimately in faith” as we bring the late Father Dennis Wilhelm’s dream to a reality for Our Future!

God Bless you all,

Father Greg

JESUS: MODEL OF TOTAL SELF-GIVING

Why is it that, whichever way you turn a compass, the needle always swings north?

The answer is that our planet has a solid iron core surrounded by an ocean of liquid hot metal. It be-haves like a giant magnet.

Eight hundred thousand years ago, however, should you find yourself facing north with a compass, the needle would point “south.” Scientists researching sediments below the ocean floor have discovered that every so often, earth’s po-larity has flipped. The reversal does not happen overnight; it takes thousands of years.

Human beings also experience a strong “pull,” usually in the direction of self-advancement. Like earth’s polarity, that urge is neither constant nor irreversible – though it can take a long time for our insistent ego to flip in the opposite direction. Any parent will tell you how difficult it is to per-suade a child to let a younger sibling come first for a change. Even as adults, some of us still hanker after some social dis-tinction which marks us from the rest. Status matters.

To be admired was as important in Jesus’ time.

The Roman Empire was a world of patronage. Prestige de-pended on cultivation connections with those higher on the social scale, one favor in exchange for another. Such norms were not alien to ancient Jewish culture: status was im-portant – even to Pharisees. Today’s Gospel tells of two fish-ermen who had abandoned their business to follow Jesus. They believed that he was going to be king of the Jews. Nat-urally, they anticipated favors in return for their loyalty. There seems to have been an expectation of rapid promo-tions when Jesus rose to power. The two brothers were not especially greedy – just products of the thinking of their time.

Jesus was a product of that same culture, yet, over him am-bition had no hold. Quite the reverse: the “magnetic pull” within him was away from himself towards people who were vulnerable and despised. He experienced a gut-wrenching compassion for anyone who suffered. Again and again, he turned aside to help and care and listen. His vision for the kingdom of God was not the substitution of one set of powerful rulers for another but a radical alternative.

In the “reverse polarity” of God’s kingdom, it would be those who were poor and sick who mattered most. Leaders would no longer be driven by power and prestige but by the desire to be of service. The kingdom of God was to be a world turned upside down.

This was no impossible ideal.

Wherever Jesus went, new and glorious possibilities were opening before people’s eyes. They saw sickness being healed; little children cherished; the marginalized accepted into communities. Everywhere, ordinary struggling people were finding hope and forgiveness. The way Jesus wanted to be remembered was not as one who ruled, but as one who served. His ultimate act of service was this: to go will-ingly to the shameful execution reserved for slaves so that others might find life, freedom and dignity. Such was true greatness.

Jesus asks of us, as he asked of those ambitious disciples, “Can you drink the cup that I must drink?”

We may hesitate to say, “yes.” We too are products of a culture obsessed with status. The compulsion to establish rank still drives people to clamber over one another to reach the top. For us to hold different values is to risk being left behind. Selfless people will always be the “nobodies” of a society whose core question is ”What’s in it for me?”

“What is it you want me to do for you?” is the question Je-sus asked James and John in today’s Gospel.

Self-gift is the model of true greatness that Jesus sets before God’s servants, and it may cost us more than a bit of spare change. The baptism to which Jesus invites us is no less than a flipping of the polarity within us, whereby God can estab-lish God’s throne in the place where our egos once held court. Christian compassion extends beyond the cozy circle of our associates; it is far more than the exchange of one favor for another.

The call of Christ is to give freely to those who have nothing to offer in return. Though it may cost us dearly, such sacri-fice will one day be rewarded in God’s own way. Then we will understand how far this world’s glamor falls short of glory.

Thanksgiving Appeal Reminder At Thanksgiving, we are reminded of our blessings of

prosperity and family, as well as our responsibili-ties. Every year, our parish takes up an annual collec-tion that raises the money needed to fund our parish lo-cally and as part of our diocesan family. Caring for oth-ers and seeking social justice are deeply rooted in our faith: in the Gospel, Jesus directs us to help the poor,

feed the hungry and clothe the naked. Together, people and parishes are united in our incredible mission to bring Christ’s light to the world. Please give as generously as you are able, and please pray for those in need. Please

use our special envelope or donate online at www.dol.ca.

Come and See Weekend at St. Peter's Seminary St. Peter's Seminary invites you to a discernment re-treat on Oct. 26-28 for men 17-45 years old considering a call to the priesthood. World Mission Sunday

This weekend every Catholic parish in the world cele-brates World Mission Sunday to focus attention on the

missionary needs of the church. World Mission Sunday celebrates our unity as a human family and provides an

opportunity to support the life-giving presence of our Church among the suffering and the poor. World Mis-

sion Sunday was established in 1926 as a day by which the whole church can live out its’ mission – to share the Gospel with others so that all the faithful can become

disciples of Jesus. The focus of this year’s collection is: “With Youth, We proclaim the Gospel to all.”

On Sunday November 4, at the 11 am mass

Knights of Columbus will be having a memo-

rial mass for the deceased members.

Save the Date—November 3-4

Ministry Fair

Our parish is supported by many people who work in

different Ministries. We thank them for their dedication

and service. The Ministry Fair is an attempt to encourage

participation at Our Lady of Guadalupe. During the Fair,

representatives will be available to witness, answer

questions and concerns regarding their Ministry. Please join

us for a time of fellowship and discernment in the hall fol-

lowing all Masses on November 3rd and 4th.
