THE MAKING OF MOJO
Following an insight that interior specifications are becoming ever more demanding, we recognise the need to respond to different levels of comfort and
materiality in the contract furniture market. This was the starting point for Mojo and what became our most demanding of chair project to date.
The Mojo Chair is a technically sophisticated polymer based chair, inspired by the form of a classic wooden chair made popular in the 1960s.
The seat and backrest components follow subtle plywood forms which are the defining characteristic of the chairs identity. The chairs frame and arm rests
follow the same wood inspired approach, however using a modern polymer material and manufacturing technique, which makes light of more complex
wood forms and fixing capabilities.
This type of construction creates a dialogue with interior designers providing endless colour, material and comfort combinations. We have also invested in the latest digital product customising software, providing the ability to easily
visualise thousands of different product combinations on the fly.
MOJO MADE FROM
RECYCLED PP
Origin has recently made huge strides forward in moving to a more sustainable, recycled based polymer for use in its plastic chairs. The decision
to switch to a recycled PP is part to our ambition to build an ever more sustainable furniture company and provides us the ability re-engineer our poly
ranges for the next generation.
MOJO is now made from 60% post consumer PP combined with 30% Virgin PP and 10% glass-fibre. The new compound material has been optimised to
maintain the products aesthetic appeal and its durable qualities, but now in a more environmentally friendly approach.
Durability is key to ensuring product longevity, which is why Mojo has been designed to withstand stringent contract testing standards. If however a
part does need replacing, Mojo has been designed to disassemble into its constituent parts, so they can be easily replaced and ultimately recycled.
‘Using recycled polypropylene gives a new life to old products and instead of ending up in a landfill somewhere, they are melted down and reformed into new products. This re-eincarnation effect provides materials a second
chance, and the more second chances we give materials the closer we can get towards achieving our ambitions.
Whilst it has always been our aim to make chairs from a recycled polymer based material, the technical performance hasn’t always been to the standard required. Now, after years of persistence, sub-standard materials and many a failed trial, we have finally had some success in this new winning formulae.
I believe there are a number of things driving developments in material sustainability, from technical improvements making materials more durable and accessible, to growing consumer pressure driving demand for more
sustainable products. If we continue on this path, improving our sustainable operations, the future of Origin and the planet are looking better than ever.’
