SUBJECTs Wing Leader's Narrative. Mission No 76. 27 May 1944. (Lead Box)

1. The 40lst Group turniahed the lead and low box for the 94th CBW "B" formation. The high box wa1 furnished by the 1st CBJ. T.o. and as1embly ot the lead box waa as briefed on the X bunoher. The low and high box formed well during the assembly period. and when the fling left point X, the ing fo~ation wa1 good. The complete route was flown very nearly aa briefed. except for a small loss of time enroute to the target. (See avagator 1 s Log) At Division assembly line. the wing briefed to be second in Division .. Assembly was 2 minutes late. and the 94th B fell 1n 2nd place behind the Division leader. Before the IP, the ing briefed for second position desired to regain t is po1ition. The 94th "B" did a double drift and allowed this wing to move forward. The 94th "B" then fell in trail in third position, as originally briefed. Thi1 cau1ed no contusion. and waa executed with no lo1a of formation o~ time.

2. At the IP the eather appeared to be CAW and a decilion to make a visual run waa made. The boxes took interval very nicely, and each made a good uninterrupted bomb run. The results from all tl~ee boxes were fair to good. The 40lst lead box has approx~tely 95% of the bombs in 2000 feet and approximately in 1000 feet. In addition, one ship1 bomb1 were wide an hit something (po11!1ibly an oil storage tank) which explo••d violently( see photo covera e).

a. The route out was approximately a1 briefed, with 94th B flying very close in trail with the 41st. Two boxea of the division lead made a 2nd run and the divilion lead low box also joined this two wing formation. eturn to base was normal.

' 4. Friendly fighter support was excellent. There wa1 a gap prior

to the IP, and several bandits were 1een. They did not attack the 94th B but hit the wing ahead. Flak was encountered only at the target, where it was moderate to intense and very accurate. Wo ahip1 from either 40lst box were lost.

TO Commanding Officer. 40lst Bombardment Group (H).

1. The 40lst Group furnished the low box of the 94th "B" CBV. Group and ing assemblies were very good and ing formation was good throughout the mission. See Wing leaders report for route in and route out.

2. i ing assembly was made quickly and easily after the bomb run. Our bomb run was good and there were no deterrent factors. Bombing results were good. Nonnal withdrawal was made. and all aircraft landed at home base saf'ely.

3. Two aircraft encountered mechanical difficulty, one returned after penetrating enemy territory about 90 miles. The other dropped its bombs on an unknown target of opportunity just North East of Hilsback. Germany. it did n ot pass directly over the target. turningh short to catch the formation upon withdrawal. No other unusual circumstances were ex­perienced.

1. Abortives.

a. Airplane No. •2-398•0 - Returned early because of run away ,-4 prop. The airplane was flying at 15000 feet, engines at 2100 RPM, 34" Hg manifold pressure. To maintain formation it was neces sary to retard the throttles and then suddenly advance them. The prop ran away, so the pilot feathered it. The prop was later unfeathered and maintained a speed of 1000 RPM until the throttles were again advanced and retarded. At that time the prop ran away again and was a.gain feathered.

2. Battle Damage.

a. 42-97344 - Small flak hole in top or right wing, outer pane!; 6• flak hole in bottom of fuselage, near station 3J damaging G-1 oxygen bottle and air pressure line.

b. •2-102581 - Small flak hole through left aileron; Small flak-hole through trailing edge of lett wing inner panel; 2 1 flak hole tnrough right wing inner panel; Small flak hole in lett bomb bay door.

c. •2-97780 ~ Two flak holes in bottom of right wing, inner paneTj' damaging corrugation.

d. 42-107084 - 2" flak hole in I 3 accessory cowling; flak went through and lodged in firewall.

e. 42-31315 - 3" flak rip in I 2 ring cowl; 2° flak hole in bottom ot right wing, behind I 4 nacelle, damaging corrugation.

t. 42-107151 - 5• flak hole in bottom of lett wing, just -outboard of I l nacelle, damaging corrugation; Small flak hole in top of fuselage, forward of pilot's compartment.

a. A/C # 42-3155? - Bomb Bay motor burned out. This ~as due to plug from bomb being left in bomb bay · 1n a way to cause ­a short circuit.

b. A/C # 42-102398 - Bomb bay doors had to be cranked down, cause-unknown. They were closed electrically.

Four ships equipped with all electric bomb release system on to-days mission.
