We know that the Old Canberra Brickworks has a special place in Canberra’s history, defining the look of early homes and public buildings with the iconic ‘Canberra Red’ bricks. The brickworks concluded their operation in the mid-1970s and since then the buildings have been used for a number of different activities.

We are now looking to produce a Planning Strategy for the Old Canberra Brickworks and Environs which will provide a framework for future land use, transport and other infrastructure improvements in the study area.

The study area is an area of local, regional and national significance. Encompassing the Old Canberra Brickworks, the 60-hectare study area forms a major axis with Parliament House, the entryway to Government House, and is adjacent to the Australian Government Mint and residential areas. The study area is also an important gateway to the city from Woden, Tuggeranong, and Molonglo.

The purpose of tonight’s Community Conversation is to:

»» Present findings of initial site investigation to members of the community

»» Gather community input regarding your vision for the site

»» Test and explore design themes with members of the community

»» Consider the nature of appropriate development in the study area.

Welcome and thank you for taking the time to attend the first Community Conversation about the Old Canberra Brickworks and Environs Planning Strategy.
