Highlights of OCRS and Tribal 10th Annual Gathering

Manzano, NM– OCRS and Chihene Nde Nation of NM held its 10th Annual Gathering from June 22-24, 2018, at our tribal OCRS property in the Manzano Land Grant in Torrance County, NM. This was very well attended and very successful. The OCRS paid a local contractor to provide the ground clearing, removal of debris and leveling. The Contractor, Speedy Gonzales (true name-no pun intended) did an excellent job and also provided the portable toilets. He is based out of Punta de Agua, NM. He also donated several cases of water and a 30 x 20 foot large canvass tent for future use. We were able to purchase the poles for the arbor from our neighbor across from us. Mr. Pablo Romero provided us access to these poles. We were able to construct a 10 x 30 arbor in a couple of hours.

Thanks to the Morris family, Miguel Martinez, Gabriel Trujillo, Jerry Guerra, Gilbert Flores, Joe Zamarripa and Larry Jurado for working on this project.

We had our Medicine Man and Warm Springs Crown (Gahe) Dancers conduct the ground blessing ceremony on our property on both Friday and Saturday evenings. This was a beautiful experience for those that engaged and participated in these ceremonies. Several members of our Band participated in singing with the Mescalero brothers that came to participate with us in this special occasion.

We are very thankful to Continuous Pathways for their $2,500 grant that made this activity possible. We will be submitting our final report to them for their sponsorship with photographs as proof of purchases in the near future.

Update on Cochise Stronghold Retreat- August 10-12, 2018

Cochise, AZ– The OCRS had to cancel the activity planned for the Memorial Day Weekend due to serious fire restrictions and conditions that resulted into the US Forest Services to elevate the threat level to a level I, which caused the closure of several federal and state parks. Manzano Mountain State Park was also affected by the Level I Fire Threat Elevation in both Arizona and New Mexico. The US Forest Service was very helpful and desires to work with us. The Cochise Stronghold is closed during the summer and the Forest Service and Park Officials provided us an application to hold our

Event at this Campsite. They will open it up exclusively for our use. We continue to work with the Forest Service on the application as this process is in depth and requires an emergency preparedness plan. The good news is as of July 14, 2018 at 8:00 am, the Level I Fire Threat Elevation Level was lowered to Level III as a result of the monsoons. So we are good to and will continue to work on contingency plans with respect to application. There will a security-reception detail team in place to provide attendees instructions, sign in, and available camp locations for those desiring to camp at site.

There will a logistic and reconnaissance team on site on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 to meet with Forestry Officials and obtain access to Campground. The activities will be Friday and Saturday evenings for our Warm Spring Crown Dancers and Ceremonies. There will be 2 two dinner potlucks on Friday and Saturday evenings. There will be no common kitchen. The Band will provide meals for the Mescalero guests, dancers and singers. For the other meals, folks are on their own. See updated email blasts.

“Friday and Saturday evenings

for our Warm Spring Crown Dancers and

Ceremonies.”

We also encourage our members to support and participate in our NM Land Grant Consejo Quarterly Meeting on September 15, 2018, Mexican Independence Day. This will be near Albuquerque, NM, at the Canyon de Canue Land Grant.

We all can use the help of setting up and cleaning up after the events. We need volunteers with saws, trailers and even heavy machinery to clear debris and help prepare for our retreats and annual gatherings.

Dear Tribal Members:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have made outstanding contributions and assisted in this year’s annual gathering.

This was a very successful gathering. I have made tremendous progress over the last ten years. We thank our Board Members for all of their hard work. We appreciate the work sister Nancy Lopez for her work serving on the Land Grant Consejo and congratulate her for her recent advancement as our Vice Chairman . We hope that you participate in our retreat in August at the Cochise Stronghold.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or wish to volunteer for any activities.

Best regards,

Ojo Caliente Restoration Society (OCRS)

The Ojo Caliente Restoration Society (OCRS) is a New Mexico domestic non-profit and tax exempt organization pursuant to sections 501(C)(3) of the US Revenue Code. We are the fiscal agent for the Chihene Nde Nation of New Mexico. We are descendants of Nde (Apache) people throughout Southern and Central New Mexico. Our ancestors acquired Spanish and Mexican Land Grants known as Apacherias or Rancherias during those occupations. The Chihene Nde Nation was acknowledged and recognized by entering into the Treaty of 1855 by and between the Chihene Nde Nation and the United States which was not ratified by the Congress of the United States. Our families either fled to northern Mexico or were compelled to assimilate into the Hispano or Mexican American communities of the southwest. Many of us possess Spanish surnames and were able blend into those communities. Our ancestors did this to avoid annihilation and forced removal from our indigenous homelands.

Our goal is to gain re-recognition as a federally recognized American Indian Tribe. We are acquiring our land base and economic development plans that will benefit the public.

Many of our families also possessed homesteads and land patents during the beginning of the 20th century. We are also requesting the US Justice Department Community Relations Services to intervene on our behalf in this quest.
