County Seal – History & Background

Ozaukee County, Wisconsin was established in 1853, by the State Legislature. Ozaukee County is Wisconsin’s smallest county geographically, but i t has a rich history. Ozaukee County was home to a number of Native American people such as the Menomonee, Potawatomi, Sauk and Fox. Later, the area became home to many ethnic groups such as Yankees, Irish, German, and Luxembourgers. The last covered bridge in Wisconsin is also located in Ozaukee County. Unti l 2006, many dif ferent logos and seals represented the various Ozaukee County Departments. After years of discussion, drafting, and debate, one single logo was approved by the Ozaukee County Board conveying a common and meaningful symbol that is displayed prominently on all vehicles, stationary, and business cards. The new logo symbolizes the features of Ozaukee County that have attracted its 85,000-plus residents: the County’s unique shape; the vivid blue coloring for our proximity to the great natural resource of Lake Michigan; and the bri l l iant yellow and orange coloring representing the English translation of the Sauk Indian Tribe, ‘Ozaukee, people of the yellow earth’. Also prominent in the newly designed logo is the American flag, fol lowing the United States’ Congress acknowledgment of Ozaukee County as the official birth place of Flag Day and, our historic County Court House, the single most signif icant piece of architecture within our borders.
