First impression is everything This means the very first
correspondence is critical it can make or break your chance to
get that job offer There are a few different ways you can apply
online Generally you will identify a job and within the job de-
scription there will be a contact name and email (ie Please

shannonseaverumbedu) If this is the case then you want
to first create a new email type in the contactlsquos name and in
the subject line type in the exact title of the job youlsquore applying
for You want to make this easy for the reader and if you donlsquot

Alumni at the Career Symposium
On October 18 2011 UMass Boston
alumni with degrees in the liberal arts
will return to campus to share with
students how they shaped their
career paths and ended up in their
current roles The Career Symposi-
um presented by the Office of Career
Services and Internships the Alumni
Office and the College of Liberal Arts
was designed as a way to highlight to
current students the variety of opportunities that are available
with a liberal arts degree
Alumni who are participating in this event stem from an
assortment of career fields including public relations legal
government finance and nonprofit management The
Symposium is organized into two 30-minute round table
discussions and each alumnus will serve as a discussion
leader as they speak with students who are interested in
learning more about their career Students who attend will
have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about
potential careers and hear strategies for finding their ideal
job All students are invited to stay after the round table
discussions and continue their conversations with alumni
during a networking event
The Career Symposium is a valuable opportunity for students
to not only hear how UMass Boston alumni with liberal arts
degrees reached where they are in the workforce but this is

On October 18 2011 UMass Boston
alumni with degrees in the liberal arts
will return to campus to share with
students how they shaped their
career paths and ended up in their
current roles The Career Symposi-
um presented by the Office of Career
Services and Internships the Alumni
Office and the College of Liberal Arts
was designed as a way to highlight to
current students the variety of opportunities that are available
with a liberal arts degree
Alumni who are participating in this event stem from an
assortment of career fields including public relations legal
government finance and nonprofit management The
Symposium is organized into two 30-minute round table
discussions and each alumnus will serve as a discussion
leader as they speak with students who are interested in
learning more about their career Students who attend will
have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about
potential careers and hear strategies for finding their ideal

On October 18 2011 UMass Boston
alumni with degrees in the liberal arts
will return to campus to share with
students how they shaped their
career paths and ended up in their
current roles The Career Symposi-
um presented by the Office of Career
Services and Internships the Alumni
Office and the College of Liberal Arts
was designed as a way to highlight to
current students the variety of opportunities that are available
with a liberal arts degree
Alumni who are participating in this event stem from an
assortment of career fields including public relations legal
government finance and nonprofit management The
Symposium is organized into two 30-minute round table
discussions and each alumnus will serve as a discussion
leader as they speak with students who are interested in
learning more about their career Students who attend will
have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about

Students Connect with Liberal Arts
Alumni at the Career Symposium
On October 18 2011 UMass Boston
alumni with degrees in the liberal arts
will return to campus to share with
students how they shaped their
career paths and ended up in their
current roles The Career Symposi-
um presented by the Office of Career
Services and Internships the Alumni
Office and the College of Liberal Arts
was designed as a way to highlight to
current students the variety of opportunities that are available
with a liberal arts degree
Alumni who are participating in this event stem from an
assortment of career fields including public relations legal
government finance and nonprofit management The
Symposium is organized into two 30-minute round table
discussions and each alumnus will serve as a discussion
leader as they speak with students who are interested in
learning more about their career Students who attend will
have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about
potential careers and hear strategies for finding their ideal
job All students are invited to stay after the round table
discussions and continue their conversations with alumni
during a networking event
The Career Symposium is a valuable opportunity for students
to not only hear how UMass Boston alumni with liberal arts
degrees reached where they are in the workforce but this is
also a great opportunity for students to network and learn
what steps they can take to jumpstart their future careers
One alumnus who will share his experience with students is
David Staples who studied Political Science and minored in
History David is currently serving as a Public Affairs
Specialist in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs with the
United States Department of State Another alumnus who will
speak with students is Lunie Jean-Philippe who studied
Economics and is now a Financial Information Manager at
State Street Global Services In addition Haley Goff who
studied English and is currently working as a Marketing amp
Public Relations Officer at Dellaria will be in attendance
As mentioned previously the Career Symposium is on
Tuesday October 18 2011 from 530pm to 730pm in the
Ryan Lounge located in McCormack Hall All students are

Internship Program Graduate Fellowship Program
Public Policy Fellowship Program and Scholarship
Program are available now The Congressional
Internship Program provides college students with
Congressional work placements on Capitol Hill to
learn first-hand about our nationlsquos legislative
processes The internship is open to applicants
currently enrolled full time working toward their
undergraduate degree The Internship Program
application deadlines are for the Spring 2012
semester November 4 2011 for the Summer
2012 semester February 10 2012 and for the
Fall 2012 semester April 27 2012 The 12 (fall
and spring) and 10 (summer) week paid
internships include housing round-trip
transportation to and from Washington DC and a
stipend of $3750 for semester participants and
$2500 for summer interns
