PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Brodie King is this year’s recipient of the Cronin Award. On Tuesday evening Barry Cronin presented

Brodie with a cheque for $1,000 from our Club. Together with the $1,000 Brodie has already received

from Griffith University, the funds will be used to help the second year engineering student with his

expenses. To quote from our 70th

Anniversary book “Jack Cronin was largely responsible for creating

the Gold Coast that we know today. He joined Southport Rotary in 1949 and was President in 1956-57.”

His wife Joan celebrated her 100th

birthday earlier this year. The Hobart Medical Awards will be

presented on September 22nd

.

Professor Andreas Oechsner is very happy to promote our Satellite Club to his engineering students and

Brodie will become a “Friend of Rotary”. Our relationship with Griffith University is a valued one on

both sides.

Since next Tuesday will not be a time for club announcements here are a few reminders. Rotary

International Director Guiller Tumangan, his wife Lettie and DG Anne Egan will be inspecting the

carousel at 9.00 a.m. on Thursday August 27th

. If you have a Rotary shirt and can make the time, we

would love to see you there for his visit and a photo opportunity.

My first cluster meeting is on Saturday and the third board meeting is on Sunday the 30th

of August.

Directors should have their reports to Andrew Middleton by Monday the 24th

.

We are looking forward to a wonderful 70th

anniversary dinner next Tuesday where former members,

visiting Rotary clubs, members and guests will have the opportunity to renew friendships and make some

new ones. See you then.

Lea Rickwood

Thoughts for the week.

One my father told me -

An old country gentleman sent his son off to engineering school. Four years later, upon his son's

return, he asked him what he had learned at college. The son replied "Pi r square." The dad

exclaimed "You didn't learn nothin boy, pie are round, cornbread's square!"

How many hardware engineers does it take to change a light bulb?

None: you can solve any problem in the software!

Q: Why can't an architect get into Heaven?

A: Because Jesus was a carpenter!

Question: What do engineers use for birth control?

Answer: Their personality

Two engineering students were walking across campus when one said, ”Where did you get such a

great bike?”

The second engineer replied, “Well, I was walking along yesterday minding my own business

when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her

clothes and said, “Take what you want.”

The second engineer nodded approvingly, “Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn’t have fit.”

Three engineering students were gathered together discussing the possible designers of the human

body.

One said, “It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints.”

Another said, “No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of

electrical connections.”

The last said, “Actually it was a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline

through a recreational area?”

I think it was Mark Twain that said, " I would go to heaven for the amenities and to hell for the

people."
