A goal of Allied Jewish Apartments has always been to help residents remain healthy and independent as long as possible, which has been the purpose of our longstanding dinner program, the Wellness Clinic operated by the Dominican Sisters and a Foot Clinic operated by the VNA.We now know that a regular exercise program is as essential to good health as good nutrition and medical care. “Over the last 3 years,” said Connie Moore,AJA’s Director of Activities and Volunteers, “our residents have become more interested in new ways to exercise and stay fit, and so we’ve expanded our offerings.” The fitness program at AJA now includes Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, Fitness Fun (strength training) and Wii Fitness, which includes yoga, aero- bics and balance training. Natalya Bila, 73, a resident of AJA, and a former ballerina with the Odessa Opera Theatre Ballet Company, teaches Posture Perfect, a class that emphasizes exercises to increase flexibility in the feet, knee and hip joints.“The goal of these exercis- es”, explained Bila,“is to help people keep walking in spite of arthri- tis or stiffness.”Bila herself still jogs to keep fit.
