One of my earliest memories of my philosophy studies is the myth of the cave by Plato, a phi-losopher of the 4th C B.C. Plato explained that reality is like a cave in which there are prisoners tied to a rock and facing a wall opposite to the exit. In the cave there is only darkness and shadows from the outside world. The prisoners tied to the rock don’t know there is whole dif-ferent reality out there. One day, someone comes in and tells them to be free and experi-ence the outer world, but they do not want to believe. They are convinced that the world is only shadows on a wall.
Spiritual life is many times like the myth of the cave. Even though Plato meant it in a different way, there are some lessons to draw from it. Living in sin is very similar to living in a cave: We think that the only way to live is according to our sinful ways, and we cant get out of it. Every now and then we hear someone telling us to get out and experience the world, but we don’t want to. We chose to stay tied up to the rock, looking at the shadows on the wall.
On Saturday, October 24, 2015, we had the great honor to receive Bishop Alberto Rojas in our parish who celebrated the sacrament of confirmation for 140 students of our PRAISE pro-gram. I want to note that the sacrament of confirmation is always connected to the gift of truth and understanding. Confirmation is the sacrament through which we learn about the outer world: a world of light and true forms, not of darkness and shadows. Let us sprig up like the man of the gospel this weekend and ask Christ to make us see. Let us give us sacramen-tal gifts and break the chains that tie us up to our own prisons.
Congratulations to the confirmation class of 2014-2015.

Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network
The Catholic Conference of Illinois represents the Catholic Church at the Illinois Capitol, advocates for legislation that respects life and human dignity, the integrity of the family and marriage, and Catholic education and social services.
The CCI has developed and maintains a grassroots email advocacy network called the Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network, or I-CAN for short. The Catholic Conference sends out occasional emails to I-CAN subscribers in an effort to keep lay Catholics informed about state and federal issues that impact the Church and her mission.
Archbishop Cupich recorded a short video promoting I-CAN to encourage Catholics to sign up for the network which is found at https://youtu.be/ruNHMrmH1XE. To join I-CAN or to learn more about the efforts of CCI, please access this link, www.ilcatholic.org/take-action/join-i-can/.
