    CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

    D&J Bultsma Trucking, Platte, SD

Greetings Everyone! It seems like the conven-tion was only a couple weeks ago and here is October. October is truly the end of Summer and the beginning of Fall. October is when we get to enjoy the cool mornings and nights with the warmth during the days. We get to experience the brilliant colors as the leaves change on the trees.

As we started this month of October, we are again reminded how quickly life can change. We are heartbroken at what happened on October 1st in Las Vegas at a country music concert. It was just a year ago that we were at

the ATA Management Conference Exhibition held at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. The world has changed! We might be a little apprehensive about where we travel or what events we attend, but the spirit is that we can’t let this evil overtake our lives. We cannot live in fear. Compassion was evident in this tragedy as good people were willing to help victims who were killed or injured even though they put themselves in danger. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, the people that were injured and those that were attending the concert, as well as the police and the first responders that have to deal with this tragedy. As we witnessed this horrible incident in the United States it reminds us to remember our military personnel that are serving in several countries around the world as well as here in the U.S. We appreciate their sacri-fices to help keep our country safe!

As we hear about the snow that has made an appearance in western South Dakota this last week, it is a good time to make sure that you are ready for the adverse weather conditions that can appear at any time. It’s important to remember to be aware of the road conditions because they can change very quickly. We need to watch our speed and the traffic around us.

We are approaching the deadline for the ELD mandate. In the agriculture trucking industry it is still hard to understand how things are going to work because of the need to provide customer service and meet cus-tomer demands. The public doesn’t recognize that the truck drivers are trying to keep America fed and their shelves stocked.

    [email protected]’S MESSAGE

We had our first taste of fall in Sioux Falls this morning. A hard frost cover was everywhere. There are many other signs that the Fall Season is upon us. Leaves are turning colors and are falling from the trees, a jacket is required when going outside. Golf season will soon be re-placed by hunting seasons. Isn’t it great to live in a state that has 4 distinct seasons?

Another Fall event is the American Trucking Associations annual Management Conference and Exhibition. This annual event is scheduled for October 21 through 24 in sunny Orlando, FL. Your ATA Vice President, Mr. Rick Hoogendoorn and I will soon be heading to that event to dis-cuss the many issues currently facing this industry. I look forward to the meeting discussions and to the conversations with members of the trucking industry from all over this country. No matter where they are from, the issues are very similar.

Another Fall event worth mentioning is the Fall meeting of the SDTA Board of Directors. That meeting is scheduled for November 3rd, at the AmericInn, in Chamberlain. Not only will we be discussing the status and business of your South Dakota Trucking Association, we will also be discussing the many issues that challenge the trucking industry. During this meeting, your Board of Directors also discuss any issues that need the attention of the South Dakota Legisla-ture. Yes, the 2018 Legislative Session is right around the corner! Also keep in mind that every member is invited to attend every board meeting.

On occasion, when I sit down to write my monthly column, I find myself struggling to find trucking industry related subjects that need to be discussed in this column. Well, this month, I feel compelled to close with a quick discussion about the serious tragedies in this country in the recent past. Tragedies like these could affect anyone of us on any given day! Whether it is a hurricane or a mass shooting, we simply do not know what is going to happen and to whom on any individual day.

    Stay safe!

From the desk of Robert Christian

Typically, I find it easy to make myself a pot of coffee, sit down and write my article early on a Sunday morning. By early, I mean log hauler early. I sit here this Sunday morning, reviewing the news and reading a few articles. I find myself a

little less than motivated to continue. So here is my best effort...

After catching up on Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the horrible tragic shootings in Las Vegas, it gets me thinking. Tragedies like these could affect anyone of us on any given day. I am thankful for every day that I don’t have to cope with something like this and all my loved ones are safe. My wife always asks me at the end of the day, as I am sure your spouses do too, “How was your day?” My favorite response to a good day is, “Uneventful, just how I like it!”

Senator John Thune is a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. He recently met with the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works to discuss his Forest Management Improvement Act of 2017. This legislation would make improvements to the forestry title of the farm bill by increasing the effec-tiveness of the Healthy Forest Restoration Act and improving the National Environmen-tal Policy Act. These changes would help simplify and improve federal forest manage-ment. Here are a couple of facts showing a need for these legislative changes:

    • Since January 2017 we have watched 49,000 fires burn over 8.4 million acres of forest land.

    • Since 2000, wildfires have burnt on an average of 6.9 million acres per year.

    • Fire suppression costs have grown from 16 percent of the Forest Service annual budget in 1995 to 52 percent of the Forest Service budget in 2015.

There are some good and much needed improvements in this legislation that will allow proper management of forest service land to make them more resilient and better able to withstand fires, pest and diseases.

Enjoy the Fall weather. Winter will be here before we know it.

  • Thanksgiving, Time to Talk TurkeyBy Gretchen Spars, Sanford Health ethicist

The holidays are the perfect time to sit down and talk turkey. This doesn’t mean discussing football, shop-ping or preparations for the big meal. Rather, with family members already congregated, it’s an ideal time to have thoughtful conversations about everyone’s personal health care preferences. It will benefit everyone to consider and share their medical wishes and preferences while they can, regardless of their age.

Talking to loved ones about advance health care planning can be uncomfortable, but critical decision-mak-ing moments are often made all the more difficult when loved ones are forced to guess about critical care preferences or end-of-life goals. When a sudden medical event or accident occurs that prevents someone from participating in their own medical care, family members will want to be informed decision-makers.

When talking with loved ones about advance care planning, start by asking open-ended questions. Exam-ples include:• What concerns you most if you were unable to make your own medical decisions?• What are your hopes and fears regarding your health care?• Who would you trust to make decisions or speak for you, if you were unable to do so? Have you talked to

them about what you would want?• What are the best and worst care scenarios that could happen?• What options do you believe you have?• What can you share with me about your end-of-life wishes that is most important to you and would

bring you comfort?• What does a good day look like to you?• What can I do to support you?• If you were diagnosed with a life-limiting illness or involved in a major accident, what kinds of medical

    treatment would you want?

Most people have some idea of which medical interventions they feel are suitable for their personal care, but these wishes are often never communicated. An advance directive tells the family and physician what a patient would want if they’re badly hurt or have a serious illness that keeps them from saying so. This legal document appoints a health care agent and states desires about quality of life, medical treatment, attempts to restart your heart and breathing, artificial feeding or being put on a ventilator. A health care agent should have a calm disposition, understand the person’s medical preferences and be able to advo-cate for them. As long as a patient can still make his or her own decisions, the advance directive won't be used. The patient can stop or say no to treatment at any time.

In the face of illness, a person can also consider shared decision-making, which allows for collaboration with a health care provider regarding treatments, interventions and end-of-life decisions, but still upholds a patient’s right to make his or her own decisions.

It’s natural to want to put off thoughts of crisis and death, but it’s important to share and discuss about certain health care desires while everyone is able to. This November, encourage family and friends to share about their personal medical preferences. Open discussions will allow everyone to be aware and respectful of each other’s wishes.
