From our Therapist, Linda Miller I came to Lifehouse in June of 2016. As a Licensed Mar-riage and Family Therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker I have worked in many arenas. I have worked with children, couples, families, and individuals. I was anxious and excited to apply some of the skills I learned over the years to working with this wonderful team to help these women develop their highest potential. As I began work-ing here I heard the stories of these residents. Each one unique, with its own challenges and history. Many of the residents past and present have been through multiple traumas. Joan Smith, the executive director, continues to say “Pregnancy is not the problem”. What happens in this process of filling our house? First we get a call or email from a woman who has an unplanned pregnancy. These calls/emails come from Pregnancy Cen-ters around the state, family or friends who are concerned, or the woman herself. When the call comes in we listen for the woman’s fears, her strengths, her desires, and her needs. We talk about where she is, how she sees her fu-ture, what she wants from Lifehouse. We describe our pro-gram and mission statement. We tell them that Lifehouse is a Christian based organization that is concerned with every aspect of a person’s life: Physical, Spiritual, Intel-lectual and Emotional. We offer supportive conversation, we offer prayer, and we invite her to ask questions. De-pending on her need and her story we may invite her for an interview. We will do an assessment, gather psychoso-

cial, family history, and other information that will help us make a good decision about her needs. Once a new resident is invited to move in, we make the appropriate arrangements. Then the work begins. Resi-dents are encouraged to meet with me once a week to work on goals, decisions about her baby, and other factors that influence her choices. As the resident feels more safe and comfortable she may explore the experiences in her life more in depth. As a therapist I listen, respond with empathy, and help her reflect and develop healthy coping skills. We provide a safe, confidential, welcoming envi-ronment to allow her to talk about what happened to her and learn new skills to help her move through the experi-ence and build a safe, secure future for herself. When something like anxiety or trauma, or depression influences a person it can demand time and energy. It can prevent her from seeing the potential to resolve the problem. We work on coping skills that help her take back her life from the influence of these problems. We talk about options she might utilize. We practice the skills. We invite those who care for this woman to come and share and learn. We want to help build supportive healthy relationships. My goals for each resident are to awaken her to her own worth and to allow her to have a voice of her own that is meaningful and healthy. I want her to hold herself ac-countable, and to learn to make healthy choices about her life and the life of her unborn child.

Our Newest Lifehouse Resident, Caleb

As the Founder of Lifehouse, I find myself faced with

challenges that I never would have thought I would face in life. From day one I have remained faithful to main-

taining a holistic program that addresses the--SPIRITUAL, PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL AND INTEL-

LECTUAL needs of every woman we serve.

Recently we received notice from Dare to Care that they will no longer give food to Lifehouse because we

make church attendance mandatory for our residents. I was told that this is in direct conflict with their contract

with "Feeding America".

To date we have fed, clothed, educated, housed and blessed mothers who have birthed a total of 63 healthy babies. These babies were healthy because their moth-ers were healthy and were able to give life to their child and make a healthy plan for the future, be it parenting or adoption. At Lifehouse we will not take away one part of our holistic program for anything because we

know that God will provide.

We hope that our affiliation with Dare to Care can be renewed, but if not, we will rely on the generous support of churches and individual donors who share our belief that it is necessary to feed the soul, as well as the body. Our bodies will die, but we live in faith that our souls will

live forever with God our Creator in heaven.

Move In Day! Several of our residents have

recently moved into our

transitional apartments. This is

a big step for them and exciting

to watch them grow as they

work toward independence!
