World CommunionSunday

Pando is a 47,000 tree groveof aspens in Fish Lake, Utah. Theinteresting thing about thesetrees is that they are geneticallyidentical. They all haveidentifying marks on them, andthe black spots remind us thatthey are different in appearance, yet these are the same tree. Somehave called Pando “TheTrembling Giant.” Othersrecognize it as the largest livingmass on earth, weighing in at awhopping 6,000,000 kilos. Ihope to visit this fall and see thetremendous display of quakingyellow leaves.

The current populationestimates for the number ofChristians in our world (2011)are 2.18 billion, or over onethird of the earth’s population. There are over 30,000 groupsexpressed in this population, with 1,200 denominations inthe United States alone. Themajority of Christians used to befrom Europe and the Americas, but that is shifting, and themajority within 30 years will bein Asia and Africa. We knowthey all have the same roots,

but could we be like thosetrees in Utah?

This Oct. 4 is WorldCommunion Sunday, a Sundaythat is set aside to remember thecommunion feast worldwide.Different churches throughoutthe world lift the bread and cuptogether in a great sign ofsolidarity. For the earlyChristians, this was a solemnoath to their Master of fidelityand commitment to the greatcommand to love one another. They called it the “Agape Feast”(meaning feast of unconditionallove), the Lord’s Supper andCommunion. In the NewTestament, it is said that thosewho eat the bread and drink thecup are one body.

Like the trees of Pando,Christians look different, andthis difference makes usapprehensive, especially with30,000 groups. Still, the ferventprayer of the Lord is, “that theymay be one” (John 17:21ff.). Iwonder if this can happen, evenif just for a moment, on thefourth day of October? There areforces in this world that teach usto concentrate on differencesrather than what we have incommon. This bread and cupteach us to realize we are justone of 2.2 billion Christians onthe planet, and that we all needto look for ways to see the faithwe share, so that we can cometogether and enjoy His greatlove.

Have a great autumn!Chaplain Brad

Meet Your Neighbor(Cont. From Page 1)

Once a summer, Bobbie andher brother would go to Elitchesor Lakeside Amusement Parkwith their parents. They wouldgo on rides and picnic at thepavilion. 10 days aftergraduating East High School,Bobbie married her high schoolsweetheart, Lanny, and over thenext nine years, she was ahomemaker and was blessedwith three children, Deborah,Darrin and Dena. Unfortunately, the marriage didn’t last, andBobbie and her three childrenmoved to Grand Junction, CO,to be close to her parents.

While attending a “fireman’sball,” Bobbie met her futurehusband, Fred, who was a cityfireman for Grand Junction.Seven months later, she marriedFred and continued to be ahomemaker, spending timecanning, gardening, sewing, choir, church, P.T.A. and raisingthe children, who had grownwith the addition of Fred’s boy,Kirk, from his first marriage andthe birth of their child, Susan.

Fred and Bobbie spent manyhappy years visiting differentplaces around them. They wentrock hunting, looked formushrooms and fished onGrand Mesa. Sadly, the marriageended, and Bobbie went to workfor JCPenney, first as a salesclerk and then as an assistantbuyer. She also worked for adoctor as his business manager.

Music has been a veryimportant part of Bobbie’s life. From an early age, she would sitwith her mother at the uprightpiano. Her mother would playand Bobbie would sing all thenew tunes of the day or that theywould hear at the movies. Musiccarried on into junior high andhigh school, singing in thevarious choirs that wereavailable to her. Bobbie alsodirected choir in variouschurches. She joined the62-women chorus of SweetAdeline in 2000. What fun shehad entertaining people in theconvention center, hotels as wellas on the stage.

After her failing health, shesold her home and moved to aretirement center in GrandJunction for two years. She isnow very happy living atFellowship Square since Januaryof this year, and enjoys beingnear her daughter, Susan, andher husband, Jeff, and grandson,Matt. Oh, by the way, she has 10grandchildren and 17great-grandchildren. She says,“I’m very blessed!”
