Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Members and Friends of the Hill
United Presbyterian Church:
As we approach the time when we turn
to reflect on our commitment to giving in
our lives as followers of Jesus Christ, our
theme for this year into 2016 is “Spiritual
Growth Through Generous Giving: Hill
Church: Changing Lives For Jesus
Christ.”.
St. Paul, in his Second Letter to the
Corinthians wrote, “You will be enriched
in every way for great generosity to
God...and for all others.” (2 Corinthians 9:
11 and 13).
Think of just how generous God is with
us through our Savior and Lord Jesus
Christ.
The meaning of the word “generous”
means “willing to give or share; to be
unselfish and bountiful”.
In this month, as we speak of following
Jesus Christ, I will speak of the generosity
of time, the generosity of talent, and the
generosity of money for the Kingdom of
God.
Yours in the generosity of the Faith,
Hope, and Love of Jesus Christ,
Pastor Clark
Rev. Clark T. Sawyer
In Psalm 149: 1, the Psalmist writes, “Praise
the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, His
praise in the assembly of the faithful.”.
That is what our times of worship are: “the
assembly of the faithful “to Praise the Lord!”.
You are invited to this “assembly” every
Lord’s Day to rejoice in the Lord.
Please come and bring others to our
gatherings for worship, study, fellowship,
service and outreach.
See you at the “assembly”!

The next newsletter deadline is
OCTOBER 15, 2015!
Every year Hill Church is asked to support the work of the Beaver-Butler Presbytery, the
Synod of the Trinity and the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA. This
support is made through a per-capita assessment of church members. This assessment has
been used for over 150 years to fund the essential work of the Presbyterian Church.
As we have done in past years, we are inviting members to the Hill Church family of faith to contribute to
the support of the shared work of the Presbyterian Church USA. The per-capita assessment for 2015 is
$39.93 per member which includes all those who have been baptized and have made their profession of
faith. For example, a single member would contribute $39.93, a couple who are both members would
contribute $79.86, a couple with one confirmed child would contribute $119.79 and so on.
For your convenience in making this offering, a special blue envelope has been included in your regular box
of envelopes, appearing between the January 25th and the February 1st envelopes. Or you may mark the
memo line of your check “per-capita” and this offering will be properly credited to your giving statement.
As of 9/25/15 we have collected $4,272.92. Thank you for your continued generosity and support.

SOUTHEAST ASIA COMES ALIVE AT HILL CHURCH-BUT PERHAPS NEVER AGAIN
On September 9th, Barry and Shelly Dawson showed pictures and spoke to a group of Beaver-
Butler pastors and interested members of Hill Church. There was a wonderful time of hospitality
and good food (thanks to Sharon Montag and the Deacons). Afterwards, Barry and Shelly spoke
of their work in Southeast Asia as Mission Co-workers and liaisons of the PC(USA). In working
with these partner churches and just like other areas of the world, the Dawsons are challenged to
provide quality education, to train leaders for community transformation, and to end violence
against women and children. The Dawsons and several others serve in nine countries in
Southeast Asia. Because of sensitivity in the political arena, some countries and work could not
be talked about, nor pictures shown. Persecution is rampant. We in the USA are very fortunate
to have the liberties we often take for granted.
The Dawsons have been in the USA for three months and in that time have been responsible for fund raising for
their position (along with the added costs of travel). This is true of all Mission Co-Workers. Because of a lack of
funding, some of their co-workers have been returned to the states. The Dawsons are currently underfunded and
this situation also puts their position at risk. During this time in the USA, besides attending some required
conferences, Barry and Shelly visited 45 churches in seven Presbyteries, and 23 states. They were road weary,
but still excited about their calling.
Matthew 28:19 says, ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’
You are urged to pray daily for Barry and Shelly, to support them financially, and to mention their special work
to your friends in other Presbyterian churches in hopes that congregation would also build a relationship with
Barry and Shelly. Their called work is in Southeast Asia, not fund raising in the states.

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT
MISSION MONEY ARRIVES IN GHANA On September 8th, Bernard Daddy, Chairperson of the Bubiashie District Scholarship Committee, notified us that
$6500 had been deposited to the scholarship account in ecobank in Accra. Thanks to Lyn Goehring for making this
transaction. A very special thanks to all who contributed to the scholarship fund in the past year. We pray that many
young women will be able to fulfill their dream of a high school or college education.
GHANIAIAN SEMINARY STUDENT TO PREACH AT HILL CHURCH Ben Nti, a student at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary will be preaching on October 25th. Ben is a Ghanaian who is
living on campus with his wife and a young son. We had asked Jen Haddox of World Mission Initiative if there were
any Ghanaians at the seminary and she put us in contact with Ben. Our task Force has already met Ben and we are
excited that he will be preaching on October 25th. Please come and hear and support your Task Force.
TASK FORCE IS VISITING VARIOUS GROUPS IN HILL CHURCH In an attempt to be more personal in our efforts to raise scholarship funds, we are visiting various groups. We will be
bringing the photo album and you will be able to see in more detail who some of the students are and the beautiful
dresses they are wearing. We hope to answer your questions.
PRAYER CONCERNS CONTINUE Please continue to keep the Bubiashie District churches, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of the Bubiashie Scholarship
Committee, as well as the students, and Joshua Heikkila, the West Africa Liaison for the PC(USA), in your prayers. James Ihlenfeld for the Ghana Mission Task Force

“You will be enriched in every way for great generosity… to God…and for all others.” 2 Corinthians 9:11&13
As someone who attends Hill Church you know the importance of the work that is accomplished through
our ministries and programs. In 2016 Hill Church will focus on how we, as a church, can change lives for
Jesus Christ. The lives we change may be people who are already members of our Hill Church family of
faith. Or they may be the lives of our neighbors, people who live half way across the country or people
who live half way around the world.
These are just some of the ways that Hill Church is Changing Lives for Jesus Christ.
As we approach 2016 we are asking you to prayerfully consider how you can support the ministries and
programs of Hill Church. If you pledge we encourage you to continue. If you do not currently pledge, we
invite you to try it. If you have pledged in the past but stopped, we invite you to begin pledging again.
Please understand that pledging isn’t about who or what you like or dislike at Hill Church. It is about
how you want to express your love for God by supporting the work of His church. Your pledge, no
matter what its size, is a way that you can help change lives for Jesus Christ. It is that simple and that
powerful.
You will soon be receiving information in the mail about the 2016 Hill Church Stewardship Campaign. If
you would like to support the work of Hill Church through pledging, please complete the pledge card and
return it to the church office no later than Wednesday, October 28, 2015. We will consecrate our pledges
to and for the glory of God on Sunday, November 1st.
Thank you for praying about and considering pledging as a way to experience greater spiritual growth
through generous giving. No matter what you decide we are grateful to God that you are a member of our
family of faith and we look forward to joining you in the many ministries and programs offered at Hill
Church.

Update from the Forward in Faith Task Force
Focus Group – Sunday, October 18, 2015 Ken Hall Memorial Lounge – 10 Minutes after the end of Sunday Worship – Topic – Missions
The Forward in Faith Task Force continues to review the data collected from the Congregational Survey. Reviewing the data is more than just reading answers to the survey questions. It is about looking for common areas of concern among respondents. So far, some of these common areas of concern include, but are not limited to:
1. The limited accessibility of our building for those who are having increased difficulty using the stairs;
2. Lack of understanding about the mission projects currently supported by Hill Church;
3. The need for additional and/or different opportunities for Christian education and the study of Scripture among all age groups within the congregation;
4. The need for a new and improved youth program that will keep our youth and their families from leaving Hill Church for youth programs offered by other area churches;
5. Ideas to improve the timing, flow and spirituality of our Sunday morning worship service.
The Task Force has decided to schedule its first Focus Group around the mission projects currently supported by Hill Church. This focus group is not going to be a mission fair. It is going to be an opportunity for members of our congregation to talk about how we can evaluate our current mission projects, how we can improve awareness among the congregation about the mission projects we support and what, if any, additional mission projects Hill Church should support. We won’t come out of this Focus Group with all the answers. In fact we may end up with more questions than answers. But what will come out of this Focus Group is the start of a plan for Hill Church to improve its mission response at a time when our church, our community, our country and the world need it the most. If you have a heart for mission, this is definitely a Focus Group you will want to attend. The Forward in Faith Task Force will prepare a summary report of the data and the common concerns raised by those responding to the survey. This report should be ready by November, or hopefully, sooner. The report will be presented to the Session. Many people from the congregation have voiced concerns as to why this process is taking so long. It is taking so long because the Forward in Faith Task Force members are deeply committed to making sure we prepare a report that is a complete and accurate summary of the hopes, dreams and concerns expressed by those who completed and submitted a survey. Our task force members are also actively involved in many other church committees and activities. Please be patient with us. We are doing our best. You can continue to share your opinions or concerns with any of the Forward in Faith Task Force members. Those members include: Laraine McCrea, Pat Brennen, Lauren McElhaney, Barb Graham, Peg Dumbaugh, Patti Donaldson, Cathy Zarnick, Anne Miller, Louise Evans and the Rev. Clark Sawyer. We welcome your input and value your insight.
Session Highlights September 14, 2015
The Session affirmed motions with regret and love to accept three motions affecting staff: To accept a motion to dissolve the Pastoral Relationship between the Rev. Clark Sawyer and the Hill U.P. Church effective December 31, 2015, upon his desire to retire from fulltime ministry, with a Congregational meeting to be held at 11:35 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2015; To accept a motion for resignation from Kathy Sawyer as Director of Program and Music Ministries effective December 31, 2015; To accept a motion for resignation from Peg McGuirk as Organist effective December 31, 2015. Rev. Alan Adams, Executive Presbyter of Beaver-Butler Presbytery and Rev. Jeff Curtis, Committee on Ministry from the Presbytery met with the Session to discuss “steps in the process” to move toward new Pastoral Leadership. A motion from Administration was approved: That payment of $787.50 be remitted to Standard Insulation for additional work they completed during the Stained Glass renovation project. Three motions from Stewardship and Mission Support were approved: To accept a bequest in the amount of $12,671.94 from the estate of Frank W. Badger in memory of the Howard W. and Lois Gould Badger Family. To create an investment account in New Covenant Funds for the Frank W. Badger bequest. To restrict the use of the $28,000 contribution made by the children of Dr. and Mrs. Robert E. McKee as follows: $4,000 to be used as an initial contribution to Phase II of the stained glass window fund, and $24,000 to be taken in four installments of $6,000 per year for deposit into the general fund to cover budgeted expenses.

ATTENTION: All over 18 who love and work with children
As you may know, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has changed its
requirements for who needs to obtain background checks and clearances when
working with children under 18. In the past, only paid staff and teachers working
with children needed checks and clearances. But now anyone - paid or volunteer
- who has direct teaching or caring contact with children under 18 MUST receive
the appropriate checks and clearances.
What does this mean for you? If you are involved in a ministry of teaching, care
for, or have adult responsibilities for children under 18, you must get the
following checks and clearances.
If you are over 18 and serve in a ministry as a volunteer that has any direct
contact with children, you must obtain:
1. The PA State Criminal History Report
2. The PA Child Abuse History
3. Provide Hill Church either a notarized affidavit stating that you
have lived in Pennsylvania for the last ten years or an FBI Criminal
History Report if you have lived in the PA for less than 10 years.
There is no cost for the clearances except for a notary fee for the affidavit or a fee
for the FBI Clearance.
Information packets and forms can be obtained from the church office or use the
forms attached to the August newsletter.
It is essential that anyone who needs to complete the clearance forms do so
immediately. There is bound to be a backlog at the state level to get approvals.
Please return all completed forms to the church office for mailing.
If you have not done your clearances yet, please turn them in as soon as
possible! If you already have clearances from a place of employment, please
bring a copy to the church for our files.
