1 Amador County Arsts Associaon Note From the Editor Open Studios is like Thanksgiving dinner, there is so much time spent in preparation and then zap, it is devoured. Preparation for Open Studios takes almost a full year and in two short days it is over, consumed by the visitors. I hope, if you were not participating, you had a chance to see our local artists. There are highly disciplined and educated artists with phenome- nal talent, and some passionate and untrained artists with phenomenal talent. No matter what the recipe, everyone brings something to the table that is not possible to experience except through the artist. Special thanks go out to Marie Mort and all those on the committee who put endless hours and energy into making this event possible. To those who donated their work for the scholarship raffle, and to the businesses that donated money, or other gifts as a sponsor, the entire community thanks you. If you know anyone who would like an opportunity to become a member with more recognition for their artwork, let them know they can have an ACAA web site member page through October. That benefit would nor- mally cost much more than the ACAA membership fee. If you are al- ready a member and do not yet have your page, let’s work on it! ROBERT W. RICHARDS

Hanford St. Gallery is pleased to pre-sent a retrospective look at the art of Amador County native son Robert Richards. A fourth generation native of Sutter Creek, Bob graduated from Amador High, attended U.C. Berkley, and took his B.A at San Jose State. He later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at the California College of Arts and Crafts-Oakland. Robert served as a teacher, a writer, and a historian, but first and foremost he was an artist, always looking at the world through a creative and imaginative lens. From his first sketch as a child to his last published work the breadth of his work in every medium is amazing. The paintings, sculptures, drawings, murals, linoleum prints and books are a true representation of his life and his love of the Sierra foothills. Robert's first teaching position was in Germany. From there he was able to travel throughout Europe and the Middle East, always with sketch book and watercolors in hand. Through his drawings, and influenced by the work of Van Gogh, he was able to capture the feel of the old cities of Germany and France. Robert ventured on to find an old friend at St Ives in England. There he studied ceramics at the Leach Pottery Studio, founded by the renowned Bernard Leach. Robert's love affair with clay lasted throughout his life and took many twists, turns and forms. Starting with functional ceramics he later moved to sculpture. At U.C. Davis he became closely associated with and influenced by the works of Robert Arneson, William Wiley and Wayne Theibaud. The "Funk Art " movement had begun and Robert was one of its most enthusiastic proponents. He embraced the use of ceramics as a fine art sculp-tural medium and enjoyed the metamorphic transition from a craft to works that aspired to fine art. Funk Art, at that time, also became known as a bit of a rebellion against the seriousness and moral posturing of the avant-garde. Robert, throughout the years, showed in many galleries both in the United States and England. He taught in numerous colleges and universities as well as in secondary and primary schools. He owned and operated an art gallery in Sonoma before retiring to his home town of Sutter Creek in 1997 and here, together with his wife, Jill Kelley, he started "Hilda's Artworks." Robert returned his focus to drawing and paint-ing incorporating the humor and color of his pre-vious Funk Art works. Robert wrote books re-telling the stories he had heard from his youth. He captured the history of Amador County through his murals and continued ex-ploring the back roads drawing and painting ghost towns and old mines. Robert passed away at the age of 73 in Decem-ber of 2010, following a two-year battle with cancer. This show offers an in depth celebra-tion of the life and work of this much loved local artist. The exhibit will run from October 4 through October 28.

HANFORD ST. GALLERY

The Sierra Sax and Brass Quartet will be playing at the Hanford St. Gal-lery in Sutter Creek from 4pm to 7pm on Saturday, October 6 for the open-ing of the Robert Richards Retro-spective. Barry Duncan, Hank King, Jeff Chambers and Steve Chambers will highlight the festivities with music from the '20's right through to the 2000's.

Great music, wine and art will make this an evening to remember. Don't miss this opportunity to see the full range of creativity of the late Robert Richards -Amador County native son, sketch artist, illustrator, potter, ceramic sculptor, print maker, muralist, painter, author, teacher and Mother-Lode historian.

FROM LESLIE AND DAVID SCHUPP We would like to thank Marie Mort and the Open Studio group with all the work they did for the tour. For our first year in the tour we believe we did well. We sold 7 photos, something we could not have done without the tour.

Thank you again.

Sabina Turner to be Highlighted at Gallery 10 through October

Sabina has been an artist since childhood. She began studying at the Chicago Art Institute at the age of eight. Her family has always encour-aged her efforts. Her great grandfather was a noted sculptor in Germa-ny, and both her parents were interested in the arts. “Being an artist is not something I do. It is what I am.” She has had the fortune to study with some of the great masters of watercolor, and still attends work-shops with many of the noted painters of today. To her, art’s value is in connecting with others. Working both in oil and watercolor, Sabina shares both with those who view her paintings and

those who want to learn to be artists. “Art’s value is in the sharing, shared emotion, shared vi-sion, shared understanding and knowledge. Hoping that by doing so we can open another’s eyes to our soul.” Her favorite subjects are people. She is drawn to the infinite ways in which they express their persona. “By incorpo-rating their expression into mine it adds another layer to my work. I love bright colors, movement and detail.” She has been painting a series of local Native Americans. Attending Pow Wows and becoming friends with them, she tries to capture their transition from a native culture to our modern one. “This generation has been born and raised in our current lifestyle, and they are incorporating that into their traditions. They might work at a local insur-ance agency, hospital or in the computer industry. Many of them are highly educated and are contributing members of our society. Then they gather with other Native Americans and celebrate both who they are and who they were.” Sabina has been honored with many awards both nationally and internationally. Recently she has had a painting included in the Oil Painters of America National Exhibit in Evergreen Colora-do. One of her paintings just finished touring museums and civic galleries nationwide with the National Watercolor Societies’ traveling exhibit. She is a Signature Member of the National Wa-tercolor Society and Watercolor West. She is also a member of Amador County Artists Associa-tion, American Watercolor Society, California Art Club, and Oil Painters of America. Her work can be seen at Gallery 10 in Sutter Creek California, or at her studio in Fiddletown, CA. Join with Gallery 10 in celebrating Sabina's art at a reception to be held in her honor on Saturday, October 6 from 2 to 4 pm. The gallery is located at 15 Eureka Street in Sutter Creek. Gallery hours are Thr-Mon from 11-5pm. For further information call 209-267-0203 or check their website at www.gallery10suttercreek.com.
