Everything seems to progressing nicely and we do have the Senior center this year for our artists to be as well as their homes, and Rollingwood. The Senior center has a lot of people there for Bingo as well as being an easy to find spot on the mainstream---with parking. The team is on the run. The one concern at this time is as of last meeting we were way short on artists. Get signed up or let your friends know the deadline is the end of the month. Thanks much for all your support. Motoshi Kosako Jazz Harpist

Petroglyphe Gallery welcomes back for the third concert series, Motoshi Kosako. With the release of his 4th CD following a tour in Brazil, he will be sharing some of his new pieces he has performed! Mr. Kosako was born in Matsuyama City, Japan. He started his musical training on the piano and also the guitar. In Tokyo he played the acoustic and electric guitar in profes-sional Jazz bands and the Swing Journal magazine described him as “one of the most remarkable young Jazz musicians.” In 1997, Mr. Kosako moved to the United States and soon after he started playing the harp. He is primarily self-taught with a few lessons from Dominique Piana (the professor of Holly Name College, Oakland, CA) to learn fundamental harp technique. He was the principal harpist of Stockton Symphony Orchestra and the featured soloist for 2009-2010 season. His latest music innovation is improvisation and composition for the harp. In 2007 he won the second place in Lyon & Healy International Jazz & Pop Harp Competition and received the “Best of Sacramento” award from Sacramento Magazine as “Best Jazz Hound in Tie and Tail”. Sacramento Magazine says, “Kosako plays with fluid, modern style that evokes Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea.” His groundbreaking style is also noted in Harp Column as “Motoshi Kosako, a Japanese native whose introspective soloing was reminiscent of Keith Jarrett.” He plays numerous original compositions and standards as solo or in trio and quartet. Since 2008 he started touring Japan to give performances and various workshops and he is considered as the most influential Jazz harp-ist in Japan. In 2002 and 2003, he recorded two classical harp albums, Celestial Harp I and Celestial Harp II. In April 2008, he has released his first Jazz Album, Naked Wonder with his trio, Bill Douglass (bass, bamboo flute) and Daryl Van Druff (drums). In 2010 he has released his solo album “Living harp” in Japan and producing new album “ Place in the heart” with Grammy ward winning musician, Paul McCandless (oboe, English horn, soprano sax, bass clarinet) and made their record debut in Japan distributed by KING RECORDS INTERNATIONAL. Petroglyphe Gallery is excited to feature such a talented and visionary musical artist!

New Class Added Lynn Slade's Valuable Values Workshop June 20, 21 and 22 9 AM to 4 PM daily Held in the studio in Pioneer

Interesting value shapes in a painting are more important to the success of the painting than the color itself. Seeing these abstract values in your subject matter is one of the first and most difficult things for an artist to understand. In this fun and challenging workshop, you’ll discover the power of these valuable values, how to find them in your subject matter and connect them with transitional passages. In addition, you’ll learn about the concept of 80/20 in a composition; how to find and make a focal point stand out and direct the viewer’s eye to it. Understanding these design concepts can help make your paintings both stronger and more dramatic. In this hands-on workshop you will explore collage techniques using a variety of rice papers. Combining color and texture, you will work toward creating a one-of-a-kind finished piece. $140.

For further information or to register for the class, contact Lynn at 209-295-4667 or [email protected] Check on lsladeart.com for other upcoming classes like the super fun Textures Multiplied on July 14 thru 18.
