been firmly built over the past 30 years or so.
Sure to continue to bring great programs, services, and resources to the
community and artists is the incoming slate. Those included to give the
same high caliber contribution this coming year are: President Judy
Day, Vice President Donna Plant, Recording Secretary Em Rojas,
Treasurer Laureen Shimmon, Corresponding Secretary Judy Jackson
and board members: Curtis Stromm, Marie Mort, Dorothy Magoffin and Catherine Woodruff.

ACAA MEMBER ANNIE HUGHES HONORED
The 25th Annual Awards Ceremony, celebrating 25 years
"Action on Behalf of Children" was held at University Plaza Waterfront Hotel in Stockton and sponsored by Family Resource & Referal Center. They were honoring 8 recipients in San
Joaquin County who contribute tirelessly to the welfare of the
children of San Joaquin County.
The award in the Child Advocate category was the honor Annie Hughes received.
"Annie has used her skills as a teacher and artist to enrich children's lives. She expands their experi-ences by taking children from their neighborhood to her home/studio to try painting, drawing, dancing, or trying musical instruments. She has taken children to the Haggin Museum for Family Art Day, to the circus and the symphony with the help of a few volunteers. Annie finances it with proceeds from her art sales, garage sales, and volunteer donations. The group started calling themselves The Pixie12 five years ago and Annie has decided to make her endeavor a non-profit called The Pixie12 Arts Foundation. Aside from her local advocacy, almost yearly, Annie returns to Laos, where she taught
English and painted with children at an orphanage for two years. With her she brings art supplies and
books to the orphanage to "Build a Bridge to Laos".
CONGRATULATIONS ANNIE FOR YOUR INCREDIBLE WORK OF HEART!

GALLERY 10 FEATURES ARTIST HOWARD REES IN DECEMBER
"I feel that as an artist evolves, he or she always wants to do more, or say more with their artwork." Recently
Howard has been going in two different directions. He works to keep his plein art paints loose and sketchy
by striving to use less, but more expressive brush strokes. As most of his students will tell you he is always
harping about "over painting". The idea is to get more character into each stroke by using the "look twice and
paint once" philosophy. If this is done effectively, "it usually produces a more spontaneous piece."
With his current studio work he is aiming for more "finished: looking paintings. This, he achieves by adding
more detail. There is a fine balance here as he does not want to over work everything and have the piece
appear stiff. Like everything in life, balance is the key.
Howard loves painting and working with other artists. "I am very fortunate to have had this wonderful career.
To be able to make a living at what I love and have a passion for, as the saying goes, 'Its as good as it gets'".
Howard claims that he was born with a paint brush in his hand. To this day his favorite place to be is at the
end of that brush, whether it be in his studio in the California Gold Country or capturing a scene in a Europe-
an village. Howard's lifelong interest in art led him to the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, where
he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1964. Today he paints with proficiency in both watercolor and
oil and loves the unique challenges each medium presents.
He conducts fun-filled, informative workshops in his studio and "Plein Air" classes throughout the United
States and Europe. In addition to his workshops Howard has produced three instructional videos on paint-
ing with watercolors, oils and painting from photographs which will be available at the show.
Howard and his wife, Janey, reside in Jackson and will be hosted at a reception in his honor on Saturday,
December 1 from 2 to 4 pm at Gallery 10 located at 15 Eureka Street, Sutter Creek. The gallery is open
Thursdays through Monday from 11 to 5 pm. For more information call the gallery at 209-267-0203 or
check their website at gallery10suttercreek.com.
