October 2012 Dear Parents and Students, For the development of our school community in its Salesian mission and identity, we are guided in these years by 4 pastoral goals. These 4 goals were chosen in 2010 after an extensive consultation among both adults and students. In this and subsequent letters, I wish to reflect with you on these goals, for the more we all have the same aims in mind, the more we will strengthen as a school community. Let’s begin with the first goal.

We are a Catholic school. The person of Jesus Christ, his teaching and way of life, are central to our identity. We are a part of the worldwide faith community that seeks to welcome and advance in human his-tory the Kingdom that Jesus announced and inaugurated – that is, we are a part of the Catholic Church. We are a Salesian school. The person of Saint John Bosco, his approach to young people and way of education, are likewise central to our identity. We are a part of the worldwide movement that seeks to edu-cate through love and to form the young into honest citizens and good Christians – that is, we are a part of the Salesian Family. If either of these identities weakens, the less significant Don Bosco Prep becomes. When either of these identities strengthens, the more significant Don Bosco Prep becomes. Each of our school departments met in August and September to strategize our growth this year in Catholic and Salesian values. We identified concrete ways – through the teaching of history, the administering of the front office, the offering of guidance, to name a few areas – by which we could make Jesus Christ and Don Bosco more alive in our midst. On October 11 of this month the Catholic Church will begin the celebration of a Year of Faith, called by Pope Benedict to commemorate the 50

th anniversary of the opening of Vatican Council II and the 20

th

anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This offers us a graced opportunity.

Here at Don Bosco Prep we can make use of this special year to experience – both students and adults – the joy which comes from a relationship of friendship with the Lord Jesus and communion with the greater family of the Church. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

October 2012 Dear Parents/Guardians, Greetings from Don Bosco Prep! The year is now in full swing as we move from the novelty of the new school year into the cooler days of autumn. Students and teachers are settled in and the year is off to a great start. The spirit of St. John Bosco pervades our halls and classrooms, and the boys are showing great enthusiasm and leadership. Thanks to all who helped make our first month a successful one! A few items of note:

We are thrilled to have received the news that one of our seniors has been named a National Merit Semi-Finalist based on his outstanding scores on the PSAT exam taken during junior year. Congratulations to Corey Meyer on this fine honor. We also received word that 8 additional seniors have been named National Merit Commended Students: Michael Q. Gaffey, Anthony Gallo, Michael Leone, Robert E. Matts, Brendan Mullen, Anthony G. Orosz, Kevin Sheehy, and Michael W. Sielski. We are very proud of these boys and their achievements! This year’s PSAT exam is scheduled for Wednesday, October 17

th.

During the 1st week of October, 16 Bosco students will be representing the school at a very

important Leadership retreat. Seniors Travis Curtin and Chris D’Amicowill be team leaders for a group comprised of CJ deNicola, Anthony Gallo, Damien McNichol, Matthew Owens, Matthew Rogalski, Chris Sachs, Brian Zied and Chris Zonghetti. We keep these students in our prayers that this might be a rewarding and fruitful retreat for them. Our first parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for October 11

th from 3-5pm and 6:30-

8:30pm. Please make every effort to attend to speak with your son’s teachers. On October 16

th, The Saint Francis DeSales Chapter of the National Honor Society will hold its induction

ceremony for juniors and seniors. These students represent the highest ideals of scholarship, character, leadership and service- I ask for your prayers for their continued leadership. On October 26

th, we host what is truly the beginning of a yearlong series of “commencement

events” for our seniors with our Senior-Parent Breakfast. It is a wonderful time to spend time together and share a meal as a “family” with our seniors. Please continue to pray for them as they move through their final year with Don Bosco “on campus”; as we know, they will remain with Don Bosco forever. The month of October is traditionally dedicated to Mary in the title Our Lady of the Rosary. Throughout the month, students will have the opportunity to pray the rosary together. Mary, as the mother of Jesus, knows your needs and desires as parents of maturing young men. May she be our intercessor with her Son to help us educate and form the young men – your sons and our students – who fill our lives each day! Peace and God Bless,

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR ACADEMICS

Dear Parents, Students, and Friends, As we settle into the new school year I would like to remind everyone of a key element in academic success: study. While some students know quite well the importance of study, other students minimize it to the detriment of their academic success. Unfortunately, with our busy schedules the first item to get left off of our to-do lists is often study. Many students fall into the trap of merely doing homework and thinking that their work is completed for the evening. Study is different than homework and has a different function. Homework tends to check the understanding of a specific day’s work. Studying tends to build linkages over larger spans of time, and cements information into our long-term memories. Each student should be spending about three hours a day five days a week in homework and study. This works out to about thirty minutes of preparation for six major classes. Students should have a quiet place where they can study, and they should develop the habit of studying every night regardless of the amount of homework Study helps each student to achieve his academic potential. I would encourage each student to remember the Don Bosco Prep policy that class placement for sophomores, juniors and seniors is based on the grades earned during the previous year. This system provides an equal opportunity to all. Students who earn the required grades can move to higher level classes on a subject by subject basis. Students who do not meet the minimum requirements are moved to a level more in line with their achievement. This is especially true for AP courses. When our school established minimum grades for AP courses it is based on the results of how previous students did in such courses. We at Don Bosco Prep want all of our students to work hard to attain the best of their capabilities. Our goal at Don Bosco Prep is to challenge the minds, bodies and souls of our Ironmen and our course requirements are meant to spur you on to achievement. If you want to take honors or AP classes in the future, now is the time to work hard to earn the necessary grades. I would also like to make you aware of some important dates and academic events in October: Friday, October 5, 2012: The last day to drop/add any course(s) for Grade 9. FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

To all Students, Parents and Friends, I hope that all of you had a restful summer and are settling in for the new school year. Whether you are a Senior looking forward to graduation, or a Freshman beginning a new life chapter, I wish you good luck and much success in the months to come. Since the beginning of last month, I have noticed a few issues that I believe should be brought to your attention. Please take a few moments to review the following:

The uniform and grooming mandates of Don Bosco are noted on pages 53-54 of the Parent/Student

Handbook, also referred to as the Agenda. Since the need to adhere to these rules has been mentioned repeatedly in the past, I will not note them any further other than to say that parents should make sure that their young men are compliant.

Please note that students are responsible to serve detentions on the next school day following issu-

ance. Any requests to postpone serving detention must be approved by the Assistant Principal for Student Affairs. There are no exceptions to this policy.

We are seeing an increasing number of cell phone violations. Please remember that a student is lia-

ble to have their cell phone confiscated for one (1) week for the first violation, and a second viola-tion may result in the phone being confiscated for the remainder of the Academic Year. Students who need to be reached in an emergency can be contacted by calling the Don Bosco office at 201.327.8003.

Please remember that students must register their cars in order to park on campus. General student

parking is by permit only, with students parking in the middle and upper lots in assigned spaces. The failure of students to park properly may result in the vehicle being towed. Any student who operates a vehicle in an unsafe manner may have their privilege to park on campus revoked and/or be subject to additional disciplinary action.

Parents are again requested to become familiar with the Agenda and especially those sections that address comportment, dress code and attendance. Ongoing school bus drills will continue with students who ride a bus to and/or from school. If you

From The Office of Youth Ministry

Some people are so foolish that they think they can go through life

without the help of the Blessed Mother. Love the Madonna and pray

the rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world

today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother." St. Padre Pio

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, so I hope that we can pray and grow in

this spiritual practice because the power of the rosary is beyond description. As a school

community we are going to pray the rosary together where each class grade will have a specific

day to pray the rosary. I do want to point an important event that youth ministry will be

organizing this month which the Mother and Son retreat on Saturday October 27th

. This retreat

will be held at Don Bosco Prep in the School Auditorium in DeSales Hall.

In this month the Youth Ministry activities are pumping life into the School, so I would

like to briefly describe them to you with dates and information.

- During October 1st through October 4

th there will be the October Leadership retreat,

a retreat that is held for students who attend Salesian Schools in the Eastern United

States. Eight seniors will be attending this retreat.

- On October 5th

, we will be having our first Friday Adoration. The Blessed Sacrament

will be exposed in the chapel throughout the day.

- October 18th

– Senior Rosary during 2nd

period class and October 23rd

Sophomore Rosary during 2nd

period class.

- October 25th

– Junior Rosary during 2nd

– Freshmen

- A group of seniors will be going to Nicaragua to build a house for the family of Flor

WEST NILE VIRUS

Summer vacation may be over, but one remnant, the mosquito, is still alive and well and causing havoc. Experts believe that West Nile Virus (WNV) is established as a seasonal epidemic in North America that flares up in the summer and continues into fall. You have probably read that a case of WNV was confirmed in Bergen County a few weeks ago. Rainy, muggy weather creates the perfect environment for mosqui-toes to breed. WNV is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Prevention -Reduce mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buck-ets, barrels, wading pools, bird baths, old tires, wheel barrows, etc. Clean clogged gut-ters. Repair ill fitting or broken window screens. -When you are outdoors, use insect repellent containing EPA registered active ingredi-ent. Follow the directions on the package. -Mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn. Be sure to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves, pants and socks at these times or consider staying indoors during these hours. Symptoms Serious symptoms occur in approximately one in 150 people. Symptoms can include: high fever, headache, neck stiffness, tremors, disorientation, muscle weakness, vision loss, paralysis, or coma. Symptoms may last several weeks and some symptoms may be permanent. Seek medical attention immediately. Milder symptoms occur in approximately 20% of the people and can include fever, headache, body ache, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands or rash. These can last from a few days to a few weeks. Most people (80%) will have no symptoms but there is no way to know in advance if you will become ill.

MEMO FOR SENIORS

SPECTRUM

The Spectrum Program will return to DBP this fall. Spectrum is a peer support program for young people who have experienced the loss of a parent, family member or friend because of death, divorce, separation or abandonment. Spectrum is NOT counseling or therapy; it IS an opportunity to meet other students who have experienced loss in their own lives, to support and learn from one another, to discuss their experiences of loss and how to face those difficult times, and an opportunity to help one another move on in life in a more positive way. It's hard to talk about loss. Sometimes kids feel that friends don't understand, or that others are tired of hearing about their pain. It may be hard to talk at home, where family members are dealing with their own problems. Too often, adults don't realize that kids are hurting too. They think young people will just "bounce back". That's not realistic, and it's not fair to the kids who are hurting. Some of the topics discussed include helping students to understand loss and how it may be affecting them, anger, sadness, dealing with changes in the family and their new role and responsibilities, unrealistic guilt, making positive choices and decisions, and forgiveness.

Students meet after school in a small group with a trained adult facilitator for about an hour once a week, for twelve weeks. Groups will begin by late September and the program will conclude by Christmas.

Students interested in joining Spectrum or who have questions about the program are asked to contact Mr.

DeLucci in the Guidance Office.

TEXTBOOK INFORMATION:

Our students should have all received their textbooks which are loaned to them from Don Bosco Prep for the 2012-2013 school year. By now all books should have been covered, using brown-paper which is still the best material for book co-vers. Do not use book socks or adhesive as they damage our books. Those stu-dents still making schedule changes will need to see me, Mrs. Saglimbene, to deter-mine if they need to make any textbook changes. Our students taking Biology and Chemistry Honors have just received new books accompanied with ebooks. We will begin registration for these ebooks during the first week of October. Please note that these books must be returned in like-new condition (no markings, drawings or writing inside these new books). Remember, condition of our books are monitored before distribution, and upon distribution the uniquely barcoded book is attached to the students account. Therefore, at the end of the school year, students will need to return that specific book given to them at the time of book distribution. Any questions – call Mrs. Saglimbene at ext. 143

Helping Salesian Families in Louisiana

Some of our Salesian families from our parishes and schools in Louisiana have been badly affected by Hurricane Isaac.

Mission Club is partnering with Archbishop Shaw High School in Marrero, LA to help our brothers and sisters.

We are collecting gift cards for Lowe’s, Home Depot, WalMart, and Best Buy in any amount. The cards will be sent

to Archbishop Shaw, and they will be distributed to needy families.

Proceeds from Mission Club cookie sales will go toward this effort for the next few months. Please help if you can. If you can’t give a gift card, please pray for these families—they are

so grateful to know we are thinking about them.

To All Don Bosco Prep Parents,

Fall is here, and so is Ironman football! With football comes the opening of the Ironman café [aka the snack shack]. As luck would have it, last week a vehicle ran into our shack, and the shack suffered some significant damage. Repairs have already begun, but at this writing, the shack may not be usable for our first game. That being said, your time, talents and spirit of volunteer-ism would be even more appreciated. If we can’t use the shack, we may need some extra people power to smooth out the bumps and obstacles that may occur. Below is a list of our upcoming events. If you can’t make it to the games, please try to stop in at our October meeting. Friday, 10/5 at 7pm: Home game vs. Fair Lawn Friday, 10/12 at 7pm: Home game vs. Paramus Catholic [we will start setting up on game days at 4pm] Tuesday, 10/23 at 7:30: Father’s Club meeting [in the cafeteria] Let me know if you would be able to make any of the games so we can get a headcount. Underclassmen Picture Makeup Day – October 11, 2012 Underclassmen picture makeup day is scheduled for October 11. If your son did not get his picture taken during orienta-tion, or if you are not pleased with your picture package, please remind your son to get his picture taken on October 11. Please return the original picture package on the day of the re-take.

Senior Portrait Pose Selection – deadline October 10, 2012 By now, you should have received a mailing from Prestige Portraits with your son’s portrait pictures that were taken in May. Instructions were provided regarding how to select (online) the Yearbook pose. Please do so by October 10. To date, nearly half the Senior class has NOT yet chosen a pose. If you do not choose a pose by October 10, one will be chosen for you by Prestige. Please remember to choose a pose with a BLUE background. If you request a different pose after Octo-ber 10, there will be a $25.00 “change pose” fee.

If your son did not get his senior picture taken yet, he needs to call Prestige Portraits (1-800-426-9533) and schedule a time at the studio in South Plainfield, NJ.

Senior Quotes/Activites – deadline November 20, 2012 In September, your son received an email (through the Bosco email system) that links him to the online form regarding his Senior Quote/Activities. Please refer to page 26 for complete instructions.

“After Hours” Articles – deadline November 20, 2012 As you may be aware, there is a section in the Yearbook named “After Hours.” This section is dedicated to events and happenings by students and faculty “after school hours.” Did your son do something special over the summer? Will your son be doing something special this school year? Will he be earning an award soon (i.e. Eagle Scout)? Did he do some special volunteer work? If so, the Bosconian staff would like to hear from you. Please contact Ms. Fecht, Yearbook Advis-er, or email an article (with pictures) to yearbook@donboscoprep.org by November 20, 2012.

Senior Ads – deadline November 15, 2012 Only ½ page ads will be accepted. Dimensions are Length (5 ½”) X Width (8 ½”). The ad section of the Yearbook will be in color, so please submit a color ad. Price for ad is $200. Your submitted ad must be camera ready. A camera ready ad is one where a) you cut-out and paste the pictures and text on a piece of paper and then submit the completed ad or b) you create the ad using a software package of your choice and you print it out and submit it. Your ad will be published just the way you submit it. The Yearbook staff will not alter anything. The Yearbook staff will not print out any ads, so please do not electronically send us the ad. Please do not submit loose photos and text – they will not be accepted and will be returned to you. Please make sure the student’s full name is on the ad. Ads must be submitted with a completed Senior Ad Form (below). A copy of this form will also be available online in September.

Do Senior Quotes Online!!!

In order for your senior quote/activities to be included in the year-book please follow these directions:

Go to your Don Bosco Prep Look for the email with the subject line “Senior Quote/

Activity Form” Open the email and click on the designated link. This will

bring you to the online form. Fill out the Senior Quote/Activity Form completely and to the

best of your knowledge - don’t just make things up. Also, make sure all your spelling is correct - especially any name that is referenced.

Please follow the format that is shown (i.e. commas, hy-

phens, spaces, etc.)

Hit the “Submit” button when you’re finished and that’s it! To make changes/corrections at a later date, please open the

BMail that confirms/shows you the information you sent. The email will have a link that says “edit my response”.

Click on it and it will bring you back to your original form. Make your changes and SUBMIT again.
