Laser Sail-Off – September 7 The Laser Sail-Off was sailed under sunny skies and fresh breezes. We had a terrific turnout with ten brave souls. With six functioning Lasers for the event, we set up a system with four sailors sitting out any particular race - but never sitting out more than two races in a row or racing more than three races in a row. The final results had Kevin Wasbauer in first place with six straight first place finishes (6 points total). Second through fourth places were decided by a spread of only four points with Karen Flick in second (12 points), Charlie Quest in third (15 points) and Rick Winans in fourth (16 points). Neil Hooper and Mike Day were right behind, both with 18 points --- Neil took fifth place honors on the point break. The remaining sailors were Richard Hector in seventh (29 points), Mike Sears in eighth (32 points), Michel Bergh in ninth (34 points) and Gary McWherter in tenth (35 points).

Vice Commodore’s Cup – September 26 & 27 The first race of the regatta started in what could only be described as less-than-wonderful conditions. Simply stated, there was no wind at the starting line. Even the sprightly Lasers struggled to get across the harbor to the Committee Boat. However, things soon improved and by late morning there was plenty of breeze for everyone. Among the regatta highlights was the excellent turnout of boats and sailors. There were 11 C15s, 10 Lasers and all 6 Cal20s vying for honors, one of the largest gatherings of racers in recent Club history. Lasers and Cal20s raced on Saturday only, with the C15 fleet competing on both days. Chairing the 2009 Vice Commodore’s Cup was (appropriately) Vice Commodore Neal Wehtje. Principal Race Officer was Kelly Pike, assisted by several others on the Race Committee.

Book Review:

Three Books on a Sailing Race Around the World By Ken Ayer

Did you ever want to sail in hurricane force winds and fifty foot seas, alone, around the world and back again, without ever touching land? Neither have I, but I do enjoy reading about such sailors and voyages. The Godforsaken Sea, by Derek Lundy, (Algonquin) tells the tale of the 1996–1997 Vendee Globe race and tells it well. The race leaves Les Sables d’ Olonne, France, and sails south around the Cape of Good Hope, through the Indian Ocean, south

of Australia and New Zealand, around Cape Horn, and back to France – 22,700 nautical miles and about 4 months of racing. The racers included 14 men and 2 women at the start; 5 men and 1 woman finished.

Pete Goss sailed in that one, and left the race to rescue Raphael Dinelli, whose boat sank as he stepped UP into the lifeboat that the Australians dropped to him. He tells his own version of it in Close to the Wind. (Carrol & Graff) Pete sailed upwind in Force 10 (about 50 knot) winds to reach Dinelli (French) and found him hypothermic, almost immobile, but with just enough left to hoist the bottle of champagne he offered Pete. Pete (English) hauled him aboard and offered a cup of hot tea. You really need to read both to understand how modest Goss is, and what the tradition means that sailors fight all odds (including race rules) to rescue other sailors in distress.

But you really need to read Ellen McArthur’s Taking on the World (McGraw-Hill) to understand what it takes to inspire the world and, incidentally, raise the capital to compete in this toughest of all races. That’s a couple of million, and not easy to entice out of business people when your parents aren’t rich, and you’re very young. She came in second in 2000 - 2001, the youngest person ever to complete the race at the age of 24. Not to mention one of the few who ever completed the race.

It’s a toss up whether the attraction is the sailing or the sailors in these books. What makes anyone want to sail a boat into the worst seas in the world? Are the sailors insane or inspired?

Pumpkin Festival is Just Around the Corner!

It’s almost time for Pumpkin Festival! The two-day event is scheduled for Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18.

The main focus of activity will be the Club’s Calamari booth on Main Street.

We annually fry and sell hundreds of pounds of Calamari to hungry visitors at the Festival.

Frankly, it’s a lot of work. But it is also a great way to make new friends and have fun, too. Just ask anyone who has done it! Our volunteer coordinator is Maureen Grimm. Keelboat Sponsors in Stitches On September 12 over a dozen keelboat sponsors got together for a sewing party. They produced new sail covers, jib bags, tiller covers, and gear bags for the keelboat fleet. Sandra Scowen, shown above, was one of the people who manned Dave Morris’ heavy-duty sewing machine. Vahine is also shown sporting her new sail cover and jib bag. FIRST ANNUAL PUMPKIN PATCH ROUNDUP

In keeping with the Coastside spirit of Halloween and pumpkins, HMBYC is sponsoring the first-ever Pumpkin Roundup Race on Saturday, October 31.

There will be a skippers’ meeting at noon, with a 1pm start for all fleets. We have a rating system to even the field between the different classes. This will be a timed event around the course with the appropriate rating applied to each boat.

Along the course will be scattered gourds to ghouls -- rescue as many as your crew can and reduce your overall time. More crew on your boat will score a bigger reduction (up to the allowable limit for your boat) . Make it kids and get a bigger reduction.

Sorry, no nets, pitchforks or harpoons allowed. Gourdal gouging is strictly prohibited! Parental or spousal permission required. Best costumed crewmember award. Kids can carve a pumpkin afterward if the parents clean up after them and bring the tools to do it!

Bar Manager’s Report by Deb Kessler

I hope you have been enjoying the bar offerings for the past few months. I continually monitor sales and trends and try to bring you a good variety at reasonable prices. You may have noticed the recent discontinuation of the Clos la Chance zinfandel; it has been replaced by Flock, a wonderful old vine zinfandel produced by Smoking Loon. It is selling for $5 per glass or $20 per bottle. On the red wine front, we are close to the end of our Clos la Chance syrah and I look forward to offering you a delicious Australian shiraz to replace it in the near future. In the white wines, we will soon close out our Benvolio pinot grigio due to dramatically decreased demand. I do not plan to replace it.

The Domaine Sorin rose’ has been a tremendous hit since I brought it on in the spring. This was a direct result of a group of members requesting this wine. Unfortunately, it has been so popular everywhere and the vintage is entirely sold out. I am researching another rose’ to replace this very popular wine. I encourage anyone with a specific wine or a varietal request to email me at barmanager@hmbyc.org. I have to balance cost, inventory, and ease of delivery (so no promises!), but I will look into your requests.

With the approval of our Port Captain, I am going to put some of our low-selling wines on sale to clear our inventory. Currently we are selling the Las Rocas Spanish garnacha for only $3 per glass. This is a lovely food wine and I encourage you to try it at this great price. Be on the lookout for future sales—reduced prices will be in effect until the stock is gone. Cheers!

Congratulations and Best Wishes

The Club extends its very best wishes to Marcus Choy and Beth Lee, who were married on September 13 on the lanai overlooking the harbor. Neil Hooper officiated and many members of the Club were present since the ceremony was unannounced and all were welcome to witness the nuptials. Shown here after the action ended are the merry sailors who participated in Cal20 racing. Winds were light but that didn’t seem to dampen spirits as the fleet made its way (slowly) around the marks. Dave Morris organized the courses, set the marks and generally ran the event, all the while sailing around among the Cal20s in the much faster Impulse, Vahine. Dave graciously kept Vahine out of the competition but did not hesitate to show the rest of the fleet Vahine’s stern at every opportunity. Go, Dave!
