The Bridge

Congratulations to the winners of, and all those who completed, the San Fernando Race, and good luck to everyone taking part in the Commodore’s Cup in Subic Bay. I would like to thank everyone who took part in the San Fernando Charity Dinner and Auction, which raised nearly $400,000 for the San Fernando Orphanage we help to support.

Congratulations also to the winners of the Coastal Race powered by the Asian le Mans Series, the 29er

Nationals, the Inter-School Sailing Festival, the HKRNVR and the Top Dog Trophy Series.

Coming up soon, on 13 and 14 April, is the Middle Island Regatta. Don’t forget to get your entry in by the deadline of 8 April!

This year the Nations’ Cup will be held on Saturday 27 April. Don’t miss the fun and action on the water and on shore that this relatively new but already immensely popular regatta has to offer. On the day after Nations’ Cup, after ‘everyone against each other’ it will be ‘everyone against the Dutch’ in the Beatrix Cup – a timely celebration of Queen Beatrix’s reign before she abdicates at the end of April.

In rowing, the Club’s dragon boaters, the Royal X Team, have started training in earnest using the new fibreglass training boats. The new dragon boats take over from two long-serving timber boats, and had their eyes dotted at a bai san ceremony this month.

The General Committee has agreed to introduce an annual dinner in recognition of the many individuals who have been members of the Club for a very long time. As such I would like to introduce to you the ‘Senior 100 Dinner’ being held for those who have been active members, since they became junior members, for the longest time and who are still resident in Hong Kong. I am sure that this will be a very welcome

Commodore’s Message

Commodore Joachim isler

initiative and will give the Club an annual opportunity to recognise the loyalty and commitment of our long-standing members.

As any boat owner (and potential owner) will be aware, the current shortage of moorings continues to be a major concern not only for the Club, but also for the wider boating community in Hong Kong. Government has received a number of proposals for the development of more public mooring facilities for pleasure vessels, and in the meantime the Club is actively researching what can be done within our existing mooring areas to improve the efficiency of mooring usage. We hope to have an update and outline proposals within the next few months, but for the moment, as our waiting lists continue to bulge, our immediate focus remains on ensuring that the moorings we have are allocated to boats that are being actively used.

You may have noticed in the press and through television programmes recently that the subject of the renewal of club Private Recreational leases (PRls), continues to rumble on. Whilst the first of our such leases, that for Shelter Cove, does not come due for renewal until 2014, the Club is already in active discussions with Government as to what new requirements might be imposed and how we might best ensure our full compliance. I will keep you informed as negotiations progress.

The Club’s 2013 Electoral General Meeting will take place on Tuesday 11 June at 1830hrs in the Compass Room. There are eight posts on General Committee for which elections are necessary – including Rear Commodore (Sailing), Rear Commodore (Club), Honorary Treasurer and Rowing Captain. I would like to invite our life and Full Members to put forward for consideration by the Nominating Committee (of which I am the Chairman), the names of members who they think could be suitable for these positions, and who are either life Members or who have been Full Members for at least two years, and I would be more than happy to receive your nominations before Tuesday 16 April by email to [email protected]

I will shortly be writing to all members with details of the next tranche of ID memberships. Initial details are available on page 8.

See you at the Club and on the water!

General Manager’s MessageWelcome to the first edition of the newly revamped Ahoy!. I hope you will like the new look and will find the new layout easier to navigate around all your favourite pages. Whilst on the subject of the magazine, may I take this opportunity to thank all the members who take the time to submit articles and photographs – please do continue to send them in, as they are very much appreciated and are what make our magazine so current and relevant to our members and the sports we all love.

On the sporting front, congratulations to Joe Nelson and David Bone on Flying Fifteen Squiffy for lifting the HKRNVR Memorial Vase. Second place went to our own Boatyard manager, Simon Pickering, on his Flying Fifteen Ffact or Ffiction and in third was the Isler/Taylor-owned Ambush who also lifted the Top Dog Trophy for the second year running!

Following a comment from a member who was trying to identify the leader of the HKRNVR from the Main Bar balcony, our sponsor, Minnox, has kindly provided some wonderful binoculars which will be kept behind the Main Bar for members to borrow. Please sign a chit for these – you will only be charged in the event of loss or damage.

It’s time to show your appreciation of your secretary by treating her or him to our Secretary’s Week luncheon, available from 22 to 26 April in

the Compass Room. And whilst you are at it don’t forget to book your place for the Spanish Wine Fair with BBQ Buffet Dinner by the Poolside on 25 April.

The Ocean Recovery Alliance presents the second San Francisco/Hong Kong Ocean Film Festival from 9 to 17 April, and I am delighted that this year we will have two film evenings at the Club – one at Shelter Cove on Friday 12 April, and one on the Main lawn on Monday 15 April. A mixture of films will be shown on each evening, and they promise to be both entertaining and educational. The Ocean Recovery Alliance is a registered charitable organisation in Hong Kong and strives to bring together new ways of thinking, technologies, creativity and collaborations in order to introduce innovative projects and initiatives that will help improve our ocean environment. I hope many of you will support these two evenings – further details are on page 34.

Boxercise classes have been running for a year now and it seems members are becoming more interested in getting fit, as Tai Chi and Pilates classes are also about to start up – more details on page 34.

I am pleased to report that the refurbishment of Middle Island is progressing well and is still well on target to being completed on time and within budget. The new sail lockers and the sail storage facility are proving popular, and the additional boat storage facility in the old rowing tank allows for better organisation and increased storage of various types of paddle boats.

I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

Individual DebenturesAs agreed at the Electoral General Meeting last year, the General Committee will release batches of the remaining Individual Debenture memberships as part of the strategy of financing the Kellett Island development plans. over the years these memberships have been released in small batches to generate our development reserve and during each of the periods of sale, we have received a strong demand from interested parties. The feedback from our most recent Individual Debenture Members is also that they truly value their membership of the Club and its traditions and facilities.

At a recent review meeting agreement was reached to release the next tranche of eight Individual Debenture Memberships at the revised price of HK$1.3M, with the special offer period valid from 1 April to 30 June 2013.

If you are aware of any of your friends or colleagues who would be interested in becoming a member of our Club through these Individual Debenture Memberships, then we would be grateful if you could make them aware of this opportunity.

On this, the 11th edition of the Inter-School Sailing Festival held over the weekend of 9 and 10 March, we welcomed Ericsson as Title Sponsor, whilst Neil Pryde were again very generous as a Supporting Sponsor, providing the popular event rash vests for the 190 sailors taking part.

Ericsson Inter-School Sailing Festival

he weekend’s forecast was perfect for a rowing event. Unfortunately this was a sailing regatta and whilst sailors welcomed the sun, everyone would have loved a bit more wind. Despite the conditions, however, the full format of 60 races was completed on day one which consisted of a round-robin format for each of the two pools in the two divisions (Feva and Q’ba/Pico). There were few surprises in the results at the end of Saturday’s racing, with the top seeded teams all doing well.

There were at least three different possible formats for day two with the longest consisting of another round robin requiring 60 races but it was clear that this format would be risky on a day when there was even less wind forecast. Therefore the Race Committee decided on a knockout format that consisted of 40 races with each team racing at least three more races each.

After two knockout rounds it was Kellett School versus KGV and Hong Kong School Sailing Association against South Island School in the Feva semi- finals. In two very close races it was Kellett School and South Island School that secured their places in the final.

Meanwhile in the Q’ba semi-finals it was Hong Kong Sea School B team who defeated their C team and Renaissance College defeated KGV for places in the final.

Just before the finals started the light breeze all but disappeared in front of the Club and in order to finish the final races the course was moved towards Deep Water Bay although the windward marks were still located 100m from the Club ensuring the spectators could still see the action from onshore.

Both finals were sailed in the same conditions that were experienced all weekend, light and shifty, and it was South Island School who got the better of Kellett School and Hong Kong Sea School defeated Renaissance College to take the overall division wins.

Peter Davies from Neil Pryde and laurence McDonald from Ericsson were on hand to present the prizes to the top four teams in each division.

Many thanks to Ericsson, Neil Pryde and Aberdeen Boat Club as well as all the volunteers

including the race management team led by Sofia Mascia and the umpiring team led by Emily Randall.

This regatta has a history of experiencing windy events followed by a ‘light’ year. 2014 therefore should be a windy one!

The finale of the 2012-2013 Top Dog Trophy Series came ‘in like a lion and out like a lamb’ with 63 boats competing for the beautiful piece of silverware gifted in memory of the Royal volunteer Naval Reserve, whose volunteer sailors used to patrol Hong Kong waters in bygone times.

he Deed of Gift for the HKRNVR Memorial Vase stipulates that the race takes the fleet out of the confines of Victoria Harbour. Race Officer Gareth Williams was so impressed by the early breeze that he issued a notice to competitors adding an additional course option which would take them as far as Shek O Rock, but, much to the disappointment of some, the wind softened out before the start of the race, and Course 2 was selected.

Just as well.

By the time the lead Flying Fifteen had rounded TCS 4 a hole had developed at lei Yue Mun Gap, in which 61 boats got well and truly stuck while Joe Nelson on Squiffy and Simon Pickering on Ffact or Ffiction eased through to Chai Wan and managed to keep moving, with Ruffian Schannuleke not far adrift.

The lead pair were bow to bow as they rounded Dock Buoy before Squiffy squeezed ahead to finish at Gate Buoy eight minutes ahead of the target cut-off time. A stately procession of boats followed them home with Ambush finishing third just over six minutes later, followed closely by Puff’n’Stuff and Dream On.

Of the top ten boats going into this, the final race of the Top Dog Trophy Series 2012-2013, only Red Kite II and Peninsula Signal 8 swapped places, with the A35’s 9th place enough to jump the 13th-placed Ker 40. Ambush successfully pursued the fleet to take third place and, never out of the top five boats all series, ensured her name is engraved on the Top Dog Trophy for the second year in a row.

With no protests to be heard, the hordes gathered on the Kellett Island lawn, where Gareth and Di Williams presented the awards, including a five-day charter voucher from Sunsail for the overall Top Dog.

Presented by iconic yacht brand Jeanneau, this year’s Class Regatta held in Port Shelter over the weekend of 2 and 3 March attracted 44 boats from seven one-design classes, including 14 J/80s. Not for the faint-hearted, this regatta is renowned for making the most of Hong Kong’s cold, wet, Lunar New Year conditions, however the weather gods were smiling on Race Officer Simon Boyde and his team, inflicting nothing worse than a slight chill in the air.

he format could not be simpler. Two fleets – long course and short course – competing over two days and five races, with one discard. With race management instructor Robert lamb on hand, Boyde used all his experience to fit in two races on the Saturday, with only the Ruffian class struggling to finish within the stipulated time limit for the first race. Sunday offered a variable swinging easterly, causing a number of boats to miscalculate their starts and earn an OCS score, but ultimately enabled the fleets to enjoy three two-lap sprints to complete the regatta.

At a lively prizegiving, unhindered by protest hearings, class prizes and overall divisional prizes were presented by Don Chow, Director of China Pacific Marine limited.

In a good weekend for the Etchells, Peter Backe on Swedish Blue missed a long Course picket fence by one race to finish six points ahead of Coates/Jukes on The Battler, with Greg Farrell on Dream On only three points further back. In the Short Course fleet, Dennis Chien cleaned up with Impala Taxi, four points ahead of Akira Takada’s Flying Fifteen French Fries, with Phyllis Chang on Dragon Phyloong III six points further adrift.

The Club would like to thank China Pacific Marine and Jeanneau for their continued support of the Class Regatta. The Race Management team also deserves recognition and thanks, particularly those members who came out for both days. This year’s championships saw a record of 11 entrants compete for the title of National Champions. We saw a much wider group of entries from around Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Sea School and Hebe Haven Yacht Club. We also saw past skiff sailors come back for some fun in a small boat.

his event was the 2nd selector event for the ISAF Youth Worlds to be held in Cyprus this summer.

On the Saturday, the sailors had a great breeze from the east. The fleet sailed from RHKYC Middle Island, and Race Officer Joe Nelson set the course in the Tai Tam Bay area for greater wind strength, and less shifts and gusts.

This area saw quite a big sea state which certainly made it a bit more of a challenge for some of the newer sailors. The wind was fairly moderate, between 10kts and 20kts over the day.

In the first race of the day, the fleet got off to a good start with all sailors fighting for a good position on the line. Unfortunately for some though,

a huge shift came in straight after the gun causing the three ABC boats to capsize. They promptly righted and carried on.

At the top mark, it was skiff legend Peter Backe with the young Calum Gregor that was first rounding, closely chased by Henry Salmon and Aymeric Gillard and Cosmas Grelon and Nathan Bradley.

After a few thrills (and spills from some pairs) Cosmas and Nathan clawed back to claim the victory.

Page 21: Ahoy! April 2013

APRIl 2013 ahoy! | 21

The next race was a similar affair. A good start by most of the sailors. Some chose to go to the right-hand side for clean air and a hopeful right shift, where others headed hard left for some convergence from the shore line. Places were close up the beat, swapping all the time. Throughout the race, Cosmas and Nathan, along with the Sakai duo of Nagisa and Akira, managed to pull out some distance on the rest of the fleet with their well-picked shifts, giving Cosmas another victory with Team Sakai in second.

The third race saw a great result from a potential budding 29er sailor. Yann d’ Argenlieu, sailing with Andy Service (skiff master), used his tactical skills from the Optimist class and Andy’s skiff sailing knowledge to sail to a well-earned 2nd place again behind Cosmas and Nathan.

In the 4th race the wind had dropped a bit more and it was the turn of our own budding Optimist sailor Calum Gregor (with Peter Backe) to get into the top results. After not starting too well, they managed to pick some great shifts up the second beat and with some good boat speed and tactical decisions downwind, they finished in 2nd place, again behind the seemingly unstoppable Cosmas and Nathan.

By the end of Saturday, Cosmas and Nathan were in first place overall, with Nagisa and Akira in second and Yann and Andy in third.

On Sunday the sailors were greeted with stronger winds gusting at over 20kts at points.

The race area was moved to the Repulse Bay area under the watchful eye of Andrew Malone as Race Officer.

Andrew was fast to set up the course catching out some of the sailors who were not at the start line at the warning signal. The race was started with only about five boats crossing the line – and the others later arrived just inside the four-minute cut-off.

By this point the wind was strong and for most sailors it was a case of just trying to stay upright around the course. After a late start, RHKYC’s Aymeric and Henry stormed through the fleet with their great boat speed to take a second place at the line not too far behind Cosmas and Nathan. Calum with Peter then arrived in third place at the finish.

In the second race of the day, both Wilhelm Christensson and Samuel McDonald and Henry and Aymeric were keen to get a better start. They flew off the line with great pace on the front row. Sadly both boats were just over after a good race. The other boats all sailed very well in tricky conditions. It was now starting to get gustier and shiftier. Calum again managed to sneak through into 2nd place just in front of Team Sakai, but again, no team could beat Cosmas and Nathan.

In the third race on Sunday there was finally some change. Team Sakai and Cosmas and Nathan had a really close battle the whole way around the course, swapping between 1st and 2nd place and being wildly chased by Calum and Peter. The two top teams however managed to pull out some distance on the fleet and finished a good margin ahead of the others. It was Nagisa and Akira in the end that pulled through and snatched victory from Cosmas and Nathan to ruin their perfect scoreline. A very well-deserved race win.

And so into the last race… The wind had got a little lighter and shiftier making for tricky racing. The Sakais and Cosmas and Nathan again pulled out fairly quickly to race among themselves. In the mid-fleet positions were tight and swapping all the time with each shift. After two exhausting last laps to the end of the championships, again Nagisa and Akira managed to pull through for the win followed very closely by Cosmas and Nathan. Yann and Andy managed to sail well to finish in 3rd place with RHKYC’s Wilhelm and Samuel in 4th place.

It didn’t take a mathematician to work out that Cosmas Grelon and Nathan Bradley took the deserved title of National Champions for 2013. With it, they also won the selection to represent Hong Kong at the ISAF Youth Worlds in Cyprus later this year. In 2nd place were Nagisa and Akira Sakai, with Optimist sailor Calum Gregor and crew Peter Backe in 3rd place – well done!

All in all it was a fantastic event and it was brilliant to see some new and old faces in the fleet. We hope next year will be bigger and better. Big thanks to Joe Nelson and Andrew Malone and their helpers for doing a grand job of the race management.

eld on Sunday 17 and Saturday 23 February with no more than nine boats on the water for either of the days, entry numbers were down for this three-year-old two-day regatta that was brought in to replace the Uin Na Mara series. Too close to Chinese New Year?

The first day’s promised mid-teens wind ended up being nothing more than the fond imaginings of wind forecasters in Hong Kong and the Czech Republic. On the course itself it was a patchy 4-5kts with gusts of 6kts coming out of the north. A combined start saw the fleet away on a lap of the square course, and those who stayed north on the first beat (Ambush and EFG Bank Mandrake) picked up enough extra pressure to steal a lead by the first mark. After mark two, the two Mills boats were able to hold enough pressure further north to do one gybe to the final leg, whereas most of the others did three gybes to seek out pressure further south. Patience won the day, with Ambush and EFG Bank Mandrake finishing first and second.

For Race 2, the windward-leeward, the finishing order was defined by a comprehensive shut-down of the wind once Ambush, Mojito and Peninsula Signal 8 had all finished. The remainder of the fleet was left drifting by the top mark, or half-way down the final run; a run that became an exercise in fractional gains. Race cut-off times were tested as the last boats finished more than 30 minutes behind the leaders.

Race Officer Ross Dawson saw a new pressure band to the north of Shelter Island, and moved the Race 3 start area. It was hard to imagine that this new air was a sea breeze, as the sun hadn’t been seen all day, but whatever it was, it

had successfully fought off the Race 1 northerly and been responsible for the painful Race 2!

A combined start saw the fleet away on a short reaching race to Trio Island and back. Those that picked their way the most smoothly through the waves and pressure holes picked up the NE breeze first at the northerly end of the course. Peninsula Signal 8 and Ambush were first to find the 6-8kts breeze, and they were both away, followed a few minutes later by Mojito and EFG Bank Mandrake. RO Ross kept his eye on the back-markers, who were still struggling for any kind of forward motion, and shortened the race at Trio. The course passed the Sportsboats Championships racing out by Table, and after a lumpy, low pressure spinnaker reach, Peninsula Signal 8 claimed line Honours. Ambush secured their second win, to finish as the lead boat in IRC 1 for day 1; ahead of Mojito and Peninsula Signal 8. In IRC 2, Whiskey Jack with two wins and a 3rd was ahead of Vixen on count-back, with Talkinghead in 3rd. In parallel-scored HKPN, Div 2 was the same points and order as IRC 2, but in Div 1, Mojito was ahead of Ambush.

The second day had some wind early on, and the nine-strong fleet headed off for the first line with hopes for some action. The wind gods were capricious early on, and turned off the system at the start itself, with even the most pressing boat left flat behind the line, inching across. But as soon as the line was crossed, the wind came on again, and stayed

fair throughout the day. Off we went to the Ninepins, and our course took us round North Ninepin, starboard-rounding with spinnakers up. These were conditions that favoured the conventional kite over the A-sails, and the fleet opened up.

The first race finished at the entrance for the second race: the Back Passage around Kau Sai Chau, widdershins, one of the most beautiful pieces of water in Hong Kong. It is so pretty, in fact, that there is a distinct risk of hitting the bricks while crews are engrossed in the views of water, countryside and graceful yachts gliding goose-winged and silent past Tsam Chuk Wan.

Then round the corner into the southward channel and a race for the line. Bright weather, fresh winds, scenic courses with lots of variety and sausage-free. What more can you ask? Big boat sailing at its best.

lucy Sutro was Race Officer for the day, and preliminary results were to be uploaded onto Facebook by Jamie McWilliam from Peninsula Signal 8 who therefore had to get line Honours so that he could sit back and time the rest of us in. Needless to say, he did.

At the prizegiving, Mojito and Simon Blore’s crew got the IRC Div 1 silverware one pip ahead of Ambush and a further two ahead of Peninsula Signal 8. In IRC Div 2, Whiskey Jack and Nick Southward and crew with four bullets comfortably held off Vixen and Talkinghead.

The HKPN results were the same boats in the same order, except Darling and Dean Chisolm’s crew pipped Talkinghead for third.

Next on the Big Boats agenda – the Summer Cup on 4 and 5 May. Mark your diaries now.

he Hong Kong weather was true to form for winter during the first two months of the year. We have had some excellent racing days in the harbour with steady breeze, blue skies and warm temperatures. The fleet continues to expand with newcomers and close, competitive racing has meant some series’ final results have been tight.

We completed the Cirrus Series – Hong Kong Etchells Association’s oldest – with top place-getter Fred Kinmonth sailing Quest (1051) lifting the trophy; Marty Kaye sailed Easy Tiger (884) into second place and Nick Burns with Gunga Din (1243) was third. Kinmonth and Kaye were very consistent through the series, and it was a nail-biter down to the last race. A race day postponement meant that, having begun the series in September last year, it was only decided in late February.

Easy Tiger was consistent again in the Paddington Green series, which finished just

before Chinese New Year with Marty Kaye and co-owners Simon Watson and Matt Norton scoring three seconds and two firsts. Nick Burns sailed Gunga Din into second overall and Mark Whitehead steered Mind the Bumps (1344) into third.

This season has been packed with racing as two races on Saturday afternoon is now the norm. Completing the season are two more ‘new’ series: The Skip Etchells on March 9 and 16 in the harbour and the Rum Series in April on the lamma race course.

The Hong Kong fleet is increasingly active as we move towards the World Championship in 2015. There is a regular turnout of 14+ boats, with one or two newcomers to the fleet showing some of the others the way home. Greg Kearns and Gus Reed, who bought HKG402 only last year, have put together a very competitive crew (including our Class Secretary) and they already have two firsts

in the Farquhar series and third Etchells in the HKRNVR pursuit race held on 2 March. Marc Jukes and Michael Coates in The Battler (903) have been fast in all races and are often in the first three at the first windward mark; Thomas Cheung and Ian Richie have shown consistent improvement racing Diva (269) regularly in the harbour. Ian Fleming and Richard Nieto are moving through the fleet with Marianne 2 (1047) after a lengthy refit. The training sessions held earlier in the season have paid off with good crew work being evident in quick turns round marks and generally good boat speed throughout the fleet.

At the Class Regatta on 2 and 3 February the Love Boat trophy was once again the subject of fierce competition between the Etchells and the Sportsboats. Port Shelter in February is nobody’s favourite racing venue, but the Etchells presented a competitive team and recaptured the trophy convincingly. At the top end were Peter Backe racing Swedish Blue, (1333); Marc Jukes with The Battler (903) and Greg Farrel steering Dream On (1269). They were first to third overall. Alastair MacAulay took 5th place in Mind the Bumps (1344); Mark Yeadon aboard Diva Deux (1193) came 7th and Richard Kendall with Suzanne Godfrey in Capoeira (1046) was 9th.

With a view to 2015 Jenny Cooper, our Worlds Event Co-ordinator, has been very busy on our behalf, attending meetings to learn from the experience of the Flying Fifteens, who hold their own World Championships later this year, and we expect that there will be a good turnout of Etchells sailors for race management duties in connection with the Flying Fifteen Worlds.

On the social side, please mark your calendars now for the annual Etchells Class Prizegiving which is going to be held on saturday 11 may, earlier this year than normal, in the Compass Room. We look forward to the appearance of the Sportsboats ‘choir’ singing ‘love Boat’ during our cabaret. Another diary date is the AGM, which will be in late April. See you all out on the water soon.

Many of us may be around boats a lot of the time but how many of us stop to wonder why a boat sports a particular name, or even ask? We have certainly been curious and have started to reach out to skippers and crew to ask them just that.

Impala 1 (impala)The road to success is long and rocky, and Impala 1 has had extensive experience of Hong Kong’s rocks during her long 33 years of racing and cruising since arriving in the Territory... notable rocks among many others are Kende’s Rock (off the end of the Kai Tak runway), Burrell’s Rock (just inside the breakwater at Kellett Island), and of course she was another victim of the infamous rock off the entrance to Hebe Haven, which could be called Dickson’s Rock after one of our occasional crew members, although he wasn’t on board at the time ! And success did come... but more of that later

The David Thomas-designed Impala 28 was one of three yachts chosen by the RORC’s Offshore One-design Conference in 1977 and Hunter Boats in the United Kingdom produced more than 150 before production ceased in

Mike Burrell uncharacteristically reached for his wallet and extracted the GBP 13,948 required for a complete boat – of course, the HK$ was only 9 to the GBP at that time....

And the name? Well, as Mike’s ‘No-name’ Impala was a complete boat, it was launched immediately upon arrival in Hong Kong in January 1979 while the Cathay pilots were still glueing their kits together, so in a blinding flash if inspiration, it was named Impala 1... a later proposal to give it a proper name was rejected by the fleet... “everybody knows Impala 1” !

So after a few more trips to Manila as crew on a Maxi, Mike became an enthusiastic convert to one-design sailing – and the Hong Kong Impala must be the purest form of one-design, as the sails are also restricted, and one can’t just go out and buy a new boat however desperately one wants to win. On top of that, the design has remained very competitive under IRC until the present time.

So Impala 1 and her trusty crew have now been braving the rigours of sailing in Hong Kong and nearby waters and the sometimes excessive enthusiasm of the remainder of the Impala fleet for three decades... these rigours can be appreciated from the plaque on the signal mast at Middle Island which reads

DONATED BY MIKE BuRRELL AND “IMPALA 1”(WITH THE KIND ASSISTANCE OF A PANDORA ON PORT, AND THE HK INSuRANCE INDuSTRY)

It would be nice to think that this legacy of Impala 1 will remain there for many years to come – or at least until Pandoras learn to climb steps!

Over the years Mike (or ‘loveable Skipper’ as he is affectionately called – mostly by himself) has been joined by several luminaries as boat partners – more recently by now Etchells sailor and DRC supremo Richard Nieto, famous sailmaker (and now owner of an Impala in the United Kingtom and Secretary of the United Kingdom Impala Association), Kevin Palfreeman and presently, of course,

what’s in a Name?

1984. 24 of those came to Hong Kong, mostly in kit form.

Impala 1 was the show model on the Hunter Stand at the 1978 Southampton Boat Show, when long-time RHKYC and Big Boat sailor

Sailing Secretary Gaston Chan, who now lends his considerable weight to what is reputed to be the 300 years of sailing experience accumulated by Impala 1’s A team.

And the loveable Crew? Well despite scurrilous rumours round the bar about fiery skippers – Gaston, Dave, Patrick, Stephen and Pete have been crewing on Impala 1 for an average of 13 years each and the latter, who has survived 24 years of dedicated (sometimes!) trimming duties says it’s almost like marriage – even our two Foredeck Princesses have accumulated 21 years of experience between them, if that is the right way to put it, even though no marriage was required.

And the loveable Crew work hard – Impala 1 is arguably the most raced boat in Hong Kong, with around 75 race starts in both winter and summer series during the year, with occasional excursions to the China Cup, Macau and ABC

Regattas – all between cruising to Po Toi O for sumptuous seafood lunches and fun return trips, when the racing schedule allows.

Of course, Impala 1’s legendary Dark Rum and Coke Pontoon Soirees after racing help the crew forget the trauma of the race, even if their memories are still functional, with the added benefit that the remainder of the Impala fleet seem to have adopted the same practice, instead of soberly reviewing their performance after the race and going faster the following week, as they used to do (it is only to be regretted that some boats now rather upstage Impala 1’s simple fare by bringing caviar and other exotic delicacies to their parties).

And finally, has success been achieved, and does age and cunning really overcome the rest of the fleet’s youth and enthusiasm?

We think the answers are “yes”, and “it does seem so” respectively.

In 2012 Impala 1 won the Impala Association Trophy for the best boat of the season with 13 wins in the Impala Series racing alone, while only being denied a podium finish under IRC in the China Cup due to a DNF in the Passage Race. 2012/13 started well, with a win in the Impala Autumn Series, and close to the front in the remainder – but we suppose that the highlight of the last couple of years was winning the 2011 Top Dog Championship against all the hot boats in the Club, and showing Impala 1, with its 30 years of experience, can still compete with the newest and best !

Boss Hogg (impala)When co-owners ‘Orca’, ‘Orion’, ‘Kudu’, ‘Hippo’ and ‘Gazelle’ decided to sell their Ruffian, Skellum, in 2005 and switch to the Impala fleet, they like many new owners simply inherited and preserved the name Boss Hogg.

The Hoggies, as the crew call themselves, come from all walks of life and have banded together with a shared passion for sailing. Empty beer cans and wine bottles and dirty lunch boxes in the hull after a day’s racing are proof positive of a palpable camaraderie. Over the years, they have built great friendships and share lots of exciting memories, whether frustration or joy and happiness after competing in a tight race. Since joining the Impala fleet, they have made lots of new friends but one of their crew still had a soft spot for the Ruffians and last September married a Ruffian skipper.

As many of you may remember, the original ‘Boss’ Hogg was a fictional character in ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’, an American television series that aired from 1979 to 1985. Despite

being the wealthiest man in Hazzard County, ‘Boss’ Hogg was a quintessential schemer who would do almost anything to get his hands on more money.

Whilst Team Boss Hogg may not suit up all in white when they’re on board or win everything in the same way as the character for which the boat is named, they do however give it their all when competing with other boats.

Says Hoggie Francis Cheung, “We enjoy competing against other sailors not only in the Club’s own events but also in the Hong Kong to Macau races, the ABC Regatta, the HHYC Typhoon Series and the China Cup International Regatta. Thank goodness for a great team and our results are pretty good too! Watch out for The Hoggies and we look forward to seeing you on the water!”

JeNa PaBe (J/80)Ben Chong has co-owned his boat with the RHKYC since 2010. It was Ben’s wife, Pauline, who came up with the name, taking the first two letters from each of the four Chong family members’ first names. JeNa is for their daughters Jeanette and Natalie, and PaBe for parents Pauline and Ben. Ben is the sailor in the family and enjoys sailing very much on JeNa PaBe which he describes as “simple and easy to manage”.

Brigand (ruffian)Co-owner Jonathan Acton-Bond shares, “The name was there when I purchased the boat with my cousin 20-odd years ago and has continued since she left Hong Kong with a changing cast of co-owners (of the boat – not my cousin). I guess it seemed like a good butch name in keeping with the name of the class. To my mind changing names of boats is a shame, because the racing history of the boat tends to be lost. Maybe that is the reason; new owners don’t want either past failure or past success to haunt them. Although I can recall many failures, we have not had the

Sidewinder (magic 25)Gareth Williams tell us that the name came about when he bought the boat: “Most of the fleet seemed to have names after tunes. As my then-favourite band was REM I went for Sidewinder after the tune ‘The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite’. The design for Sidewinder ’s logo came from Andy Neilson (he of Mad Dogs and King and Country) who I trust to come up with something good each time I buy a boat.”

problem of being haunted by success. But my co-owners may take issue on that!”

Ken Borthwick, another co-owner, says, “If I can add a little to that – there was an old tradition from the beginning of the Ruffians in Hong Kong (before my time) to name their boats after different types of ruffians, hence Rascal (original name of Renn Tiger), Ragamuffin (original name for Schannuleke), Skellum (Dutch / Scottish Ruffian), Buster (ruffian-sounding name); Bunch of Five (symbol of ruffian behaviour); Brigand (outlaw), Schavuit (now Scallywag) (Dutch word meaning ‘rogue’); Larrikin (Australian Ruffian); etc.”

Nations’ CupThe Nations’ Cup returns this month with numerous nations battling it out on the water for the coveted title of first nation. In previous years there have been some fantastic costumes, funny hats, huge flags and a host of other emblems associated with the competing countries. The rules on how to qualify for a particular nation are quite relaxed – please see the Notice of Race and entry form on the website. This regatta is great fun and will be held on Saturday 27 April, so do not miss it!

Middle Island RegattaIn previous years this regatta has attracted over 70 dinghies and is held over at Middle Island. This is a great opportunity to compete in a large fleet, which does not happen too often. There is always a great atmosphere on the hardstanding after racing, so come down to Middle Island and check it out. Please see the website for all the relevant details.

RHKYC optimist and Cadet Championships

ace Officer Sofia Mascia squeezed three races into the afternoon with racing taking place in Stanley Bay. It was an opportunity for the cadets to show off what they had learnt over the past year and challenge their Sharks teammates for pole position.

Gusty and shifty winds were also complemented by a strong ebbing tide that was sweeping the boats across the course until they approached the windward mark which was in less tide closer in the bay. In the Cadet fleet there was a real mix of dinghies including laser 4.7s, Radials, 420s and 29ers - representing all the fleets that make up the Sharks Racing Squad. For a few sailors new to the Squad it was their first-ever regatta and a good opportunity to get a taste for competitive racing.

In the Optimist fleet it was business as usual for Calum Gregor who picked up a hat-trick of bullets with Sophie Tulloch 2nd and Ferdinand Heldman in 3rd. The mixed Cadet fleet was won by Sofia-Marie Mascia sailing her laser Radial, also managing a hat-trick of wins. Wilhelm Christensson and Sam McDonald were 2nd in their 29er whilst Clara Krantz and Freya Darnton were 3rd sailing their 420.

The next regatta for the Sharks is their home event; the Middle Island Regatta on 13 and 14 April. last year this attracted over 80 dinghies and was a great weekend of racing so we are expecting more entries this year!

Saturday 2 March was a grey, wet, gusty day although the 25kts of wind that was flying down the Middle Island channel in the morning disappeared by the time it came to launch the boats for the afternoon of racing. The morning’s weather did put off a few of the younger sailors but we still saw 30 youth sailors competing for these titles.

he ‘Sweep Head’ must be the most unlucky regatta in the Hong Kong rowing calendar.

This was my very first regatta after I arrived in town half a dozen years ago (and one day before I was officially on the payroll). That day, back in 2007, the conditions were rough as the boats headed out to the start and at least seven boats sank on the way to the Wu Kai Sha start of the Men’s Eights. The Club boats were badly swamped, but were able to row home due to their more modern layout with additional sealed compartments. The event was carnage and had me wondering what I had gotten myself in for.

For the next few years the race was held over a shorter course that did not enter Tolo Harbour, but the rowers longed to return to the ‘full course’. On a good day crews could train in this area safely and

the Sculling Head (similar event, but for 1x and 2x boats) has been successfully held every year*.

(*Note for the sailing members unfamiliar with rowing boats: Unlike the longer fours and eights, small sculling boats such as the single and double are almost impossible to swamp due to their shorter length and much smaller cockpits. However, they are much easier to capsize…).

This year the Rowing Association finally felt ‘brave’ enough to return to the longer course on 3 March (we might have badgered them a bit) and now had the back-up plan of shifting to the more protected short course either before the first race or mid-way through the event. A quick look at conditions off the dock was promising with the river channel calm for rowing, so everyone was quite excited.

The men’s eights set off to the start and were soon racing back down. However the area just outside the river channel in Tolo Harbour was a bit choppy. It was not quite a repeat of 2007, but two university crews sank and the RHKYC men’s eight took on a lot of water. The crew raced well to come third, but it was heavy going with a few hundred litres of ballast on board! The women’s 4- raced without incident, but did get a bit splashed.

The officials decided to take the safe option and the event was moved to the ‘short course’ for the remaining events. Regrettably the delay was significant and many of the remaining RHKYC crews could not compete. Bit of a blow as the crews were keen to race and would have done well.

Training Boats ArriveGrowth in fleet for juniors, schools and novices WORDS AND PHOTOS: JONNy cANTWEll

he demand for durable and stable training rowing boats has grown remarkably in the past ten years. Where once there were only two training singles, there are now ten training single sculls in three sizes and two double sculls. When counted with the larger four-man boats, the Club training fleet at Middle Island is only just now able to cope with the demands of the school groups.

Unwrapping any new boat is always good fun, but the builder of the training sculls – Maas, USA – makes it even more fun with their clever packaging. These jumbo cardboard tubes are designed for making concrete columns, but work very well by turning the boats into large ‘cigars’.

The Marine Office of the Club receives questions on boat and crew licensing issues on a fairly regular basis. The summary below covers a few frequently asked questions and is an attempt to demystify some of the more opaque areas of the legislation as they relate to boat licensing and operator licence requirements.

do i need a local ‘driving licence’ to operate a boat in hong Kong?A local certificate of competency as a pleasure vessel operator is required to operate any pleasure vessel (Class IV) in Hong Kong. This is what used to be referred to as the local Masters and Engineers ticket, but is now known as the Pleasure Vessel Operator Certificate of Competency (PVOCC).

does the size of the boat make any difference to the PvoCC i need? For vessels under 15M lOA you require at minimum a Grade 2 PVOCC regardless of engine size. Vessels of 15M lOA and above may only be operated by holders of Grade 1 PVOCC.

once i have my PvoCC, do i need to renew it?Your PVOCC remains valid until you reach the age of 65. To renew you must retake an eyesight test. Frequency for renewal increases with age after 65.

what are the restrictions on eyesight? All candidates applying for a PVOCC are required to take an eyesight test, including a colour blindness test. There is a minimum standard for eyesight below which a certificate will not be issued. Your PVOCC may have endorsements added requiring you to wear visual aids, or restrict you to daytime operation.

does the helmsman need a PvoCC, or can anybody helm the boat? The ‘operator’ of the vessel must hold the relevant PVOCC – this means that the person in charge of the vessel must be certified. The person in charge of a vessel may not necessarily be on the helm – but they are responsible for the safe conduct of the vessel at all times whilst

Class IV VesselsWORDS: ROgER EASTHAM

it is underway. Please take note that people under the age of 16 may not hold the helm of a licensed vessel whilst it is underway.

i am an rya offshore yacht masters. do i still need to get the local PvoCC?Yes – but you may be able to sit a reduced exam. Contact the Marine Department’s Seafarer’s Certification Centre for further information.

does my boat need to be licensed?Any pleasure vessel, of any size, that remains in the waters of Hong Kong for more than 182 days, and is designed so that an auxiliary engine can be installed – regardless of whether or not an engine is installed - is required to be licensed with the Hong Kong Marine Department. This ‘license’ is in two parts; the Certificate of Ownership (COO), which is retained by the owner, and is only changed when the vessel changes hands or there are changes in the particulars of the vessel, and the Operating license (Ol) which is renewed annually and should be kept onboard the vessel.

my boat is registered in a foreign port. am i allowed to sail in hong Kong?Any foreign-flagged yacht visiting Hong Kong may not navigate in the waters of Hong Kong unless they have applied for and been granted ‘Permission to Navigate in the Waters of Hong Kong’ from Marine Department. Such permits may stipulate what qualifications are required by the master / crew of the vessel together with insurance and safety equipment requirements.

i have a small dinghy with a small outboard. what are the license requirements?

Vessels that are below 3M in overall length with an engine of below 4 HP (3 kW) i.e. small dinghies with small outboards, may be operated by people who do not hold a PVOCC – BUT – those boats must still be licensed (and insured).

i have a tender for my yacht. how do i licence it?Tenders may be licensed as an ‘ancillary vessel’ on the same Ol as the main vessel providing that the tender is less than 4M lOA and, if equipped with an engine, that the engine is no more than 10 HP (7.5 kW). The same restrictions in terms of PVOCC apply unless your tender is less than 3M lOA with an engine of less than 4 HP.

my boat does not have an engine – does it need to be licensed, and do i need a PvoCC to operate it?Vessels such as rowing dinghies, sailing dinghies or small keelboats that are not designed to have an auxiliary engine installed or mounted are not required to be licensed. Whilst they may be operated by people who do not hold a PVOCC we would still encourage all sailors to obtain at least a Grade II PVOCC.

how do i go about getting my PvoCC?The RHKYC has recently started running courses for Grade II PVOCC. Courses are also run by the HKSF and by a number of commercial operators.

what legislation controls the ownership and operation of pleasure vessels in hong Kong? The Merchant Shipping (local Vessel) Ordinance Cap. 548 covers legislation for four separate classes of vessel. Class 1 (passenger vessels), Class 2 (cargo vessels) Class 3 (fishing vessels) and Class IV (pleasure vessels).

A Code of Practice (under section 8 of the Ordinance) lays down safety standards for Class IV vessels, and the local Certificate of Competency rules and Examination rules (under section 16 of the Ordinance) outline the rules for examination and certification for pleasure vessel operators. These documents may be found on the Marine Department website. Guidelines and forms for license application (form M.O.407) are also available on the Marine Department’s website.

Whilst this is in no way a definitive guide to the entire Merchant Shipping (local Vessel) Ordinance and its subsidiary legislation, we trust that this helps clarify some of the more common issues relating to boat ownership and operation in Hong Kong.

Winter LeagueDivision 10: The season is almost over for the Div 10 team with just one match to go and nothing to play for. Despite being only 5th, and only one place outside the finals, we are too many points behind 4th to make up the difference.

Division 15: The team is firmly positioned in 10th position (out of 10), the promising start to the season having slipped away with too many players missing to travel and injury. There were some highlights though, the following match among them. First batting was Romain Chatte who nonchalantly expedited his opponent 3-0, then Yannick Kennel did the same with his 3-0, (in my humble opinion I believe we should select more French on this team). Darren was up against a serious contender with the look of a professional squash player and an age of 19 years to match. He made a good stand but went down 3-0. Then it was Bob’s turn and

February, with only B and C getting a decent amount of games in. More games were played in March, with the winter leagues winding down.

Box A: Romain Chatte topped Box A, but with only 2 wins from 2 games does it really count? Frank Eggmann and Jono Chamberlain moved up from Box B in March while past winners Andrew Sullivan and Paul Denham returned. Frank Eggmann has made it through to Box A undefeated since he joined the league in December so we look forward to seeing how he does this month. Darren Sugden stays in A while Sander Holman is taking a break.

Box B: Frank Eggmann finished top with 20 points and Jono Chamberlain came second with 16. Cam Alder got third with 15 and keeps his spot in B and has been joined by Chris Kaye and Bob Ikin, moving down from A; Stefan Kracht and Yannick Kennel coming up from C; and the ever-dangerous Francis Longuepee who has returned from a break.

Box C: Stefan Kracht got top with 15 points from 3 games and Yannick Kennel got second with 13. Angelo got 3rd with 9 points and stays in C as well as Roger Dunn who stays up after a countback with Mark Galloway. Angelo and Roger will be joined by Andrew Moore coming down from B, Angus Stewart moving up from D and the returning Chris Brookes who will take some beating in this box.

Box D: Angus Stewart finished top, but again with just 2 wins from 2 games he was able to do it without too much work.

Box E: Here is a question for the philosophers out there. If there is a box and a game doesn’t get played, is there a really a box? Feel free to reply Peter Cheung, Denis Martinet, William Drake and Bruce Hut.

A dinner was held in the Ward Room in memory of Martin Wilcox, attended by his Wife Margot, sons Rhys, Antony and Jonathan, and members of the Squash Section. Martin was a great competitor and friend and is sorely missed.

he won without much effort but had to explain the rules to the referee a couple of times. The last match was for Angelo, and that was rather entertaining and very close: he was tenaciously ahead on the first two games but his opponent then got some rather good advice from the 19-year-old pro and reversed the trend at 2:2. The 5th game was on, tight, trench warfare style, muddy in the corners, but it was no ANZAC day and Angelo lost by a tiny 2 points on the last game. So all in all a 3-2 victory makes for a pretty good night!

Master 3B: the M3 team is on target to make the finals for the first time in a few years. Sitting in 4th, 12 points ahead of 5th and with just 3 matches to go, we should be able to make it easily (not to put any pressure on).

Internal LeagueIt looks like the Chinese New Year and the Loh Bah Goh got the better of most boxes In

superyachts – Enlarged yacht or small ship?

The increasing size and complexity of the modern superyacht is continually pushing the boundaries of traditional yacht architecture. large yachts are now akin to small ships and the naval architecture, engineering and procurement of such vessels demands increasing levels of advanced engineering. James Roy, director of leading superyacht naval architects BMT Nigel Gee, will offer some insight into the opulence, design and technology behind these vessels, together with an overview of the state of the superyacht industry and market.

obituarytEKi dalton…a life well sailedWORDS: PAUl DAlTON

News of the passing of Teki Dalton at age 76 in Sydney has been received with sadness. For many years Teki visited Hong Kong and taught the Safety at Sea course and was well-known to generations of blue-water sailors. His knowledge and experience did much to raise the standards of our sport and he will be remembered with kindness.

Teki was a bookseller by profession and for many years owned Daltons Books in Canberra while racing his yacht Nadia from the CYC in Sydney; his crew was often to joke they were the fastest inland racing boat. He increasingly became committed to improving yachting safety and published Safety at Sea, which became the standard handbook for national waterborne activities. He was an Australian Sea Safety instructor and acknowledged authority around the globe.

His experience was well tested in the 1993 Sydney to Hobart Race when as the navigator /radio operator of a 35 footer, the skipper was swept overboard following a knock-down. By seamanship of the highest standard, Teki’s efforts were rewarded with the skipper being located and rescued after five hours in the water.

Teki inaugurated and organised the Gallipoli Rally for cruising yachts that visited the Turkish coast to commemorate ANZAC Day – he was a firm believer in the love of sailing bridging nationalities and racial divides.

Over the years he was a prolific correspondent in all matters connected with yachting, and was the yachting correspondent for the Canberra Times for over ten years. It did not matter if it was laser racing or the Americas Cup; he had a view and was writing to the very end. He fought a tenacious battle against cancer and was a supporter of the Australian Kidney Foundation. He leaves his second wife Elaine, four children and nine grandchildren.

Memories of Middle Island in 1970

ecently Bill Clymer, age 75, emailed us from central Oregon. He wrote that he was a member in 1970 when he worked at the US Navy Purchasing Department of the US Consulate at the China Fleet Club. He went on to say that some of his best memories are of the RHKYC and he attached a few photographs from that year. The photos were of Middle Island, and in return, he asked us a favour – to find newspaper clippings surrounding a rowing event in which he participated – the two-day Interport Regatta between the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the Royal Air Force Singapore, held in May 1970. We’re happy to say we held up our end of the bargain and Bill wrote back with a few more photographs and said, “Thank you so very much. You may not know this yet, but as the years pass, a golden memory hangs in there. I came from the mountains of Oregon, I went back to a shipyard, but for one afternoon I was with the chariots of fire.” Thank you for sharing your photos with us Bill.
