marching activities along with everything else. Be sure and cordially greet him with his lady as we are very appreciative of his involvement with our unit.

Also our most reliable drummer “Fast Eddie” Huster needs to be acknowledged of our gratitude as he made a multitude of trips from Sac City just to hone us a little sharper, by doing the marching routine for the CSSA competition. Thank You Eddie and you too Shirley for being there.

Last month the X’s Baseball game and tailgate event I definitely will declare a huge success. We had 35 people attend, as Dwight Dirks and President Patrick Jensen manned the grills. The brats were scrumptious while the refreshments were nice and cool. PP Jim Diamond’s Grandson had the honors of throwing out the baseball to start the game. The weather cooperated while the X’s blew the game wide open with a 13 to 1 victory. This, of course, made our cheering section slightly bored. It didn’t take long for several to come up with better things to do. Like yelling out a name, wave at anybody, and see how many will respond to their actions. As you can see, it doesn’t take much to entertain us foot patrollers. Thank you President Patrick for the great successful planning of this event.

The August 2nd Dakota Thurston Parade in So. Sioux City, had great weather conditions once again as we were able to march down Dakota Avenue in style. The crowd was very receptive, while the kids still enjoy our high fives. Why even the WHMP’s Rich Porter gave us, believe it or not, a compliment. He stated that on how professional we appeared since we went back to wearing our regular Slacks. Thank You Rich, we appreciated that. By the way, what was this that as the WHMP proceeded to saddle and mount up you sort of misplaced all of your riding gear?

Once we got done parading we headed back to Colin Ross’ Hacienda where we were able to dig into a great feast with smoked pork and / or smoked beef, salads with a humongous dessert table. The refreshments were not that bad either. Compliments go out to all the ladies that contributed the side-dishes to this feast. And as usual a great big hand has to go out to Colin with all his elves on how well they pulled this off. Everyone had a grand time.

A few days back while conversing with Deb Petersen as she spoke about her husband

PP Joe, apparently during his physical, the doctor inquired about his daily activity level. To which he described his typical day as such: -“ Well yesterday afternoon, I waded along the edge of a lake, drank eight scotch and waters, escaped from wild dogs in the heavy brush, jumped away from an aggressive rattlesnake, marched up and down several rocky hills, stood in a patch of poison ivy, crawled out of a quicksand bog and relieving myself four times behind some big trees.” Inspired by his story, the doctor said, “You must be one heck of an outdoorsman!” To which Joe replied

Abu Bekr News September 2018 3

“NAH, - I’m just a crappy golfer.”Even though I personally had to be

out of town for the August 5th picnic at the RR Museum I had several reports that things went very well. The drizzling rain put a damper on things but according to all that I spoke to, it didn’t stop anything as the kids had loads of fun. The only problem was with the WHMP that the Horses didn’t feel too good? We will need to get further reports on this from them.

The August 11th, Kingsley Temple Movement Parade was quite eventful as all the units congregated and the town must have swollen double in size. The wife and I were extra anxious to get there as I was told to hurry up. We then drove every block investigating the town as we were over an hour early. We finally located the Dairy Queen where I settled in with a malt and an air conditioned booth. An hour later we finally observed the Shrine units slowly filter into town. As we moved to our staging area the temperature wasn’t that bad but the humidity was up. As we found Alan Doht to tell us ‘where to go’, he stated we were directly behind the Oriental Band. We looked around for them, with no-one being in sight. Finally the Hospital Van with the float pulled up and guess what was on the float, - the Oriental band, comfortably seated on the float. Then as the parade began the van took off leaving all in the dust. As we stepped off the van was already over a block away. All these years Chris Twiford lectured us about keeping a 500 foot space between the units. Well Chris we would have had to do the 100 yard dash to keep up. Anyway as we finally got to Main Street everything came to a standstill as we began to pass the Orientals. Due to the Rats having to “show off ” their stuff we were backed up all the way. But as the Foot Patrol was caught behind the Orientals with their huge bass drum and the Big wheels ‘Vroom Vrooming’ behind us we had very little chances to none of hearing our drummer Fast Eddie. Half the time we were in cadence with the Oriental, as I then attempted to observe Sheldon and Roger ahead of me, with no-one being in sync. We finally made it to the end, saluted our ladies and Potentate Spud, as we rushed to

had the best weather I can remember for a long time) and the Oasis at the Temple was great. Then we paraded in the Dakota-Thurston Co. Fair parade in South Sioux City, which was a great parade to be in. The Oasis afterward at Marshal Colin Ross’s house was fantastic. But, never ask a pair of Foot Patrollers to fold up picnic tables. It is fun to watch them struggle and then to be asked to help - oh just how fortunate for me. Then we were at the Temple movement in Kingsley where our Temple shined in their parade. The Oasis was great also, well done ILL. SR. Spud, well done.

We were very happy and pleased to take a couple horse to the Shrine picnic and give rides to the kids -- and some grown ups. We wish the weather would have been better, we had to load up the horse a little continued on next page

early and head back for the barns. May I say, by the time we got to the interstate we were driving back in a down pour. We arrived safe and sound back at the barn and the two horse were very happy.

We have a few dates to remember, on September 8th is the White Horse Mounted Patrol SCOTTY “O” OPEN at Covington Links. Get ahold of Jim Lane or myself to get yourself or your team registered. On September 16th is the annual Wayne Peterson memorial trail ride at Stone State Park. Then we will be having the fall Pitchfork Fondue on November 10th, which I will remind everyone later.

Now on to the important business at hand. After reading the Foot Patrol’s article from last month and finding out how Horst

the Oasis. We were sweating profusely and that did make the refreshment tasted very sweet. Thank go out to the city of Kingsley for their kind hospitality. It was appreciated. The general public also thanked us all and stated that they enjoyed the Shrine very much.

On the way back home several of us stopped by at Joe’s Shed & Weigh Station, where we took in more chicken & fish & refreshment hospitality. Thank You Joe and Deb, it was Grrrreat.

I won’t dare mention on how Rich Porter’s Grandson rejected him at the Kingsley Oasis, but we will mention of his 39th birthday, August 12th. Needless to say that with all his aches and pains and tennis elbows we thought that he was MUCH older than that. Anyway, ‘Happy Belated Birthday’ to you. Allow the Foot Patrol to sing the short version of Happy Birthday to you and we still “love” you anyway!

While I’m at it we better also recognize Sheldon Menin’s birthday. Apparently Lady Rita had so much fun that night that she was worshiping those porcelain idols I was told.

If I remember it right Barb Lehmann had a birthday also. Paul Kuester will have also gotten older and last but not least Yvonne Merrill is also still holding on to the number 39. Happy belated B-Day to all!

With that, remember, Venus is the only planet that rotates clockwise. (Since Venus is normally associated with women, what does this tell you?) That women are going in the - right direction ….!

Until next month, - Horst Zittlau, Sec. / Scribe

White Horse Patrol

Greetings from the White Horse Mounted Patrol

Well, here its September and the end of parade season for us. I don’t know about anyone else, but it is always the saddest time of year for me knowing no more parades. But, then there is always next year. We did finish with a flurry - riding in the Rivercade parade (which I might say

and I where compared to the Hatfields and McCoys and Horst comparing us to puppies, well I have always thought of it as like the old cartoon characters, road runner and the coyote. Each month we take turns at being the other’s coyote. I guess being last month I was the coyote let me say this. -- No Horst I don’t play tennis, but as you could see I do know how to fold up picnic tables even with a bum arm.

I gave Chief of Staff Allan Doht a hard time after the Kingsley parade about how he failed this year at getting the Foot Patrol to follow us in a parade. As I drove home I think I know the real reason why. If we were in front of them and they were the last unit in the parade, who would pick them up after a few blocks in a parade. You know Roger, you should maybe work into your routine a cane. If you got the ones with the seat attached and maybe even the horn they would be able to rest after a long march and use the horn to signal where to pick them up at. Just trying to help out, you know being that you think the halters and lung lines would be a bit much. For those concerned -- the above paragraph is all in fun and I consider each and every Foot Patroller a Brother and friend. I am very honored to call them that. I would like to also wish them the best of luck in Branson and to let you know I will be watching.

As the Scribe for the WHMP it gives

me the opportunity to some times add some personal feelings. Over the years of having the honor to be a member of the worlds greatest philanthropy of Shriners International and this Temple, Abu Bekr Shrine, I have seen a lot of things change and have been to so many different functions. Some times I feel some have lost the reason why we do what we do (me included) and we get so wrapped up in our units we forget the big picture of seeing that we help as many kids as we can. To do that we need to all work together and always remember the real reason we put ourselves through what we do. Get out there and be seen and remind people just what we do other then what they see in a parade. Even though we may be in different units we are all Abu Bekr Shriners first and we should all support our Temple.

Till next time and happy trails Rich Porter, Scribe

Oriental BandIt has been a very busy season and we

are proud to say we have been as active as we can be with the parade opportunities offered to us by many Siouxland communities. The practice is paying off and we have been getting a lot of cheers and smiles from many in the crowd (to some surprise, I’m sure). Central States in Branson is around the corner and we are hoping to bring home the win at competition. But most of all, we look forward to the brotherhood

Wrecking CrewHello from the CrewIt has been a while since I’ve updated

you on the happenings and this won’t be a full update, but here we go. We had a great summer of parades, with good turnout everywhere we went. Thanks to Prez Pat, Jeff, Aaron and BillyBigRigger for making sure that we were there and ready to go. We also have returned the Big Toe to our parade fleet. It hit a couple of parades and was a welcome addition. The picnic was a success as usual and the Railroad Museum is a wonderful place to have it. Thanks to everyone who put in the effort to make it happen.

On Sunday Aug. 12th Rusty “Russell the Love Muscle” Langel was installed as Master of Elk Point Lodge #3 by his brother Dejay who was the outgoing Master and installing Master for the installation. Congrats to the Langel boys on their dedication to Blue Lodge.

This is about all I have heard lately as I was on injured reserve this summer and haven’t been getting out and about. However I did hear a little story about BillyBigRigger that I will convey now. BillyBigRigger passed another truck one day and when it was safe he turned on his

and fellowship we will be able to have with not only our local brothers, but with those we have connections with from many miles away.

We are also happy to announce two new additions to the Oriental Band that …. First, we want to introduce our newest member to the Oriental Band, Nathan Rolofson. It is exciting to have a new member who is open and willing to try the many different roles within the band. Second, we have started using a brand-new gong which brings a whole new and versatile sound to what was already main stay to the Oriental Band experience. As always, if you would like to know more about the band and how you could become a part of a unit with a lot of tradition and heritage, please stop in for one of our meetings, seek out one of our members, or pop in for practice!

Some of the Cornhusker ladies enjoying the parade in DeadwoodThe Cornhuskers traveled to Deadwood for the MSA convention. As always it was great

to get together with Shriners from the north central part of the US as well as from Canada. We began our stay on Thursday evening with a great parade through downtown

Deadwood. A lot of people were out to watch on a beautiful evening in the Black Hills. They got a chance to see how much fun Shriners really have when they go someplace.

Everyone did their own thing on Friday. The Chanters members performed in Spearfish in the morning and Lead in the afternoon, many of the ladies went shopping, and the guys got the chance to check out the local bars and casinos. Many just camped out in the hospitality room that was so ably manned by Noble Lee Roeber. He seemed to be on duty full time and it was the most well organized and hospitable hospitality room we have ever had. Thanks for all your hard work Lee.

Saturday morning we set out for Spearfish for another parade. Most of us got a good tour of the town as we had a tough time following directions. It was a nice parade, however, and we headed on home when it was over.

We are looking forward to parading in Thurston soon at their annual Watermelon Days celebration.

Abu Bekr Chanters Waiting for the judges to finish their critiques at MSA 2018.“Gold” was the decision of the judges at Spearfish, SD for the Abu Bekr Chanters in the

MSA chanters competition. Gold is the top award given in the competition. This was accomplished with 13 singers which was the smallest group in the competition.

The Chanters competed against El Riad Chanters and Yelduz Chanters. We credit our director, Mike Burger, our accompanist Jeremy Owens and cellist John

Mayne for their hard work and talent bringing us to a degree of excellence to receive this fine award. It has been many hours of practice and preparation.

The first selection performed was an arrangement by Andrea Ramsey titled “Tell My Father” from the Broadway play “The Civil War.” We were accompanied by Jeremy Owens on the piano and John Mayne on the cello. The second selection was an African-American Spiritual arranged by David Eddleman titled “Sinner Man.” We were accompanied by Jeremy Owens on the piano. Comments from the judges were: “The cello obbligato worked very well” and “Beautiful tenor lead-ins” on Tell My Father.

All of the chanter groups went to Lead, SD in the afternoon after the competition. We sang in the Homestake Opera House which is being renovated. It was a benefit for the Shrine Hospital. Nice group in the audience. It will be interesting to see the renovation results. It is a historical part of the town of Lead.

The Chanters also performed at the Betty Strong Encounter Center located at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. The auditorium was full. We sang a number of selections and had a good day there.

We are now getting ready to sing the National Anthem at the Morningside football game on September 22 and on September 23 we will be having our annual dinner which will be at Ponca State Park this year. Next will be the fall Ceremonial.

and it all just stops right there. Stops right there.

JFK had the famous charge by question: “…. ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.” Can this be applied to lodges, churches, and other groups? Most assuredly! A foil to this is you can’t get much back if you don’t make some investment, for example: yes – dues, learning, time, talents, associating, and so-on. Please forgive me if I approach being a little maudlin here, to me reading the Bible is a two-way proposition; it reads the reader back.

An investiture in Masonry, or any organization, will yield real benefits. If it does not then either you aren’t getting the point – or – you have picked the wrong organization. In my twenty-nine of my eighty-two years of life, Masonry has been an excellent choice for me and for so many good people; not quite100%.

But it, like any worthwhile cause,

Restaurant. September 26 will be the final Cruise of the season. Presented ideas for possible “cruising locations” for next year and will discuss in detail at upcoming meetings.

The next meeting of the Kossuth Shrine Club will be on Wednesday, September 19.

So soon fall approaches and with-it Grand Lodge and not long after that the selection of officers for next year. So, comes now the perennial question:

Soon it will be time to select our officers for 2019 – What are you willing to do?

Maybe the “Greater Algona” area doesn’t have the tribulations about getting officers. (I belong to Prudence #205 in Algona and am Master of Moingona # 633 in Polk County this year.)

All too often it is difficult and frustrating to get officers. And worse still is when names just get put next to offices –

needs engagement! This is a bit harsh, but, remember the computer programming phrase “Garbage in. Garbage out!” Garbage can also apply to too little input, can it not?

There are so many ways to participate if done with conviction. Not the least of these is attending lodge for the fellowship and friendships. Good conversation is priceless! Not all have the same gifts and talents. Being a fine ritualist and a good conversationalist are not always found in the same person. And that is okay, “copesetic,” as it were. Both contribute to the wholeness of associations. And food and committing cribbage have not been mentioned.

Cycle CorpsBoy Sheldon, you're lucky the guy that

puts this newspaper together lets me know when you skip out on your duties!!!

The Cycle Corps took over Burger Night from the Chefs Unit on August 8th. A big thank you to everyone who came out to support the unit by contributing for the

dinner and buying split the pot tickets. It took a good deal of work from several guys. Notably Roger and Colin brought their award winning smoking skills, Maylon supplied the baked beans and desert and Bernie stepped up with the salad again. Payne took care a big portion of the cleanup. Thanks guys, if I forgot anyone my apologies.

On September 8th the Cycle Corps will be dealing black jack and spinning the wheel for the Boys and Girls Club fundraiser again. This is one of our more events that we participate in. I will be calling and lining up help in the coming days. Sheldon, no ignoring my calls just because you think I'm calling about an article.

We are also starting a raffle for Henry Shriners Tribute Edition Golden Boy .22LR lever action rifle. These are very nice looking guns and go for over $1,000. Tickets will be $10 each and only 200 sold, so a great chance to get your name drawn. Contact me (712-898-9705) or another member of the unit for tickets.

I think we are done with parades for

the year, though Payne always seems to always have someone he's talking to about signing us up for something. I'll keep you posted. Thanks to the riders this year and I look forward to next year.

Hospital DadsI just took a quick look at the calendar

and what fo you know: In a few days the deadline is close, or worse, according to your point of view, I’d better hustle up something to write. I owe much to Barb for donating things to write about this time. She is good! Thank you so much! If I’m not careful, she’ll take my job away from me. Another credit, this time from Bruce Sheid,

a retired TV personality. If you read the poem titles, “The Train of Life” and better yet, liked it, then thank Bruce for sharing. There was more on the next page, a poem that brings out a lot of thought. Bruce and I have been pen pals for nine years, writing at least once a month, and he comes up with timely inputs for which I am so grateful. Thank you Bruce for you are a treasured friend.

Shrine in general, and Hospital Dads, team up to help and give kids a better life. An observation follows: “Blessed are those that can give without remembering, and take without forgetting”, I like that! Another one? Gladly, here goes – “It is

one of the beautiful compensations of this life that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping himself ”.

An elderly woman and her young grandson, whose face was sprinkled with bright freckles, spent the day at the zoo. When they arrived, they saw lots of children waiting in line to get their faces painted with tiger paws. “You have so many freckles, there’s no place to paint! A little girl said to the boy. Embarrassed, the boy dropped his head and looked away. His grandmother knelt next to him and said, “I love your freckles. When I was a little girl, I always wanted freckles,” she said, tracing

I miss making hospital trips for a number of reasons. The thought of trying to be helpful, making new friends, and the things I found for entries into the newsletter.

I would ask that if you’d care to, you’re very welcome to offer material for the newsletter. For this issue, a special thank you to Barb and Bruce Sheid.

Points to ponder – when you think you have no chance of getting what you want, you probably won’t get it; but if you trust God to do what’s best, and wait on his time, sooner or later, you will get it or something better.

A finale – If you have a great friend, take time to let them know they are great.
