Heather Moran

Ms. Moran is blessed to be musically sur-rounded with some of Chicago’s top Jazz musicians on the

scene today.

Born and raised in Illinois, Ms. Moran has been performing for most of her life. She studied voice as a child at New Trier High School and Northwestern University in Illinois. As an adult, she studied opera at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pennsylvania, and the University of Colorado. She eventually returned to Chicago to earn a BA in theater from Columbia College.

Over the past several years, Ms. Moran has divided her time between her two loves: acting and singing.

As an actor, Ms. Moran has worked with numerous theater companies in Chicago, but most extensively with the Factory Theater, a storefront commu-nity theater company in their elev-enth season with over 100 all original productions under their belts. She is also a Second City alumna skilled in improvisational theater.

Damian EspinosaMr. Espinosa is a critically acclaimed pianist, arranger and composer living in Chicago. He holds degrees in piano performance from Creighton Univer-sity and a Masters in Composition from the University of New Mexico. Since moving to the windy city in 2000 he has played piano in many diverse musical settings as both a jazz leader and as sideman, as a solo pia-nist, accompanist, for stage produc-tions, operas, Second City, and even for a silent film. He is also featured on several recordings. Damian currently leads 2 groups: the Damian Espinosa Trio and the Atrevido Latin Jazz Band. He is also a member of the Chris

Greene Quartet and plays with vocal-ists Heather Moran and Myles Hayes.

Myles HayesOriginally from Mequon, Wisconsin, Mr. Hayes studied vocal performance at Texas Christian University. After a brief time in New York City he returned to Texas to focus his efforts on jazz. Performing in various venues, Myles focused on such influences as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darren, Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole. He then recorded his first album entitled “Empty Tables” in July 0f 2005. In 2006 he founded “The Moondevils”, with whom he toured throughout the country, and then with them recorded his next album entitled “Night & Day” in 2007. Now based in Chicago, Illinois Myles Hayes founded “The Myles Hayes Quintet” with whom he has performed at venues through-out the region and recorded with at Columbia University. He has studied under Grammy Nominated Typhonie Monique, and is currently composing originals of his own for his next solo al-bum. As a musician constantly striving to perform at his best, Myles “…really blows the audience away” (Broadway-world.com), and “brings new life to the standards of the Sinatra and Nat King Cole era by invoking [his] own unique style representative of a new genera-tion of progressive jazz” (Fort Worth Star Telegram). His enthusiastic pres-ence and care-free charisma personify the legacy of his jazz predecessors. And just like Sinatra, you’ll never forget the first time you hear Myles Hayes.

Jeffery Lien Mr. Lien is a multi-faceted drummer and educator. A dedicated musician since childhood, Jeffrey has been performing to audiences throughout the United States and abroad for the past 21 years. Upon receiving a merit-based scholarship to Berklee College of Music in 1999, Jeffrey moved to Boston, MA where he worked to develop his musi-

Page 12: OAC-Dec

cal skills studying with such luminaries as John Ramsay, Joe Hunt, Bob Kaufman and Walter Beasley. While on the east coast, Jeffrey performed with Hiromi Uehara, Chie Imaizumi, Esperanza Spaulding, Nir Felder, Ian Rapien, Marco Panascia, Remember Rockefeller, Walter Beasley, Pablo Picker, Beth Boucher, and Mike Murray among many others. In 2005, Jeffrey toured with Geffen Re-cords artist Rich Price opening for the Ben Taylor Band.

Since moving to Chicago in the fall of 2006, Jeffrey has quickly become in-demand as a jazz and rock drummer in the city’s vibrant scene. Jeffrey has performed throughout Chicago with Gordon Wright, Damian Espinosa, Marc Piane, Myles Hayes, Heather Moran, Dan Nicolson, Scott Anderson, Nick Mazzerella, Dan Effland, Scott Burns,

Eric Koppa, to name just a few. Jeffrey is currently finishing up his debut solo CD, due out in March 2011.

Marc PianeBassist/composer Marc Piane came home to Chicago after being at Knox College under the instruction of Scott Garlock and Earl Gately. He has since played and recorded with talents throughout Chicago. He co-founded and co-directs the Summer Lab On Stage program, a musical theater program for 5th-8th graders, at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. He also teaches privately at the Chicago Center School of Music. He spends his free time going the park with his son and his daughter. His love of jazz and black coffee runs deep, and consequently, he rarely sleeps.

Frederick “Doc” Heide – PlaywrightDoc is co-founder, first board president, artistic advisor, play-wright, and perform-er with American

Folklore Theatre. A Wisconsin native, he has co-authored 20 musicals includ-ing Guys & Does, the long-running hit comedy Belgians in Heaven, and the science-fiction football musical Packer Fans from Outer Space (the latter two with Lee Becker and James Kaplan). His three CD’s include Christmas in Door County with Memphis string wizard Eric Lewis. Doc is associate professor at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in San Francisco, where he won both the Master Teacher and Teacher of the Year awards, and also teaches postgraduate courses at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He has published in Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Psychology Today, Psychophysiology, and elsewhere. He dedicates his work on tonight’s show to his dearest deer, Jody.

Lee Becker – Play-wright & Duane PuddlesA Dairyland na-tive, Lee began his professional career in the late 80’s with

ComedySportz-Madison before moving to New York City to help found Come-dySportz there, as well as perform some Shakespeare. He returned to Wisconsin and began working with American Folklore Theatre in 1994. Since then he has performed in over 30 AFT produc-tions, including Belgians in Heaven and Packer Fans from Outer Space both of which he also co-wrote with Doc Heide. Favorite roles there include DNR Doug, Mildred the Chicken, and Ernie the Moocher from Guys On Ice. When not in Door County, Lee has performed with Milwaukee Rep, Madison Rep, Skylight

Opera Theatre, Door Shakespeare, Com-edySportz and First Stage Children’s Theatre. Lee would like to thank his Uncle Reed, Uncle Bob and Cousin Mark for sharing their deer hunting know-how, and he dedicates tonight’s show to his beautiful bride, Sara.

Paul Libman – ComposerThis is Paul’s first collaboration with AFT founder and playwright “Doc” Heide. Paul (member, Dramatists Guild and ASCAP) and writing partner Dave Hudson have written a new musical in each of the six years they have worked together. They are the only two-time winners of the Richard Rodgers Award and also have had three of their musicals honored with performances at the Stages Festival at Theatre Building Chicago. Their shows include Muskie Love (AFT 2004, 2005), A Cabin with a View (AFT 2007, 2008) and Main-Travelled R oads (AFT 2007). Paul dedicates this season to the loving memory of his father and biggest fan, Milt Libman. He thanks his wonderful family and especially, Marcia.

Doug Mancheski – Joe Jimmy & Staghart of the Golden HornsDoug has been performing with American Folklore

Theatre since 1997. He is perhaps best known for portraying the role of Marvin in Guys On Ice, the ice-fishing musi-cal, for over 600 performances. Other favorite AFT shows include Lumberjacks In Love (Dirty Bob), The Bachelors, Loose Lips Sink Ships, Muskie Love and Guys & Does. He has performed in Wisconsin with Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Madison Repertory Theatre, Milwau-kee Chamber Theatre, Peppin Players, Door Shakespeare and Third Avenue Playhouse in plays including, Three Days of Rain, Tuna Christmas, Present Laughter, Heartbreak House, Love Letters, Our Town and The Good Doctor. Before

Page 17: OAC-Dec

moving back to Wisconsin, the Green Bay native acted in many productions in New York City, off-Broadway, includ-ing many improvisational comedy acts. He has studied acting with many icons of the acting world including Paul Sills, Uta Hagen, David Mamet, and Mike Nichols. He graduated from New York University’s graduate professional actor training program. His one-act play, O-1-1, premiered last May at the 8th An-nual Northwoods Playwrights Festival. He dedicates his performance to the beloved memory of his mother, ‘Dottie.’ He is sure she is sitting in the first few rows smiling with pride from ear to ear. Keep the faith.

Bo Johnson – Fritz DingleheimerIn December of 1982, Bo graduated from U.W. Eau Claire. The very first professional job he got after

graduating was as a story teller, singer, and guitarist in a couple of small shows that toured to schools in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. The company that produced the shows was based out of the U.W. Madison extension and was run by a man named Dave Peterson. The company’s name was Heritage Ensemble. A few years later, Heritage relocated to Door County and changed its name to American Folklore Theatre. Bo, meanwhile, continued to work as a professional actor in the Milwaukee theatre community. And now Bo is really very, very pleased to be able to come back to work for the company that gave him his professional start, not to mention what a joy it is to be in a show that was co-written by his roommate of 12 years and true brother, Lee Becker. Actually being on stage with Lee and Doug ain’t bad either.

Jeffrey Herbst – Director & AFT Artistic DirectorJeffrey Herbst has been Artistic Director for American Folklore Theatre since

B IOGR APHIES (c o n t.)

1993. He has worked on forty-seven original productions with AFT since 1991 including Guys & Does, Guys on Ice, Lumberjacks in Love, Belgians in Heaven, Packer Fans from Outer Space and Bone Dance. Mr. Herbst was instrumental in developing AFT’s New Works Program and the Fred Alley New Musical Fund, nurturing writing teams in bringing an original work from “the page to the stage.” Mr. Herbst has an MFA in Acting from the Asolo Conservatory and has performed on and off Broadway, as well as at regional theatres throughout the United States.

Kyle Nelson – Musical Director & MusicianHaving relocated to Chicago in 2009, Kyle spent over 25 years in Minneapo-lis/St Paul working as a music director, pianist, conductor, and voice teacher. He has been on the artistic staff for over 40 musical productions including the world premieres of Church Basement Ladies and Church Basement Ladies 2-A Second Helping and national tours of A Christmas Carol and Babes In Toyland, all for Troupe America. He has conducted pit orchestras for over a dozen productions including West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, and Oklahoma. At Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, Kyle studied oboe with James Caldwell and voice with Howard Hatton. Pres-ently, he is working as a freelance musi-cian in Chicago.

Jim Maronek – Set DesignerJim Maronek has designed scenery for ten AFT productions, he thinks, as well as their new permanent stage. His Door County work also includes The Christmas Schooner. He has designed maybe thirty sets for the Peninsula Players since he began his career there in 1950. He is now on their Board of Directors and helped to replace their theatre, which was nearly as old and creaky as he. This season, he will be designing A Little Night Music for the

Peninsula Players. Otherwise, with his wife Carole, he operates Russian cottage rentals and his fine art gallery at Silver Poplar Studios in Ellison Bay. His credits, including The Goodman Theatre, number over 250 designs that have been exhibited internationally. He is Professor Emeritus of The Theatre School of DePaul University.

Dave Alley – Technical Director & Lighting DesignerThis is David’s 20th season overseeing AFT’s technical operations. He has been AFT’s resident lighting designer since 1990, Outside of AFT, David works as a live sound and recording engineer in addition to doing lighting and sound design work for other local theatres.

Chris Tisone – Stage ManagerChristopher N. Tisone is delighted to be returning to Guys & Does after stage managing AFT’s successful Green Bay engagement in 2009. Past AFT credits include, Cheeseheads, the Musical, Bone Dance, and the world premier of Life On The Mississippi, in Door County this past summer. Chris would like to thank the entire AFT gang, for bringing him “up nort” and making him part of the fam-ily. Chris is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association.

Neen Rock – Production Stage Man-ager & DesignerNeen Rock has designed and con-structed costumes, sets and props for numerous AFT productions over the years. Since 1999, she has served as AFT’s Production Stage Manager for their summer and fall seasons. In AFT’s off-season, Neen resides in Madison, WI, where she works as a freelance stage manager and as a member of IATSE Local 251. Neen wishes to thank her parents and family for their constant love and support.

Colin Welford – Musical SupervisorColin Welford hails from England. He studied at Oxford University, The Royal

College of Music, University of Miami and Columbia College, Chicago - in Music History, orchestral conducting and film scoring. Colin’s diverse musical roles range from conducting at the English National Ballet, to Music Super-visor of the Broadway musical The Lion King worldwide. He was Music Director of Wicked in Chicago, and is currently conducting Billy Elliot.

Dave Maier – AFT Managing DirectorThis is Dave’s third year with AFT and his first as Manag-ing Director. After graduating from

the American Conservatory Theater Advanced Training Academy in San Francisco, Dave joined the A.C.T. acting company as an Equity actor, eventually assuming additional roles as conserva-tory trainer, literary coordinator, and stage director.
