Monday 28th March
Largest entry of sheep with lambs at foot forward of the
season to date with over 200 lives forward. A busy ringside of
buyers especially considering the dreadful weather over the
weekend. Buyers continue to look to purchase powerful ewes
with strong lambs. The highlight of the day’s sale was Texel
ewes with strong Texel lambs from Matthew Heap of Burns
Farm sold to £240. Texel shearlings with Beltex x lambs sold
to £212 from the Woods Family of Dutton. Continental
shearlings with twins sold around the £180 mark with
continental shearlings and Beltex singles selling to £142.
Trade for aged Mule ewes with lambs trade depended a lot on
the quality of the outfits with strong Mule ewes and Texel twins
selling to £168 from James Burr of Quermore. A market
average of £56 per life.

A smaller entry of Prime Hoggs forward today with it being the bank holiday. As seen up and down the country last week trade less than two or three weeks ago. Heavy weight Hoggs from Andrew Butler sold to £91. Hoggs weighing between 39 and 45kg sold to an average of 173ppk with a market average of 169ppk. Commercial well fleshed continental hoggs still selling around 190ppk.

Friday 25th March The Easter bank holiday weekend had a reduced entry of Store Cattle forward although the bank holiday having no effect on the trade with a full ringside of buyers present looking to purchase cattle. A consignment of continental bullocks from David Moorhouse of Natland sold to a top price of £1240 and others over £1200. Native cattle always good to sell at Lancaster with Angus bullocks selling to £1190 from SJ Brass of Ingleton. Young grazing cattle was easier to sell today with grass day ever creeping closer and more buyers around the ring looking to purchase younger cattle.

The sale of OTM Cattle had a reduced number forward with the bank holiday weekend and many large companies not looking to purchase cattle. A handful of cattle forward saw black and white cows sell to 124.5ppk from H Halhead & Son of Nether Kellet.

The monthly Stirk sale saw a big entry with 78 stirks forward. Topping the sale was John Gorst of Quernmore with a nice 10month Angus Bullock selling to £630, selling to Messers Morley, Whitby. A nice entry of Blues from Anthony and Lindsey Gardner, also of Quernmore, topped at £600 and £615. Montbelliardes to £490 from Steve Mason, Birkland Barrow, Mont Bullocks to £460 from PS & H Eckersley, Mellor. Friesians to £340 from Jones Sandvilla, others to £320 from Jim Lund, Ingleton. On the whole, Friesians a bit harder to place, with the best sorts £235-£295.
Only a hand full of Calves and many more could have been sold. Friesians to £152 from Drinkall Bros and £150 from Wallbank Farms. Angus bulls to £280 from the same home.

The weekly sale of Calves was mainly made up of black and whites with young beef calves. Black and whites saw good rearers at a month old between £70 and £100 . Beef calves saw young calves at a month or younger selling in the mid two hundreds.
The end of season sale of Store Hoggs as to be expected had a very mixed entry forward. There was a brisk trade with better well fleshed short keep hogs in the seventies with plenty of continental selling around the sixty pound mark.

The dreadful weather at the moment is making many buyers and potential buyers extremely cautious. Splitting families with old ewes and lambs continue to be in strong demand and easily sold, with young sheep and shearlings difficult to sell, as many buyers busy lambing and waiting on grass before entering the market. Aged Texel ewes with twin lambs sold to £170 from Tom Beaty of Troutbeck.
A smaller entry of Prime Hoggs forward sold to a better trade then expected with a market average of 185ppk with 39kg-45kg hoggs averaging 192ppk. Fed hoggs and well finished hoggs continue to be good to sell with in specification continental hoggs regularly achieving 200ppk plus with better types achieving 220ppk. Heavy weight hoggs regularly selling around the one hundred pound mark topping at £106.50 from AW Crowe of Ashtree Cottage. A good entry of 30 Spring Lambs forward at J36. More could easily have been sold, with a busy ringside of buyers and local butcher buyers looking to purchase spring lambs. A market average of 287ppk topping at 305ppk for a trio of Charollais lambs from JA & R Geldard & Son of Low Foulshaw. The trade was topped at £138 from AR Gray of Lanark with a Charollais lamb.

Trade for Cull Ewes at J36 this week was considerably sharper than the previous week, with the best ewes in excess of £120, with plenty of others over £100. Topping the sale was E & J Postlethwaite, Old Hutton, with a Texel ewe selling to £132, others to £130 from JR Wilson, Selside. Beltex from M E Wannop & Sons, Heaton to £131. Mules sold to a top of £93 from R Gibson & Son, Kendal and JN & DJ Bowes, Crook. Majority of Mules sold between £81-£88, with the best over £90, to average £81. Hill bred sheep saw Swales sell to £76 from DE & J Waine, Longsleddale. Best Swales over £55 and an average of £57.95. Roughs to £88 from CP Bateman, Docker, and Cheviots to £112 from AR & CA Fawcett, Gosforth. All ewes forward averaged £78.44.
