4 Truck Convoy 2012 Friday, November 30, 2012 - VICTORIA NEWS • OAK BAY NEWS • SAANICH NEWS • GOLDSTREAM NEWS GAZETTE • PENINSULA NEWS REVIEW A t any other time of the year, having an endless convoy of trucks roll by your front door might inspire a call to your local town hall. But on Saturday, Dec. 1, you can hang up the phone and be entertained as the annual Island Equipment Owners Asso- ciation Truck Light Convoy winds its way through the streets of the Capital Region. This year marks the 14th anniversary of the convoy — an event that has become a traditional kick-off to the Christmas sea- son — and the 14th consecutive year that organizers have accepted food donations to the Mustard Seed Food Bank and West Shore Christmas Hamper Fund. Over 80 gravel trucks, flat beds and the like, normally seen on the road and construction sites, will be decked out in their season’s best with garland, twinkling lights and costumed riders to help usher in the festive season. The convoy will leave Ogden Point at 5:45 p.m. and follow a 35-kilometre route down Dallas Road to Oak Bay. Returning to down- town via Oak Bay Avenue and Yates Street the trucks will head out Douglas Street to the Trans Canada Highway and on to Western Speedway, where they are expected around 8:45 p.m. and will remain on display through- out the evening. Equipment owners from all throughout the Capital Region will be participating. One main- land company will join in. Ed Lande Trucking of Vancouver has been making the trip over every year since the convoy’s inception. Police departments from Oak Bay, Victo- ria, Saanich and West Shore RCMP will join forces to escort the convoy and ensure the safety of onlookers and truckers alike. “We really do appreciate the help given to us by our local police forces,” says event orga- nizer, IEOA Manager Laura Brewer. “We couldn’t hold the convoy without them.” Aside from a couple of older-model “collector” trucks, many of the units are working trucks. “When you see the incredible amount of work that these guys put into decorating their trucks, it’s really awesome,” Brewer adds. But the convoy is more than a daz- zling display of pretty lights. It serves up a reminder of what Christmas really means. “As the convoy gives to the com- munity, so should the community give to each other, especially the less fortunate,” Brewer says. “Last year, we collected over 10,000 lbs. of food for the Mustard Seed and Christ- mas Hamper Fund,” Brewer says. Non-perishable food items can be dropped in collection bins at Ogden Point, Western Speedway and at various points along the convoy route. At any other time of the year, having an endless convoy of trucks roll by your front door might inspire a

call to your local town hall. But on Saturday, Dec. 1, you can hang

up the phone and be entertained as the annual Island Equipment Owners Asso-ciation Truck Light Convoy winds its way through the streets of the Capital Region.

This year marks the 14th anniversary of the convoy — an event that has become a traditional kick-off to the Christmas sea-son — and the 14th consecutive year that organizers have accepted food donations to the Mustard Seed Food Bank and West Shore Christmas Hamper Fund.

Returning to down-town via Oak Bay Avenue and Yates Street the trucks will head out Douglas Street to the

Trans Canada Highway and on to Western Speedway, where they are expected around 8:45 p.m. and will remain on display through-out the evening.

Equipment owners from all throughout the Capital Region will be participating. One main-land company will join in. Ed Lande Trucking of Vancouver has been making the trip over every year since the convoy’s inception.

Police departments from Oak Bay, Victo-ria, Saanich and West Shore RCMP will join forces to escort the convoy and ensure the safety of onlookers and truckers alike. “We really do appreciate the help given to us by

our local police forces,” says event orga-nizer, IEOA Manager Laura Brewer. “We couldn’t hold the convoy without them.”

Aside from a couple of older-model “collector” trucks, many of the units are working trucks. “When you see the incredible amount of work that these guys put into decorating their trucks, it’s really awesome,” Brewer adds.

But the convoy is more than a daz-zling display of pretty lights. It serves up a reminder of what Christmas really means. “As the convoy gives to the com-munity, so should the community give

to each other, especially the less fortunate,” Brewer says.

“Last year, we collected over 10,000 lbs. of food for the Mustard Seed and Christ-mas Hamper Fund,” Brewer says.

Non-perishable food items can be dropped in collection bins at Ogden Point, Western Speedway and at various points along the convoy route.

Everyone is invited to gather at Western Speedway for the conclusion of the event.

Admission to the Speedway is by cash or non-perishable food item.

Coffee, hot dogs and hot chocolate are available by donation.

With his lanky build and trucker’s cap, Nirmal Johal doesn’t look much like old Saint Nick, but that didn’t stop him from dressing up in a Santa suit and driving around in his rig a few years back handing candy canes out to kids. “I love Christmas. It’s cool. It’s the kid in me I guess,” shrugs the Langford contractor who founded the

Truck Light Parade. “After that I phoned a buddy with a second truck and he said it sounds like fun, and we ended up getting 12 trucks the fi rst year. Industry suppliers were next to come on board, and before long the Truck Light Parade took on a life of its own, says Johal, noting the event has collected around 118,000 lbs of food donations and $20,000 in cash donations since its inception eight years ago, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to local food banks. Johal grins with pride when he sees what has become a West Shore tradition that attracts onlookers and supporters from Greater Victoria and beyond. “It’s getting bigger and bigger,” he said. “There’s even people coming here from out of the country to see it. They say they’ve never seen anything like it before.”
