A tax collector by definition must focus on the small details, the little things in life. He learned to measure others with an accountant’s eye, sizing up their worth by the amount of money they earned and the taxes they paid (or didn’t.) Every day spent in his profession Zacchaeus was more despised by his fellow men, while he despised them for their monetary failings. Yet this “little-ness” didn’t stand in the way of Zacchaeus’ hunger for truth. He wanted to climb up out of his pettiness and have a clear view of God. So he climbed that tree in time to see Jesus passing. And Jesus saw the need, the empty columns in this accountant’s heart. He reached out and called Zacchaeus to take a little step, toward change, toward faith. And Zacchaeus made that little step into a big faith. He returned what he had cheated others out of fourfold and gave half of his wealth to the poor. Amazing! Consider this little man as you walk through this week, and ask yourself, “What tree is Jesus calling me out of? What step do I need to take?”

Fr. Kevin’s Cluttered Desk The virtue of Fortitude: “a quality that ensures firmness in difficulties, helps us to overcome obstacles in the spiritual life and enables us to conquer fear by placing our trust in the Lord” (CCC 1808). Fortitude is also the ability to renounce and sacrifice one’s life for another. In life, fortitude helps us to deal with the setbacks of life, the little and not so little difficulties. Fear is often said to be a head game but then so is fortitude. In golf many a player will walk up to a shot that has to cross water and because there is water the golfer messes up the shot. Instead of trust in God we think more about ourselves and our abilities than we do about, “with God all things are possible.” In life fortitude helps us admit and celebrate the superior talents of other people. We all have gifts, but not always the same gifts. Fortitude is also the ability to not mock or make fun of others failures but rather step up and support them in all things. Life is filled with many trials and even persecutions. So how do we approach them? By ourselves or knowing that God is with us? If God is at our side who can be against us? Fortitude stands wearing armour, ready to go and fight the good fight, to stand for the rights of self and others. Fortitude also has a pillar beside her which represents the strength of God, her rock, her pillar. Thus, fortitude is never rash. Fortitude never just rushes in. Fortitude lives with Prudence and sees things to their proper end.

Peace Fr. Kevin
