GOODFELLOWS 2019 Big changes but still need volunteers By Johnny ‘O

There have been major changes at Goodfellows this year, but one thing that has not changed is the need for volunteers during client shopping Dec. 2 through 5.

Starting in 2015, UAW 1166 became responsible for the Goodfellows’ Christmas program. Goodfellows still is responsible for the cost. UAW 1166 member Brian West was the Goodfellows’ Christmas program director; he also was vice president of the Goodfellows’ board. Sadly, Brian died in March of an apparent heart attack. Kim Graves, Goodfellows board president, is directing this year’s Christmas program. The transition has been smooth because Kim was Brian’s right-hand person during the holiday season. UAW 1166 will continue to provide volunteers.

Goodfellows also has expanded its Christmas program. The Fraternal Order of Police asked Goodfellows to assist with its Kops for Kidz program. Goodfellows will register and verify applicants, and provide the same funding for Goodfellows and Kops for Kidz cli-ents. Police officers will shop with a specific number of children, who will be taken off the Goodfellows list. The partnership’s two main goals are to assist the police program with registration and funding and to limit duplication of services.

Goodfellows has registered clients and provided volunteers to assist the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program in Howard County for several years.

Goodfellows’ client shopping at Meijer will be Monday through Thursday (December 2 through 5) this year. It is easy to become a Goodfellow; just contact Johnny ‘0 at (765) 438-9545, or email [email protected]

Goodfellows has contributed thousands of dollars to Club Kokomo and CK’s Coyote Kids program, and for 13 years CK members have returned the favor by becoming Goodfellows and assisting the all-volunteer group in bringing smiles to needy children’s faces dur-ing the Christmas season.

Club Kokomo, Kokomo Firefighters, UAW 1166, seniors from the five Howard County high schools, Kiwanis, Kokomo High School girls golf team, and the Marine Corps League helped Goodfellows during registration and shopping last year.

Johnny ‘O asks Club Kokomo members to spend three hours (6 p.m. to 9 p.m.) helping Goodfellow recipients shop this year at Mei-jer on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Just let Johnny ‘O know what day you can help.

Last year, Goodfellows, including 20 CK volunteers, provided clothing to more than 1,100 children in Howard County. Goodfellows is the only organization that can say that all the money it receives from We Care is used to purchase clothing for needy children or fund scholarships for high school seniors in Howard County.

Goodfellows also receives individual and corporate donations. Money not spent on the Christmas program is used for scholarships and other youth programs, such as Coyote Kids. As it has for several years, Goodfellows donated $2,500 to CKRR last year.

At 108 years old, Goodfellows is the oldest Christmas gift program in How-ard County. It was started by Kokomo Tribune employees in 1911. The program now is a not-for-profit organization that is directed by a community-based volun-teer board of directors.

Johnny ‘O has been associated with Goodfellows for 49 years. He is a member of its board of directors. Johnny ‘O is proud that fellow CK member Charlie Skoog received Goodfellows’ 2008 Volunteer of the Year Award.

CK Goodfellows help bag recipient clothes or use hand-held scanners to total dollar amounts before applicants go through the cash register lines at Meijer in December.

Approved families receive vouchers for clothing. Parents will redeem the vouchers at Meijer from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 2-5. Points of Interest:

The following club members completed the Fort Ben Half Marathon on Saturday 10/5/19

Norma Hawes completed the half in 2:23:22.

Brittiani Gillem completed the half in 2:39:06

Marianne Wilson completed the half in 3:04:15

Stephen Wilson completed the half in 2:53:13

Max Elmore ran the Adams Mill Half Marathon on Sunday 10/6/19. Max said “It was a nice scenic course when you run through the covered bridge and go past the mill. There is a lot of history in that area, the community is like in a small valley. For me I started a little too fast, but around mile 10 exhaustion started to slow me up some and I just pushed through it somehow. I was wondering if this race would ever end. I finished with a time of 1:59.27. My goal was to break 2 hours and did it...It happens to be a PR for me!” Let’s all congratulate Max on his PB!!

On 10/13/19 Mat and Valerie Snyder ran the Hollywood Oceanside Half

marathon in Hollywood Beach Florida. Mat and Valerie both finished the

half with a time of 2:10:11. Ethan, Norm and Kathy all ran the 5K. Their

times were 28:07, 32:52 and 35:03 respectively. Awesome running

Snyders!

Avery Hill, Keith Hill and Ashley Shanks all ran the Chicago Half Marathon on 9/29/19

finishing in 2:34:42. This was Avery’s first half marathon her goal was to get under

2:45. Great job Avery, Keith and Ashley!

On Saturday November 19, 2019 Michelle Ludlow ran the St. Pat’s 12 Hour

Race. She completed 55.45 miles during the 12 hours time period. She finished

2nd place for females. The course is a 5k trail loop so you are never too far from

anything you might need. The profit goes to ALS Therapy Development Institute,

which is near and dear to my heart since my mom passed away from ALS in May

2013. They also offer 6 hour, 12 hour, and 24 hour times for you to choose from. So

if you are thinking about an ultra, just pick a time frame, make a distance goal, and go

for it!

Name: John Wiles

How long have you been running/walking?

I have been running/walking for 43 years.

What made you start running/walking?

I was a three-pack-a-day smoker in 1976. I came home for lunch one day and saw that my two-year-old daughter Jamie had cigarette ashes all over her face. She had eaten cigarette butts from an ash tray. I decid-ed right then to quit smoking and I soon started a six-week program in which filters gradually decreased the amount of nicotine entering my system. I also started swimming laps at the Kokomo YMCA during my lunch hour. U.S. legend Frank Shorter started the running boom after winning the 1972 Olympic marathon and placing second in the ’76 Olympics. Dave Barnes, who worked with me at the Kokomo Tribune, was a runner and coach. He ran with me and hooked me on running. He pushed me through my first race, which was a four-miler in Highland Park.

Best athletic accomplishment and why?

I qualified and competed in the national triathlon championships three years in a row in Florida in the late 1980s. To qualify for the national championships, a person had to finish in the top three of his/her age group at a sanctioned triathlon. I trained with Gary Meeks, who also qualified. The championships were held in late October and early November. To acclimate ourselves to the warmer than Kokomo’s fall weather, Meeks and I would train in Florida the week before the championships. Prior to the fall championships, we would compete in triathlons throughout Indiana, in-cluding major races in Muncie and Indianapolis, and in Chicago, Columbus, Louisville, and Milwaukee. It al-ways was exciting to experience different cities and race venues.

If you like to race, what is your favorite race dis-tance? Why?

I no longer race, but I have raced one mile to mara-thon distances; however, my favorite race distance was the Olympic distance triathlon. Participants swam a mile, cycled 25 miles, and ran a 10K. The distances were long enough to provide a challenge but short enough that you could race every weekend.

Favorite local running route?

The city of Kokomo. I live a mile from downtown, so I can start at my house and go any place in the city. I go on the trails and on the streets.

Favorite club race? Why?

I was director or co-director of three former club rac-es. They were the four-mile Pacesetter, the Oakbrook Park Six K, and the four-mile Annie ‘O Pie Run. The late Jane Hubbard, Dave Barnes, and I co-directed the Pacesetter for 10 years. The prize money, drawings, food, massages, and celebrity runners (famous Olympi-an Jim Ryun and his family ran three times) attracted the best runners in the Midwest. The Oakbrook 6K provided a cross-country course in February. One year, Cupid shot an arrow in the sky. When the arrow land-ed, the race started. Charlie Skoog named our Thanks-giving fun run the Annie ‘O Pie Run because my wife Anne would bake 15 pies Thanksgiving Eve. Prior to the fun run, I drew names from a box for a free pie.

Favorite non-club race? Why?

I liked the Indy Mini Marathon the most because the sudden change from cool to hot weather in late May made it a challenge. I was three miles from the finish one year when a police officer in a car traveling against the tide of runners announced that the race had been called because of 90 plus degrees. Of course, most people kept running because that was the only way to get to the finish line. I ran the Indy Mini Marathon more than 25 times, starting with the second Indy Mini in 1978.

Favorite post run/walk treat?

My first Indy Mini in 1978 was the second year the Mini was held. The race started at 11 a.m. on the last Friday in May. The start line was on Meridian Street just north of the Circle; the finish line was at the start line at the Indi-anapolis Motor Speedway. It was hot and there was no water on the 13.1-mile course. When I finished, I stag-gered to the track’s infield and laid down. I looked up and saw the Goodyear Blimp pulling a banner that read: “Give that man a Pabst Blue Ribbon.” I didn’t have a Pabst that first year but I did after the next year’s Mini. Alt-hough I have drunk different brands of beers since, my tradition of a cold brew after the race was born with a Pabst.

What is your favorite piece of running/walking gear?

My Ironman watch because I can track lap times for swimming, cycling, and now walking.

Do you have a running/walking related superstition?

No.

Favorite running/walking related book or movie?

“Unbroken” book and movie and “Chariots of Fire” movie. “Unbroken” is the biography of Louis Zamperini, a onetime Olympic runner, who survived 47 days on a raft in the Pacific Ocean and two years as a Japanese prison-er during World War II. His inspirational story is one of personal courage and survival. “Chariots of Fire” is a British historical drama about two young runners training for and competing in the 1924 Paris Olympics. I loved running on a beach; the instrumental theme for the movie’s soundtrack is uplifting.

If you could run/walk with anyone, who would it be?

My wife Anne. We have covered many miles and solved many problems on the roads in nearly 50 years of mar-riage. After experiencing no water during our first Indy Mini in 1978, we had Anne meet us with water every four miles at the 1979 Mini. She could do that because there were not the tens of thousands of participants like it is today. There were also no water stations at the Greentown Triathlon. The Sunday triathlon in June started at 11 a.m. with a one-mile swim in the Kokomo Reservoir. We cycled 33 miles and started the nine-mile run near East-ern High School’s football/track stadium. Anne was to meet me with water every two miles of the run. At two miles, no Anne; four miles, no Anne; six miles, no Anne. She finally pulled beside me in our van with the “Chariots of Fire” theme song blaring with one mile to go in the run. “Where’s my water,” I yelled. “I gave it to runners who looked a lot worst than you,” she responded. She then sped away in the van because she later said I had murder in my eyes.

Why did you join CKRR?

Dave Barnes invited me to join CKRR. I learned how to train and race from Barnes and the many friends in the club.

Anything else you’d like the CKRR members to know about you?

Running/walking is a great way to meet friends and improve your health. I needed solitary runs, but I also need-ed the social fix of running with a group. I encourage members not to be the solitary runner. Go to the Wednes-day night runs and races. Engage in the activities. You will be healthier mentally and physically
