Welcome to the Rose and our exciting new season of theatre, music, comedy, opera and much more.
As we bid a fond farewell to Stephen Unwin, who has now stepped down as Artistic Director, we look forward to this new chapter in the Rose’s history, to be led by our Executive Producer Jerry Gunn.
I trust there will be plenty in here for everyone, but also hope to entice you to try something new from our rich and varied programme. As there is such a wide range of choice, we have introduced the SEASON SAVER offer; see page 23 for details of how to save pounds when booking for more than one production.
Also this autumn, The Swallow Bakery will take up residence in the Rose Theatre Café with a fantastic new range of sweet and savoury delights. A unique and welcoming space, it’s a great place to meet friends for breakfast or lunch, treat yourself to Afternoon Tea, browse through the daily papers or pop in for one of our free events (listed on p 30). Just roll out the cover panel to the left of this page for highlights of our new delicious menu.
Now is the time to change and to build upon the remarkable work that Stephen has done. We look forward to welcoming you to the Rose this season and hope you are as excited as we are.

Jenny Seagrove and Sara Crowe star as best friends Julia and Jane, in a heavenly new production of Noël Coward’s divine comedy classic.
With their passionless husbands away playing golf, a mutual long-ago-lover announces his intention to pay Julia and Jane an impromptu visit. All in a fluster, there’s clearly only one thing to do: pop open the Champagne!
With each successive glass of liquid courage, tongues start to loosen, hidden jealousies surface, the claws come out, and all attempts at demure behaviour go out the window.
But it’s not until the unexpected early return of their golfing husbands that the women’s evening really hits its frenzied peak…
Jenny Seagrove’s prolific theatre career has seen her play the lead in almost every West End playhouse and she is also known to millions of TV viewers as barrister Jo Mills in the BAFTA award winning Judge John Deed.
Sara Crowe’s vast array of film, TV and theatre credits range from her role as the first bride in Four Weddings and a Funeral, to BBC’s Born and Bred, and her multiple Olivier Award successes in West End productions of Noël Coward plays.

The perfect summer’s day, and at one of the older universities solidly successful middle-aged men are getting into their dinner-jackets for a reunion dinner.
No women, of course, because in the far-off days of their youth even the passing glimpse of a woman in college was an event to remember. But everyone’s coming! Even Roddy Moore, their elusive hero. As the moon rises and the wine goes down, middle-aged men become young again, with only too predictable results. And, in the midst of the battlefield, hidden in Roddy Moore’s old rooms waiting for a quiet word with her lost love, that very woman they all once glimpsed and never forgot…
Michael Frayn is a multi-award winning playwright and novelist, best known for the plays Noises Off, Democracy and Copenhagen. Compelling, moving and eloquent, one of the great novels of the 20th century is brought to the stage for the first time. Winner of the 1987 Booker Prize, Penelope Lively's Moon Tiger is a haunting story of loss and desire.
Claudia Hampton is a popular historian, a strong, beautiful and difficult woman. Now in her seventies, she is plotting her greatest work – a history of the world. She looks back over her life growing up between the wars and remembers the people who have shared its triumphs and tragedies. There is Gordon, her adored brother; Jasper, the charming, untrustworthy lover and father of her daughter, and Tom, her one great love, both found and lost during the El Alamein campaign when she worked as a war correspondent. Against a background of world events, Claudia’s own remarkable story provokes a sharp combination of sadness, shock and amusement.
One of the UK’s most accomplished actresses, Jane Asher returns to the Rose following The Importance of Being Earnest and Farewell To The Theatre in 2011.

Propeller’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream has enchanted packed houses all over the world. In Shakespeare’s most magical play, love and illusion collide when two pairs of lovers become entangled.

This thrilling production from the RSC received tremendous acclaim when it opened in Stratford-upon-Avon in Spring 2013. Now, one of the UK’s finest actors, Ian McDiarmid reprises his astonishing performance as Galileo, leading a huge ensemble cast in this theatrical tour-de-force.
The year is 1609 and a brilliant Italian scientist is about to make a discovery that will change the world, but when Galileo’s opponents convince the Pope that these new findings pose a threat to religious dogma and may spark unrest, he is denounced by the Inquisition as a heretic and forced to publicly denounce his theories…
Perhaps best known for his iconic role as Emperor Palpatine in George Lucas's epic Star Wars films, Ian McDiarmid’s recent leading theatre roles include Emperor and Galilean for the National Theatre, John Gabriel Borkman for The Donmar Warehouse and Six Characters in Search of an Author for the Chichester Festival Theatre.

Roll up and join Hetty on her escape from the Foundling Hospital. Tremble as she faces Matron Stinking Bottomly. Thrill as she discovers the squirrel house and Tanglefields Travelling Circus. Gasp as she endures a night locked in the attic. From best-selling author Jacqueline Wilson, the tale of plucky Hetty Feather is brought thrillingly to life on stage for the Rose Theatre by award winning script writer Emma Reeves (CBBC’s The Story of Tracy Beaker) and the Olivier Award Nominated director Sally Cookson, whose many five star productions include Peter Pan, We're Going on a Bearhunt and Stick Man.

1833. Rural Ireland.
The British Army arrives to translate Gaelic place names into the King’s English. Farm girl Máire finds herself torn between the affections of the local school teacher and the love of a British soldier, between her native tongue and a new language, between the comfort of the world she knows and the excitement of foreign possibilities.
The resulting clash of cultures strikes at the heart of the community as they struggle to interpret a new language, and each other. What gets lost in translation?

Drama has always been a huge part of Italian life. The street is a stage in Italy; it presents the opportunity to create a spectacle at any given moment.
At Carluccio’s, this spirited approach makes us who we are. We’re noisy about food. We taste it, we try it, we argue about it until it’s exactly right. It’s the Italian way – and it’s how we’ve worked since 1991.
