TIGERS UP TO OLD TRICKS: TENACITY,TALENT WIN OUT BY TONY ONELLION

The LSU Tigers did their darndest Saturday evening in Houston to break Les Miles’ national record non-conference win streak. But the Tigers had too much talent for a woefully lacking Wisconsin passing game and even a thinner defensive line than LSU’s. The Tigers won like they usually do in contests like this: they wore down a lesser opponent with sheer numbers and athleticism, forcing the Badgers into fourth quarter miscues that ultimately brought LSU a win.

LSU looked ragged in the first half as quarterback Anthony Jennings could not find a rhythm. Only an 80-yard pass to Travin Dural sparked any hope that the Tigers could score against a relatively weak Wisconsin team. Penalties that only a Les Miles team gets (one each against the kickoff, punting and field goal units, a trifecta never before seen in college football) and the wasting of a timeout to get the football placed

on the left hashmark instead of the middle of the field were so…Milesenian.

But LSU found its mojo in the fourth quarter as Kenny Hilliard finally had a breakout game at running back and Travin Dural averaged over 50 yards per catch. A number of true freshmen looked good, including Trey Quinn at receiver, Leonard Fournette at running back, D. Godchaux at defensive tackle and a few more. Brandon Harris was not effective during his short series at quarterback. The most game ready new receiver was redshirt freshman John Diarse, who showed the power of a tight end and the ability to catch and run like a wideout. He is the heir apparent to Jarvis Landry with a bigger upside as a scoring threat.

The biggest disappointment was the offensive line, which was more than embarrassed in the first half. No lineman looked like an SEC player, including left tackle La’el Collins. The right side of the line was beaten like a drum and Ethan Pocic’s debut as a sophomore starter at center was less than spectacular.

The most organized group were the defensive backs. Granted, they played against probably the worst receiver corps they will see this season. But they were never beaten, never out of position and only failed when the front seven caved in and they had little if any time to react to powerful running backs coming their way.

Punting was uneven but improved as the game wore on and the placekicking was excellent except for one kickoff. Miles had a surprise with a new true freshman kickoff man, who certainly has the leg to keep returns to a minimum but needs to learn the field clock to avoid any delay of game penalties.

LSU now has three cream puffs and a slightly tougher SEC opponent to take care of before the real schedule starts in October. And all the games are at home. However, they have a lot of work to do. One, the offensive line better continue to get their rhythm together as they began to do in the 2nd half, but….NOW! Two, the experimentation at defensive tackle continues as LSU presently has no SEC quality DTs that are ready to take on the likes of Auburn, Texas A&M or Alabama. Three, except for Kwon Alexander, the linebackers still look confused and wussy. Four, tight ends. Guys, the ball was thrown to you THREE TIMES and all you did was drop a gift first down and fumble away another. Don’t look for an LSU TE in the NFL anytime soon. And five, the quarterback play needs to step up in regards to reading progressions, having pocket awareness and showing maturity and patience. Despite this: look for 5 and 0 going into October.

Deadly Advice

A DEADLY TURN - One fisherman we see on a regular basis here in Slidell is Captain Dudley Vandenborre, the designer of the “Deadly Dudley” lure series and fisherman emeritus. Dudley sends much of his product to his customers from my wife’s shipping and mailing center in the south area of the city and through the years we have come to know him and his family. Dudley recently had open heart surgery and missed most of the earlier spring speck runs in the area. We’ve been actively working with Dudley to grace our reports with his fishing knowledge since last year but pending media projects and other matters had delayed things. Until now. Dudley Vandenborre will begin a fishing feature this issue entitled “DEADLY ADVICE”. Dudley will take your questions about fishing techniques, tackle and fishing conditions and answer them. Words to GROW by! Amending or replacing backfill soil with organic materials (such as peat moss, pine bark, etc.) can create a problem with excessive water accumulation in the planting hole.

–Water while the soil is being place around the root ball to help eliminate air pockets that could dry out roots.

–Make a saucer around the plant to hold water around the root ball each time the plant is watered. This is especially needed for trees and larger containers or balled and burlapped shrubs. Do not allow this saucer to hold water around the plant continuously.

–Apply 2-3 inches of mulch to the soil surface extending 2-3 feet beyond the canopy. Mulch materials can include pine straw, pine bark, leaves, compost and cypress shavings.

Follow these suggestions and guidelines, and your fall landscape plantings will be successful.

Guidelines on Using ColorCreating an attractive, colorful look with bedding plants is easier than ever, but it’s a good idea to do a little thinking and planning before you go to the nursery, and you will generally be more pleased with the results.

Lots of warm-season bedding plants are added to landscapes in April and May to provide color through the summer months. Now, and through the summer, you can evaluate the colors you chose and where you used them. If the color scheme isn’t as great as you thought it would be, it’s only there for a season. You can always try something different next time. Here are some basic guidelines for using color in the landscape.

Combine cool colors together (reds with a blue tint, burgundy, rose, pink, magenta, purple, violet, lavender, blue, navy and any variations of those colors) or warm colors together (reds with an orange tint, orange, gold, yellow, rust, peach and any variations on these colors) for reliably harmonious results.

Use color where you want to focus attention, such as at your front door. Never use color to “beautify” an unattractive feature in your landscape such as a trash can area. You will simply make sure everyone notices it.

Generally, reduce the number of colors you use for best results. In other words, use the colors you like in combinations that you like, but don’t use every color you like at the same time in the same bed.

It is also important to plant individual colors in masses or groups, especially if the bed will be viewed from a distance (as in a front bed being viewed from the street).

Use pastel colors in area that will be viewed primarily in the evening as they show up better in low light. Pastel colors make a space look larger and more open and tend to create a serene, restful mood. Vibrant, rich colors, on the other hand, energize the landscape and can help make a larger area seem smaller and more intimate.

The large amount of green foliage that appears in the landscape makes it more forgiving of wild color combinations, but its best not to push it too far.

GARDENING CHORES ON TOP FOR AUGUSTAugust is the time of summer to catch up on all the bothersome gardening chores you have avoided doing because of the rain or extreme heat. Procrastinate any longer and your plants will suffer this fall.1. Fertilize chrysanthemums monthly. Use a balanced fertilizer at the rate of 1 1/2 pounds per 100 feet of row.

2. After gladiolus foliage turns brown, dig and store corms in a well-ventilated place.

3. Tag daylily varieties which you wish to increase in the landscape. Discard those which fail to bloom or give poor quality blooms.

4. When watering, thoroughly soak plants rather than giving frequent, light sprinklings.

5. Remove the flowers of caladium and coleus to prolong production of new foliage.

6. Order spring-flowering bulbs. Specify an October delivery date. Purchase only top quality bulbs.

7. Dig and divide native iris and Easter lilies.

8. Cut back dahlias to about one-half their growth after the first crop of blooms. The old plants will branch and produce a good crop of fall blooms.

9. Make cuttings of your favorite evergreen plants for rooting.

10. Begin grooming house plants for fall flower shows and fairs.

11. Preserve seed pods from garden an forest to use for dried arrangements.

12. Prune roses in late August or early September. Cut to 24 to 30 inches above ground.

13. Cut back old crape myrtle flower heads in back of blooms to encourage new growth and more flowering.

PLANTING FALL IRISH POTATOESIrish potatoes can be planted in Louisiana from now through about the first of September. However, the later the planting, the greater the risk of the crop being damaged by freeze.

Seed potatoes are usually hard to find this time of the year, so it is necessary to use small potatoes produced in the spring to plant in the fall. Seed potatoes for fall planting are not cut, but are planted whole. This tends to reduce some of the disease problems encountered with cut seed. Potatoes that are approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter are suitable for use as seed potatoes.

Potatoes from the spring harvest that are used for seed will have to go through a physiological “rest” period of about 90 days after digging before they will sprout, so don’t be too concerned if the potatoes do not sprout soon after planting. It will be necessary to keep the soil moist by irrigating if there is less than an inch of rainfall each week. Generally, the yield from fall crop is not as large as the yield in the spring. There are three varieties of Irish potatoes developed by LSU which do extremely will in the state. They are Red LaSoda, LaRouge, and LaChipper. The first two are potatoes and the latter has a white skin. Ask for these varieties when buying seed potatoes especially in the spring.

Seed potatoes should be spaced about 12 inches apart within the row, with at least three feet between rows. Soils of medium to low fertility should be fertilized at the rate of 6 to 8 pounds of a complete fertilizer per 100 feet of row prior to planting. Side-dress with one pound ammonium nitrate when plants are about 6-10 inches tall. Irish potatoes normally require 90 to 110 days from planting to harvest, which means potatoes planted in mid-August should be ready to dig by late November. Leave the potatoes in the field as long as possible to reach maturity. The plants will wither and turn brown. Potato vines should be removed after a frost before a freeze to prevent damage to the tubers. Dig potatoes before an extended wet period as poor drainage will result in rot.

FALL TIME FOR TREE, SHRUB PLANTINGFall is the ideal time for planting trees and shrubs. Spring is the time most people traditionally select for planting trees and shrubs, but research as demonstrated that fall is the ideal time to establish new landscape plantings. Although container-grown plants certainly can be successfully planted on an almost year-round basis, landscape establishment during the fall is recommended.

Planting balled and burlapped trees in the fall also more advantageous than spring planting.

As for why you should plant in the fall, a plant’s demand for nutrients decreases during this season, shoot growth is progressing at a rapidly decreasing rate and soil temperatures are favorable for root growth. Planting in the fall allows a tree or shrub to establish a strong root system when compared to planting at other times. Root growth, not shoot growth, should be the first priority after planting.

Prune only broken, diseased or damaged shoots at planting, as arbitrary top pruning at transplanting reduces root growth by diverting stored food back to the shoot.

In other words, pruning stimulates shoot growth. Obtaining excessive shoot growth before adequate root growth after transplanting results in a plant that has a root system that cannot support the shoot system. Of all the cultural practices for ornamental plants, the process of planting and follow-up care for several months after planting are most critical. This determines how rapidly the plant adapts to its new growing site. While the planting procedure is simple, it involves more than just digging a hole. Consider these steps as your guidelines for fall planting of individual trees and shrubs:

–Dig a planting hole two times wider than the root ball of the plant.

–Set the plant in the hole no deeper than it was growing in the container or field.

–On balled and burlapped stock, cut and remove any wire or cord from around the upper part of the ball or stem. This prevents root and stem girdling later. Pull the burlap back from the upper one-third of the root ball to allow new roots to grow freely.

–When planting container plants, loosen the root mass, especially if the root ball is root bound. This process encourages root growth outward into the surrounding soil.

–Back fill with the same soil removed from the hole after breaking apart clods and removing debris.
