Military members nation-wide confront a multitude of problems during their careers, the last thing they need to worry about is their pets care during their service commitments. Dogs On Deployment is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit which provides an online network for service members to search for volunteers who are willing to board their pets during their owners service commitments. Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, life-long pet ownership by military pet owners by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency. Join Dogs on Deployments mission in changing the lives of our military members and their pets. Dogs on Deployment aids pets of all types that belong to active duty, reservists, guard, honorably discharged veterans and their families.Our Goals DoD aims at having DoD Boarders located near all major military bases in the United States. A military member should be able to find a DoD Boarder located within 50 miles, no matter what base they are stationed at or deploying from. DoD will become a first resource for military members to turn to when they need long term boarding for their pets. This includes, but is not limited to, being recommended by military assistance organizations, base family support centers and animal shelters impacted by relinquished pets. DoD plans to increase the rights and education that pet owners have while serving active duty in the military. This includes bringing light to the problem of pet relinquishment by military members to higher levels of the chain of command, and petitioning for annual, military-wide pet responsibility training. We want pets to be considered part of the family by military regulations, not disposable objects. DoD will help promote the military-pet community by providing a database of partnered pet related businesses which support their troops through discount and incentive programs. Users will be able to search for local businesses which will provide them with affordable options for pet care. DoD wants to help qualified military members with the cost of pet care during emergencies, and/or before and during deployments in order to promote responsible pet-ownership, providing financial assistance to get military pets spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and help with cost of pet care.

SEED CATALOG SEASONIS IN FULL SWING.

With the winter season bringing cold fronts and rain showers many gardeners find themselves indoors, waiting for the next chance to get outside and start preparing for the oncoming spring. Its not all that surprising that big seed companies and other gardening mail order services start to heavily advertise their products. This can be a good time to read up on new varieties and also recollect on past decisions. Seed catalogs offer more than just a good read but they also give you more selection at a better price than shopping for transplants at the nursery later in the season. In order for you to get the most out of your seed shopping

experience follow some of the following tips to help ensure success.

When shopping for something new and different there are a couple of items discussed in the description which you should play close attention too. The USDA Hardiness Zone Map allows gardeners to view their region and determine what hardiness zone they fall into. The zones are separated by average temperature minimums. For most of us on the Northshore, we fall into zone 8b and those around the Southshore fall into zone 9b. The plant description will also tell you what type of sunlight is required for optimal performance whether it be full sun, partial sun, partial shade or full shade. Another descriptor you will see is whether or not the plant is annual, perennial or biennial. They describe the plants life cycle. Annuals complete the whole cycle (from seed to death) in one year. Biennials complete their cycle in two years and perennial plants live from year to year.

I NEED COLOR NOW!With the entirety of cool season flower talk beginning in the fall most novice gardeners find themselves at a loss on what to do after the New Year if they need to add color to a flower bed. It is also a slow time of year for garden centers and home improvement stores so their inventories are not as extensive as they once were. However, you still will find plants available just not in the biggest selections and availability. There are still two and half months left in the cool season so you should still focus on cool season flowers while shopping. Look for plants like alyssum, calendula, diascia, dianthus, nemisia, ornamental cabbage/kale, pansy, petunia, snapdragon, and viola. A helpful tip when purchasing bedding color this time is year is to buy larger sized containers so that you can maximize that late winter/early spring bloom period. This is also useful if gardeners are replacing a few plants in the landscape that did not survive the New Years festivities. The bigger plants will take less time to fill in with the other plants that were planted back in the fall. There are a few biennial plants that if were planted soon enough, would produce brilliant spring blooms. These include delphinium, foxglove, hollyhock and columbine.

LETS GROW ASPARAGUS.Eating healthy is a phrase muttered by almost everybody who thinks about a making a few New Years resolutions. Now many of us will make a change for the better some of his will fall back to the convenience and accessibility of fast food and convenient store snacks. Though gardeners of all experience levels can benefit from the rest of this article, I am writing for those who want to learn about how patience and hard work can lead to an amazing pay off. Asparagus will not produce instant gratification but with proper care, it can be done and the rewards are well worth it.

The first step in growing asparagus is finding plant material. You will find seeds available but what you really want are plant crowns. Crowns are pieces of roots that were harvested from well establish plantings. They are a form of asexual propagation which produces exact clones of the parent plant, ensuring youre getting the exact variety. Look for the varieties Jersey Knight, Jersey Giant, and Jersey Prince. These are newer varieties that show some resistance to several diseases. The next step is to prepare the bed. Start by cultivating the soil with organic matter (homemade compost or any of the commercial compost sold in stores). Work the soil down to 12 inches if possible. Plant the crowns 18 inches apart and about 6 inches below the surface. Lightly cover them with soil and water in. Once the soil warms you will start to see

spears emerge from the soil. With all of your will power, do not harvest. Instead let them completely grow about and expand to their fern like appearance. Fertilize using the general purpose fertilizer a couple times throughout the season with no applications after August. When cold weather causes the foliage to brown you may cut it to the ground. It is in the spring when the new stems (spears) start to emerge that you can start harvesting them. Limit yourself to harvesting for about 4-6 weeks and then allow the plant to grow foliage in order to start the whole growing process again. Challenging as it may be, you will be delighted upon eating fresh asparagus grown in your garden!

Tigers Signing Day PotentialStill Lacks a Major Ingredient

The LSU Tigers are approaching the February 2nd high school signing day with the number one ranked incoming football class for 2016. This, despite the loss of four-star quarterback Felipe Franks and a couple of disappointments with two Florida seniors deciding to attend other schools.

This year, Alabamas class may not make the top five for the first time since Nick Saban won his first national championship at Alabama in 2009. Alabama is usually number one or two and their track record over the past seven seasons (four national championships) partially reflects this. It is surprising for Alabama to be ranked this low, especially following its most dedicated team ever under Nick Saban and one of its greatest defensive efforts of all time.

An outstanding article in this weeks Sports Illustrated points out the myriad differences between the programs of the Tide and the Tigers. Of course, the Tide has a legacy situation following the Bear in the 60s, 70s and 80s. But as SI points out, Nick Saban approached 40-year old Houston coach Tom Herman before this season to pick his brain about a number of issues involving offensive play calling. Herman was the offensive coordinator at Ohio State when they beat Alabama in 2014s semifinal college matchup before moving on and beating Oregon for the 2014 national championship. Among the things Saban wanted to know was how the Buckeyes paced their practices, when did the Buckeyes pit their first-team offense against their first-team defense in practice and did the Buckeyes still run some under-center plays to give the defense experience with them? This, from a man who had ascended the mountain of college football excellence five times. Why? Because Ohio State played an up-tempo offense and Saban knew he had to know its intricacies in order to run it at Alabama and defend it in the SEC.

I cannot do Andy Staples article the justice it deserves. Read it, if you can. Suffice it to say, the Sabanator takes his lifes work more seriously than perhaps any other coach who ever walked the sidelines. He can be curt and off-putting, mean and direct, but he communicates. Theres that word again. Communicates. With his players, his coaches, his public, his competitors, his fans. One does not need a translator to try and decipher his words as has been necessary in Baton Rouge for the past eleven years. No, the difference in Bama and the rest of the SEC is talent and preparation but the difference between Bama and LSU is preparation, communication and adaptability. Not to mention intensity.

If this LSU class is to make the desired impact on LSU, LSU needs to make the desired impact on them. They dont need a coaching staff that dabs and chews grass - they need a coach who dares and kicks ass. And knows how to prepare. And challenge. And create an atmosphere of leadership, not just a venue for underdeveloped players to move on to the NFL where better, more Saban-like mindsets, bring out the potential in these fine young men. I cannot imagine a scenario at Alabama like the one at LSU in November. And now that incompetence has empowered mediocrity, dont expect too many major changes on the field in 2016. Stubborn verses Saban. Guess which wins 9 out of ten times? Its time to toss the old memory book and join in the atmosphere of this generations football reality. Old school is out unless it somehow melds with new school. Change or die. Or remain vanilla. And slowly melt away.

PASTA GOOD TIME

If youre watching your simple carbs intake or starting a diet that eliminates all grains, you may lament the loss of pasta in your meal regimen. However, just because you cant eat traditional pasta doesnt mean you have to give up on the noodley goodness altogether. Enter: Veggie pastas.

How can vegetables look like pasta?If you gag at the thought of cutting vegetables into thin, tiny noodle strips, have no fear. A handy tool called a spiralizer takes all the work out of turning a dozen different vegetables into perfect, stringy pasta. A decent spiralizer will only run you about $15 to $40, and many come with multiple blades for different shapes and sizes (though dont expect any shells or bowties out of these babies). All you have to do is twist or crank the spiralizer and out comes the veggie pasta.

Benefits to Veggie PastaWhile traditional pastas generally come in two varieties, white and wheat, veggie pasta comes in an assortment of flavors and colors to dress up any of your favorite pasta-based dishes. Also, vegetables come with a wide range of health benefits, from vitamins, minerals, and fiber to complex carbohydrates (the good kind!) and antioxidants.

Vegetables You Can UseYou can use a variety of vegetables for veggie pasta depending on your mood and dishs components, all of which will impart their distinct flavors on pasta dishes you love and new ones you read about. Zucchini and sweet potatoes are two of the most commonly used vegetables for pasta, but a host of others work well in different types of dishes. Try: carrot, butternut squash (and other winter squashes), parsnip, cucumber, broccoli (the stem, not leaves), turnip, bell pepper, beetroot, celeriac, apple, and ginger. The vegetable needs to be sturdy enough to be sliced by the spiralizer, but it will soften into a pasta texture once cooked.

Preparing and Using Veggie PastaUsing a spiralizer on vegetables takes only a few minutes and usually just involves cranking the spiralizer or twisting the vegetables against the blades. The easiest way to prepare spiralized vegetables is to saut them with a little olive oil or butter in a wide pan or wok over medium heat. Cook times can vary depending on the density of the vegetable, but because the pieces are so thinly sliced, it usually doesnt take more than a few minutes. The key is to cook them to the texture of pasta, but dont overcook them, as certain vegetables, particularly zucchini, can become mushy. Also remember that while youve spiralized a heaping amount of noodles, that pile will shrink as the noodles cook, so keep that in mind when you decide how much to make.Youd be amazed at how versatile veggie pasta is and how they can even enhance some of your favorite dishes with their individual flavors and colors. As soon as youve tried a delicious veggie pasta dish, you may never go back to traditional pasta again.
