RED RAIDERS OPEN EIGHT-GAME HOMESTAND AGAINST NORTH TEXASTexas Tech returns to the friendly confines of Rocky Johnson Field on Wednesday evening when the Red Raiders host North Texas in a 6 p.m. doubleheader. Tech enters this week coming off a seven-game road trip to the West Coast where the Red Raiders finished 4-3 overall to improve to 22-9 on the season. This will be the third-straight season where the Red Raiders and Mean Green (19-8) have met on the softball diamond as the two teams have split neutral site contests the past two years. This will be North Texas’ first trip to Lub-bock since the 2009 season.

ON THE HORIZONThe Red Raiders will have little time off before returning to Rocky Johnson Field Friday evening to start a three-game series against Texas State. Texas Tech will host the Bobcats at 7 p.m. Friday before 4 p.m. and 12 p.m. first pitches on Saturday and Sunday to close the series. The three-game series is the final non-conference action for the Red Raiders until opening Big 12 Conference play against No. 12 Baylor on March 28-30 at Rocky Johnson Field.

INSIDE THE NORTH TEXAS SERIESWednesday night’s opener against the Mean Green will mark the eighth all-time meeting between Texas Tech and North Texas as the two teams will be meeting for the third consecutive season. North Texas owns a 4-3 advantage in the series with wins in four of the last five meetings, including a 5-3 victory on Feb. 22 last year in San Marcos. The Mean Green will be making their first visit to Lubbock since the 2009 season when North Texas handed the Red Raiders a 6-1 loss at Rocky Johnson Field. The last two meetings between the two schools have come at neutral sites as Tech claimed a 10-0 victory on Feb. 24, 2012, in an eight-inning contest at the Texas Shootout in Waco.

RED RAIDERS LOOK TO CONTINUE SUCCESS AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE FOESTexas Tech has traditionally found success in home non-conference games under head coach Shanon Hays as the Red Raid-ers are 68-6 in such contests over his four-plus seasons. Hays boasts an impressive .919 winning percentage when facing non-conference opponents at Rocky Johnson Field. Tech heads into this week riding an eight-game home winning streak that is its longest since winning 19-straight early in the 2011 season.

EMANUEL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEKSydni Emanuel was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon after hitting .565 last weekend (13-for-23) at the Titans Classic and San Diego State Classic. She is just the second Red Raider freshman to ever garner a conference weekly award, joining Amanda Renfro, who was honored as the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week twice in 1998. Emanuel finished with two or more hits in four of six games last weekend, including a 4-for-4 performance in the Titans Classic finale against host Cal State Fullerton last Friday. The Missouri City, Texas native totaled a .583 on-base percentage and frustrated opponents on the base paths from there, stealing nine bases to bump her season total to a conference-leading 28 already this season. Emanuel stole at least one base in all six games, including two in three-consecutive games against UNLV, Fullerton and Long Beach State. She ended the weekend ranked as the Big 12 leader for hits, runs scored, stolen bases and triples. She is also second in the league with a .447 batting average and third with 62 total bases.

RED RAIDERS ON PACE TO SHATTER STOLEN BASES RECORDAfter stealing 20 bases alone during their seven-game road trip to California, the Red Raiders are well on pace to break the Texas Tech single-season record of 81 stolen bases from 2001. Tech leads the Big 12 and ranks among the top-20 teams nationally in stolen bases as the Red Raiders have taken on a new dimension this season on the base paths. Sydni Emanuel and Lea Hopson have combined for 45 of Tech’s 65 stolen bases with 28 of those coming from Emanuel, who leads the Big 12 in the category and ranks fifth nationally in stolen bases per game entering this week. The Red Raiders have benefited from additional speed throughout its lineup and on its bench as 11 different players have at least one stolen base this season. Tech is in contention to possibly rank among the best base stealing teams in Big 12 history as well as the Red Raiders need 54 more stolen bases to enter the top 10 in the conference record book.

EMANUEL ALREADY CLOSING IN ON SINGLE-SEASON STOLEN BASE RECORDSydni Emanuel could possibly break the Texas Tech single-season stolen base record before Big 12 play even begins next weekend. Emanuel has five games this week to steal six bases which would match Ashley Parker’s single-season record of 34 from the 2006 season. The Missouri City, Texas native already ranks second in single-season school history with 28 stolen bases through just 31 games. She is the Big 12 leader in the category and ranked fifth nationally in stolen bases per game enter this week.

TALLEY MATCHES BEST START TO A SEASON SINCE 2011Brittany Talley matched her best start to a season last weekend at the Titans Classic as the southpaw improved to 8-0 on the year with last Saturday’s victory over host Cal State Fullerton. The undefeated record matched Talley’s previous best start to a season from 2011 when she opened her collegiate career 8-0 as well. Talley ended 2011 with a 14-7 overall record which marked her most wins in a season so far in her career. Talley’s undefeated run came to an end Monday with a 6-0 loss to Harvard where she allowed only one earned run over the first four innings. Her 1.71 earned-run average ranks seventh in the Big 12 entering this week as she has allowed just 16 earned runs in 65.2 innings this year.

AUCOIN REMAINS AMONG BIG 12 LEADERS IN ERAGretchen Aucoin, despite a 2-1 record last weekend in California, still ranks among the top pitchers in the Big 12 entering this week as her 1.24 ERA ranks second in the conference. Aucoin is 7-3 this season in the circle and has allowed more than two earned runs just once - March 7 in Tech’s 8-4 victory over New Mexico State. The Ocean Springs, Miss. native ranks among the conference leaders in innings pitched, strikeouts, appearances, saves, and opponent batting average. Aucoin helped her cause often last weekend as she connected on her first home run of the season against Canisius before finishing with six RBI on the weekend.

CUSTER TIES TEXAS TECH CAREER MARK FOR SAVESCara Custer tied the Texas Tech career record for saves last Saturday after closing out each of the Red Raiders’ victories over both UNLV and Cal State Fullerton. Her six career saves match the school record that was set previously by a trio of players - Amanda Renfro (1998-01), Erin Crawford (2003-06) and Jule Hauck (2004-06). Custer may be joined atop the career leaders soon as teammates Brittany Talley and Gretchen Aucoin both have recorded five saves over their respective careers.

TAPIA CLOSES OUT IMPRESSIVE TWO WEEKS AT THE PLATE Over the past two weeks, few Red Raiders have been hotter at the plate than Sydnie Tapia. The sophomore hit .531 during her career-best 12 game hitting streak that ran from March 1-16. It marked the second-longest hitting streak for a Red Raider this season, falling just one game shy of Sydni Emanuel’s run from earlier this year. Tapia connected on three of her four home runs this season during that stretch while also driving in 12 RBI. She posted five multiple-hit games during the streak which ended this past Sunday against San Diego State. The Arlington, Texas native also had three multiple-RBI games, including three against Abilene Christian on March 9 which matched her career high.

FRESHMEN CONTINUE TO DELIVER MIDWAY THROUGH FIRST SEASONPrior to the season, Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays knew he would have to rely on his 11 freshmen to boost the Red Raider throughout the offense. Through 31 games, the freshmen have delivered with Sydni Emanuel, Cassie McClure and Kierra Miles all hitting above .300 while combining for 62 of Tech’s 160 RBI. The freshman class has totaled 12 home runs as well in their first experience to Division-I pitching. Hays has turned to seven different freshmen in his starting lineup entering this weekend.

It was previously the longest winning streak since the Red Raiders won 13-straight from March 12-April 1, 2012. • Texas Tech enters this week riding an eight-game home winning streak that is its longest since winning a school record 19 straight from Feb. 18-March 1, 2011. • The Red Raiders head into this week looking to snap a three-game losing streak that is their longest of the season. HAYS BECOMES LONGEST TENURED COACH IN PROGRAM HISTORYAlready the winningest coach in program history, Texas Tech skipper Shanon Hays added another career achievement to his resume during the Red Raiders’ trip to California. The fifth-year head coach passed Renee-Luers-Gillespie as the longest tenured Tech coach all-time. Hays passed Gillespie’s previous mark of 255 games from the 1996-2000 seasons as he has now led the Red Raiders in 259 contests entering this week. Hays previously passed Bobby Reeves’ 235 games coached earlier this season to move into sole possession of second place. WELBORN MAKES TRANSITION TO BEHIND THE PLATESusan Welborn was mainly a pitcher or first baseman throughout her high school career at Birdville High School in the Dallas area. Already this year, the freshman has transitioned to the outfield, starting three games in either left or right field. Last Fri-day, Welborn moved behind the plate for the first time in her career as she was Texas Tech’s starting catcher against Rhode Is-land. She earned the start behind the plate again the following day against Sam Houston State. It was the first time Welborn had ever appeared at catcher in high school or travel ball. Welborn, who threw out the only runner that attempted to steal last weekend, gives Tech additional depth behind the plate with fellow freshman Brittany Lee and sophomore Kady Crow.

FULTZ DELIVERS IN FIRST CAREER START Ashley Fultz made the most of her first career start last Friday as the freshman belted a key three-run homer against Rhode Island in Texas Tech’s 5-0 victory over the Rams. It was the first career home run for Fultz, who has five RBI already this season as Texas Tech’s usual top pinch hitting candidate. Fultz is one of four Red Raider freshmen to homer already this season, joining Cassie McClure, Kierra Miles and Sydni Emanuel.

AUCOIN RECORDS DOMINATING PERFORMANCE IN ARLINGTONGretchen’s Aucoin 2-1 record in the UTA Hilton Invitational really doesn’t show how dominate the sophomore was in the circle. Aucoin appeared in four of Texas Tech’s five games on the weekend, tossing 19.0 total innings where she allowed just one earned run while striking out 26 hitters. In the Saturday doubleheader against Illinois and Creighton, Aucoin combined for 10.0 innings, surrendering just two unearned runs off three hits. She started off the day with eight strikeouts in four innings of relief to pick up the extra-innings win over Illinois. She followed up by returning to the circle 30 minutes later to match her career high with nine strikeouts in a 1-0 loss to Creighton. Aucoin enters this weekend as the Big 12 leader with a 0.76 ERA as she has allowed just four earned runs in 36.2 innings this season.

TALLEY NAMED BIG 12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK AFTER DOMINATING OPENING WEEKENDTexas Tech senior left-hander Brittany Talley was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week this past Tuesday after her dominating performance at the Lions Classic. Talley powered Tech to its first win of the season with a two-hit, complete game shutout of Nicholls State on Friday night and then followed up by tossing 4.1 shutout innings two days later against Texas Southern. The Little Elm, Texas native was the only Big 12 pitcher with at least 10 innings pitched to not allow a single run, earned or unearned, last weekend. Talley also matched her career high with seven strikeouts against Nicholls State before finishing the weekend with 11 while holding opponents to just a .154 batting average.

JUNIOR COLLEGE TRANSFERS PAYING OFF FOR RED RAIDERSSince Shanon Hays’ arrival at Texas Tech in 2010, the Red Raiders have found success with junior college players, recruiting the likes of Logan Hall, Adriana Perez, Raven Richardson among others. Through 24 games, Tech’s current class of junior col-lege transfers have boosted the Red Raiders both offensively and defensively with Lea Hopson at second base, Kristi Belshe in left field and Kady Crow appearing behind the plate. Hopson, a College of Southern Idaho transfer, is among the Big 12 leaders with four home runs this season while hitting .281 with 13 RBI. Belshe, meanwhile, leads Tech with six multiple-RBI games this year en route to hitting .293 with 16 RBI. Crow’s impact has been felt most defensively as she has started behind the plate six times already this season. Belshe and Hopson arrived at Tech after earning NJCAA All-American honors in 2013.

#6THISWith almost a brand new roster and a slew of freshmen, it was quite understandable when Texas Tech was predicted to finish sixth in the Big 12 preseason poll. Well, it was understandable for everyone outside the Red Raider dugout as Tech quickly adopted the motto “6This” for the 2014 season. The motto should be a driving force for the Red Raiders, who after finishing 30-26 in 2013, will be looking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the past five seasons.

RED RAIDERS BOAST LARGEST FRESHMEN CLASS IN SCHOOL HISTORYIn order to get back to the postseason, Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will have to rely on the largest freshmen class in school history. The 11-member freshmen class breaks the previous school record of eight freshmen from both the 2004 and 2010 seasons. It is also the largest freshmen class in the Big 12 this season as Tech has four more freshmen then Texas and five more than Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma State. The group will be expected to not just fill a few roles but make an impact early as Tech tries to replace all three positions in the outfield along with holes at first base and catcher as well. TEXAS TECH RANKS THIRD IN WINS UNDER HAYSSuccess has been no stranger to the Red Raiders under Shanon Hays. Under the Lubbock native, the Red Raiders have flour-ished, winning 151 games in four seasons which already makes Hays the winningest coach in program history. Texas Tech’s success during this stretch has lifted the program from the bottom of the Big 12 Conference standings as the Red Raiders are tied with Baylor as the third-winningest school the past four seasons. Tech is one of just three conference teams to record four straight 30-win seasons, joining the likes of Oklahoma and Texas. HAYS AND OLD FRIEND REUNITE Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will have a longtime friend along his side throughout the 2014 season as Greg “Emo” Ev-ans joined the staff this past summer as an assistant coach. Evans, who previously spent nine seasons as the associate head baseball coach at Oklahoma State, will be responsible primarily for the Tech infield which, after setting the school record for fewest errors in 2012, struggled through portions of last season. Considered one of the top infield coaches nationally, Evans helped produce several of the top defenses in the country during his 25 seasons as a collegiate baseball coach. He will look to do the same in his first stint in softball as he inherits an infield scattered with freshmen but also with a pair of returnees in Samantha Camello and Sydnie Tapia. The Boyle, Miss. native coached Shanon Hays when he was first started his collegiate career as an assistant at Lubbock Christian. He would later move crosstown to Tech where he spent a total of nine seasons under longtime baseball coach Larry Hays, father of Shanon Hays. The Red Raiders experienced their most success in pro-gram history during that time with seven 40-win seasons and six trips to the NCAA Tournament.

CAMELLO RETURNS UP THE MIDDLE AFTER STELLAR FRESHMAN SEASONFollowing an impressive debut in 2013, Samantha Camello will be looking for more of the same this season after hitting .311 while starting in all 56 games a year ago. The Temecula, Calif. native became only the sixth starting freshmen in school history to hit over .300 in her rookie campaign, joining the likes of Mikey Kenney (2010), Stephanie Drewry (2009), Ashley Parker (2004), Sandy Butler (1998) and Paula Workman (1997). Camello, who split time between shortstop and second base as a freshman, led a powerful Tech offense during Big 12 play with a .275 average while playing in one of the nation’s top pitching conferences. She will likely be Texas Tech’s opening day shortstop for the second-straight season.

RED RAIDERS ADD PAIR OF NJCAA ALL-AMERICANS IN BELSHE, HOPSONSimilar to years past, Texas Tech once again turned to the junior college level during the offseason to fill needs around the di-amond, bringing in four transfers including two NJCAA All-Americans in Lea Hopson and Kristi Belshe. Hopson, who starred the past two seasons at College of Southern Idaho, was among the top junior college hitters around the country as she hit .431 in 2013 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI. Belshe, meanwhile, led the NJCAA with a .590 batting average in 2013 while playing for Lake Land College in Illinois. Belshe was also the national leader in hits (111) and on-base percentage as well (.645) while also ranking third in doubles (26), runs scored (94) and slugging percentage (1.005). RED RAIDERS TO BE POWERED IN THE CIRCLETexas Tech associate head coach Aly Sartini will have possibly the deepest and most experienced pitching staff of her tenure this season as the Red Raiders return a pair of veterans in senior Brittany Talley and junior Cara Custer along with expe-rienced sophomore Gretchen Aucoin. The staff will get an added boost, though, from the emergence of junior Chandler Moore, who, according to Sartini, had the best fall of her collegiate career. The four returners represent 94 percent of Tech’s total innings from 2013 and 29 of the 30 victories from a year ago as well. They will be joined in the circle by freshman Cassie McClure, the reigning Texas 4A-5A Player of the Year, and redshirt freshman Mattison Maisel.

Texas Tech is fortunate, though, to have two in senior Brittany Talley and junior Cara Custer. The two pitchers have worked the majority of innings for the Red Raiders the past two seasons and will continue to be mainstays in the circle yet again this season. EVANS ONE OF TWO NEW FACES IN THE TECH DUGOUT THIS SEASONGreg Evans isn’t the only new face in the Texas Tech dugout this season as former Mississippi Valley State assistant coach Brooke Reed joined the program this fall as the new director of operations. Evans and Reed complete a staff that includes head coach Shanon Hays, associate head coach Aly Sartini and volunteer assistant Holley Gentsch, who was promoted from a graduate assistant position into a coaching role this season. Sandy Wellman, formerly James, will replace Gentsch as the program’s graduate assistant after completing her eligibility a year ago.

POWELL & TALLEY DESTINED FOR SUCCESS OUTSIDE SOFTBALLOne thing is certain after the 2014 season - Texas Tech will have a pair of seniors destined for success. The only two four-year seniors on the Tech roster, Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell are scheduled to receive their degrees this spring with Talley earning hers in chemical engineering while Powell will graduate as an animal sciences major. While highly successful on the diamond, the pair also sport two of the highest grade-point averages on the team. Talley, a native of Little Elm, Texas, enters this semester with a 3.8 GPA and has already accepted a position with Oxy, an international oil company. Powell, meanwhile, has registered a perfect 4.0 GPA entering her final semester and will look to attend veterinarian school following graduation.

TEXAS TECH SET FOR 24 GAMES AT ROCKY JOHNSON FIELDTexas Tech fans will have plenty of opportunities to catch the Red Raiders at Rocky Johnson Field this year with 24 home games set for the 2014 season. After three weekends on the road to start the season, Tech opens its home slate Feb. 28 with a doubleheader against Sam Houston State and Southern as part of the Texas Tech Invitational, the first of two home tournaments for the Red Raiders. Tech will also host the fourth- annual Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic on March 7-9, bringing in the likes of UT Arlington, Northern Colorado, Abilene Christian and New Mexico State. Following a nearly week-long trip to Southern California, Tech closes its non-conference slate with a March 19 doubleheader against North Texas and a three-game set March 21-23 with Texas State. The two series begin an eight-game homestand for the Red Raiders, who will open Big 12 Conference play March 28 at home against Baylor. Tech will also host Oklahoma State and Iowa State in a pair of three-game series this season at Rocky Johnson Field.

RED RAIDERS PICKED SIXTH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLLTexas Tech was selected to finish sixth in the Big 12 Preseason Poll that was voted upon by the conference coaches. The Red Raiders, who finished 30-26 a year ago, have ended the season ranked higher in the conference standings than their preseason selection twice under fifth-year head coach Shanon Hays. Oklahoma, the reigning NCAA National Champion, was the unanimous pick to defend its title while Baylor, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma State follow with Iowa State slated a spot behind the Red Raiders in seventh place.
