-Ohio opens the home portion of its 2013 schedule on

Saturday as it welcomes North Texas to Peden Stadium.

-Saturday night’s game will be aired on ESPN3. Ohio has had

its last 10 home games aired on television.

-The Bobcats enter week two after dropping a 49-7 decision

to No. 9 Louisville this past Sunday. The loss was Ohio’s worst

since 2007 when it dropped a 43-0 decision at Toledo.

-Ohio has won each of its last three home openers.

-The Bobcats were picked to win the Mid-American Conference

East Division crown for the second-consecutive season.

-Ohio posted its second-consecutive bowl victory in the 2012

Advocare V100 Independence Bowl.

-The Bobcats will look to become bowl eligible for the sixth

time in the last eight years.

-The Bobcats also will be in search of their fourth MAC East

title under the direction of head coach Frank Solich.

Tettleton currently owns a 19-9 mark since taking over as the

Bobcats’ starting quarterback in 2011.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

-Quarterback Tyler Tettleton needs just 87 yards passing to

surpass 6,500 yards passing for his career. In 2012, Tettleton

averaged 237 yards passing per game.

-Running back Beau Blankenship is just one score shy of

collecting his 20th career touchdown.

-Blankenship will be in search of his fourth 100 yard game in

his last fi ve contests. In 2012, he surpassed 100 yards rushing

in a school-record nine games.

-Wide Receiver Donte Foster is just two touchdowns shy of

surpassing former Bobcat Todd Snyder for third on Ohio’s all-

time receiving touchdown list.

-Foster is also just 70 yards shy of cracking into Ohio’s all-time

career receiving yards top 10 list.

North Texas 31-30 in double overtime. In that fi rst meeting, Ohio

rallied back from a 17-6 second half defi cit to send the game into

overtime. In the overtime session, Ohio’s Taylor Price caught a 15-

yard touchdown pass from former quarterback Theo Scott. Price

then hauled in the two-point conversion to give the Bobcats the

win.

SCOUTING NORTH TEXAS

The University of North Texas is in the midst of its 98th season of

college football. The Mean Green opened their 98th year on the

gridiron in style as they defeated Idaho 40-6. Idaho scored on their

opening possession of the game, but the Mean Green responded

by scoring the next 40 points to secure the win. Quarterback Derek

Thompson led the way for North Texas as he went 23-of-27 for

349 yards through the air. He also had a pair of touchdown passes.

Thompson is in his third year as a starter for the Mean Green. He is

the fi rst three-year starter at quarterback in over 15 years at North

Texas. Defensively, the Mean Green are led by Zach Orr. In 2012,

the Lombardi Award candidate, tallied a career-high 108 tackles.

The secondary is an experienced unit that enters the year with a

combined 45 starts. North Texas was selected to fi nish fi fth in the

Conference USA West Division.

LAST TIME OUT

-Ohio was defeated this past Sunday at Louisville 49-7.

-The 42-point loss was the worst loss Ohio has suff ered since its

43-0 setback at Toledo in 2007.

-Ohio was outgained 615-273.

-With the loss, Ohio falls to 3-2 all-time against Louisville.

-Ohio’s setback to Louisville marked the fi rst time since 2009 in

which the Bobcats have not won their season opener.

--The 55,332 fans at Sunday afternoon’s game was the second

largest crowd ever at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

-Senior tight end Anthony Talbert caught his fi rst career pass in an

Ohio uniform as he hauled in a 36-yard reception.

-Senior off ensive lineman Jon Lechner made his 26th career start

on Sunday against Louisville.

-Junior Josh Kristoff , sophomore Ben Russell and junior Brandon

Atwell tied for team-best eight tackles.

-Redshirt sophomore Devin Bass had a game-high 124 kick return

yards.

HOME COOKIN’

Ohio posted a 5-1 record in home games a year ago. In the

Bobcats’ six home games, Ohio outscored its opponents 226-133,

while averaging 37.7 points per game.

A FAMILIAR FOE

Ohio head coach Frank Solich and North Texas head coach Dan

McCarney have a familiar history as the two both coached against

one another in the Big 12 Conference. Solich coached at Nebraska,

while McCarney served at Iowa State. In their six meetings, Solich’s

Huskers defeated McCarney’s Cyclones fi ve times.

TETTLETON NAMED TO UNITAS WATCH LIST

Ohio University football senior quarterback Tyler Tettleton added

to his list of preseason honors on Thursday as he was named to the

2013 Top 30 watch list for the Johnny Unitas® Golden Arm Award®.

He joins fellow Mid-American Conference quarterbacks Jordan

Lynch (Northern Illinois) and Keith Wenning (Ball State) who also

were named to the Johnny Unitas® Golden Arm Award® watch list.

Seven Ohio University football players were named to the 2013

Phil Steele Preseason Mid-American Conference All-League team.

Seniors Tyler Tettleton, Beau Blankenship, John Prior and Travis

Carrie each were named All-MAC Second Team. Fellow seniors

Jon Lechner and Keith Moore also received all-league honors as

they were named Third Team. Senior Donte Foster was the seventh

player from Ohio to receive Preseason All-MAC honors from Phil

Steele as he earned Fourth Team recognition.

PROTECTING THE ROCK

Ohio held a plus 15 turnover margin in 2012, which ranked

second in the MAC. The ‘Cats fi nished the season with just 10

total turnovers (fi ve fumbles and fi ve interceptions). Ohio lost

one fumble for every 119 rushing attempts and had just one

interception for every 80 passing attempts. In the Bobcats’

season-opener at Louisville, Ohio had just one turnover.

AMONG THE NATION’S BEST

Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton was one of just four quarterbacks

that threw 15 or more touchdowns and had four or less

interceptions last season. Tettleton opened the year by going 161

attempts without throwing an interception. Among the four,

Tettleton and Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron are the

only two signal-callers that return this season.

TETTLETIME

Heading into the 2013 season, Tettleton currently holds nine Ohio

University football career records, including the school standard

for passing yards (6,414), most completions (515) and most

touchdowns (46).

BEAU KNOWS

Running back Beau Blankenship surpassed 100 yards rushing in

nine of the Bobcats’ 12 games a year ago. In two short seasons,

Blankenship has cracked the school’s all-time Top 10 list for career

rushing. He needs just 761 yards to pass former Bobcat great and

current Green Bay Packers scout Chad Brinker for fi fth all-time on

the career rushing list.

SUCCESS IN BOWL GAMES

The Ohio football team has played in four straight bowl games and

has posted back-to-back victories. The Bobcats are one of just 15

schools in the nation that has won back-to-back bowl games.

AMONG THE BEST IN THE MAC

Ohio’s 55 wins since 2006 are the second most victories by any

school in the Mid-American Conference during that period.

Northern Illinois is the only school that has more wins in that

stretch.

NATIONAL ATTENTION

The Ohio University football team was ranked in the top 25 of the

BCS poll (No. 24), Associated Press Poll and USA Today Coaches’

Poll (No. 23) in 2012. Ohio never had been ranked in all three polls

at the same time. The Bobcats also had never been ranked in the

BCS Standings or the USA Today Coaches Poll.

an all-time program winning mark since the start of the 1995

campaign.

GETTING DEFENSIVE

Ohio’s defensive unit ranked in the top fi ve in several defensive

categories in the Mid-American Conference despite suff ering

several injuries throughout the year in 2012. Listed below are

some of the highlights from last year’s defensive unit.

-The Bobcats held Louisiana-Monroe to a season low 314 yards

of total off ense in the 2012 Advocare V100 Independence Bowl.

The Warhawks came into the bowl game averaging 442.7 yards of

total off ense per game and 35.5 points per game.

-The Ohio defense held Eastern Michigan scoreless in the second

half, allowing just 135 yards after halftime.

-Ohio was outgained 309-216 in the fi rst half against Miami, but

responded in the second half, holding the Redhawks to just 115

yards of total off ense in the second half alone.

-The Bobcats tied a season-high with three fumble recoveries

against Buff alo.

-Junior Keith Moore tallied a season-best 16 tackles (solo) in the

Bobcats’ win over Buff alo.

-Ohio forced Norfolk State into fi ve turnovers. The fi ve turnovers

forced by the Bobcats were a season-high.

-Ohio’s defensive unit limited its opponents to less than 100 yards

rushing in four games last season.

-Ohio forced Marshall into three turnovers in its annual Battle of

the Bell matchup.

-The Bobcats notched six sacks on Sept. 8 against New Mexico

State.

-Ohio notched its 38th non-off ensive touchdown since 2004 after

Nathan Carpenter recorded a pick six late in the third quarter

against New Mexico State.

-Ohio held Penn State to just 173 yards of total off ense over the

fi nal three quarters in its opener against the Nittany Lions.

PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE UP FRONT

The Ohio off ensive line is one of the most experienced units in the

MAC. The Bobcats boast an interior core that has made 43 career

starts.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

Ohio’s matchup vs. North Texas on Sept. 7, will mark the 53rd

appearance for the Bobcats on the ESPN Family of Networks

since 2005. This season, Ohio is scheduled to make six more

appearances on the ESPN family of networks.

BOBCATS RECEIVE FACILITY UPGRADES

This off season, the Ohio football team received some important

facility upgrades as the program replaced its playing surface and

began construction on its indoor practice facility. The Bobcats’ old

playing surface had been in place since 2002. Ohio’s new turf was

installed by AstroTurf. The Bobcats’ new indoor practice facility

will provide Ohio with a 100-yard fi eld for use during inclement

conditions.

HERMAN SELECTED ON DAY THREE OF THE NFL DRAFT

Former Ohio University off ensive lineman Eric Herman was

selected by the New York Giants during the third day of the 2013

NFL Draft, which was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York

City. Herman was picked 19th (225th overall) in the seventh

round. The Oregon, Ohio native becomes the 31st player in school

history to be selected in the NFL Draft and the fi fth to be taken in

the Frank Solich Era. Ohio has now had a player selected in the NFL

Draft in fi ve of the last six years.

BOBCAT RADIO READY FOR 2013

More stations and more access to content highlight additions to

the Ohio IMG Sports Network for 2013. The network boasts more

stations than any other MAC school and stretches into three states.

Eighteen stations comprise the network with 14 carrying football

games, 13 airing men’s basketball games. In addition, eight will

take the Frank Solich and Jim Christian Shows and 12 will air

Bobcat Sports Today.

Growth by numbers and coverage area has been a yearly

occurrence. This year, WCJO-FM in Jackson, WYPC-AM in Wellston

and WMOV-AM in Ravenswood/Ripley, W. Va. join the network.

This is year three for the partnership with WOUB. Their stations in

Cambridge, Chillicothe, Ironton and Zanesville will carry football

and basketball. WXTQ-FM in Athens once again anchors the

network as the fl agship station, and WYTS-AM in Columbus will

begin airing ancillary programming in addition to games for the

fi rst time.

Ohio returns to action next week against Marshall for the annual

Battle for the Bell matchup. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. inside Peden

Stadium and can be seen on ESPNews. The game also can be heard

live on the Ohio IMG Sports Radio Network. “Voice of the Bobcats”

Russ Eisenstein, Rob Cornelius and Grant Burkhardt will have the

DENTON, Texas (AP) -Theo Scott and Taylor Price hooked up for a 15-yard touchdown and the ensuing 2-point conversion pass as Ohio rallied for a 31-30 double-overtime victory over North Texas on Saturday.

Ohio (1-1) decided to go for two points after a roughing-the-passer penalty on the TD moved the ball inside the 2-yard line.

The teams matched fi eld goals in the fi rst overtime before Cam Montgomery gave North Texas a 30-23 lead on the fi rst possession of the second extra period with a 7-yard TD run.

North Texas (1-1) forced overtime with 46 seconds left when Jeremy Knott’s 18-yard fi eld goal tied it at 20-20.

Kenny Jackson gave Ohio its fi rst lead of the night with a 69-yard interception return in the fourth quarter, picking off backup quarterback Nathan Tune after starter Riley Dodge (12 of 22, 117 yards) left the game with a shoulder injury.

Head Coach Frank Solich has continued a storybook turnaround during his tenure at Ohio Uni-versity. Now in his ninth season (15th overall), the Bobcats have been bowl-eligible in six of his fi rst eight years at the helm, have won 55 games since 2006 - the most among any team in the Mid-American Conference East Division - and have had student-athletes selected in the NFL Draft in fi ve of the past six seasons.

In 2012, Solich directed Ohio to its best start to a season since the 1968 campaign as the Bob-cats opened the year 7-0. The Bobcats’ 7-0 start included a thrilling 24-14 victory over Penn State in front of a nationally-televised audience.

After opening the year 7-0, Ohio earned a spot in all three major college football polls for the fi rst time in school history - Associated Press, USA Today and the Bowl Championship Series standings.

Following the 2012 campaign, Ohio placed six individuals on the 2012 Mid-American Confer-ence All-Conference teams and earned a bid to the 2012 Advocare V100 Independence Bowl to punch its ticket to a fourth-consecutive bowl trip.

In the Independence Bowl, Ohio did not disappoint as it defeated Louisiana-Monroe 45-14 to pick up its second-straight bowl victory. The Bobcats also set or tied 11 bowl records in the win, including the mark for total yards as they fi nished with 556.

The 2012 season also saw the emergence of running back Beau Blankenship. In his fi rst sea-son as a starter, Blankenship set the single season rushing record of 1,604 yards under Solich’s watch. He also rushed for 15 touchdowns as he averaged just over fi ve yards per carry.

In his seven previous seasons as Ohio’s head coach, Solich guided the Bobcats to an impressive 50-40 record. In 2011, Solich led the Bobcats to their fi rst-ever bowl win as Ohio defeated Utah State 24-23 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl to fi nish the year 10-4.

Ohio’s win over the Aggies gave the Bobcats their fi rst 10-win season since 1968. The Bobcats’ 10 wins were also the most among division I-A teams from the state of Ohio. The Bobcats four losses came by a combined total of just 19 points (4.75 points per game).

Solich’s 2011 Bobcat squad set 47 school records, won six of the team’s last seven games and had a league-best 11 players on the MAC All-Conference teams. In addition, Solich picked up his 100th career victory following a convincing 30-3 victory over Gardner-Webb on Sept. 10.

Among the 11 players selected All-MAC, place kicker Matt Weller was named Special Teams Player of the Year, off ensive lineman Joe Flading was named First Team and quarterback Tyler Tettleton became the fi rst Ohio signal-caller to be named all-league since 1985. Under Sol-ich’s watchful eye, Tettleton re-wrote Ohio’s single season record book as he set 12 records and became the fi rst quarterback in school history to pass for 3,000 yards in one year, while in the process throwing a program-best 28 touchdowns.

The 2011 campaign also saw Ohio defeat arch-rival Miami for the sixth-consecutive season - the program’s longest winning streak since it won six straight from 1937-1942. Since Solich took over in 2005, Ohio has only suff ered one loss to Miami.

When it was all said and done, the 2011 senior class posted a combined record of 36-27 to complete the best fi ve-year run in program history.

In 2010, the Bobcats went to the New Orleans Bowl, making the program’s fi fth bowl appear-ance and third in the past fi ve seasons.

Following the season, seven student-athletes were named All-MAC and quarterback Boo Jackson fi nished his career as Ohio’s career leader in completion percentage (.604), pass ef-fi ciency (136.3), total off ense per play (6.18), passing yards per attempt (7.7) and touchdown passes (38). He also fi nished the season with 26 total touchdowns, 48 in his career, which is fourth all-time. He also accumulated 18 passing touchdowns in 2010 (fourth all-time on the single-season list).

The 2009 season was equally successful as the senior class compiled 28 victories during its four years on campus. In addition, Ohio boasted a school-record 12 All-MAC selections with four capturing All-America honors en route to a second MAC East title in the squad’s last four years.

Solich was named the conference coach of the year by Phil Steele.

Following back-to-back seasons of bowl eligibility, the Bobcats followed it up with an off en-sive outburst that rewrote many of Ohio’s all-time team and individual records in Frank Sol-ich’s fourth year at the helm. In 2008, the Bobcats’ aerial attack set three school single-season passing records, including passing yards, passing yards per game and touchdown passes all of which stood until the conclusion of the 2011 season.

Overall, Ohio also totaled 4,337 yards of total off ense, which at the time was the third-highest total in school history. Following the year, six players garnered All-MAC recognition, while in the classroom, fi ve picked up Academic All-MAC awards.

Perhaps the best individual honor under Solich came with safety Mike Mitchell being drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the NFL Draft (47th overall), becoming the high-est drafted Bobcat since 1948 and the highest under Solich.

With Solich as coach in 2007, Kalvin McRae became the fi rst Ohio player in history to rush for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. Other players achieved success for the off ense as well, with tight end Andrew Mooney setting the single-season Bobcat touchdown reception record and quarterback Brad Bower tying the career record for most yards per pass.

In 2006, Solich guided Ohio to its fi rst MAC East Division championship, the program’s fi rst MAC title of any kind since 1968, earning the Bobcats a spot in the GMAC Bowl, which marked the Bobcats’ fi rst bowl game since that same 1968 season.

Following the year, Solich was rewarded with MAC Coach of the Year honors, marking the third time in eight seasons in which he had won his league’s coach of the year award. Ohio’s fi ve-win improvement from 2005 (4-7) to 2006 (9-5) tied for the sixth-best turnaround in the nation.

In his fi rst three seasons, Solich guided the Bobcats to 19 victories in his fi rst three campaigns after the squad had won 11 games in the previous four seasons. Since his arrival, Solich has coached 57 All-MAC players.

His players have also gained national recognition. At the conclusion of the 2011 season, Joe Flading earned SI.com All-America honors. In 2009, LaVon Brazill and Noah Keller were named to various All-America teams, while Matt Weller and Gerald Moore were tabbed as Freshman All-Americans. In 2005, Dion Byrum became Ohio’s fi rst non-special teams All-American since 1968, and three rookies have been honored on The Sporting News Freshman All-America squads.

Ohio has also seen an increase of national television exposure since Solich’s arrival in 2005 as the Bobcats have played on the ESPN Family of Networks 50 times. This past season, Ohio had 12 of its 13 games televised on the ESPN Family of Networks and for the fi rst time in school history, the Bobcats had all of their home games televised. The program has also seen an in-creased level of exposure in the media as it was featured in Sports Illustrated, USA Today, The New York Times and Boston Globe.

Since Solich arrived in Athens, Bobcat players have been named to watch lists for such presti-gious honors as the Maxwell Award, the Butkus Award, the Lombardi Trophy, the Lott Trophy, the Davey O’Brien Award, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, Manning Award, the Biletnikoff Award and the Nagurski Trophy. Byrum was a semifi nalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented to the nation’s top defensive back, in 2005.

Off the fi eld, Solich is equally proud of his player’s accomplishments in the classroom. In the past three seasons, the Bobcats have had 18 Academic All-MAC selections. He has also had two seasons where an Ohio player has been named a semifi nalist for the Draddy Trophy, one of the most prestigious academic honors in college football. Academic success is nothing new for So-lich’s teams. While head coach at Nebraska, almost 90 percent of his student-athletes earned their degree. Seven times Huskers earned fi rst-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and on four other occasions, second-team honors were bestowed.

Solich was named the Bobcats’ head coach on Dec. 17, 2004. In short order he assembled a talented and tested coaching staff , coordinated recruiting eff orts to assure a steady stream of outstanding student-athletes to the program, supervised a highly productive off -season weight program producing dozens of personal bests and concluded all-business spring drills introducing his players to tried and true off ensive and defensive schemes.

Solich’s arrival brought a renewed enthusiasm to the Bobcat football program. Ohio used that spark to begin a massive renovation of Peden Tower to better serve its student-athletes.

The momentum carried over into Solich’s fi rst season on the sidelines at Peden Stadium. Sol-ich’s fi rst win at Ohio came against defending Big East champion Pittsburgh in his home debut. Dion Byrum’s two interception returns for touchdown on national television in an overtime victory put the Bobcats on the national stage. The win was one of only two victories for MAC teams against BCS-conference opponents during that season.

Solich arrived in Athens after six seasons as the head coach at the University of Nebraska. Sol-ich spent nearly 30 years as part of the Nebraska program as a player, assistant coach and head coach. A Big 12 Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2001, Solich produced nine-win seasons in fi ve of his six years as head coach of the Huskers. In 1999, 2000 and 2001, he generated 12, 10 and 11 win seasons, respectively. He also generated six-consecutive bowl appearances including a 2001 run at the national championship against Miami in the Rose Bowl.

Under Solich’s leadership, Nebraska spent 54 consecutive weeks in the Associated Press Top 10. In his fi rst fi ve seasons as Husker head coach, Solich won 49 games, more than both his storied predecessors, Bob Devaney and Dr. Tom Osborne, in their fi rst fi ve years at Nebraska.

Moving on from Nebraska following a 2003 season in which his Huskers went 10-3, Solich was nevertheless determined to stay as close as possible to the college game until just the right opportunity came along. In a unique professional development opportunity all too often ignored by colleagues, Solich chose to travel the college and professional ranks to update his knowledge of the game, broaden his perspectives on its nuances and challenges and ready himself for the next great challenge.

Stepping back from the sideline included wide-ranging visits to some of Division I-A’s top pro-grams as well and the schedule included much more than a courtesy call. His ambitious fact-fi nding odyssey included stops at Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin, Miami and Southern California.

Coming from his native Cleveland to Lincoln back in 1962, he was recruited to play fullback for the Cornhuskers as a part of Bob Devaney’s fi rst class of freshmen. During his time in the Husker program, Nebraska went 9-2, 10-1, 9-2 and 10-1. He earned All-Big Eight honors in 1965 and was the fi rst Husker to rush for 200 yards in a game. His place in the Nebraska tradi-tion was formalized with his induction into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1992.

While his accomplishments as a player were impressive, his work as a gifted teacher and as-sistant coach perhaps had as much to do with his arrival in the shrine as anything. Nine of the 15 seasons he served as running backs coach, Nebraska led the nation in rushing. He recruited and coached 1983 Heisman winner Mike Rozier and produced at least one all-conference run-ning back in thirteen of the fi fteen years he mentored that position. As a head coach, Solich mentored Eric Crouch to the 2001 Heisman Trophy.

-Ohio was defeated this past Sunday at Louisville 49-7. -The 42-point loss was the worst loss Ohio has suff ered since its 43-0 setback at Toledo in 2007.-Ohio was outgained 615-273.-With the loss, Ohio falls to 3-2 all-time against Louisville.-Ohio’s setback to Louisville marked the fi rst time since 2009 in which the Bobcats have not won their season opener.--The 55,332 fans at Sunday afternoon’s game was the second largest crowd ever at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.-Senior Anthony Talbert caught his fi rst career pass in an Ohio uniform as he hauled in a 36-yard reception.-Senior off ensive lineman Jon Lechner made his 26th career start on Sunday against Louisville.-Junior Josh Kristoff , sophomore Ben Russell and junior Brandon Atwell tied for team-best eight tackles.-Redshirt sophomore Devin Bass had a game-high 124 kick return yards.
