T he Mariposa Land Port of Entryin Nogales, AZ, is the fourthbusiest land port of entry in theUnited States processing nearly

half of the fresh Mexican produce con-sumed in the United States. Fresh pro-duce has been crossing through theNogales ports for over 100 years. TheMariposa facility has served the needs ofimporters, exporters and others involvedin international trade for the past 40years. In 2009 this port began significantrenovations aimed at improving process-ing, inspections and traffic flow at theport. Since late 2013, the 8 commerciallanes, 56 commercial dock spaces and 12car lanes have been operational and thefinishing touches will be completed byAugust of this year. The new port isalready yielding many benefits but mostimportantly to the users are the lowerwait t imes to both Northbound andSouthbound crossings.

More inspection lanes, inspectionspaces, and inspection facilities meanincreased space for processing. All lanescan be switched between expedited trav-el lanes or regular lanes at the flip of aswitch to provide real-time increasedcapacity for trusted traveler and shipperprograms. Additionally, the port is pleasedto be receiving 120 new Customs officers(8% of the total new staff in the U.S.) tofacilitate product movement.

Mariposa also provides an additionalbenefit only Arizona is offering. Over-weight permits available from the Arizona

Department of Transportation al lowtrucks of up to 90,800 pounds from Mexi-co to enter and be broken down at localwarehouses after crossing the border.

port’s design. Additionally, quicker bordercrossing and less idle time for trucksmeans decreased air pollution.
