States Are Cutting K-12 Education Formulas — the Primary Funding Source for Schools States have made steep cuts to education funding since the start of the recession and, in many states, those cuts deepened over the last year. Elementary and high schools are receiving less state funding in the 2012-13 school year than they did last year in 26 states, and in 35 states school funding now stands below 2008 levels — often far below. States made these cuts after the deepest recession in 70 years hit beginning in late 2007, precipitating a historic collapse in state revenues. Because states relied heavily on spending reductions in response to the recession, rather than on a more balanced mix of spending cuts and revenue increases, funding for schools and other public services fell sharply. While emergency aid from the federal government reduced the severity of cuts to school funding in the years immediately following the onset of the recession, Congress allowed that aid largely to expire at the end of the 2011 fiscal year, before state revenues had recovered from the recession. Does your business ebb and flow with the seasons? Looking to hire extra staff for

the up and coming holiday season, or find that you wished you’d hired temporary workers this past summer? Whatever your plans, hiring seasonal workers involves following a few rules of the road. Many of the laws and regulations that apply to

full-time employees also apply to seasonal or part-time employees.

Oasis Cinema to Host Film Festival

will host the first Santa Cruz County Historical Film Festival on February 8, 2013 in Nogales, Arizona.

The event will take place from 6-9pm and feature the film “Battle Hymn.” Light

refreshments and a panel discussion will precede the film.

Over 125 movies have been filmed in Santa Cruz County since 1918. The committee believes that a

film festival is a way to celebrate that unique history.

The Film Festival Committee is currently looking for

people who worked on “Battle Hymn” in 1957 and would be interested in sharing their experiences and

thoughts with movie goers. If you or a family member were involved with the making

of “Battle Hymn”, please contact Linda Rushton

at (520)988-5425.

The Aztecs made what may be the first salsa - tomatoes prepared with peppers, corn, and salt. China is the world's largest producer of tomatoes, while the United States is the world's second largest tomato producer. The tomato itself may not be poisonous, but tomato leaves and stems definitely are. In fact, the leaves and stems of all plants in the nightshade family are poisonous because they contain atropine and other toxic tropane alkaloids. Unripe, green tomatoes also contain small amounts of these toxins so they should never be eaten raw (but fried green tomatoes are okay!)
