THE BRIEF

To design a one bedroom apartment for a woman in the centre of

a cosmopolitan European city. It had to be elegant and calm

and serve as a sanctuary. The client wanted the space to reflect

quality and style with a touch of glamour and sophistication.

She also wanted the design to be eye catching with striking

elements.

RESPONSE

The design was based on luxurious and natural textures. A soft complimentary colour scheme of blush pinks, muted greens and

warm grey was chosen together with touches of gold and copper. Stand out elements were placed throughout the apartment to

create an element of drama. To create a feeling of space, the design was open-plan and harmonious throughout.

THE BRIEF To design the ground floor of a four bedroom house for a young family of four in Byron Bay, Australia. The parents were professional photographers with two eight year old twin boys. They were a creative, active and sociable couple who valued family life and had many interests between them. The aim of the design was to embody the outdoor lifestyle and the seamless transition from outside to indoors. It also had to reflect the client ’s many talents and varying interests. The space had to be stylish and have an easy-going and welcoming ambiance with an eclectic twist that was suitable for a busy, sociable family.

SKETCHUP MODEL OF K ITCHEN RENDERED IN PHOTOSHOP

RESPONSEKeeping the family ’s lifestyle in mind, natural, non synthetic, tactile materials and textures such as natural wood, stone, rattan, wicker and naturally textured fabrics were used. The space was designed to be light and fresh with a cool and calming colour scheme using combinations of blues and greys. Darker indigo was Injected into this backdrop with a splash of energetic and vibrant pure yellow to reflect the client ’s positive and active personalities. The design was stylish, comfortable and relaxed with a sense of fun where the clients could enjoy each other ’s company as well as their friends.

Priorities were to design a kitchen and dining area where the family could entertain and a sitting room area where the family could enjoy activities together. The ground floor consisted of different zones but the whole area flowed together for easy living and entertaining.

THE BRIEFTo use given sketches to develop a thorough design solution detailing all proposed materials, their construction and other joints and design details . A final design solution in a detailed working drawings package was to be presented.

SKETCHUP MODELS RENDERED IN PHOTOSHOP

RESPONSEExtensive research of reception desks, ergonomics and anthropometrics and building regulations were compiled. Also, various materials and processes with a focus on their limitations and sustainability. Three main materials of brass, oak veneer and Jesmonite were chosen for the reception desk focusing on practicality and sustainability as well as aesthetics.

As part of the design development a sketch model was made to test theories and regulations. Finally, a detailed working drawings package was collated including an exploded isometric drawing.

THE BRIEFTo design the ground floor of a new flexible office space for WeWork in Greenwich, London. It required the development and understanding of a brand within the commercial sector. The focus was explicitly identifying and exploring how design could influence the way people behave in a space and the effects this could have on productivity, creativity and human interaction. The design was to respond to the ethos and values of the brand.

The process was to undertake research, conceptual development, sketching and model making, design development, sourcing, and create technical drawings with AutoCAD and visuals using SketchUp and Photoshop.

Along with in depth design development and continually referring back to the concept other important factors had to be taken into consideration such as full accessibility and branding . With full accessibility in mind the layout was designed so that the ground floor had everything required for wheelchair users. The Mezzanine level did not offer any functions that were not already available on the ground floor. Other things considered and adhered to were the orientation of the space, ergonomics and anthropometrics and building regulations.

SKETCHUP MODEL RENDERED IN PHOTOSHOP

RESPONSEInitially starting with mind maps developing into extensive research, the concept of INTERTWINED was conceived and with the use of a sketch model and sketches the concept was developed further into a final design solution.

THE BRIEF The focus of the project was to develop skills and knowledge of professional practice through group work. The project was for The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability (RHN), a hospital that provides short and long term care for patients with var ying levels of neuro-disability.

The group had to propose a creative but budget-conscious design for the hospital ’s Research Department, Education Centre and nurse’s common room. This had to be completed in a way that responded to the needs of staff and visitors and that creatively represented and communicated the values and aspirations of the RHN.

RESPONSEWith inspiration taken from the concept of ‘CULTIVATING MAVERICKS ’ the design was developed using a sketch model. The space was explored and different layout ideas were developed and analysed. Several zoning plans were analysed and further sketches pushed the final design forward.

THE BRIEF To design an urban dwelling that inspired and was inspired by what it means to be creative. The space, located in Queen Village, Philadelphia, would be inhabited by high profile visiting artists, exhibitors and creatives. The general public would also have the opportunity to book the property for short stays much like Airbnb.

The space had to be divided into at least two separate apartments with separate entrances. The brief also required a choice of special interest and on this occasion ‘sustainability ’ was chosen.

RESPONSEAfter extensive research, inspiration was developed and the concept of ‘MERGING CULTURES ’ was decided upon. With the use of a sketch model and abstract models, the design was developed further. Zoning and template planning were explored and finally a design proposal was demonstrated with the use of AutoCAD, SketchUp and Photoshop.

The apartment was designed to be open plan to make use of as much natural light as possible. At the same time the building consisted of many columns which were concealed into walls which made them less apparent. The accessible apartment was designed for easy use for a wheelchair user whilst adhering to building regulations, anthropometrics and ergonomics. However, the apartment could just as easily be used and enjoyed by an able bodied person.

Sustainable products and processes were recommended such as wood flooring, composite worktops or underfloor heating. The colour scheme was neutral with white walls to highlight striking works of art with splashes of blush pink to add some colour combined with light and dark greys.
