NEWSLETTER ST. TIMOTHY LUTHERAN CHURCH AND PRESCHOOL 5124 164 th St. S.W. ~ Edmonds, WA 98026 Telephone: 425-743-2323 October 2012 A.D. -- Thoughts from the Pastor Brothers and Sister in Christ: It was with sadness that the voters of Saint Timothy Lutheran Church decided on August 26, 2012 to close our preschool. A number of reasons were sighted as to why we were facing an up hill battle that made it difficult to continue with our preschool at this time. A very important reason was that there were really not enough children registered to support our keeping the preschool open. I don’t believe that the congregation made this decision lightly. The preschool has been part of the congregation for a longtime. From the information that I was able to find, Saint Timothy began the preschool program in September 1981. That’s 30+ years ago! Many people have faithfully served in various ways over those years in sharing Jesus Christ with the children and their families in our preschool. Some of those people are still members of the congregation. We thank the Lord for all those who faithfully worked from the very beginning to bring the Gospel of Jesus to little children as they were growing up. We also pray that the Lord would continue to bless the words about Jesus that were heard in the lives of those who attended. As we closed our preschool, Trinity Lutheran Church [LCMS] and preschool in Mt. Vernon, WA was attacked by a suspected arsonist. Various parts of their church building were damaged by fire, smoke, and water. One area hit was their preschool. Hearing about their loss, we offered to give certain items from our closed preschool to our sister congregation for use with their preschool. They made a couple of trips to get those items and now have their preschool open in a different location. We were happy to be able to help our brothers and sisters in Christ at Trinity to continue to share with children and their families the good news about Jesus Christ. The question that comes to my mind now is this: in what area(s) of mission and service are we here at Saint Timothy going to forge ahead? This is not an easy question to answer. Each of us individually has a duty as a disciple of Jesus Christ to do our part, as we are able, to share the good news about Jesus Christ with each other and with those folks whom the Lord brings into our life. But the Lord has also brought us together as a congregation to do things together that promotes the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our community and around the world. What specifically might those things be? This is more than having a Bible Class, Sunday School, and Worship Service each Sunday morning. These are important for our faith walk with the Savior down life’s path to heaven. We should encourage each other to remain faithful to Jesus. If you are having a hard time putting your finger on an area of mission and service that we might engage in, ask the Lord to give you some ideas that you can share with your brothers and sisters in Christ. May the Spirit help us to hear each other out and help us as a congregation to let the light of the love and forgiveness and peace of Jesus Christ radiate out into our community around our location in some new and/or different ways. May the love of the Lord Jesus always be in your hearts! Rev. Richard E. Flath [email protected] H - 360-568-6580 C - 425-210-1795

NEWSLETTER ST. TIMOTHY LUTHERAN CHURCH AND PRESCHOOL

St. S.W. ~ Edmonds, WA 98026 Telephone: 425-743-2323

October 2012 A.D. -- Thoughts from the Pastor

Brothers and Sister in Christ: It was with sadness that the voters of Saint Timothy Lutheran Church decided on August 26, 2012 to close our preschool.

This is more than having a Bible Class, Sunday School, and Worship Service each Sunday morning. These are important for our faith walk with the Savior down life’s path to heaven. We should encourage each other to remain faithful to Jesus.

2012 Northwest District Convention Report

The 63

rd Convention of the Northwest District of the Lutheran

Church-Missouri Synod was held at the Portland Convention Center, and I (our lay delegate) attended all sessions. June 21 - 23, 2012. Pastor Flath (our pastoral delegate) this was my first District Convention as lay delegate. I found it very interesting and thank you for the honor of representing St. Timothy.

The two Floor Committees had 36 overtures (suggestions/requests) that individuals, churches or entire circuits wanted to bring to the Convention for consideration. Out of these, the committees produced 15 resolutions for the entire voting assembly to consider.

I won't bore you with a description of all 15 resolutions, but I would like to highlight some of the more in-teresting ones. A somewhat hot topic Synod wide and certainly an important one for our Northwest District was the resolution to affirm the 1989 Synod Resolution concerning the ministry of Licensed Deacons. Support for the continuance of the Licensed Deacon program was passed by an 80% margin and that resolution will be forwarded to Synod for consideration at its 2013 Convention. A ground breaking resolution (for the LCMS, at least) was passed that supported the development of a model for distance education leading to ordination within our church body. While our church already has a basic program that provides this (the SMP: Specific Ministry Pastor program), the intention of this resolution is

for the eventual development of a distance education program leading to a Master of Divinity degree.

This also is being forwarded to Synod for its consideration. One resolution that certainly has local implication for St. Timothy was Res: 2-03 which encouraged congregations, during the next 5 years to focus on the rich heritage of the Reformation. 2017 will be the 500

th anniversary of the Lutheran

Reformation and the Northwest District is calling on its member churches to take advantage of this time to let people "know who we are!"

We were privileged to hear many speakers present information about the various ministries throughout the NW District as well as some at Synod level. Three speakers were especially interesting. The first was Rev. Anthony (Tony) Cook, Assistant Professor of Practical Theology at Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis. He was our daily Bible study leader. The second was Rev. Dr. John C. Wohlrabe Jr., Synod Second Vice President, who gave us a Synod Report and who also, preached at our worship service. Third and a real highlight for me, was a presentation by our Synodical President, Rev. Dr. Matthew Harrison. He spoke briefly about Synod status, and then opened the floor for an impromptu, no holds barred, question and answer session. And it truly was “no holds barred“. He is a very gracious leader with a genuine pastoral heart. We' are truly blessed as a church body to have such quality leaders.

2 CHRONICLES 7:14 GROUP

The 2 Chronicles 7:14 Prayer Group meets each Sunday at 8:24 am. We have a dedicated group of 4 or 5 people and wish to include as many of you as possible.

We meet to pray for the up-coming service, the Pastor and his message, others who will be serving, the Sunday School and teachers, LC-MS, all Christian churches, membership needs, or country and its government, the military, and whatever God lays on our hearts.

If you’re wondering about our name, go to your Bible and read the passage of 2 Chronicles 7:14, then come a little earlier and join us in lifting our prayers to the Lord. Or let us know your prayer requests so that we may present them to the Lord for you. If you’re not comfortable praying in a group, join us while we pray and add your thought to strengthen our prayers before God.

We’ll see you in the “Blue Room” – in prayer.
