Welcome back to the start of another year! As always there are some big steps in the
stages of schooling and development for many of our students. It is great to see
Year 7 starting in a positive fashion with students enjoying the different experiences
that are offered at high school. We have ensured that we are supporting our high
expectations in learning and challenging all to extend their abilities.
Our school enjoyed some excellent results and outcomes at the end of 2017. We had
students achieving exemplary ATAR results and a plethora of students gaining
employment, apprenticeships or going on to further education, all of which is
extremely competitive. As a Principal I find it wonderful to hear about our students
success and plans in their respective next stage of life.
I am steadfast in my belief that our students thrive at Wingham High due to the
myriad of opportunities on offer. I continue to support staff as much as possible to
promote these learning experiences that extend from, or compliment, classroom
teaching.
You will see on the following pages some examples of the learning opportunities on
offer. A critical point I have been voicing to students at the beginning of this year is
that we are all a part of what makes up Wingham High. We offer quality teaching
and learning experiences, we set the goal for each and every student to be an active
participant in their learning and to step outside of their ‘comfort zone.’ Scary
sometimes, but no extension of ability comes without effort.
Here at Wingham we welcome input, especially where there are positive thoughts
and solutions. A great way of having an input is through our active Parents and
Citizens Committee (P&C). On the agenda is P&C financing innovative opportunities
and resources for Wingham High.
If you are interested in positions on the P&C please come along to the AGM on
Thursday 1st March 2018 at 6:00pm in the school Library.
I look forward to your support and ideas, persisting to make Wingham High a place
where learning is valued and all students matter.
Again, welcome to 2018 and I look forward to us enjoying the many successes it will
bring.

The graduating class of 2018 have selected the Westpac Helicopter as their charity of choice. The
Westpac Helicopter plays a significant role in supporting our local community and many of our
local families have benefited from their services.
On the night we will be auctioning a bat signed by the 2018 English team and raffling off the signed
game ball. The match is set for Tuesday 20th
March 2018 at Wingham Central Park.
We hope to have people arriving at the match at 6:00pm for a 6:15pm start with formalities, trophy and raffle
awarded on completion of the game.
Wingham Beef Exports will be cooking up pulled pork and brisket burgers for sale on the night. Gold coin donations
for the Westpac Helicopter will be collected by our Year 12 students on the night.
Clair Twaddle is the teacher organising the event or you can contact Donna White at 6553 5488.

Year 12 Inaugural Charity Shield Cricket Match
Welcome Year 7
The match will be T20 cricket and will be STUDENTS vs TEACHERS
The start to 2018 at Wingham High saw a special welcome to our new Year 7 group. After a busy few weeks, our
Year 7’s are off to a great start. We are extremely impressed with how prepared they have been for high school and
how they have embraced our school’s quest for high expectations.
With 112 students making up this year group, they are the largest cohort currently at Wingham High. These
students are enjoying a range of engaging learning activities with many also eagerly putting their names down to
be involved in the numerous sporting opportunities offered this year. As they start to develop their friendship
groups, many are finding the confidence to explore the playground.
We would like to thank the parents and carers of these students for your support, trust and understanding as your
children transition into high school. We would also like to invite all parents and carers of Year 7 students to a
breakfast on Wednesday 28th February between 7:45am and 8:45am in the schools MPC to further welcome you
into our school community.

From the Careers Adviser
RESPECT | TRUST | FAIRNESS | POSITIVITY 9 Rowley Street Wingham NSW 2429 | 02 6553 5488 | www.wingham-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
It has been a busy start to 2018 in the Careers area. There has been an excursion to the University of Wollongong
and Macquarie University as well the University Roadshow visiting Wingham HS, and there will be an opportunity
for students to attend the Health Careers Forum at Taree on Tuesday 13th March. This excursion will be offered to
students in Year 10, 11 and 12.
Work Experience lessons will be occurring for all of Year 10. Students must be aware of the legislative and school
requirements before they start organising placements as convenient. Several students have also commenced their
School Based Traineeships and TAFE studies. There have been changes to students’ patterns of study to cater for
individual differences and preferences.
There are lots of opportunities available to our students and therefore lots of information to disseminate. I give
out relevant information at year meetings, through the student notices on Sentral, by email and my WHS Careers/
Year 11 and 12 Facebook groups.
I have a Careers Group on Facebook. Year 10/11/12 students and parents are invited to join this closed group as
another avenue of disseminating the large volume of careers information that comes across my desk. Also, it is
useful when there is a quick turnaround time for applications etc. My group is called WHS Careers. Students in
Year 11 and 12 also have their respective closed group administered by their year advisers. These are useful when
information is targeted to a particular year group.
Our school subscribes to MHS Careers, a careers service which allows students and parents to be kept up to date
with careers news and events. Newsletters are sent weekly. For instructions for parents and students to receive
careers newsletters directly, go to http://www.mhscareers.com/contact.html. Complete the contact us form, and
press send.
The school also has a Wingham Careers website which is www.winghamcareers.com. This service is provided by an
external company and has lots of useful careers information as well as templates for resumes and letters of
application. Students need to register and can then access the students secure area.
Semester 1 is already shaping up to be a busy one with excursions to the University of New England at Armidale,
Charles Sturt University Port Macquarie Campus and the University of Newcastle.
Year 10 will be involved in subject selection interviews for their senior patterns of study and will have the
opportunity to participate in a Certificate I in Financial Literacy course – this is in partnership with the Smith Family.
CSU Future Moves programs will also be running with most year groups during May.
Students and parents are most welcome to make an appointment to see me as required. I look forward to working
with you to gain the best possible outcomes for your child.
University of Wollongong and Macquarie University Excursion On Wednesday 7th to Friday 9th February, 18 Year 12 students attended the University of Wollongong Discovery
Day and Macquarie University excursion. We travelled with 18 other Great Lakes College and Bulahdelah Central
School students and staff.
The students who attended the excursion were: Athena Adams, Bethany Carter, Kellie Clark, Grace Coleman,
Abbey Drury, Riley Fahey, Tianna Gee, Taj Greaves, Kye Gregory, Annabelle Hansen, Sophie Hartcher, Toby Irvine,
Bon Morse, Canaan O’Donnell, Olivia Payne, Luke Percival, Ryan Siegel-Hensen and Paige Webster.
Over 7000 students from across the state attend this 5 day annual event. Students had the opportunity to attend
several lectures of their choice relating to different degree programs they are considering, as well as general
information sessions on maximising the ATAR, study skills, scholarships, early entry, accommodation options and
a campus tour with a student ambassador.
UOW is built on the old botanic gardens and is a picturesque campus with very modern facilities. They offer a free
shuttle bus to the shops, harbour, beaches and student accommodation.

This year we decided to include a visit to Macquarie University on the way home. We were able to hear from
current students and have a tour around the university. Macquarie University is a good option with a range of
courses and transport and shops close by. Feedback from students suggests the extra inclusion of Macquarie
University was worthwhile so I will consider this again for next year. Year 11 students should listen out in Term 4
this year for information on how to register for the 2019 UOW Discovery Day.
There will be excursions to UNE at Armidale,
CSU Port Macquarie and the University of
Newcastle during Term 2.
Many thanks to the students who participated
– they were excellent ambassadors of Wingham
High School.

Early in week 2, our HSC Drama class attended the annual OnSTAGE
performance and exhibition in Sydney.
OnSTAGE showcases the exemplary performances and individual
projects from the previous year's Higher School Certificate and has
been a regular excursion on the Wingham High School calendar.
The excursion is always an inspiring and eye opening experience for
our students as it provides them with the opportunity to witness the
standard they need to aim for in order to achieve success. This year
was no exception.
Under the guidance and supervision of Mr Jovanovic and Miss
Thomas, the HSC Drama class left OnSTAGE with enthusiasm and a
clear direction for their own projects.

The Aboriginal Education Team are working to making
2018 a wonderful year! Our “One Mob”, Wakul Gudida
Group have worked hard to plant, weed, mulch and
water our Indigenous Garden. Although this has been
hard work, especially in this hot, humid weather, it
looks great at the front of our school. The garden has
instilled a sense of pride for our students, which is
evident in the stencilled artwork on the brickwork
encompassing the garden. Keep an eye out for the
next stages of our beautification developments in that
area of the school!
We are planning to have more cultural experiences
throughout the year for our students, where they can
learn more about their culture in their local area
directly from our local Elders.
We hope that we can enable our students to have fun
in our Wakul Gudida group times, learn more about
their culture and to make stronger bonds between the
various peer groups.
Our boys are going to be participating in a class of Stilt
Walking training in Term 1, preparing for a special
presentation later in the year and selected girls will be
participating in Sistaspeak in Term 2.

Year 9 and 10, 2017 Agriculture Students - Visit to the High Country
On December 4th a bus load of excited WHS students
set off on the school bus for Gloucester Tops to visit a
large commercial cattle farm.
What a great day was had by all! Students were able to
observe and help with cattle branding, tagging,
drenching, vaccinating, cow and bull selection as well
as sampling some fantastic homemade baking
provided by our host Darryl Johnston and his
wonderful mother. Perhaps the highlight of the trip
was a drive to one of the many lookout points on the
property to view the amazing scenery.
Certainly one excursion not to be missed in 2018 for Year 9 and 10 Agriculture.
Courtney Eggins, Leah South, Tamika Brown, Tegan Caughlan, Clancy Johnston,
Corey South, Tanique Carey, Courtenay Avery, Megan Smith, Bronte
McSweeney and Blake Leach attended on the day.
