her passion for Home Economics in particular and her relentless drive to engage students so that they learn and succeed is most effective. It has her pushing herself with classwork, co-curricula work and to engage with industry. Her enthusiasm is infectious.

We thank Mr Shaw and Mrs Greffe for their excellent teaching for the students at the College and their contribution to their respective faculties.

Teacher Professional Development

Last Monday teachers completed a third Twilight professional development 3:30pm-6:30pm. The program continued our focus on writing. Students in years seven, eight and nine are being asked to write more. Our goal is to improve student writing by more explicitly teaching and testing writing, and giving feedback to students about their writing.

The professional development also included two sessions on MOODLE, the web-bases platform for student course details, work and resources. We are encouraging faculties to provide structured and comprehensive material for students through MOODLE. On Monday evening, the ‘early adopters’ provided practical instruction to teachers so that more felt capable of using MOODLE for their classes.

Last Thursday, Ms Nicholson, Ms Norton and I reported to colleagues from neighbouring Catholic schools on our efforts as a staff and progress with the focus on writing. Our students are on track to achieve an improvement of up to three marks (12%) for all students in Year eight and nine. This is possible because of both the increased explicit teaching and feedback by staff and the increasing

understanding by students of the criteria and expectations.

Leadership Appraisal and Teacher Performance Pastoral and Curriculum Leader Appraisal

Throughout this term Year Level Pastoral Leaders and the Curriculum Leaders are completing their Appraisals. This year is the third year in these roles. The Appraisal requires a personal reflection on their performance in their roles as Head of a Year or Head of a Curriculum Area adn a staff survey.

Mr Connor (DP) and Mr Browne (APA – Pastoral) are interviewing the Heads of Year and myself and Mrs Nicholson (APA – Junior Curriculum) or Mr Shaw (APA – Senior Curriculum) interview the Heads of Curriculum. Our purpose in these interviews is to validate the person’s reflections on their performance and provide commendations and recommendations.

A less formal Teacher Performance Development Process involves interviews of teachers by a member of the Senior Administration team. The teachers’ goals and reflections on achievements and challenges are discussed alongside the Action Plans for the College for over the three years.

While the processes for leaders and teachers are significantly affirming, they do provide a context for focusing direction as we work together for students.

Year 10 Set Plans

We will shortly issue for Year 10 students and their families a statement pertaining to the prerequisite requirements for selecting Senior subjects for 2018. These students are currently working through their SET Plan process, of which subject selection is an important part. Particularly for the Academic Pathway choice, where students firmly believe they have an achievable goal of an OP 1 - 15, it is vital that they meet the required standards of grades in Semester I and Semester II of Year 10.

Have a Heart Day

Today the College uniform has been left at home and the colours out there are red and pink, the colours of Rosies. This is the culmination of M Fest week, it is Have a Heart Day and is all about fundraising from activities and cake stalls for Rosies. Rosies’ (Friends on the Street ) work reaches out to those most in need, those who are abandoned, marginalised and socially isolated in our communities. Marymount College has a very long standing relationship with Rosies and senior students are regular volunteers.

The perfect weather of recent days has provided a beautiful backdrop to the M Fest celebrations which have brought a wonderful vibe to the school at recess and lunch every day. Students’ singing and musical talents have been showcased in the P&F Courtyard to a most appreciative audience who have regaled in every moment.

Youth Mass

A rap advertising next Sunday’s Youth Mass featured on Thursday lunchtime ‘s entertainment with Spiritual Captain Reece Jackson’s groovy, energetic and very pliable delivery to a hugely delighted audience. Let’s hope the message has reached the target ….and many show up for the 5.30 pm Mass at Mary Mother of Mercy on Sunday.

Catholic Mission

David Mc Govern and Jessica Laidler of Catholic Mission, visited the College last Tuesday accompanied by Sister Mary Goretti of the Daughters of Mary religious order. Sr Mary is from Uganda where her order runs St Luke’s Mission

Hospital and where she works as a nurse /midwife. Students heard of the enormous challenges faced by expectant mothers and the medical staff who work with few resources. They heard some stories of mothers who have to travel to larger centres by motor bike along rough roads seeking facilities such as those needed for a caesarian section and all the time they are already in labour! They learned of young expectant mothers who have to walk very long distances to have what we’d perceive to be a routine checkup and of the archaic equipment they have to make do with such as oxygen machines. The very latest of these are a standard fixture in the birthing units of our hospitals.

Catholic Mission is presently launching an appeal in parishes. The funds will purchase an ambulance which will be used to carry these women more safely and speedily and hopefully contribute to saving the lives of many both babies and their mothers. It is hoped that some Marymount students will deliver the appeal message at Mass in their local parish.

2018 Year of Youth Survey

2018 has been designated as the Year of Youth and will be launched in Sydney in November. In preparation for this, the Australian Catholic Bishops have put out a survey in which all young people between the ages of 16 -29 are invited to participate. The feedback from the survey will be sent to the Vatican and used in preparation for the 2018 Synod. Archbishop Mark Coleridge says this is “..a remarkable opportunity for the voices of youth to be heard.

Senior students will be invited to complete the survey during RE class before the end of this term.

If any parent or carer does not wish their son/daughter to participate in the survey, please contact me at the College.

O Jesus,

Make our hearts so human,

That others may feel at home with us,

That others may feel at home with you

That we might simply become the place where you and they meet

RoSiES ouTREACHNow, going into my first experience with Rosie’s, I was a little nervous but the team leader Robyn, put Peyton, Lucas, and myself at ease. She told us everything to do, and made our role in helping much easier. As we were about to leave for the location , Robyn told us that these people we are going to meet are just like us, but along the road they ran into some bad luck. Which is what homeless people are, ordinary people. As we arrived to the location you could see twenty people waiting patiently for the van to arrive. When handing out the food, I was surprised at how polite they were. I remember one guy, who was the nicest person who I had ever met. At the end when all the food was running out, he went around to all the volunteers and thanked them for taking their time out of their lives and helping him and all the other people who were hungry. If you are thinking about going to Rosie’s, take my advice when I say it was a life changing event for me. I now view the world a little differently, and appreciate what I have and how lucky I am to be going to a great school, with a great family, in a great home. You too will get the same experience out of it as Peyton, Lucas, and myself did.

Two weeks ago, Amelia and i had the opportunity to be sponsored by the Rotary Club of Broadbeach to attend the annual Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN).

RYPEN is a weekend, leadership development camp for 14-16 year olds.

The camp consisted of numerous leadership and bonding activities, giving us the chance to grow and learn new things with people from across Queensland. Over the three days we had a number of guest speakers come and talk to us on an array of topics such as personal growth, determination, goal setting, resilience and leadership.

I would like to thank Miss Burgess and Rotary for this incredible experience and opportunity to attend.

If anyone is interested in this camp, I highly suggest you give it a go, you wont regret it!

YEAR 11 PEER SuPPoRT LEADERS ViSiT YEAR 7 STuDENTS oN CAMP

22 of our Year 11 Peer Mentors set out at 5:30am in the morning to visit their Year 7 buddies at camp. The early start did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the senior students who had been eagerly awaiting the chance to spend the day strengthening the bonds they have already developed during their weekly visits during pastoral time.

It is important to note that there are over sixty Year 11 students who have taken the role of Peer Mentor this year. It is unfortunate that not all of them could come with us on the day, but the relationships they have fostered with the Year 7 students is of vital importance to the community spirit that Marymount is renowned for.

After a lengthy drive, we arrived at Mapleton where a full day’s activities awaited our Peer Mentors. The excitement that the arrival of our group brought to the Year 7 students was infectious. It warmed the heart to see the junior students embrace their senior counterparts which helped the Year 11s to shake off any lethargy created from the bus ride and set about enjoying their time with the Year 7s.

The rest of the day was a truly wonderful experience as I wandered from group to group watching the students partake in the full array of activities on offer. From canoeing to orienteering, team initiatives to bush skills, archery to indoor rock climbing and the giant swing to the flying fox, at every turn I encountered an atmosphere of positivity, support and fun. It was amazing to see the Peer Mentors not only getting involved in the activities, but taking the time to interact with the Year 7s, to get to know them and to share in their experience.

On several occasions, I saw Year 11 students talking quietly with a Year 7 student who was unsure of their ability to complete one of the activities. It was touching to see how gentle and caring our students were, providing encouragement and a shoulder to lean on. Then, on the successful completion of the activity, the sheer pride of the Year 7 student and genuine appreciation of the support they had been given was a joy to behold.

All too soon it was time for the 11s to get back on the bus and begin the long trek home. The vibe on the bus was jubilant and satisfied. Our goal for the day was to make sure every Year 7 student felt safe, supported and that they had fun. From my vantage point, it was very much mission accomplished. I was very proud of the Peer Mentors and feel confident that they will continue to exert a positive influence over the Year 7s.

A great vote of thanks goes to Mr Browne, not only for driving the bus on the day, but for being the instigator of the Peer Mentor program. His continued support is very much appreciated.

NatioNal RecoNciliatioN Week

Have you accessed the Parent Portal? Update your details, view student absences, timetables, and reports.

National Reconciliation Week occurred this week (May 27 – June 3). it began on Saturday with the 50th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum of the Aboriginal questions. Over 90% of Australia’s population voted ‘Yes’ which opened a door; it allowed the Australian Government to change the Constitution so it could be involved in the affairs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples.

This meant the government could make specific laws that applied to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples that could assist in addressing inequalities. One of the most important outcomes of the referendum was to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with a symbol of recognition. The recognition of inequalities and giving the Australian Government the power to address them gave the 1967 referendum longstanding significance for all Australians.

Reconciliation Week ends on June 3 and and commemorates the High Court of Australia’s landmark Mabo decision in 1992, which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land—a relationship that existed prior to colonalisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights or Native Title. The Mabo case ran for 10 years. On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia decided that terra nullius should not have been applied to Australia. This decision recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have rights to the land – rights that existed before the British arrived and can still exist today. The Mabo decision was a turning point for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights, because it acknowledged their unique connection with the land. It also led to the Australian Parliament passing the Native Title Act in 1993.

The College’s Indigenous students have been preparing for this week by learning traditional painting techniques as well as discussing the significant days which occur during the week. Some junior members of the College Mob confidently led the prayer at assembly this week sharing the story of Reconciliation Week with students at the College. Some of the College

Mob were special guests alongside Mr Noonan and Mr Shaw at the Marymount Primary School Reconciliation Week assembly on Wednesday morning. At this assembly our Mob Captain Tom Weatherall, presented a dance titled ‘River’ which the primary students thoroughly enjoyed. We hope that all of these activities have assisted students, staff and parents to consider how they can create a more reconciled Australia this week.

Marymount College Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)

Marymount College would like to begin the journey of creating a Reconciliation Action Plan or RAP. A RAP is a formal statement showing a positive commitment to reconciliation, including practical actions to build strong relationships and enhance respect between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous Australians. At the school level we will need to develop our vision and actions that will increase respect, reduce prejudice and strengthen relationships between the College community and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community. We are now seeking staff, parents and friends, particularly anyone of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent, to join us on the MMC RAP Committee. The committee will meet once a term, initially to discuss the College’s vision and subsequently to draft our RAP. Please email me at [email protected] to express your interest.

NatioNal RecoNciliatioN Week PoetRy

The doors have opened to a new world,

Its doesn’t matter,

Boy or girl,

Sister or brother,

Black or white,

We are now one,

We now have rights.

This reconciliation is to my brothers,

My sisters, and others,

It is time to reunite,

For what is right.

We have been noticed,

Recognised in this world,

Everything is now in focus,

Every dark boy and every dark girl.

Colour doesn’t matter,

No shame,

We can walk with pride,

And without being called names,

The world has woken,

For the better,

Racial views are unspoken,

So we gather together.

Written by Claire Peacock - Year 9

Heads held high,

Keep them up we shall

Come brother, come sister

No matter the colour

We are all together

What we lost is returned,

The friendship we yearned

The black, the white,

We all have rights

Now finally it came

Recognition, no shame

Our future, the sun

We shine our light

Igniting the future

Shading the past,

Together as one,

Recognised, but not dwelled

For the future is bright

Written by Eliza Jones - Year 9

All doors now open

That were long closed,

Shows restoration

Of friendly relation,

Waiting for years to show.

So glad for the new tomorrow

And let the sorrow,

Stay in the past.

Let the old times perish

And the new times flourish.

New rights will be greeted,

With new friendship becoming treated,

As this is the brand new dream time

And this is the free world

We now belong to.

Reconciliation:

The restoration of friendly relations. (when a group of friends come together)

Hoping for the Best

I hear the birds chirping,

Insects quirking,

As I sit on my wonky, brown chair.

Admiring the view and morning dew.

I look up to the sky, imagining wonder,

Wonder for a complete country.

No war, no nasty comments

But just love for each other.

People need to be full of companionship,

And not just battleship.

Laughing and photographing the fun times

And forgetting about the past.

I hear the thud of my mum’s voice,

Begging for me to come.

I forget about my hopes and dreams for a better country,

I can only hope they come true.

Last Tuesday, Year 7 took part in a history workshop all about Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.

We learnt about the lifestyle and roles of people during this era, for example, the roles of men and women. The most interesting part was learning what it was like to be a Spartan warrior. Spartan warriors were feared warriors due to their entire lives being dedicated to training. We also learnt about gladiators, in this case, a gladiator called Amazonia. Originally a slave, Amazonia’s master wanted her to become a gladiator, so her master hired someone to train her. She made it to the Colosseum and won in front in the Emperor. It was really interesting hearing the stories of these warriors and gladiators, and I hope to do something like this again.

Three performers came to our school to perform a play about the difficult first day of high school, and included anti-bullying themes and advice about finding good friendship groups. It was very humorous, and all three actors played multiple characters, encouraging the audience join in too. The show was really enjoyable and educational.

Year 9 Science excUrSion - cUrrUmbin SanctUarY

It was a beautiful sunny day for the year 9 excursion to ‘Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.’ I enjoyed looking at all the different animals. I also learnt a lot watching the bird and reptile show. It was an enjoyable day for all.

Briana Briski Year 9 insider

On Friday 26 May, Year 9 went on an educational, science excursion to ‘Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.’

During the excursion, students were able to examine different animals, focusing on what they had learnt this term. This included: ecosystems, adaptations and classification. We looked at the animals in person: visually learning what their adaptations were, how they are affected by other living and non-living things, and observing how they acted in their environments. I enjoyed learning many fascinating facts about a range of animals that I had not yet known.

YEAR 10 GoLD CoAST CAREERS ExPo

The help and advice that I was given while at the Expo was invaluable.

Year 10 students at Marymount College, and schools across the Gold Coast and Brisbane attended the Careers Expo in Broadbeach earlier this month.

The Careers Expo portrayed a wide variety of opportunities and available jobs in the outside world. It was very intriguing to see the different paths available for the future of our generation such as medical, musical and technological. I can’t wait to see where we all end up in the future and what lies ahead from attending this experience.

Annabel GrovesYear 10 insider

There were plenty of different opportunities for students to find a career or pathway of their choice.

I have always been interested in either a career in nursing or automotive sales and I spoke to many people about my goals and future career choice. The help and advice that I was given while at the Expo was invaluable. I am really glad that I went to this expo because it helped with my vision for my future.

CAREERS EXPO “LIFE SAVING” (TUESDAY 1 AUGUST 6.00PM – 8.00PM)

STUDENT AMBASSADORS

We would like to encourage any students who are interested in assisting on the evening of our Expo as Student Ambassadors to register with the Careers Centre as soon as possible. The role involves assisting the exhibitors with their set up, and providing them with hospitality throughout the evening. This is an opportunity to not only represent the College at one of the most eagerly attended events of the year, but also provides you with access to some of the Coast’s most influential employers, as well as academics from the vast majority of learning institutions within the state.

TRANSITION ADVISORS

We would like to invite parents\caregivers of our College who have already helped their older children to navigate through the senior years and beyond to come along and act as Transition Advisors to our less experienced parents. Only one-on-one advice will be required, within the casual friendly environment of the Expo. This is a concept we are hoping to add to this already popular event, and full support prior and throughout will be provided to those involved. We are thrilled that our P&F have already expressed their support, and hope to encourage other parents/caregivers to get involved. For further details and to register, contact Mr Jason Hamilton (Head of Careers & VET) via Email: [email protected] or phone 5586 1023.

‘it never gets easier you just get stronger’.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays before school, a small group of Year 12 students have been attending running club in preparation for the Gold Coast marathon in July. Some members of running club will be attempting the half marathon whilst others will be running the 10K. Morning’s are getting easier as the weeks have gone on, with two amazing and inspirational teachers Ms Hennigar and Ms Jacks by our side. On Tuesday mornings we meet at school at 6:30am for our long distances runs where we run 6K to 8K. Whereas on Thursdays we have been meeting at North

Burleigh to do some strength training along the beach. For some of us running didn’t come easy but through determination and hard work everyone has seen an improvement in themselves. “Initially at the start of running training I was at the ‘back of the pack’ but with self determination and the encouragement from my peers and the teachers I have come really far mentally and athletically.” (Daniel Waters Year 12 Student) As the day nears closer, with only 5 weeks to go, we are raring to go and feel more than prepared to run our race.

RuGBY LEAGuE: 1ST xiii WEEKLY REViEW

With 10 regular starters out of this Monday night’s match against Aquinas College it was always going to be tough. However, as we are discovering, this is just the way the boys like it.

Confraternity positions were on the line for several positions and the boys were keen to put their best foot forward.

The support our teams are receiving each week is growing which is a testament to the wonderful way in which Marymount staff, students and families are supporting our boys.

With one round to go before the semi-finals we encourage even more supporters to make their way to the Burleigh Bears Juniors – Pizzy Park next Wednesday night for our fixtures which have the 1st xiii (v Keebra Park SHS) and 2nd xiii (v Elanora SHS) both playing at 4.45pm followed by the u15s (v Keebra Park SHS) at 5.45.

This week’s 1st XIII match was against a much improved Aquinas team looking to turn their season around. The Makos let an early try in to a rampaging Aquinas front rower which was subsequently converted leaving Marymount behind at 0-6. The team, who were this week led by centre Bryce Kennedy had to dig deep to ensure they overcame a highly energetic opposition as well as a mounting penalty count.

A well-engineered try to fullback Ben Willetts (converted by five-eighth Cole Geyer) levelled the scores at 6 a piece at the end of the first stanza. The boys were clear in their understanding of how important it was that they stuck to the game plan and remained patient in the second half if they were to get the job done.

The second-half started very well with a bullocking try to front-rower Jack Davidson followed by another well-deserved 4 pointer to hooker Harry Bryant. Geyer converted one of these to take us to a 16-6 lead. Defence, once again, proved the integral ingredient during the remainder of the match with the Makos forced to repel wave after wave of Aquinas attack. There is no substitute for line speed in these situations.

Marymount managed to keep the opposition scoreless in the second half to finish victorious 16-6. The most pleasing part of this performance was seeing how well the team pulled together without many regular members. The work that they have been doing since last October is now paying dividends.

Congratulations to Willetts who received 14 players’ player votes to be named our man of the match. Other players who were amongst the votes included back rower Zai Harris (1), front-rower Reegan Creedy (1), Geyer (2) and Bryant (4).

Well done to all.

Up the Makos!!!
