Happy Christmas to all our readers!

We have now reached the end of another successful school year. The summer exam results put us in the top 100 schools nationally for progress for the fifth year running - the result, as you know, of months of hard work by your sons and daughters and all the

staff at school. So a big thank you to everyone for all their efforts. We have just had a wonderful Christmas concert, all our sports teams are in winning form and behaviour in the recent mock exams was the best anyone remembers. A huge credit to you and your families. All this success makes it even harder to be leaving at the end of this year, after working with so many incredibly supportive colleagues, governors, students and families. I am so grateful for the trust you have placed in me and for the opportunities I've had to share in

all your lives as we travelled together on our journey in the spirit of Christ. But Christmas is the right time for change. Our celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ is a wonderful time to celebrate new beginnings and to rejoice as you welcome your new Headteacher, Mr Doyle. I cannot wish him anything better than the care and support you have always given to me and to our school. Have a lovely Christmas with your families and may God bless you.

Of course, our audiences appreciate all the hard work demonstrated by our wonderfully committed musicians but last week at the annual Christmas Concert, the longest and loudest applause was reserved for Mrs Lutzeier. It was not her violin playing, nor her performance on the ‘jingle bells’ that drew such a reaction (even though they were very accomplished, of course!). It came when, at the end of the concert, Mrs Lutzeier exclaimed how proud she was. Proud of the children; this was one of the best performances we have seen. How fitting then that the parents, families and friends of All

Hallows agreed and clapped as hard as their tired hands could. They were proud too, and whilst it is right to applaud every individual child it is also right to recognise this as one of Mrs Lutzeier’s great personal achievements. It was her vision to create a school where music is at the heart of demonstrating what our

children can do. To master the playing of an instrument demands many things; commitment, interest, concentration, practice and discipline. It connects people spiritually, socially, creatively and academically. It represents so many things that celebrate human positivity and achievement. Having the vision for this is one thing but creating a school where it becomes reality is quite another and whilst credit should be directed to Mrs Lutzeier she is always quick to point out that it is the people around her that put ‘the vision’ into practice. It is the ongoing work and commitment of Mr Banks, Mrs Sprague, Miss Clarke, Mr Fisher and Mrs Banks that deliver these incredible concerts providing our young people with the opportunities to show us all just how truly amazing they all are. A Tribute to Mrs Lutzeier, Headteacher of Our School

For a school full of appreciative students who smile, sing, hold doors

open and bring great joy, For the support of Governors and the

All Hallows parents that bind us together,

For leading our loyal staff and encouraging students to return to

teach at our school, For academic results that place All

Hallows in the top 100 schools nationally for the progress our

students make, For thousands of our ex-students who have headed off to university and the world of work to become

fantastic young adults, For an Ofsted report and a Catholic Ofsted report that say All Hallows is

outstanding in every area, For the spiritual, musical, sporting,

dramatic and other opportunities that are offered to students every day,

For our physical environment with its sports hall, sixth form centre, well-

resourced classrooms and beautiful flowers!

For taking every opportunity to make our students healthier through a

better restaurant or even a one mile run!

For having the courage to take the right path even when it can be a

difficult path to tread, For being determined to do what is right in the interests of our children,

rather than respond to press, political or media pressure,

For accepting the very serious job of Headteacher with a smile every day, For your unwavering desire for us all

to be the best we can, and for leaving our school a better place after 18 years of commitment and service, All Hallows thanks you.

For opening the doors of our school to children and families from across

the world, in particular the successful and longstanding scheme

with Lia, our Italian school link. All Hallows thanks you.

And for leading our community with a focus on our Mission Statement

being ‘together on a journey of learning in the spirit of the Gospel’,

All Hallows Catholic School thanks you.

Our whole school community wishes you the very best for your well earned retirement.

Sixth Form NewsSixth Form NewsSixth Form News Rag Week 2016!

Congratulations to everyone in the Sixth Form and lower school who participated in the All Hallows 2016 Rag week! In total, we managed to raise just over £2,400 for our chosen charities, Cancer Research UK and PTSD Resolution. The week began with a festival theme, with cake sales, face painting, games at break time and wet sponge throwing at the teachers at lunchtime. Other dress up days included pyjama day, services day, ‘on Wednesdays we wear pink’ in aid of cancer research and finally a character themed day. The week finished on

a high, with the charity auction that took place in the auditorium, where some students were even willing to

bid up to £30 for sixth formers and teachers!

Sixth Form Christmas Ball

On Thursday the 8th December, the Sixth Form hosted their annual Christmas Ball at the Lismoyne Hotel in Fleet. The Sixth Formers all dressed up and had a wonderful time, dancing to Christmas songs played by the DJ at the party. It was a much needed opportunity to relax and have some fun after such a busy term organising various

UCAS applications and meeting subject deadlines. The Sixth Form would like to wish all it’s students a very Merry Christmas but remember… mocks are coming up in the new year so don't forget to revise!

“Dress a Girl Around the World” This half term we have been working on pillow case dresses as part of ’Dress a Girl Around the World’ campaign. These dresses will be sent off to children who live in third world countries. Each student has made a dress, complete with pockets, embellishments and adjustable straps. The dresses give the girls a sense of dignity and safety. I have really enjoyed being a part of this project and have furthered my knowledge of textiles. By Ruth Shore 10M

Christmas Crafts Club This half term we have been attending Christmas craft club. A group of us took part to make lots of Christmas items to take home for our families and

friends. We had lots of fun and did lots of cool things, such as: designing a laser cut acrylic bauble to hang on our Christmas trees at home, making a stuffed felt gingerbread man/Christmas tree decoration, making an origami table decoration and designing a Christmas themed mug or card. We also made salt dough ornaments that we can decorate. We feel that this club gave us a great opportunity to be creative and make some great homemade Christmas items, it has been very enjoyable. Thanks to Miss Powell and Miss Brand. By Esme Mitchell 9J and Ruby Watson 9E

The annual English Speaking and Listening competitions got off to a roaring start this year with the Year 8 Shakespeare Competition. Each pair of competitors was required to give a contextual introduction and recite a soliloquy from a Shakespeare play, making good use of their pitch, pace, pause, tone, projection and body language. With an entry from every class the judges, Mr Morrish and Mrs Lutzeier, had a very difficult time indeed! Mrs Lutzeier commended each of the competitors and gave excellent tips to all of Year 8 on how they could improve. Well done to all the students who participated, but especial congratulations to Natalia Kukula and Tom Sowden both of 8H for 1

st place.

All Hallows Farnham Charitable Trust An enormous Christmas Thank You to all those families who have contributed to the All Hallows Farnham Charitable Trust over the past year. The support you give to the on-going development of All Hallows is immeasurable, and we are so grateful. Most recently your donations have assisted us in building an impressive Sixth Form Centre and Performing Arts Auditorium, which will benefit students for many years to come. Our future plans now include creating a modern and pleasant dining space, and redeveloping the front of school entrance and layby to ease the flow of traffic. Thank you once again, we wish you all a prosperous and happy New Year. If you would like any further information about the Charitable Trust please contact the School Finance Office. th November, six students went to Gordon’s School and competed in a Worldwide Geographical Association quiz.

The two teams consisted of Karel Coetzee 10E, Tom Doherty 10P, Francesca Johnson 9H, Diksha Manupriya 9M, Daniel Cryer 8E and Ethan Baxter 8E who represented All Hallows in the competition. We were competing against several other schools from across Surrey and two teams of three were entered; Team 1 were Karel, Diksha and Ethan, Team 2 were Tom, Francesca and Daniel. There were a variety of questions which ranged from counties, map skills and general knowledge questions to an individual round where students were given 10 seconds to answer each question. Out of all the schools, Team 1 came first and team 2 came second which was an amazing achievement. Team 1 will now move onto the next stage of the quiz. We would like to say a big thank you to Mr Halton and Mr Smith for organising the trip, we all had a brilliant experience and are looking forward to competing against other schools across the area. Medieval Day

In the School Hall we were sorted into four groups. These were the medieval families that we would belong to for the day. We were then dressed in medieval clothes to fit our characters. The villagers were: a lord, a man servant, a lady, a maid or a peasant. If you were a lord or the lady in medieval times, your clothes would have been made out of expensive and colourful materials. You would have lots of money and plenty of land to live in. Medieval ladies wore dresses called shifts and then a silk dress over the top. The ladies didn’t even wear pants! The men would have black shoes that had extra leather just to show off their money. The men wore purses to keep their money in rather than wallets. Two of us were married and, after the wedding, there was a lot of food like pigeon, chicken, pork, duck and vegetables. Whilst the rich people were eating amazing

meats, the peasants had much poorer food. Following this introduction, we continued to learn a lot about life in England during the Middle Ages. For example, the Black Death killed a third of the country. We learned about work of carpenters, apothecaries and surgeons. Medieval Day was a lot of fun because we actually held and wore battle armour and because we had close to a real experience of what life would be like in Medieval England. By 7 Pole

Year 7 Sportsman Devon Lowe, 7P is an under 12/13 ice hockey player for Guildford Flames Club,

where he was recently voted man of the match! He was introduced to the ice by his mum, who was an ice skater. However, when mum stopped skating, Devon then began playing ice hockey which he absolutely loves!!

He has been playing the sport for the past 3-4 years and his position in the team is defence. Training is a bit gruelling, as he gets up at 5am on Sundays and trains for about two hours and also on Tuesday evenings after school. Last season, his team won all but 2 games. When asked what he loved about ice hockey, Devon’s reply was, ‘I just love the challenge of defence and also the pre-match laugh with my teammates! By Mrs Coleman 7P tutor

Inspirational Physics On Wednesday, 7

th December, Mrs Parry took us to the

University of Surrey for a fascinating afternoon of physics talks. The first talk was about Dark Matter, and we learned about how physicists are trying to prove that Dark Matter exists and figure out what particles it is made of – is it a new particle that we haven’t yet discovered? The next presenter told us about Quantum Computing, and how it has the potential to significantly

increase our computing ability. He thinks that it might take another 10 years, but they’ve been saying that for the last 30 years! The most exciting presenter was Professor Jim Al-Khalili, who blew our minds with discussion about time travel and relativity. We really enjoyed learning about how physics is being used in research at our local University. By Simon Tuson and Ben Hewett, Year 12.

News from Germany German Exchange During half term, Mrs Boniface and Mr Lines took us on an exchange trip to Cologne. On arrival we were greeted by our partner students who had already visited us in the summer term. The next day we met at school, where we experienced the German school system, before we were given a tour of Cologne, including the Lindt shop and the Olympic Museum. We also had a wonderful chance to go up to the top of the Cathedral which ended in a well-deserved stop at the ice cream parlour! Most of the students also visited the town of Bonn, home to Beethoven, the incredible Haus der Geschichte Museum and Haribo. However, some of our older students also had the opportunity to take part in work placements with the parents of their Exchange Partners. Over the weekend, the students and their partners took part in a variety of different activities, which included

skating, football and bowling. The Monday brought our joint visit to Phantasialand, which has one of the fastest rollercoasters in the world! On the final day we went to Schloss Augustusburg, in Brühl, which had an incredible ceiling and provided a great ending to a great exchange. We all learnt so much German and made many new friends. Die Christkindmärkte ‘It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ as soon as I set foot in the first of the 21 Münchner Christkindmärkte, last month. Indeed, many of our Christmas customs date back to 1840, when Queen Victoria married Prince Albert who brought his seasonal traditions including the Christmas tree, to Britain. A huge Christmas tree covered in warm lights towers over the many stands in the main Marienplatz. I shopped to a background of Advent music. "Stille Nacht" ("Silent Night") sounds magical in the original

German. Wooden stands bedecked with Lebkuchenherzen, traditional Nussknacker, hand-carved candles and beautifully delicate wooden decorations of the Erzgebirge were just as tempting as those offering Glühwein, Kaiserschmarn (a typical shredded pancake, taking its name from Kaiser Franz Josef 1) and the very moreish Reibekuchen (German potato fritters traditionally served with apple sauce). The winter nights are cold, crisp and clear and the stars seem brighter. I can’t quite guarantee you a ‘White Christmas’ but, closer to the mountains, you do stand a good chance of seeing snow. Germans have a word that sums up the feeling I experienced – Gemütlichkeit (an atmosphere of comfort and peace). The Weihnachtsmärkte are truly enchanting and the traditional elements are never lost or change: children gather round the crib in the live nativity scenes; adults huddle round the Glühwein stalls, people come together to enjoy the carols and to shop by candlelight. I had a wonderful time in Munich and Salzburg and am very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to students next December – watch this space for further details in the New Year. Baking Success for Elysia On 27

th October 2016, I walked into

the Aldershot Baptist Church to enter my cake for their Bake Off competition. I’d spent three hours working away in the kitchen to create my dinosaur masterpiece, hoping to bag a prize in my category. As I entered the main hall, I was nervous about it all. I placed my cake down amongst the other contenders and then went home to wait for my cake to be judged by the Lady Mayor of Aldershot. When I was at home all I could think about was what the judges would think. At about midday

we went back to collect my cake and see how I’d got on. As we walked in they called my name, even though they said it a bit wrong, and said that I had won, I read the comments and they said it had brilliant decorations and a light and moist sponge. I felt super excited and was really happy I’d won as I had put so much effort in. The Lady Mayor shook my hand and congratulated me. As I walked down the road carrying my cake I was full of pride. Although some people might think it as just being a local baking competition, to me it was so much more. By Elysia Oliver, 7M

National Cipher Challenge The Cipher Club tries to decipher the challenges given by the National Cipher Challenge. This is run by Southampton University with a grand prize of £1,000. Each new code is released on a Thursday at 3pm. It's an incredibly fun club that challenges your mathematical skills. We have used Caesar ciphers, frequency analysis, vignere ciphers, transposition and Biffid ciphers. We have had to learn and develop new skills each week. Sometimes the code is written backwards too! Each week the teams are ranked and we are still the record holders for for challenge A! By Britina Gurung, 9A

Parking problems outside school We have received complaints from our neighbours about a minority of parents who cause major problems through careless driving or inconsiderate parking when dropping off or waiting to collect their children. As a school we value the maintenance of good relationships with the local community and would ask all parents to support us. Sometimes cars obstruct driveways, park illegally close to junctions, or make it difficult for the school buses to manoeuvre safely. Our local councillors and the neighbourhood police officers have asked us to draw attention to these problems in the hope that they will not need to take action.

Farewell to Dippy The Year 13 biologists were privileged enough to obtain backstage access to The Darwin Centre's Spirit

Collection at London Natural History Museum. The collection contains millions of specimens that are preserved for scientific research and analysis. The collection even contains some of Charles Darwin's original work from the voyage of the Beagle. The students were also involved in an interactive discussion session with one of the museum's many resident scientists, Prof Sara Russell, who is head of the earth sciences department. The students learned about meteorite research in the Antarctic and actually handled a 5 billion year old piece of extra-terrestrial rock. They also got a preview of the whale skeleton being prepared for exhibition next year in the main entrance hall. This will replace the current exhibit "Dippy" the dinosaur who has been on display for many years. By Mr Spreadborough
