WELCOME TO THE MAY NEWSLETTER.As I write this it is raining quite heavily and is really quite cold. The lovely days we enjoyed a couple of weeks ago seem a dim and distant memory and it appears that winter has returned.
Plans are well in hand to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. She really is quite amazing. I hope the weather is kind on 21st April so that the beacon can be lit and the firework display takes place. The Town Council is sending a birthday card to Her Majesty on behalf of you all.
Since the last newsletter I have attended several events around the county and in the town. On 12th March I visited the Fire Station to welcome a young boy on the Autistic Spectrum who is aiming to visit every Fire Station in the country. He completed the Suffolk leg of his project on that date. On 13th March I
attended the Annual Evensong Service of Her Majesty’s Courts of Justice in the cathedral in Bury St Edmunds. This was hosted by the High Sheriff for Suffolk and was a wonderful event. On 14th March, along with many of you, I attended the consultation regarding the proposed new development by Hopkins Homes at land adjacent to the Needham Market Country Practice on Barking Road. On 18th March I judged the Easter Bonnets at Bosmere School. This was quite a splendid event with a parade around the playground. There were some really amazing bonnets and it was very difficult to choose just one from each Class to receive a small prize. Well done to all of them. Also on the 18th March I attended the Annual General Meeting of SSAFA at our own Community Centre. It was interesting to hear of all the good work they

are undertaking on behalf of our service community. On 21st March I attended the Area Police Meeting where the changes to our local policing were described. On 5th April our local MP, Jo Churchill, visited the town and the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Annis and myself escorted her round the town to show her the areas identified for possible development.
On 1st April my Charity Fund benefitted by over £300 thanks to my fashion show. I am grateful to those who attended, all my models and, of course, M & Co. who hosted the show. The proceeds from my Charity Lunch on 10th April are not yet known, but in June I will give you all a final figure for my Charity Fund raising.

NEEDHAM MARKET W.I.We all enjoyed the talk in March when our speaker showed us how, by drawing a few basic shapes, you have the beginnings of some interesting pictures. Below is an extract from the history of the Taylor Wimpey 'Needham Maltings' development which is displayed on one of the four plaques attached to the brick monolith on the site (see also Town News on page 12)
Community News
From 1867 until 2007 there has been, at the heart of Needham Market, a malting and food related manufacturing site making food products ranging from barley malt to dairy cream.Following purchase of the 2.8 acre site a year earlier for £1,500, in 1868 a company ‘G A Clowes Brewers’ started the first use of the site for malting and brewing. The company also produced a boiler de-scaler and “Rain Water Powder” which claimed to turn hard spring water into clear soft water.Later in the nineteenth century two Austrian brothers discovered, during the malting process, a by-product called Malto-Peptone which was a very effective fermenting product for use in brewing. This brought about the formation of a separate company on the site which built up a successful national and international clientele. In 1900 and following a family marriage the original company renamed itself Clowes Walker Limited. The main activity remained malting but they also produced ‘Glasso Black Enamel’, used to treat the inside of wooden fermenting vessels. Within a few years Brax Limited was formed and until the end of the first World War the use of the site was focussed on milling of malt for the bakery trade. Mr Watkinson was the Miller and he and later his son-in-law,
Mr Fred Goddard, were the only two Mill Foremen employed throughout the next 60 years. In 1918 a new company, The United Phosphate & Malt Company, took over the site and added the production of fondant, various cream fillings and marshmallows. A new boiler house was built in 1924 as demand for products from the site, including a bread improver based on Malto-Peptone and called “Cereax”, increased. The mid 1930’s saw the most modern mill in the country, at that time, built here.A random aerial bombing of the town in 1942 by the German Luftwaffe resulted in bomb damage to the site (see also the ‘People’ plaque). Post Second Word War the companies on the site merged to become UPM Limited and, in the mid 1950’s a new factory was built and a larger boiler installed. In 1958 a new company, Malga-UPM was formed and four years on, following a merger, the company, now employing six office staff and 46 workers, became Malga VitaIn 1972 Unigate Foods Limited bought out the companies on site and concentrated on the packaging of sundry products in blue plastic buckets, which featured in many homes and gardens in the town. Three years later Unigate sold its interests to Craigmillar, a division of Van den Bergh & Jurgens who moved its cream division to the site.
In 1982, major investment in the site created a UHT processing plant and the following year the production of Elmlea Dairy Cream was started, followed a year later with production of bread, cake, gravy and custard dry mixes.
In 2004 site owner Unilever announced the removal of all production to Purfleet and the site was destined for redevelopment. Manufacturing finally ceased on Friday 30th March 2007.

Community NewsHOSPICE SHOP OPEN IN NEEDHAM MARKETSt Elizabeth Hospice opened their 26th shop on the High Street in Needham Market at the end of last year and they have a great variety of lovely stock for sale, with many bargains to be had.
The shop specialises in vintage and collectable goods, as well as having a lovely library full of books upstairs for customers to browse in comfort.
Jade Woodrow, St Elizabeth Hospice’s retail area manager, said: “We’re really excited to have opened a hospice shop in Needham Market and it’s well supported by the local community. We’ve got 15 amazing volunteers assisting in the shop with many local people donating lots of lovely items.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone for their generosity and support so far and I’m sure it will continue.”
The St Elizabeth Hospice shop is located at 75 High Street and is open Monday – Saturday 9.30am – 4.30pm.
St Elizabeth Hospice is an independent charity which provides vital services free of charge to patients living with progressive illnesses, and their families and carers across East Suffolk.
St Elizabeth Hospice costs millions of pounds a year to run, and relies on fundraising events, donations and the income generated from its shops to meet the majority of these costs.
42ND ART EXHIBITION AND SALEThe members of Needham Market Community Council would like to thank everyone who helped with the annual Art Exhibition and Sale which took place over the Easter weekend. The event raised £3,565 and a total of 109 paintings were
sold. 131 people attended the Preview Evening and over the weekend 757 came along to the exhibition. We are very grateful to everyone who helped make the Art Show a success, without your help we would not be able to stage such a large scale event.
The money raised will as always be used to help with the upkeep of the Community Centre and will also be given to various organisations within Needham Market.
Thank you all very much.

Report on recent trip to Belarus. I arrived in Belazoorsk in the south west of where our groups are now selected from to temperatures of approx plus 6 degrees and ended my journey in Cherikov on the eastern side to sub zero temperatures, snow and ice.
As in previous years I met with the 18 children who will be coming to Mid Suffolk this year and visiting them at their homes to try and give a comprehensive report to the families waiting at home to see who they will be hosting this year.
I visited the Foster Home in the nearby village of Rujany where I met the Foster Parents Olga and Yuri and quite a few of the children they are fostering. What is quite unusual is that there are several disabled children being fostered which is really good news as usually any child with a disability would be sent to a separate “facility” or institution. There is quite a story about this foster home and how it came about but of course there is not room to go into such detail in this article. Suffice to say we hope we may be able to give them
some support in the future not only with clothing for the children but hopefully should there be a special need for any of the children, financially as well. The natural child of the family David, is learning English at school. He is 15 years old and has asked if anyone of a similar age would like to be his pen pal or communicate via Skype to help him practise his English.
During this trip I also managed to get across to the Eastern side of Belarus and visit with many of the children who have come to us in previous years, some of whom are still be sponsored by families in Suffolk. We were also delighted to be able to track down Masha, a girl who first came to us in 2008 from difficult circumstances. Unfortunately, last year Masha’s granny died and without any other family she became an orphan and we had lost track of her until I was able to trace her during this visit. Although times have been difficult I am pleased to say she is ok and life is not too bad for her.
Please support our upcoming Country & Western event on
Chernobyl Childrens LifelineSaturday May 14th at the Cedars Hotel in Stowmarket. Fundraisers such as this not only help to raise the money needed for the group visit but hopefully to allow some provision for projects such as the Foster Home. band. A Pulled Pork supper will be included with dessert and of course a full bar will be open. Please see separate advert for details.for all their supportElizabeth Parker, Link Chair www.ccllmidsuffolk.org.uk 01449 760343 or 07771 550868

Care & Support GroupsTIPS TO PREVENT FALLSAround one in three people over 65 and half of over 80’s will have a fall every year. Even if you fall and are not hurt, a bad fall can shake your confidence.
Most falls are the result of a combination of factors including physical health, mental health, poor eyesight, hearing problems, prescribed medications - which can have side effects, heart problems or sudden changes in your blood pressure, which can make you feel faint. The good news is that falls are NOT an inevitable part of getting old, and there is plenty you can do to avoid them.
Exercise – Regular exercise such as walking, swimming, housework and gardening all strengthen your muscles, so you are less likely to fall and better able to recover if you do.
Get regular eye and hearing tests – You may qualify for free sight tests so make sure to ask your local optician. Your GP can also help to arrange a full sight or hearing test.
Visit the Chiropodist – Keeping your feet and toenails healthy and in good condition will help in your maintenance of overall good health. Conditions like diabetes or circulatory problems can all be picked up by looking at the feet.
Keep your doctors informed – Always tell the doctors treating you everything you’re taking, including tablets your doctor hasn’t prescribed but which you’ve bought yourself.
Make your home safer – install non slip rug pads under area rugs, place a rubber mat in the bath or shower, wear sturdy shoes or slippers inside, install brighter lights on your stairs and landing, mop up spills immediately, and keep things you use every day at an easy to reach level. Needham Market Town Council NewsNeedham Market’s New Town CouncillorThe Town Council is pleased to announce that Adrian Morris has been co-opted to its vacant seat (the Council has now all of its 15 seats filled). Adrian was one of four applicants and the Council thanks all those who applied for doing so. Those candidates who were unsuccessful can rest assured there will be other opportunities should they remain interested in becoming a Town Councillor, From the Town Council’s perspective it is very good news to have such interest from people in joining the Town Council. Adrian will be formally installed as a Town Councillor on Wednesday 20th April and we wish him a long and enjoyable stay in office.
Hill House Lane Planning Appeal – Planning Application 3679/13At the time of writing, the Planning Inspector is yet to make a decision on the appeal, which was first registered over a year ago. Whilst the appeal process is at an advanced stage, the Planning Inspector, responding to recent Court of Appeal judgments which may impact on the final decision, has allowed the parties involved to make comments on the perceived sustainability of the proposed development. The Town Council has taken full advantage of this late opportunity to try and influence the Planning Inspector to dismiss the Planning Appeal. With the help of our Planning Consultant Stephen Andrews, the Town Council submitted a lengthy and detailed submission to the Planning Inspector on 15th April. In contrast, the Town Council is aware of the submission made by the Planning Authority (Mid Suffolk District Council) on 6th April which really adds nothing to the debate. This is coupled with Mid Suffolk District Council’s failure to maintain its 5 Year Housing Land Supply Policy,
which has a substantial affect on the ability of Towns/Parishes in the District to resist inappropriate housing development. To add further contextual concern, the Town Council is unable to progress its Neighbourhood Plan for the town in the continued absence of that policy and other critical documentation, which has been promised now for months and which I have referred to in earlier Newsletters. The Town Council, in its submission to the Planning Inspector, described the position Mid Suffolk District Council has caused as being “hugely and inexcusably detrimental to our local community”.
Needham Maltings (Taylor Wimpey housing development off the High Street)Formal transfer, to the Town Council of the ‘Public Realm’ area included in the development was concluded on 16th March. This area includes the public car park. Also located
within the area is a brick monolith structure. The Town Council commissioned and has had produced four plaques, each of which conveys an aspect of the history of the site, which are attached to the monolith. To acknowledge the transfer of the Public Realm area to the Town Council, a small event will take place at 6:30pm on Monday 16th May, when Needham Market Town Mayor Josephine Lea, will officially unveil the plaques. All residents are most welcome to come along. Particularly for people who have taken up residence in the town more recently, there may be some surprise as to why, for example, that piece of the High Street is out of character with the remainder of the town’s historic core. The reason for that, along with many other interesting historical facts, is explained on the plaques.
EACH – appeal for new volunteersThe Town Council agreed to help the East Anglian Children’s Hospice by including in this
Newsletter contact details where information can be obtained regarding volunteering. Each are always in need of new volunteers that are able to offer some of their time to help with fundraising and raise awareness of EACH. If you would like to know more please contact Hannah Walker on 01473 276193 or visit their website www.each.org.uk .

This event always attracts large numbers of participants and their families and therefore please be aware there will be a lot of vehicles in the town, and parked in the vicinity of Crowley Park, on that day.

Neighbourhood WatchSuffolk may be one of the safest counties in the UK and Needham Market one of the safest towns in Suffolk as far as domestic burglaries is concerned but with the recent police cuts it has become clear that the likelihood of seeing a policeman patrolling any of the streets around Needham Market in the future is nil.
It is a sorry state of affairs but it does make you realise that it is becoming more and more important that we take all the necessary steps possible to protect our property and ourselves.
If we don’t it will soon become clear to the professional thief that there are some easy pickings to be had. The opportunist thief will also take advantage of the situation.
It is only when you become a victim of crime that you wish you had fitted security lights or added that extra lock to the door or checked twice that you had actually locked the back door before leaving home. It is always wise to have a set procedure before leaving the house or locking up for the night. Why not make a list then you will not wake up in the
middle of the night wondering if you did lock the patio door.
Most of us fail to make that extra effort to make our homes secure. It is well known that burglars are lazy; they are not going to go to a lot of effort to break into your property if it is difficult for them. Break-ins mainly occur because the opportunity presents itself. Just as car thieves walk around trying various car doors and looking to see if there are any valuables on display, a house burglar will first check to see if the house is occupied. He would then make sure by ringing the bell, if there is no answer he will likely try the door. If the front door is locked he will then try the back. If there are no security lights or the side gate is open or even worse the back door is unlocked it’s an opportunity that will surely be taken advantage of.
Be wise and be aware that if you want to become safe and secure in your own home take the necessary steps now to ensure that it is so.

Cat’s ProtectionBury St Edmunds and Stowmarket Cats ProtectionThis month we are looking for a home for Holly & Harley who are very sweet sisters aged approximately 18 months. They are quite small cats and Holly has a semi longhaired black and white coat whereas Harley is shorthaired. Holly and Harley are very affectionate, lovable and enjoy playing. They have not been used to living with other pets and we think they would be best suited to an adult family or one with older children. We are looking for a quiet home with a safe garden
as they have not been used to going outside but we hope to find them a home where they can enjoy the great outdoors. They are neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you would like to know more about Holly & Harley or any of the cats in our care please ring Marina on 01449674584. More information can found on our website www.cats.org.uk/bury-st-edmunds and our Facebook page. If your cat has not been neutered and your circumstances mean that you need financial help towards the cost please ring Margaret on 01284 851055 and leave a message. Your call will be
returned as soon as possible. We now have cat food collecting baskets and Newsletters in both Cedarwood Vets in Stowmarket and Fur-Ever Pets in Needham Market and would like to thank the management in both locations for allowing
us to do this. Our Spring Fayre is taking place on Saturday 7th May 11am to 3pm in Wattisfield Village Hall Admission Free. We have also booked a Jumble Sale in Stowmarket Community
Centre 18th June 2pm – 2pm Admission 20p. Tombola prizes and items for sale are always appreciated. Please ring 01449720003 or email [email protected] to arrange collection.

HOME WORSHIPApril’s Home Worship was led by Town Cllr. Josephine Lea who attends Our Lady’s Stowmarket, and as it happens is Mayor of Needham Market this year.
She told us of her work with the Stowmarket Food Bank, which now includes Needham Market, and the local churches and some shops have boxes for people to donate food. This started with the Stowmarket Churches Together, so churches of all denomations are involved. A room in Hillside Community Centre is permanently booked for the use of the Food Bank - grants have been given by local councils for the rent. The people who come to receive the food have been recommended by the Citizens Advice Bureau or other agencies, and often it is an emergency, temporary, supply of food, when perhaps someone has just lost their job, and is waiting for their job seekers allowance to come through. Jo has now started a Dementia Awareness Group in Needham Market, with meetings, so far in Christchurch. This is to understand and be patient with those who are affected. As we are all living longer there are more cases of dementia awareness.
May’s Home Worship will be led by a young man, John Collison, from Christian Aid, as Christian Aid week is in May, and we will learn more about their work.
Home Worship always meets on the first Monday morning of the month, 10 o’clock, at 137 High Street, Needham Market. All welcome - this is an outreach group.

Father David Finegan.
The Moody & Sankey evening in the Ark (Parish Church Hall) Needham Market, on Saturday evening 9th April, 2016, raised £327 for the Parish Church Roof fund. THANK YOU to David Freeman who provided the evening of gospel songs, with interesting anecdotes, and also the posters, fliers, and song sheets, and claimed no expenses; thank you also to Margaret Wilcox who put the posters up around the town; Margaret Savill and Peter Groom who provided
the refreshments at the end; Margaret Cowey and her friend Sandra who looked after the draw, and all those who generously donated draw prizes; David Sewell who put out the chairs and Paul & Sharon who booked the hall. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening with rousing exhilarating gospels songs sung in a very wholehearted way by the people there - there is a message in the music.

I like May – and not just because my birthday is in this month! It’s a time of year when Spring has definitely grasped the year, it’s a busy time in the garden and Summer warmth is tantalisingly close.
May is a month to be ‘doing things’ – to get out and about, and I note that the Suffolk Walking Festival starts on the 15th of the month – I really must book up!
This year, May is a busy month in the Church calendar – with Thursday 5th being Ascension Day (marking the ascent of Jesus into heaven); Sunday 15th is Pentecost Sunday and the following Sunday is known as Trinity Sunday.
Pentecost is the time when the early believers started to ‘get out and about’ – they left the sanctuary of their room in Jerusalem and started to preach the gospel to anyone and everyone who would listen. Within a few years the word had spread to countries as diverse as Syria, Macedonia and Italy.
We are so used to picking up a telephone to speak to someone, texting or emailing
our friends and families all over the world, or using social media to make an instant message, that I think we don’t appreciate that so much communication centuries ago was by word of mouth, or perhaps handwritten letters. There was a personal connection with any news – good or bad.
Now I’m a great social media user, but even I think that personal conversation, face to face is still the best way to communicate. It’s when you see each other’s face, listen to the intonations in your voices that you really make a connection.
At Christchurch, apart from our weekly Sunday services we run other groups where people get together to chat, to laugh, to play Scrabble, to knit, to meet new and old friends. (See the list in the Newsletter).
So, this May if you’d like to get out and about and perhaps don’t fancy the Suffolk Walking Festival, why not take a stroll down to Christchurch!

Our summer term is underway and May begins with group discussion on ‘My favourite miracle’ and week 2 ‘For everything a season’ after which we embark on a course called ‘Second Wind’ with intriguing sessions headed ‘Are we there yet?’ and ‘The Half-time score’; aided by preparation notes this promises some lively discussion and provoking thoughts!
All is completely free of charge.
We meet in room 4 at Christchurch on Thursday mornings during school term-time at 10am and welcome anyone who thinks this group might be part of their faith life. The sessions usually last an hour and end with refreshments. Come occasionally, come regularly, come as a stranger ~ leave as a friend…

On Sunday March 6, the Society arranged a day’s visit to the H.Q. of the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley, Surrey. There was almost a full coach for the visit, which was on Mother’s Day, so the garden was very busy - indeed the large and extremely full car park could easily have been mistaken for the car park at not too-distant Gatwick Airport! However the very spacious grounds seemed to absorb the visitor numbers with ease. Even in March there is a lot to see and appreciate at Wisley. The daffodils and crocuses were still very much in evidence; some magnolias were starting to bloom, and there were several wonderful displays of hellebores in surprisingly different colours. There are several stands of tall impressive pine trees, and large beds
of a wide range of different ornamental grasses. It’s amazing how many grasses can be grown, some with impressive heights, colourings and seed-heads. Ornamental grasses bring a sense of movement into a garden.
There are several specimens of Skimmias with their simple dark green oval leaves and red berries, and Mahonia Japonica with its inflorescence starting to show. Very noticeable were several displays of varieties of Dogwoods - Cornus sp. - whose coloured stems make a strong show in a winter garden. One striking variety is Cornus Sanguinea “Midwinter Fire” with light brown and yellow lower stems, changing to bright red upper stems: a bed of these looking very like a bonfire from
a short distance. Wisley was growing a very similar plant with the dogwoods, Rubus Cockburnianus “Goldenvale” with ghostly white winter stems.
On the western side of Wisley is its very large “Glasshouse”, an almost cathedral-like structure, home to the Society’s extensive tender plant collection, comprising more than 5,000 “taxa”- a wonderful range of tropical plants and small trees. There are three interlinked “zones” - dry temperate, moist temperate and a tropical zone overlooking the lake at the front. Entering the Glasshouse is like walking into a jungle.
Just some of the plants in the Glasshouse are varieties of banana plants, giant bamboos, small, large, and gigantic ferns, palm trees and smaller palm
specimens, and the striking “Strelitzia” - Strelitzia “Reginae”, the astonishing “Bird of Paradise” plant. The Butterflies in the Glasshouse, a wonderful range of beautifully-coloured tropical butterflies, was on its last day of opening of the season for Mother’s Day.
Members could choose from a good variety of restaurants, and finally there is the very extensive R.H.S. Shop, offering Plants, Prints, Holidays, Books & Gifts, and licensed products. Members returned to the coach after a memorable visit, many laden with plants from this very tempting and impeccable source

MID SUFFOLK BRASS
This month Mid Suffolk Brass were honoured to play at a community tribute event to Stanley King organised by Elmswell Amenities at the Blackbourne Community Centre in Elmswell. Stan passed away last year after a lifetime of service to the Elmswell
community and his second love was music of all sorts. His first love was the village of Elmswell.
Mid Suffolk Brass is available to play at community events, county shows, garden parties, fetes, weddings, bandstand concerts and formal evening
concerts. We are always looking for new band members so, if you are interested in joining us or just want to come along and play a brass instrument, we meet at St Peters Church Hall, Stowmarket every Monday evening at 7.45pm. We are a friendly band and are always
working hard on learning
new pieces of music. If you
would like to book us for an
event or wish to come along
to our rehearsals contact Mel
Stammers, our Musical Director
