WELCOME TO THE DECEMBER NEWSLETTER.

The last few weeks have slipped by so swiftly. The Town’s Civic Service was held on 16th October at St. John the Baptist Church, and we had the pleasure of welcoming the Bishop of Dunwich. I would like to thank the Revd. Diane Williams and Revd. Mary Playford who arranged the seamless Service, the Stowmarket Boys Brigade Centenary Band for leading the procession, to my personal delight the ‘Rabble Chorus’ who sang their hearts out and Town Clerk, Mr. Hunter, for pulling together so many varied aspects of the event, (from

road closures, to printing of the programs etc.) with complete success. Thank You All.

Another outstanding event I and my Consul Ms. Kay Curtis had the delight of attending was the opening of the National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art by Her Majesty the Queen at Palace House, Newmarket. I can also reveal that among (I’m sure) many other important items in Her Majesty’s handbag she obviously carries horse treats as she actually took some from it and seemed to take great amusement

in feeding treats to one of these amazing creatures. As she passed by the Mayors of Aldeburgh, Stowmarket and myself, Her Majesty remarked on our Chains of Office which gave us the privilege to identify the towns we represent.

As a last observation I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very happy and healthy New Year.

Our December meeting is organised by the members so, although I know we will have a good evening, I have no idea what will be happening. We will also be going out for lunch to celebrate the festive season. Our first meeting of the new year

will be on the subject of ‘Punch and Judy’ so if you feel the need to be entertained please come along and join us. On behalf of the members of the W.I. may I wish you all the very best Christmas ever and a happy and healthy 2017.We meet at the centre on the second Monday in the month at 7.30pm.

THE ASHBURNHAM OVER 60’S CLUBToken of Kindness

From 1st November 2016 to the end of January 2017, the Ashburnham Over 60’s Club has been selected to take part in the Co-operative Community Green Token Scheme. With every purchase from the store, you should be given a green plastic token - if the busy shop assistants forget, please ask for one and your token posted in our box would be very much appreciated.

We plan to fund an extra day out for members of our Club if our cause is successful. Your small token would make as huge difference to the day. Thankyou.

NEEDHAM MARKET BOWLS CLUBNMBC held its AGM on the 17th October 2016.

The meeting began sadly with a minutes’ silence for members who had passed away in the previous twelve months, Ross Theobold, Derek Mitchell, David Cousins and Terry Welhams.

This was followed by the Presidents, Club Captains and Treasurers reports and then by the election of the clubs’ officers as follows:

President: John Holloway, Chairman: Alistair Bailie, Treasurer: Linda Benthom, Secretary: Pat Hadden, Club Captain: Alistair Bailie, Minutes Secretary: Pat Goodrum.

Social events are held each month during the winter and they will be as follows:

December 16th - Christmas Social with a Quiz, scatagories, hoi bingo and carols, mince pies and sausage rolls are on the menu, members £3, non members £4.50.

January 20th, a Beetle Drive and a new additional a session by the Stowmarket Strummers Ukelele Band, thanks to Colin Biginton, hot food will be served, members £3, non members £4.50. this is also

your last chance to pay your membership fee.

February 24th, ‘Big Quiz’ night, food is soup and a roll followed by pudding, members £5, non-members £6.50.

The attached photo shows captain Joyce Walton receiving the trophy on behalf of her team for winning Div. A of the Tuesday league.

When the green re-opens we shall be having ‘Meet and Greet’ sessions on Saturday mornings for anyone who wishes to take up bowling, exact dates will be published in the April newsletter.

Remember, ’You’re NEVER too young to Bowl’!

The new season got off to a good start on 12 September with a lot of old members and several new potential members turning up. After greeting the new potential members and explaining roughly what the club is about, several members – new and old - showed prints that they had taken over the summer, for critique by the members. A huge pat on the back for the new people who showed their prints, not knowing what us ‘oldies’ were like! An enjoyable night was had by one and all.

On 26 September we held our ‘cracked lens’ competition, which was a great success.

This competition is for the best PDI (projected digital image) on the night and is judged by us, the members. 55 images were entered and Glenda Taylor won with ‘Reflections Uyuni. Well done Glenda – for the second year running!

We welcomed Phil Chatfield to the club to judge our ‘open’ competition (1) on October 10. The members pulled out all the stops and shared some fantastic pictures, several of which were awarded full marks by the judge.

On November 24 the club trophies were presented to the members achieving the highest overall competition

scores in each category. We also had a demonstration by club member Geoff Walker, of how to mount photographs for competitions.

Next meetings:

Monday 14 November: Talk to be given by Alan Sarsby - ‘Converting colour to monochrome’ which is a change from the published talk in the programme.

Monday 28 November: Open Competition (2) to be judged by Roy Essery

Monday 12 December: Wildlife Competition to be judged by Brian Carlick

New members are always very welcome at the club. All you need is a camera – any camera and a real interest in using it. Our members use DSLRs, mirrorless, compacts and bridge cameras.

Regular meetings are held at Stowmarket Community Centre, Hillside, Stowmarket, IP14 2BD, usually on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month between September & June. We start arriving at around 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start. We’d love to see you there, so why not join us?

October has had many moments that have shown the community of Bosmere working together-whether it be to create the outstanding Art Exhibition, collect food and goodies for local families in need or support the wonderful Macmillan Nurses and one of our students in a charity run. Thank you to everyone who has helped make these events so very successful.

The Gipping Valley Alliance Art ExhibitionIt was an incredible sight roaming the exhibition recently, viewing artwork from 3 year olds through to 18 year olds-each equally as impressive as the other! Children from our local High Schools and Primary Schools all contributed work to the exhibition-a wonderful example of schools collaborating to share, with pride the talented artists pieces from their schools.

We were all very proud of our part of the exhibition, showing such an array of talent and styles.

Our new Harvest CelebrationWhat a wonderful gathering together of the Community of Needham Market we had on Friday 14th Oct! There was a real buzz as children made their way to the Community Centre and saw the hall fill with so many special visitors.

Special thanks need to go to Rev Diane Williams and Hazel and Caroline from Stowmarket Foodbank, who helped to add that extra meaning to reasons behind our collection of goodies. Here is just a fraction of what our very helpful group of parents and grandparents help to display…

Baz and I were overwhelmed at the success of our very first anniversary event this weekend, with over 350 people taking part!

Upon starting the run a year ago we had 69 people attend and we were told to expect the numbers to drop off to an average of 40 to 50 each week; instead we have averaged in excess of 200 each week and our goal of attracting 300 for the Anniversary event was well and truly smashed!

We pride ourselves on ensuring that EVERYONE is welcome to come along and join in, whatever their age, shape, size or fitness ability. On Sunday, our youngest was little Freya at just 11 weeks old, and our oldest was 83 year old James! We were delighted to

welcome Zoe Newson, a Paralympian medalist at both London and Rio, who very kindly started the 2k and 5k events.

Councillor Stansfield, the Mayor of Needham Market also attended along with other councillors and enjoyed handing out medals to the children. Live broadcasting of the event was conducted by BBC Radio Suffolk. Thankyou to all local establishments who provided invaluable supplies to help satiate, hydrate runners and make the event so special.

Great Run Local is a ‘not for profit’ charitable foundation and it would be impossible to manage without the fantastic volunteers who help

Needham Market Craft Fair, October 2016Once again, we had a successful Craft Fair. Even though ‘twas early, there were plenty of Christmas items and some lovely gifts to start off your Christmas shopping. A steady stream of visitors arrived throughout the day helping to keep the momentum going. The “£20 for 50p” was won by a lady in Great Bricett and the number we were looking for was 43, chosen from a choice of envelopes by an independent visitor. The Community Council would like to thank the Community Centre staff and the WI for providing us with refreshments, the homemade cakes were very popular. We would also like to thank the people who helped to set up the Fair on the Saturday night and to clear up after the event, most valuable assistance. Lesley King

The RNLI has decided that house-to-house collections will no longer take place from 1st January 2017.The RNLI has always prided itself on its ethical approach to fundraising. The RNLI is lucky to be a well-respected and well supported charity and we need to make sure that respect is mutual and our supporters’ trust is well placed. The decision to end house-to-house collections has been taken by the RNLI

Executive Team following the charity’s recent decision to only contact supporters who have given their express consent. Cold calling – whether by phone or in person – does not fit with this sentiment, so the decision to stop this method of fundraising has been taken.Your local Stowmarket & Needham Market Branch of the RNLI would like to thank you all for your support and donations over the years. We will continue to hold regular collections in public

We now have confirmation that there will be a group of 7 children and one interpreter travelling to Mid Suffolk in December. The girls are aged 11,12, 13 and 14 with one 12 year old having her birthday on 19th December! We will of course have a birthday party for her which in itself will be an amazing experience as the children do not have birthday parties as our children do. Usually they will receive a small gift, possibly just some sweets or a few rubles to spend and there might be a small family gathering. As previously requested in our articles, any good quality second hand clothing for these girls would be greatly appreciated as they will only have the clothing they have travelled in when they arrive.

Our Facebook page has now been revamped so please do visit and “Like” us, we will endeavor to keep this up to date with our news and photographs. We also have a second page which is dedicated to our Charity Shop .We regularly receive new donations and stock is frequently rotated so the shop is well worth a visit. Host for our 2017 summer group visit please do get in touch as although it might seem a long way off preparation are already under way. Anyone can apply regardless of status or financial circumstances. We operate a Day Centre Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 4.30 so Hosts can follow their own occupation or other interests and the children live with the Hosts as part of their family at all other times.

The members of Needham Market Community Council would like to say a very big ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped at the annual Fireworks Display and Torchlight Procession which took place on Saturday 5th November. Despite it being a very cold

evening, a record number of people appreciated the torchlight procession and, on arrival at Needham Market Football Ground, Bloomfields, they joined the many spectators who then enjoyed a spectacular Fireworks Display of over 30 minutes duration. We are

very grateful to Needham Market Football Club for allowing us the use of their training pitch for the fireworks display and to Mid Suffolk District Council for the use of Hurstlea Rd car park which was the starting point of the torchlight procession. Thank you also

to the members of St Johns Ambulance and to our many stewards who were there to ensure the safety of everyone who came along. Thank you all very much.

Advice from Suffolk Constabulary regarding use of the 101 contact numberThe following advice has been received from the Police:As a Constabulary we no longer routinely deal with parking issues. Parking complaints are now addressed based on the Threat, Harm and Risk they pose at the time of reporting. Members of the public are directed to contact our control room on 101 to report such concerns at the time of the incident, whereby an assessment will be made on an individual basis and a resource allocated if required. We know the 101 system is not ideal but it is the way that everything needs to be reported.

Vehicles speeding in the High StreetThe Town Council is aware of complaints regarding vehicles speeding through the town during the night. If you are affected by this problem please refer it to the Police via the 101 telephone number (as recommended above). It would also be helpful if you could inform me (by email if possible) so that the extent of the problem can be gauged. The means by which traffic speeds can be monitored

are being looked into but, some of the potentially more effective methods/devices are costly and impractical when the problem occurs in the middle of the night. The more actual evidence that can be gathered on this and, any other problem of this nature, the greater the chance that a case can be made to put a means of dealing with the problem in place. It would be good, as many people might expect, if the Police could be relied upon to follow up complaints relating to problems like speeding traffic but we are aware there is now far more need to provide evidence before the Police will consider their involvement.

Free CAT Marking by Stowmarket Safer Neighbourhood TeamOur local Police team based in Stowmarket has arranged a CAT Marking event to be held at the Truck East (Scania) Garage, Violet Hill Road Stowmarket IP14 1NN, on Saturday 3rd December from 9am to 11:30am. Stickers will be provided which can be displayed on window vehicles to show the vehicle’s CAT is marked. The event is an attempt towards reducing the

likelihood of CAT thefts in response to the Stowmarket SNT locality and surrounding areas are again suffering from an increase in Catalytic Converter thefts.

Gipsy Lane Rail CrossingThe Town Council is pleased to learn consideration of the options to replace the existing pedestrian crossing, following a relatively lengthy delay, is again moving forward. Please see the notice on page 16 regarding Networks Rail’s impending public consultation.

RoadworksRoadworks affecting our town are difficult to avoid at the moment and that position will continue whilst contractors (Triio), working on behalf of National Grid, continue to install a new gas main. The installation project is expected to last for approximately 12 months (not 12 weeks as originally indicated on the contractors’ sign boards) as the process moves out of town along Stowmarket Road, up Badley Hill and to a point on the B1113 close to the Cedars Link roundabout. National Grid has provided notice

(not detailed at this stage) that the works are due to take place in phases so there should at least not be the necessity for a lengthy period of continuous traffic management on this busy stretch of road.

SnOasis planning proposal, Great BlakenhamFollowing a dormant period, the planning proposal to create an indoor ski slope and associated leisure facilities at Great Blakenham has been resurrected. If you are interested in viewing the proposals in detail, there are some 230 plus related documents posted on Mid Suffolk District Council’s website. Using the Planning Application search facility, the application can be found under reference number 4494/16. At the time of writing, the Town Council has yet to consider its response to consultation on the proposed development.

At the shop on the High Street we are preparing for Christmas. We have a variety of Christmas cards and wrapping paper as well as lots of Christmas present ideas such as hats, scarves, gloves, socks. There are games, books, jigsaws (some brand new) as well as lots of bric a brac that would make lovely presents. Don’t forget those people with birthdays at this time of year. Some people don’t like having their birthday present wrapped in Christmas paper so our range of birthday paper and cards is still available. I say ‘some people’ because my family know that they can wrap my presents in snowman paper any time of the year! We will be open on Sunday 4th December for the Street Fayre so do pop in and see us. I don’t think any of us can believe we’ve been open nearly a year already. We’re looking forward to making 2017 an even better year for the shop. With Christmas approaching beware these festive times of glad tidings and great joy can quickly turn to misery and frustration if we drop our guard.

Suffolk, as we all know, is one of the safest places in the country to live and we should consider ourselves fortunate to live in such a caring town as Needham Market. We do not suffer like some with wanton vandalism and domestic burglaries but just like any other town the opportunist thief is always lurking around the corner. It is this time of the year when opportunist thieves can have a field day. Put temptation in their way and they will most certainly take advantage.

They have no conscience; they will be looking out for parcels on show in a deserted car, gaily wrapped presents visible from the street, or back doors open to an inviting array on the kitchen table, even a shed or garage door carelessly left open can prove tempting.

It takes just a matter of seconds to break a car window and

remove parcels, or to nip in through an open door and take a handbag off a table.

Supermarkets and their car parks are also places to be aware of criminals up to no good. They are being used for all sorts of scams these days. Be very careful when you are using your cards either paying for goods or using an ATM; make sure you are not distracted and that somebody standing close to you is not trying to steal your pin number. You are not even safe when you are unloading your shopping into your car; criminals work in pairs, while one is distracting you the other is going through your bag looking for your credit card.

Also be aware if there is a note on your windscreen informing you your car has been involved in an accident; the note goes on to give a name and a phone number for you to call. Those that do call are then pumped for personal information that may be used for criminal purposes. The telephone

number is a premium rate number set up by the fraudsters. Calling it will run up a huge phone bill as the criminal will do everything they can to keep you on the line for as long as possible.

Final piece of advice for 2016: be aware of what’s happening

around you; make a firm decision now to check and double check that you have not left temptation in the path of opportunist thieves. That way you will increase your chances of having a Happy Christmas and a safe and secure New Year.

This month we are looking for a home for Mina. She is a very pretty tabby girl aged 4/5 years old. She loves fuss and attention but sometimes it can be on her terms. Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide Suffolk is part of a national charity that exists to meet the needs of those bereaved by suicide. Suicide bereavement is different to all other grief and SoBS would claim to offer the expertise needed. We are user led and offer free, indefinite support to all survivors eighteen years and over in the UK. In Suffolk the charity holds monthly group meetings in Bury, Ipswich and Lowestoft. We give email and telephone support in-between group meetings and survivors are invited to attend informal monthly and annual events.

FREE NHS Health CheckAre you Aged 40 to 74? Find out about your FREE NHS Health Check: Even though you might be feeling great, if you’re over forty you might be at risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, diabetes or dementia. A FREE NHS Health Check can help you reduce these risks and make sure that you stay healthy. Having the health check will better prepare you for the future and will enable you to take steps to maintain and improve your health. What will happen at the check? The check will take between 20-30 minutes and will involve the health professional asking you a few simple questions regarding your family history and lifestyle. They will also check your height, weight and other details, as well as test your blood pressure and complete a simple blood test to check your cholesterol level.

After the check they will talk you through your results and explain to you what they mean, giving you personalised advice on how to lower your risk and maintain a healthy lifestyle. You may also be prescribed further treatment or medication to help maintain your health. Arrangeing your NHS Health Check: If you are aged 40-74 and have not had a stroke or been diagnosed with heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, kidney disease or diabetes then you are eligible for a free NHS health check. NEEDHAM MARKET GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME

Coming up to Christmas and 10 months into the launch of our Good Neighbour Scheme we thought it would be a good time to inform the residents of Needham Market of the progress to date.A Good Neighbour Scheme is for the benefit of the whole community although it tends to be mainly the elderly that make the most use of it. We are all volunteers and offer our service only for activities that we feel confident of carrying out, such as changing a light bulb, fixing a dripping tap, checking a smoke alarm, moving furniture, hanging a picture, a one off garden tidy or walking a dog for people who are unable to get out temporarily. Befriending on a regular basis or helping with the computer or writing a letter are other things we can help with.Transport to hospital for a pre arranged appointment could also be arranged and this is the only service that we would charge for. The recommended price would be 45 pence per mile to compensate the driver for fuel, wear and tear. Any resident requiring such help for any of the above is asked to ring our mobile number 07999576544. The mobile phone is held by one of our committee members on a rota basis.To date we have 22 volunteers offering their service and have been able to satisfy most of the 40 odd calls requesting help. With the advertising we have been doing it was thought that more people would take advantage of the service we offer considering that the last census showed that of the 4800 resident of the town over 30% were over the age of sixty.However it is very encouraging to learn that in Needham Market we have many residents who look after their elderly neighbours without giving it a second thought.It is worth mentioning that all of our volunteers have been security checked and the Scheme was officially launched in January with the approval of Community Action Suffolk.Trevor Gibbons. THE NEEDHAM MARKET SOCIETY EVENTS 2017 30th November - The Servants of Abbots Hall - Jeannette BaldryWe have heard the history of the buildings of Abbots Hall in Stowmarket. This talk will introduce us to the servants that worked to keep the household running.

25th January - The Round Tower Churches of East Anglia – Stuart BowellThere are about 42 churches with round towers in Suffolk, nearly a quarter of the 181 in the whole country. The talk will explain the history of these unusual churches and introduce some excellent examples.

22nd March - Needham’s Team of Professional Archaeologists – Dr Rhodri GardnerWere you aware that we have a team of professional archaeologists based in Needham market? Come and hear about the varied work they carry out and some of their interesting projects.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the NEEDHAM MARKET SOCIETY, we invite all townspeople in November to our final meeting of 2016 where we are delighted to welcome back Jeannette Baldry of Abbots Hall who has been invited to talk about those in the past who kept that household running (details below). 1966 was the year when Needham Market Society was formed as a reaction to the proposal that a satellite town of 20,000 inhabitants should be developed here in Needham Market. The reaction was to protest, and to encourage the townsfolk to express their opinions about the town and to take unified action to protect its architecture and landscape. Obviously, action taken by the people at that time was successful and it is all credit to the Society that we remain a small town which has retained its character and charm. In addition the Society has played no small part over the years in the establishment of the town’s Conservation Area which has preserved the heart

of the historic architecture and nature of the town. The Society has also played its part in the restoration of the Station building, and it continues to play a role in the town’s planning and growth. New Year 2017 will start the next 50-year epoch under almost new management as both Nigel Griffiths and Gordon Crosby have now stepped down. The committee wishes to thank them both for their sterling work in guiding the Society over the recent years.

Future talks: 30th Nov. ‘The Servants of Abbots Hall’. Speaker Jeannette Baldry. 25th Jan. ‘The Round Tower Churches of East Anglia’. Speaker Stuart Bowell explains their history through excellent examples. All talks take place at 7.30pm in the Burton Room, at Needham Market Community Centre. We warmly welcome new members, the annual subscription being £5. Currently we ask for a £2 entry fee for non-members.

NEEDHAM MARKET AND DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Our autumn programme continued with a talk by Julie Foster, aided by lots of items that she had foraged from hedgerows. These included many plants that can be used for medicinal purposes and may be used in cooking and drinking. In November we travelled to Kashmir with Maggie Thorpe, to enjoy a show of the Mogul Gardens. These were gardens that were built hundreds of years ago and are still being cared for and used today.The 2017 programme is now out and we look forward to an entertaining year. The AGM will be after the winter break, on 2nd February 2017, and will feature Mr Barham with ‘The origin of sayings’.Meetings are usually held on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30 in the Community Centre. We have varied, interesting and entertaining speakers, refreshments and a bring and buy plant stall. We also organise coach trips and evening visits to local places of interest. CountdownThis time of year seems to be about countdowns! There’s the ‘countdown’ to Christmas – which we call Advent –a time of anticipation and preparation for the birth of the baby Jesus. Many of us have Advent calendars to keep us on track, and some of them have chocolate – which can’t be bad! Some people burn a candle during Advent. You’re meant to burn a small section each day, although the one year I tried this I lit it and then forgot about it and burned the whole candle in one session. It didn’t make Christmas come any quicker! As the ‘big day’ gets closer I hope the sense of hope and expectation exceeds that of panic!The other countdown I am thinking of comes a week after Christmas Day as midnight on 31st December approaches: 10,9,8,7,6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... ‘Happy New Year!! The clocks chime, the sky is full of fireworks and we pass from the Old to the New.In these dark days of winter, may you all embrace both

these countdowns – and know the joy and excitement of the birth of the Christ Child, and approach the blank page of the New Year eager to fill it with wonderful memories. So, I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Christmas, and a New Year full of promise and joy. Most people believe that if you are having a heart attack you will experience pain in your chest. However, not everyone does and there are many other warning signs to look out for.

A heart attack is when your heart is starved of oxygen, causing damage to your heart muscle. Please call 999 without delay if you believe you or someone else is experiencing a heart attack.

Signs and symptoms vary from one person to another, below are the most common signs and symptoms:

• Chest Pain – your chest may feel tight or heavy. You may experience pain or a burning feeling in your chest. Not everyone experiences chest pain.

• You may have pain which radiates down your arms, neck, jaw, stomach or back.

• You may only experience pain in one of these places. This pain or tightness may be severe, or may just feel a bit uncomfortable.

• Shortness of breath and sweating – often to touch the person feels cold and clammy.

• Feeling light headed, you may experience nausea or vomiting

• Some people may have a feeling of indigestion or reflux.

• Generally feeling unwell or lethargic can be an indication of a heart attack when accompanied by chest pain or discomfort.

Having a heart attack is a frightening experience, however after a heart attack many people make a full recovery within a few months, but some people find they can’t do as much as they could previously. This is due to damage to your heart muscle, so act quickly and call 999, as the sooner you receive treatment

you will prevent further damage to your heart muscle.
